2. Let's Start with a Story: a friends. Before we dive into the subject, I want to tell you a short story. Are you ready? Frank is a 25 year old independent video creator who has run his own YouTube channel for over three years. Up until now, he has recorded all of his videos in his living room. This has worked fairly well for his video blog's and discussion videos, but now he wants to start making videos off professional product reviews and demonstrations to be able to make money from sponsor deals. He tried a few different approaches with the different backgrounds, perspectives and lighting setups, but never felt good about the results. One day he watched the video on YouTube, in which the subject was filmed on a clean black backdrop. He noticed that the person and the props used in the video was completely unfocused for the viewers, which created a very professional and serious impression. He instantly felt a good feeling about the video and decided to learn how to do this. He searched for a while and finally found a video course by Mike from Sweden. He enrolled in the course, which made him learn how to make a complete, set up and workflow to create videos with a clean black background. He took the course and implemented the know that she gained into his videos off to re started making these kinds of videos himself. He noticed great results. It became much easier to find sponsor deals for product reviews and demonstrations, and the payments increased a lot. Taking action to learn how to sit up and record videos with a black background turned out to be a complete success story for Frank. All right, after this little short story to open your eyes to the great potential of using a clean black background for your videos, let's move on to the next lesson, my friends.
3. Example Professional Black Background: Hey, friends, let's look at the finished video filmed on a black background so that you can see the results you will be able to get. So as you can see, the background is completely black, which removes all distractions and guides your focus to me, my message as well as any products or objects I choose to incorporate into the video. For example, I could choose to talk about this banana, and since there is nothing or interest in the background, your eyes and mind will focus on me holding this banana. I'm sure this video demonstration off a clean black background will give you ideas on how you can use this technique to present whatever you want to present in your video. For example, product reviews, unboxing videos demonstrating how to assemble or use the product, video blocks, presentations, teaching or just about anything, even banana videos. All right, now that you have seen an example of a professional black background video, let's move on to the next lesson. My friends
4. What is a Black Background Video?: Hey, friends, let's talk about what I mean by a black background video. It's simple, really. Instead of filming your video in a natural environment like your living room or your office , you use a black backdrop off some kind and feel the subject in front of it. You have to be careful with the lighting set up as well as the natural light in the room itself, so that, as little light as possible gets onto the black backdrop because nothing in reality is 100% black. Well, except for a black hole. But I don't suppose you have one of those at home. The blackness level off the surface is, in fact, a direct result off how much light is being reflected. So a black fabric, which you might think is completely black, is probably reflecting one or 2% of the light that is coming its way. That is just in my estimate toe work as an example, but indeed, there are different levels off black. Basically, what you need to do is to use the vast difference of light between the subject and the backdrop itself to treat the camera that the background is indeed pure black. If you get the background in the video almost black when previewing it in the camera, it will work. Fine. Since you will fix that lost polish in the editing process, the end result will look something like this. This is an example of a black background video. All right. Are you ready to learn how to film and produce this kind of video? Great. Let's move on to the next video, my friends.
5. Get the Most out of this Course: Hey, friends, I really wanted to learn, improve your skills, get inspired and motivated and hopefully develop unique ideas from taking my course to get the most out of this course, I have some tips for you. Take my advice is you won't. My only wish is that you get a good learning experience as well as motivation, and that you finally take action in the end. First the course discussion board. If you have a question or simply want to share your thoughts, please use the course discussion board report of the discussions and engaged with other students. Everyone, including yourself, will gain from it, and I will also jump in personally and deport off the discussions. My second advice is on repetition. Be prepared and take notes during the course. It is also OK to pause and reflect whenever you need to watch lessons again. To really let the knowledge sink in as many times as you feel necessary. Remember that repetition is the mother off learning. My third tips take action. The best time to take action is while you have the knowledge fresh in memory, the most motivation and momentum. So I really hope you take the advantage of this and take action right after you have finished the course and my final advice. Make it fun. How could you make the learning experience more fun and exciting? Well, it's all about attitude and willingness to learn. Have your load pad or note app ready? Make a cup of coffee or tea and perhaps bring out a box of fine chocolate. I know I would. And get into a positive mindset. All right, now you're ready to dive into the practical section of this course. I'll see you there, my friends.
