About This Class

Do you enjoy traveling and being able to communicate with locals? Are you considering moving to Portugal? Are you already living in Portugal?

Well… this course is designed for any curious mind trying to learn European Portuguese.

Over the last years, I have been teaching Portuguese to foreigners living in Portugal. Because of that, I became familiar with the fact that most of the resources available on the internet are in Brazilian Portuguese. And, in case you didn’t notice it yet, Brazilian and European Portuguese are very different. To the point that Brazilians struggle to communicate when they arrive in Portugal.

For that reason, I decided to create a series of online courses about European Portuguese. In this second course, I am teaching you the greetings and how to present yourself in European Portuguese. The course is divided into 3 lessons:

Lesson 1 – Greetings

In this first lesson, you will learn how to greet and how to say goodbye in Portuguese. I will make sure you understand the difference between the formal and informal ways of greeting and saying goodbye. And I will even give you some insights about Portuguese culture when it comes to being polite.

Lesson 2 – What is your name?

In this lesson, you will learn how to ask and reply to the question “what is your name?”. You will learn how to conjugate the verb “chamar” in the present simple (presente do indicativo) and the personal and reflexive pronouns. You will also learn how to say “nice to meet you”.

Lesson 3 – How old are you?

In this last lesson, you will learn how to ask and reply to the question “how old are you?”. You will learn how to conjugate the verb “chamar” in the present simple (presente do indicativo) and how to count up to 70.

Once you conclude the course, I invite you to complete this course project (you can find more information about it in the "projects and resources section"). I really would like to see your video uploaded here.

To help you consolidate your knowledge I also made available a document where you can find all the vocabulary you just learned. There is also another document called “exercícios” where you can find 2 exercises to practice. You can find the solutions on the second page.

Teacher

Hello, I'm Eliana. I am a native European Portuguese speaker. I studied law at University and I recently graduated from my Marter's in International and European Law.

One of my passions is meeting people from all over the world and getting to know more about their languages and cultures. For that reason, I have been teaching Portuguese to foreigners over the last few years.

Teaching Portuguese in Portugal made me realize that there are not many resources available online for foreigners to learn European Portuguese. That was actually one of the most common complaints of my students.

For that reason, I decided to create a series of short European Portuguese courses and make them available here - on Skillshare.