6. Practical Use Cases: a friends. Let's look at some different use cases off when a black background video can be a great choice If you want to get a serious, focused and professional look in your video case. One. A black background can be very effective in a product review or demonstration video. The product will be more in focus, and the black background can help in adding that professional feel case. Two video blog's and discussions can were great with a black background. For example, If the topic is philosophical in nature, the black background can help in establishing a serious tone case. Three white backgrounds have become the norm for ads since they created more positive atmosphere. But there are still products and services that can work well with a black background, and it also depends on the audience. Take products for niche markets and especially products aimed towards creative people. Like video producers, music makers, etcetera can often use a black background video for a coolness factor, especially if mixing in animations and special effects. He's four videos where you show how to use the product or how to assemble it or agreed to film against a black background. This will make it easier for the viewer to focus on all the important details. Instead, over distracting background. Just remember to choose a good camera perspective that really shows the important steps you want the viewers to see. All right now you know a few great examples off practical use cases for a black background video. So let's move on to the next lesson, my friends.
7. Example Bad Video Backgrounds: Hey, friends. Sometimes it's good to know how not to do it to fully appreciate the real potential off how to do it. So let's look at some different examples off bad backgrounds for video. Bad background. One bright window Filming against the window often creates too much bright light and contrast for the camera to handle. Also, the lights should be used to focus on your subject, not the background. Bad background, too plain wound. One word boring. This is a very typical background used in many YouTube videos. But even if the wall is white, it becomes a light, gray and amateur's background in the video without good lighting. If you want to film against the white wall, use extensive lighting to overexpose it into a clean white background in the video. Bad background. Three. Messy disk. While you can indeed use a desk as a background with good results, you will need to keep it tidy. A cluttered desk just creates an unprofessional and distracting background. Bad background. Four. Random room. Many people just feeling their videos in their living room, and while it might be tidy most often, the background does not compliment the subject of the video. If you're going to use the natural room background, take time to consider a good camera perspective, angle framing and so on to make the background look appealing. All right, I hope these examples made it more clear for you. How important A good background ISS for video. So are you ready now to move on to the next lesson? Let's do with my friends.
8. Room: a friends. In this video, we will discuss the room you choose to film in. This is the first thing you should consider, because choosing the right room will make it so much easier to get a clean black background . All right, let's first consider the size of the room, since you will be using a lighting set up, and you also want to have some distance between the subject on the background, you should try to fill in a medium or large sized room. Personally, I have a very small room and get it to work. So it is doable but much harder to set up section natural light. After you have found a after you have found a potential room to film in, you should look around you and check how much natural light is coming into the room. Thus the room have many windows. Basically, you want avoid natural light as much as possible. So what can you do to control and minimize natural light in the room? Well, you will have to use good blinders and curtains to block out national light. Your goal is to end up with a really dark room so that the only light in the room is coming from the lighting. Use it up and control yourself. So, to recap, find a medium or large room to film in check. How much natural light is entering the room and from where? Use blinders and curtains to minimize natural light as much as possible and aim for a really dark room. All right, now that you know what to consider when choosing the room to film in and how to prepare it , let's move on to the next lesson, my friends.