I am not a Portuguese teacher. As I tol... See full profile

1. Introduction: Ola, baby endomysium Allah, the Portuguese. Any sense? Hello. Welcome to one more course of European Portuguese for beginners. And their style of eyes up in India to pumping into that. Yep, it is entire input to this. In this course, you are going to learn how to greet and how to present yourself in Portuguese. So in this course, you're going to learn different ways of saying hello to introduce yourself. But as in thirsty, to ask, what's your name? A comb to Shemesh, to ask how old are you? When coziness, thanks to tell your h at easy it, at doing that. And how exactly are you going to explore these topics? Well, this course is divided into three lessons, or in Portuguese. 3 is Allah's Allah numerous. Lesson number one is dedicated to the greetings. Edit the cat, ouch. Yeah, Illinois, the lesson to x del Como to CMS, to the question, what is your name? Yeah, alpha 3 is and the less than three quick things to the question, how old are you? You also Eliana, you still keep it at the issue that happened in the poor to guess. 2. This course project: But before we start, let me tell you about these scores protect into projects and resources section, you can find a document called fissure the present descent. In these fishes. You will have the following texts to complete with your information. All your shim felt alcohol, Daniel mouth alcohol. You should complete that file your data. There's also a square on the right side in case you want to draw your portrait or add a photo. Then upload a video of yourself saying DO sentences in Portuguese as your project and your teacher as well as other students will be able to give you feedback to LP improved faster. Keep in mind that you don't have to provide your real identity in case you don't feel comfortable with it. You may, for example, pretend that you are the Queen of England or a famous actor. It's completely up to your imagination. In the next video, I will teach you out degrees in Portuguese. Neprilysin video, when we see in art at company means that in Portuguese. 3. Lesson 1 - Greetings: But a lack Bucephalus company meant, Let's start by the greetings. So what should we say when we meet somebody? When do incontinent? I'll gain, when do, when we meet. I'll gang somebody. When do in contempt alkyne. So we could say, all laugh. Hello. Hi. This one is original from the Brazilian Portuguese, but nowadays it's widely used in Portugal amongst younger people. So these are two informal greetings. Now let's move to the more formal ones. Bundy. Good morning. Good afternoon. Good night. We don't have good evening, but we'll talk about it in a minute. So you may use these three expressions. When Britain, somebody, you're not at close weight or completely unknown people, like when you write to a shop, it doesn't mean you cannot use it with your friends. You can just avoid saying all law or joy to people you should show respect like a professor at university. Most of them are already pretty open to it, but it's always better to avoid a misunderstanding. So moving to the last one. Do the vein to Dubai means everything I'll write. This expression is commonly used right after the graphene, but you are not supposed to reply to me to it. Okay, so repeat after me. 00 00 00, 00 00 Bondi, Bondi, boy, boy, boy annuity. Bowen noise to the vein. To the vein. But what is the difference between Bondi? Boys and boys? Say, Wow, what difference, difference in difference, while a difference. Okay? So we use Bondi three in the morning during the afternoon, and Bono it during evening and night. Pretend this. Bondi do rent. Boys do rent. Targeted IPO and noise. And noise. So Mania means morning, dark means afternoon. Egn noise means night. Remember, we don't have the difference between evening and night in Portuguese after sunset is already good nights. Now let's move to a very special one which is aligned to the vine. If you're ready, live in Portugal and you have portuguese friends. And the verse is likely that you already heard this expression. A lot to the vein. You may have noticed that we don't expect you to reply to this question. It's our way of being polite to you. But what should you reply? Well, you may reply all ash that todo id ego. Hello, everything fine. And we do or simply, you can repeat a lot to do. So you can say a law that toDo or simply to do. Now, let's practice with an exercise or easier CSU. In Portuguese. I invite you to grow a piece of paper where you can write some stuff. I will present exercises to you and I'll give you ten seconds to think of the answer. If you need more time, just pause the video. Okay? So for these exercises, I will use some characters. We are going to be victimized and via written. If you already took my previous course, European Portuguese for beginners, Portuguese language overview. You'll remember these are the names of the respective colors. So voodoo, my new means, reds and v are the main screen. In this case, is going to meet with if they are friends, what do they say when they meet? So 10 seconds from now. And if you want to practice your written Portuguese, you can also write it down. Timeout. Vote him for a vote. Dimple means timeout in Portuguese. So you could have said allow oily or a lot to the buying. And there you could have replied to do. Obviously these are alternative options. She could say simply all law or oily, or you could say a lot as we usually do. And vert could have replied simply a law, or it could have said To-do the continuum. Now let's move to the next exercise. And in this case we're going to have these three guys and this lady that we're going to color nice clothes, shoe, and a horseshoe means a purple in Portuguese. That's why she's purple. So nice costume arrives to the bus stop. Many strangers are there waiting for the bus. Watch, should she say? Again, I'm going to give you 10 seconds. You can ride stands for is down if you want to practice your written Portuguese and then we'll check it. So starting now. I bought him CPU, time is over. So in this case, she doesn't know the people there. So she should use a more formal, formal written. She could have said bond, dear boy, noise. And depending on the time of the day, and they should have replied something like Bolonia or borne noise, depending also on the time of the day. So we already know how to say hello basically after these exercise. Now let's learn how to say goodbye in Portuguese. When do news displays? Again? When we say goodbye to somebody, one day. When news, Despite the mush, we say goodbye. They'll gain of somebody to somebody. In this case, Guandu newDish beams del game. So let's start with abuse. At the origin means goodbye. Zhao. Zhao also means goodbye, but it's very informal email. So say for example, touch out, like when you say bye, bye. Uh, at damning amines, see you tomorrow. Seeing it means tomorrow. At they approximate. See you next time. You use it when you're not sure when you'll see the person again. At this moon, them, See you Monday. This one is commonly used on your workplace, for example, when you say goodbye on Friday and you know, you'll be back on Monday, but you can use it with any day of the week. For example, if you know you're going to meet the person next Wednesday, you can say at the quarter. And last one, bowl things manner. Have an ice. We can also commonly used on Friday. So when you leave work, you may say, for example, both in Smyrna at this wounded. You can combine both cases. They have a nice weekend. See you Monday. Both in SS man in this wonder. Okay, now let's do a quick review of the previous slides. I will say the expression in Portuguese, and then you'll have 10 seconds, 10 seconds, no five seconds to think of the translation to English. Okay, the expressions are here written in Portuguese. So it's pretty simple. Okay, we just thought is. So let's talk about the first one. Ciao, both in Smetana means goodbye. Have a nice weekend. That they see you tomorrow. See you. As I told you before, you may use it with any day of the week. Ciao. It's an informal way of saying goodbye. It's basically by TSH. So these one is the more formal way of saying goodbye. You can also use it with your friends, but well, they should avoid chow with people who are completely unknown to you. Or you should show some respect to u. And let's move to the last one. At they are. Meaning. See you next time. So finally, we wrote in the, at the end, she gambled Alphin dashed outlet. We arrived at the end of this course, a goddess S outcome, country mental game, particular case. Now you know how to greet somebody in Portuguese. New movie do. In the next video, the EPT, indeed a. Shemesh, we are going to learn how to ask what's her name? See you there. 4. Lesson 2 - What is your name?: All laugh as a promptness. Now you'll learn how to ask for other people's names and how to say your name in European, Portuguese. Let's start by underlining that in Portuguese, it's very important to understand the difference between the formal and informal speech. If you've taken my previous course, European Portuguese for beginners, Portuguese language overview, you'll remember some of the content I'll tell you about over the next minutes. If you're speaking to somebody of the same age, are the same social position, It's natural, ill-treated by two. Do is the informal pronoun for you in European portraits. In contrast, if you're talking to an elderly or to somebody of a higher social position, you should treat them by Fauci. Vlsi is a Portuguese pronounced for you. When using these pronoun, you'll conjugate the verb in third person of the single. Beware that disease specificity of European Portuguese because in Brazilian Portuguese voice is also used in the informal contexts. So don't call somebody Brazilian person you're supposed to respect by velocity, call them by snowed or a snooty. Thus it is for is the formal pronoun for European Portuguese. So if you ask somebody for their name in an informal way, you'll say, cool mood, Shemesh, our while loop to a norm. And the person will reply, for example, it'll shambles, peek out of them. My name is Ricardo. But if you are speaking in the formal speech, you will say combs shimmer or while A0 soon ohm. And the person will reply the same. Yes, Shamele, I got my name is Ricardo when using the formal speech. And the only difference is for the person who asks, not for the person who replies. So as you can see in here, we use the verb shim, that of, of Shem not to ask for the name. And Shamata can literally mean to call. It can mean colon, like when you call somebody on the phone. Or you can mean calling like when you yell somebody's name. But it can also be used to ask people how people call them. Okay, So in the sense of what is your name? So let's conjugate this verb in the present simple, or in Portuguese. But as Xin to do indicative or. So, the personal pronouns here are written in yellow or Emmett ALL, and the reflexive pronouns are written in dread. So how do we conjugate the verb? Shimmer? Your shampoo to Shemesh ill segment. Now shim ambush ills, Shama. But when we are saying our unnamed, we're seeing that somebody. Causes by that name. So the reflexive pronouncing here, they are here to tell us to whom the action is referring to. For example, when I say Yo Shimomura, Eliana, I mean, I call myself Eliana to Shemesh to Ricardo. You call yourself Ricardo. So in this slide, I have some examples to show you. So this guy over here in blue or in Portuguese in a zoo is X1. Okay? And he's talking to each other. The baby rolls one. Says IHL chamomile Zhuang to share Mr. Eduardo ELA, the other one in here, Susanna, Ella Ella schema's Susanna. We, the three of us knows. Mm-hm, Mm-hm. Mootness. Zhuang, EDR, that is Susanna, we call ourselves Zhuang Eduardo. It was an English day. He means Miguel and Ricardo Eilish share most Miguel. But after you say the name of the person, I mean, after you asked for their name as he Whoa, what's your name and the person says their name. You should say, Nice to meet you, right? So how do you say that? How to see nice to meet you? In the informal form, you can use the second person of the singular, okay? It's the rule into formal formula. You always use the second person singular, and in the more formal form, you use the third person. So you will say something like, But is it and Quincy it. But when using the formal formula, you'll use the third person. And in this case, you should do it accordingly with the sex of the person you're talking to. So if he is a, he is a man, you should say, inconceivable. If it is a woman, you should say. But as it increases, remember that usually the difference between the masculine and feminine in Portugal there, in Portuguese, the rule is that the masculine usually ends with an O and a feminine usually ends with an a, so present and if he is a man, but does it in Queens sila, if she's a woman. So can you avoid all these mass? Because