9. Backdrop: Hey, friends in this video, we're going to talk about what kind of different backdrops you can use for a black background. What kind of backdrop you should choose Depends on a lot of factors. For example, how much money you want to spend if you want to have a fixed or portable set up, how big you need your backdrop to be, and so one. Probably the most common black backdrop is a large piece of black fabric like Cotton Curtain. You will need a way to set up this backdrop in the room, preferably as close to the wall as possible to give you more space for the subject lighting and camera set up if you can, I would advise you to mount some kind of clamps on the wall itself so that you can just hang your backdrop fast and easy before your recording session. You can, of course, also use some kind of stands to hang your backdrop from another kind of backdrop is a black paper roll. This is probably only interesting to you if you have a studio where you record your videos in paper rolls are very common in photography studios because it is very easy to get great results with them. For example, you don't have to struggle with creases. If they become dirty, you just pull out the paper a bit from the role and cut away the dirty part. There are also standardized wall mounting systems as well as professional stand solutions for using paper roll backdrops. You can even have several roles mounted on the wall near the ceiling, with different colors to choose from. The main drawback is that you need a very wide room because the paper rolls are about three meters wide and you also need some extra room for the mounting system. Now it's time for my personal solution, which is also my favorite one. And this is to use something that you already have available in the room itself. Black curtains or blinds. I used black blinds for my Kia, and it works great. I even get a double win by using these kind of set up First. It's used to block out natural light from entering the room, then it is also used as the actual black backdrop itself. The main drawback is that it is not possible to get a full frame shot because it's only about two meters in height. I also believe that two meters is the widest version they have on a Kia. But of course you can look around in other stores. I always go to like ear because, well, I'm Swedish and they always have very inexpensive solutions. So to recap, choose the backdrop that works best for you and the room you filming. Consider how you will mount the backdrop and if he will go for a fixed solution or if you are OK with setting it up each recording session. Common backdrops are black fabric like curtains, black paper roll and my personal favorite black blinds from my Kia. All right, now that you know what to consider when choosing the right backdrop for you and how to set it up, let's move on to the next lesson. My friends
10. Lighting: Hey, friends in this video, we're going to learn about how to make a good lighting set up for a black background video . First, you should consider what kind of lights you can use in your lighting set up. There are many different kinds of lights, but I believe the three most common or incandescent lighting like Langston and hella gin lamps, which basically are the old fashioned light bulbs that use electrical current to heat a thread inside it until it glows with the light. Then we have fluorescent lights, which basically or some kind of chemical reaction involving Mercury Force for and electricity. These are the lights shaped like long tubes you see in the ceilings, off officers, etcetera. But most importantly, in the recent years, fluorescent lights have been produced in several compact form factors. This means that you can use them as light bulbs, and they produce four more light than incandescent lights with the same amount of power. The third alternative and my personal favorite is led lighting. Led lights are so effective that it is even possible to use battery powered lights for your set up. These is what I do. Another great advantage of using led lights is that they produce very little heat, so you are able to film for a long time without heat problems in the room. When deciding what kind of lights to use, you should also consider the color temperature off the lights. The cooler temperature is a technical term that specifies how warm or cold do the light is . This is not about heat at all. It is all about the color cost off the light. Does it have a war cost, which means a yellowish tone? Or does it have a blue cost, which means the bluish tone Colder temperature is measured in Kelvin. And to get the best results, you should try to find a light that is measured for daylight color temperature, which is about 5600 Kelvin. After you have chosen what kind of lights to use, you have to know how to place in point them in order to get good results in your black background videos. Remember, you want to avoid light spilling onto your black backdrop as much as possible, but you also want to light your subject to get a good image in your video. The best way to set up your lights to achieve this is by using a two point lighting set up . This means that he used to different lights to light your subject. If you place those lights in a 45 degree angle from either side of the subject, you will get an even and balanced lighting on the subject while minimizing spill on the background. If you want to take it up a notch for a truly professional look, you might even want to go for a three point lighting system. This means that you add an extra third light behind the subject and point it on the back of the subject's head. In professional terms, this is often referred to as a hair light, and it is used to add contrast to the outline of the subject, which will make him stand out even more from the background. So to recap first, you should choose what kind of lights you should use. My recommendation is using led lights, but fluorescent lights also works great. Then you should also consider the cooler temperature for the lights. For the best results, you should look for daylight balanced lights, which is 5600 kelvin. Finally, you should place and point the lights carefully to get the best results. My recommendation is to use a two point lighting system with two lights at 45 degree angle on either side of the subject. If you want to be really fancy, you can add 1/3 light behind the subject into towards the back of his or her head. Now that you know how to make a complete lighting set up, as well as placing and porting the lights for the best results, let's continue in the next lesson, my friends.