let's be serious. If you're speaking to somebody new formal way, it's easy, but if you're speaking to from away, you might get like, all confused, should I say present in green Seal or present queen sealer? Well, the easiest way is simply to say, but as it okay. Like Ally, you show me Leanne 82. And the other one says, although some record, and I simply say, okay, it's pretty simple if you do it that way. So now we arrived at the end of this lesson. A god just abscond. Now, you know how to ask for somebody's name. And in the next video, we'll talk about H quenches. Understand. See you touch out. 5. Lesson 3 - How old are you?: Niche style of them, Srilanka silvery IV, that in this lesson we are going to talk about H. The central question here is, how old are you? Or when to change quantity? How many unknowns do you have? Went to lunch? Thanks. As you can see in Portuguese, we use the verb to have or there. Ask people about your age. In case you took my previous course, eruption Portuguese for beginners, Portuguese language overview, you already know deserve. In any case, let's cause you get to the end, shall we? So div, that is into doing DKA TiVo verb to have present simple. So here's the verb in Portuguese and here's the translation to English. You, Daniel. I had to finish. You have field time. He has L at time. She has notched image. We have Wasserstein. You have ill stay. They have masculine. Mustang. They have feminine. English is the masculine plural pronoun to day. In Portuguese, Elish is the masculine, feminine pronoun for day in Portugal. But to tell people how old are you, you need more than just a verb, right? You must know the numbers in Portuguese. So here's the numbers up to 70. I don't believe you'll need more than that at least for now. So I will pronounce each number and I invite you to repeat it after me. Okay? So uhm uhm, Deutsche, deutsche Trish, trace through what, through Qu, seeing core. Se set. Or two for it to know. All those those three characters. This, this, this, this, this sector to do, to this novel LinkedIn. So from 20 on, the way of forming a number is basically by adding 220. The other numbers. You do vintage, you 20 and 1. E means ends, and the numbers from one to nine are already in here. So it's pretty simple. Vintage 21, 22. And you do the same for the 30 to 40, basically for all the numbers up to 100. So let's continue. 3 into drink that. You drink what into what into sin, into sin Quinta Santa, Santa into the into. So moving on. Like anything else in Portuguese, you must use the second person of the singular to refer to somebody in an informal way, and in the third person singular to refer to them in a formal way. So let's start by the informal, one of the E dot. Informal for lot to talk about a dot h file out. So a dot to talk about the age is exemple. We will have two characters, E, red and green. My loop, the alveolus than red asks green, range expanded. And green replies, cinco. I am five years old. But don't forget, these was an informal conversation. Okay. But what about if you're talking to an older person or to a complete stranger watching you do. So. Let's move to the formal. For the last saw, a daddy food Mao. Again, we have two characters who secured with my new layer. Ubuntu OS new theater. Mr. Red asks Mr. Green, who spawned. Mr. Green, replies, sync went then any scales? Green is a bit older. As you may have noticed in the previous slide, chlorine was just five years old, in this case is 50 years old. So to sum up, in the informal conversation, you use the second person of the singular, whereas in the formal conversation used third person singular. So in informal conversation, you ask the question, when to Zionists. And the person who applies your time, you thought alcohol or simply dynamo Laudato. In the form of conversation, you ask one to Zeno's thing, and again, the person replies. It will tell you dot-dot-dot or simply tiny thought-out. As you can see, you're applying the same wing, both formal and informal conversations. The difference is in the way people address you, not in the way you talk about yourself. So now, what a lab. Pretty cool. Let's go practice it. So now I'm going to show you an example of a presentation that includes all the topics we have learned until now. And it sums up the previous, previous lessons. Okay, so let's go for the example. It was shameless Zhuan. Hello, my name is well, he also do Portugal. I am from Portugal. In this case, ys from Portugal. But if he was from other countries or from other country, it could say, for example, it also defensive. I am from France. It was so the Romanian. I am from Germany. He also, they Thallium. I am from Italy, or also the Hosea. I am from Russia. And now is when to talk about is h e cinco anos. I am 25 years old. But knowledge play close attention to these one, okay, because in Portuguese, you don't say, I am 25 years old. You say instead, I have 25 years. Don't forget that in Portuguese, you use the verb to have to talk about age. Okay? You can omit the pronoun in here. You don't need always to say LTI new mentees in quench, you can say simply Thang The inducing quench. And basically with this information, you know, everything you need to know to complete the course projects. Just put it on top. Believe that the organ now you know how to ask for somebody's age. No simple video followed him. The LDS new processing video. I'll put them in three. Nice, he concluded him sucrose. In the next video, we will make some final remarks about discourse and say goodbye. 6. To sum up: Again Zao theme and we arrived at the end. Of course. In this course, you learned that I am poor to gauge how to greet in Portuguese at Bigtable data quality. To ask what's your name? To present yourself? A political thought went to Zen stage to ask, how old are you? Sober to either add to talk about your age. Nobody either. Don't forget to complete the course project. Then load the feature, the present the sound, and record yourself saying those sentences. These way. I can give you some feedback on your pronunciation. There's household vocabulary document where you can track the vocabulary at, you just learn here. And there's also another document where you find two exercises you can use to practice the greetings in Portuguese. The solutions are in the second page so you can correct it yourself. Any doubts, please let me know in the comments section. Thank you for being my students already gathered precision. You alone at the APTA CMA.