11. Discussion Time: Hey, friends, let's take a break and have some coffee and cinnamon buns in true Swedish style. All right, let's use this time to create some fun and exciting discussions about black background videos. Do you have any specific questions on sitting up in filming videos on a black background? Did you already try to do this yourself? And if so, what did you find most difficult with it? What kind of videos are you looking to create on a black background? I am looking forward to hearing from you. So please add your comment and questions in the discussion area off this course. Also take port in discussions created by other students, and I will also jump in to reply when you have finished your cup of coffee. I would also really appreciate if you take a minute to leave your rating and review for this course. This will also help other students find the course and benefit from it. All right, when you have finished your coffee break, let's continue in the next lesson. My friends
12. Camera Settings: Hey, friends. In this video, we will talk about the most important camera settings to get the best results from your black background videos. The most important aspect is getting the exposures that correctly you want to expose for your subject's face so that it's not too dark and not over exposed. Find a good balance. You might even get away with using automatic exposure with your camera. The key is that if you're camera has something lighter to expose for, the background will become darker, which is what you want. Then you should set your camera to focus on your subject. Specifically, the eyes should be in perfect focus. Many modern cameras have great all to focus capabilities and can often be set to eye tracking. When you are happy with the focus, you should look it with a feature in your camera called Focus Look. This prevents the camera from continues with searching and tracking for focus, which is very distracting. However, this setting only works if the subject remains at the same camera distance in the video. If your camera doesn't have a focus lock setting, you can always use manual focus instead. One last thing that you might want to do is setting the white balance for your video. White balance is used to tell the camera what white looks like in the specific lighting conditions in the video. This is to prevent the image to get a color cost on it like, for example, of yellowish or blue is look. Sometimes you can get away with the cameras automatic white balance, so check your display and see if it is good enough for you. You can also dial the white balance with different presets in the camera when browsing. For those presets, there is usually one called custom. The process is to let the subject hold something that is true white like, for example, a piece of paper. Assume into that paper and take a picture. Then go to that custom white balance setting in your camera and choose the picture you just took as your preset. So to recap, the most important camera setting is the exposure you should expose for your subject's face and find a good balance that is not to Norc and not over exposed. Then you have to get the focusing set correctly, and you should always aim for perfect focus on your subject's eyes. And finally, you should set the white balance to reflect the true colors in the image. Now that you know the most important camera settings to consider, let's move on to the next lesson, my friends.
13. Editing: Hey, friends in this video, we're going to talk about the editing process. There are so many things you can do in editing, but in this lesson, I want to focus on the most important things to do to get a clean black background in your video. So once you have imported your video footage into your video editing software, you should preview it and especially check how the black background looks. There is a high probability that it does not look completely back, but that is what we're going to fix with this step. What you want to do is to make your dork areas in the image even darker so that a black background looks completely black. All professional video editors have an effect called levels. Apply that effect to your video. Usually there are three sliders in the effect. Those sliders represent the black levels, the medium levels and the white levels. What you should do is to drag the lift slider, which is the black levels. A bit to the right, you will notice that the dork areas in your video become even darker. Drag that slider just enough to make your background look completely black. If you don't have the levels feature in your video editing software, you can adjust the contrast instead. Increasing the contrast makes the dork parts of your image darker and your light parts of your image lighter. By doing these, you can also make your background 100% black. If you're backdrop did not cover the complete frame of the video. You can use the cropping feature in your video editor to get rid of the areas outside of the backdrop. If you don't have any layers off footage or other graphics below your video in the editor, the cropped areas off the image will become completely black. So to recap, the two most important things to do in the editing process is to make the background completely black by using the levels feature or increasing the contrast of the image and to crop out areas off the background that was not covered by the black backdrop. All right, now that you know how to achieve that completely black background by following these lost steps in the editing process, let's continue in the next lesson. My friends
14. Framing: Hey, friends in this video, we are going to talk about framing the image in your video and why it is important. This sign and layout is the subject of its own. But basically people find that horizontally framing something in the middle looks less pleasing than framing it to the side, and these concept also transfers to the vertical plane. That is why there is a technical term called the Rule of Thirds. Basically, you divide the image in three equally sized sections horizontally as well as vertically. Then you use those lines as a framing guide. A great advantage or framing the subject according to the rule of thirds Guideline is that you get a perfect area to add text and graphics to, since people focused mostly on other people's eyes, what you want to do is to frame the eyes off the subject. In line with that talk framing guideline, you also want to frame the rise on either the left or the right side off the rule of thirds framing guide, depending on the camera distance and soon level. The amount of room between the subject's head and the top of the frame can vary even though the eyes or perfectly on level with the top framing guide in a black background video. You most likely want to have some headroom for this object, so adjust your assume and camera distance until you get a decent amount of head room before you start filming. So to recap, framing someone or something in the middle of the image looks less pleasing than framing it to the side. Use the rule of thirds as a framing guideline. Frame. The subject's eyes on the top guiding line, as well as either on the left or the right guarding line. Using the rule of thirds will also create a perfect place to add texting graphics to and works especially great, filmed on a clean backdrop. Now that you know how to frame a subject according to the rule of thirds, let's continue in the next lesson, my friends
15. Clothing: Hey, friends. In this video, we will discuss what kind of clothes to wear in a black background video to get the best results. Your clothes are not only important for your personal image, but also for the image in the video itself. Since you're filming against a black backdrop, lighter colors will work better and make you pop out from the background. Because of the higher contrast, you should definitely avoid wearing black or very dark clothes. If you want to create even more dynamic interest in your video, you should were strong colors. All colors actually appear more vivid against a black background. This will make you stand out even more. It can also were great for the video thumbnail image. Then you should also think about using clothes with patterns or not. The general rule in video production is that you should avoid using clothes with BC patterns such as thin lines and stripes. It is always safe to use clothes with a plane color, and it works great against a black backdrop. So to recap, you should consider what kind of clothes you should wear in your black background Video. Light colors were better than dark colors. Strong colors make you stand out more and adds more dynamic interest in the image. Avoid BC patterns, and if you want to go safe, you should use clothes in a plane color. Now that you know what to consider when choosing clothes to wear in your black background video, let's move on to the next lesson, my friends.
16. Distance: Hey, friends in this video we're going to discuss distance the distance between the camera on the subject, the distance between the subject and the backdrop, and finally, the distance between the lights and the subject. The distance between the camera and the subject is probably the least important distance, but it does affect how is it will be to frame the subject as well as controlling the depth of field of the image. Depth of field is a technical term that is not really part of this course, but basically it is how much is in focus in the image. I am sure you have seen lots of pictures where the person is in focus, but the background is blurry. That is because of a short depth of field. And this can work to your advantage, since the shorter depth of field can make the background blurry, which might help you get rid of creases, spots and dirt that otherwise would be visible in the image. If you place your camera father away and soon into the subject, you will decrease the depth of field. Having the camera father away also helps you frame the subject easier. The distance between the subject and the backdrop is by far the most important distance. Basically, you want your subject to be a Sfar away from the backdrop as possible, because this means that less light will spill onto the backdrop, which will make it a lot easier to create a clean black background in the video. However, the father away from the background your subject is, the bigger the backdrop needs to be. So take some time to find the right balance for euro set up personally, I stand about 1 to 1.5 meters away from the backdrop which works great for me. The distance between the lights and the subject can also matter, so you want to avoid as much light as possible to spill onto the backdrop, right? Well, if you have the lights closer to the subject, you don't have to use as much light. This makes the whole set up much easier and also less expensive. The main drawback is that you have to be careful so that the lights themselves are not visible in the image. My advice is that if you choose to have your lights fairly close to your subject, let's say around 1 to 2 meters. Led lights will work very well. I myself used inexpensive and battery driven led lights for my black background videos, and they are also dimmable, which is great for increased control. So, to recap, there are three major distances to consider when filming your black background videos. The distance between the camera and the subject, the distance between the subject and the background, and the distance between the lights and the subject. The most important business is the one between the subject and the backdrop. Try to get as much distance as possible here. The distance between the camera and the subject is not super important, but increasing the distance and assuming in with the lens will decrease the depth off field , which will help you get a cleaner background. Finally, the distance between the lights and the subject should preferably be shorter because he can use less light, which will give you more control. Now that you know about the distances to consider when filming your black background videos , let's move on to the next lesson. My friends
17. Step by Step Summary: Hey, friends, this video will be a step by step. Short summary off all the things you have learned in this course, let's get right into it. Find a medium to large room to film in check how much natural light is entering the room and from where used blinds and curtains to minimize natural light as much as possible and aimed for a really dark room. Choose the back group that works best for you and the room you film in. Consider how you will mount the backdrop and you feel will go for a fixed solution or if you're okay with setting it up each recording session. Common backdrops are black fabric like curtains, black paper roll and my personal favorite black blinds from my Kia. First, you should choose what kind of lights you should use. My recommendation is using led lights, but fluorescent lights also were a great look for Daylight balance lights, which is 5600 Kelvin. My recommendation is to use a two point lighting system with two lights at 45 degree angle on either side of the subject. If you want to be really fancy, you can add 1/3 light behind the subject aimed towards the back off his or her head. There are three major distances to consider when filming your black background videos. The distance between the camera and the subject, the distance between the subject and the background, and the distance between the lights and the subject. The most important distance is the one between the subject and the backdrop. Try to get as much distance as possible here, the distance between the camera and the subject. It's not super important, but increasing the distance and assuming in with the lens will decrease the depth of field , which will help you get a clean or background. Finally, the distance between the lights and the subject should preferably be shorter because you can then use less light, which will give you more control. Used the rule of thirds as a framing guideline frame the subjects ice on the top guiding line, as well as either on the left or the right guiding line. Using the rule of thirds will also create a perfect place to add texting graphics to and works especially great. Filmed on a clean backdrop, light colors work better than dark colors, strong colors make you stand out more and adds dynamic interest in the image. Avoid BC patterns, and if you want to go safe, you should use clothes in a plane color you should expose for your subject's face. Then you have to get the focusing, said correctly, and you should always aim for perfect focus on your subject's eyes. Finally, you should set the white balance to reflect the true colors in the image. The two most important things to do in the editing process is to make the background completely black by using the levels feature or increasing the contrast of the image and to croup out areas of the background that was not covered by the black backdrop. Great. In the next section off this course, I will give you my bonus tips and show you my personal set up for black background videos. So let's continue my friends
18. Mike's Bonus Tips: Hey, friends. In this lesson, I will give you my best personal tips on filming a black backdrop video. I will give it to you as a bullet list to keep it structured and concise. Spend a good amount of time on preparations and tests before the real production begins. Focus especially on getting the room as dark as you can. Always let your subject know in advance What kind of clothes to wear in the video. Don't fix it if it's not broken. If you have found a set up that works for you, continue using it. Use lights that are deemed noble. You will appreciate the greater control this gives you and finally have found an experiment on different kinds of videos filmed on a black background. All right, let's continue to the next lesson where I will show you my personal set up for black background videos. See you there. My friends
19. Course Project: Hey, friends. Now it is finally time to put your newly learned knowledge into practice. Yes, it's time for your final course project so full of these instructions to complete the course. Project one. Sit up and filling your own black background video to import the footage into your video editing software and make all adjustments you want. Three. Export. It shows an single frame off the video as an image and save it somewhere on your computer. And four. Finally upload that image to this course as you're finished Course product. Congratulations, my friend. You have taken action and you should be really proud of it. I would shake your project result and give my personal praise to you, and other students will also be able to air their comments. Now let's get to 100% by watching the last video, which is a bonus video I made for you. See you there. My friends
20. Mike's Practical Setup: Hey, friends. In this video, I will give you a brief overview off my own personal set up for creating black background videos. All right, here we go. Backdrop. I use black blinds from my Kia, cheap but effective, and it also blocks out light from the outside camera. I use a Panasonic F, said 1000 which is a fixed lens camera that produces great quality video and can even film in four K lighting. I use three battery driven led panels. One is key light, one as feel light and one as backlight. They are also deem able. So I Children all of them. Until I get the results. I want distance. I am actually only around four feet from the backdrop. But since I can make my room almost pitch back, it is enough control. Since I feel myself, I cannot be behind the camera at the same time. I use an iPhone app for my Panasonic camera, which makes it possible for me to see a preview of the video image on my phone as well as control almost every aspect of the image. For example, assuming focusing exposure, white balance, aperture, etcetera, a great app And I know several other camera manufacturers have similar APS. So, chick, if you find one for your camera, all right. I hope you got some ideas and motivation from this. Now, get ready for your final course assignment. Just coming up in the next lesson. So see you there, my friends.
