2. Unit 1 : Statistics in English : Let's learn ten common
phrases for talking about statistics in English, these phrases are commonly used by native English speakers. You might face them in different news TV channels and different academic
passages and books. So guys, let's dive in. Let's start with this phrase. The crime rate rose. Yes, the crime rate rose. So as you know, guys crime rate is a number of crimes that are committed during your period of time in a particular place. Right here the word rose is
the past of the words arise, which means to increase
crime rate is the count of crimes compile to assist the effectiveness of
criminal control policy. We can also use other
wars like divorce rate, marriage rate, death rate,
insurance rate, etc. The word rate is the speed at which something
happens or changes. Or we can say the amount
or number of times it happens or changes in
a particular period. For example, the
overall crime rate was down 11% last year. Or we can say, police often
concentrate patrols in poor neighborhoods
with high crime rates. The second phrase, the
crime rate went up. Yes, the crime rate went up. As you know guys, if a price
or amount or level goes up, it becomes higher or
greater than it was. Here it means the number of
crime rate has increased. We could also say the divorce
or death rate went up, etc. There was a sharp
increase in crying. Yes, there was a sharp
increase in crime. Sharp increase here means a sudden and large
increase, right? So there was a sudden and
large increase in crime. For example, there is a sharp
increase in death rate. The virus is spreading quickly and we cannot
control it at all. There was a gradual
water wise and cry. Yes, there was a
gradual rise in crime. Use the adjective gradual
to describe something that happened slowly
and bit by bit. For example, there
is a gradual rise in the amount of
daylight in winter. So gradual arise here it means a slow increase in something. For example, there is a gradual rise in
the air pollution, which means the air pollution
is increasing bit by bit. Gradual rise. There was a spike in cry, yes, as pi in crime. Spike here means a sudden
increase and then decrease. Spike means to rise to a higher amount price or level usually before
going down again. For example, the jobless rate in October spiked to
a five-year high, the crime rate reached its
peak is reached its peak, as you know, guys peak is the
point at top of a mountain. And it is one of the most
difficult peaks to climb. Peak here means
the highest point. The highest point, we usually
say reach something's peak, which means to get to the
highest point of something. For example, the jobless
rate reached its peak, so it is the highest point
and therefore we are having the most Joplin people in
the country reach its peak. The crime rate plateaued,
yes, plateaued. Plateau here means state
at the same level. So Plateau means to reach a particular level and then
stay the same plateau. So my dear friends,
It's a period during which there are
no large changes. For example, the US
death rate reached a plateau in the 1960's
before declining suddenly. There was a slight
decrease in crying. As you know guys
here slide means small in amount or degree? Yes, small in amount or degree. So slight decrease is a
smaller eyes in something, for example, there has been a slight decrease in
death rate recently. We must control this and find the remedy for this virus
before many people die. Yes, slight decrease
in death rate. The next common phrase is
the crime rate dropped. As you know, guys
drop here means an instance of falling
and decreasing. The crime rate. Dropped. Drop is to move to a lower level or cause something to
move to a lower level. For example, the water level in the flooded region has
finally began to drop. For example, we had to drop our prices because
of the recession, the crime rate plummeted. Yes, the crime rate plummeted. Plummet here means decreased
a lot and very quickly. So plummet means to fall
very quickly and subtly. For example, house prices have plummeted in
the recent months. Plummet.

rates reached its peak. We can no longer control

more satisfied. This phrase is used
by someone who simply doesn't have any

if we arrived late. So it means it
would not amaze me. It would be typical
if we arrived late. There's a good chance
it will rain tomorrow. There is a good chance
it will rain tomorrow. There is a good chance
that plus applause. What do you want to say
that something might happen and the possibility
is pretty high. You will say there is

46. Checking Section : Guys, Audio ready to check your understanding and practice? If yes, let's do it. Keep in mind you
have five seconds to think and find the right phrase. So let's do it. What would you say if
you can't sleep at night because you are
worried about something, because you're anxious and you feel worried
about something. What phrase native speakers
use ear? Can you remember? They usually say, it's been
keeping me up at night. Yes. It's been keeping
me up at night. Imagine you have a really big
problem that worries you, but then you realize
it's solved. So you'll feel
fine to hear that. How native speakers
describe this feeling, they usually use these phrases. You'll have no idea
what a relief it is. What are relieve or that's
a huge load off my mind. Or we could say that had
me worried for a moment. That had me worried
for a moment. Guys, what if thoughts
that you try to avoid keep coming into your mind
and you cannot stop it. How would you say this? We usually say, I can't help
thinking about this problem. I can't help thinking
about this problem. Native speaker is usually use these phrases to say
that you are happy. Something bad happen. Is you feel happy because something bad, it didn't happen. What is it? We usually say thing
goodness, or thank God. For example, Thank God,
you're fine, brother. What is a polite
way native speakers use at the beginning
of a sentence for actually politely telling
someone that something might make them sad
or disappointed. What does it say? I'm afraid like I'm afraid
your dad is not going to be able to stand
on his feet again. I'm afraid that is used at
the beginning of a sentence. I'm afraid.
47. Unit 10: Speaking about Future : Are you ready to learn
ten common phrases to speak about future? Yes, to talk about future. What phrase is usually used
to speak about the future? In this video, we
will introduce them. So guys, let's get started. Let's start with the
first phrase and that's it'll happen any day now. Yes. It'll happen any day now. Which means something
will happen within the next few days. Or we could say something
will happen in near future. It'll happen any day now. For example, we are expecting a phone call from him any day now or any day now the
decision could be made. So the phrase any day
now means something will happen very
soon in near future. It's right around
the coronary. Yes. It's right around the corner. Well, at time or event that
is just around the coronary, he is coming very soon
and happening very soon, for example, it is
still call today, but spring is just
around the corner, which means it will
happen very soon. If you say that something
is around the coronary, You mean that it will happen very soon in British English, you can also say
that something is around the corner or something
is around the corner, for example, the
economic recovery is just around the corner. It will happen very soon
in the near future. In the near future clearly means very soon or within
the short time. This term employs near in the sense of actually
close at hand. A usage dating from
about the 1600s, for example, will be needing a new car in the near future. Or I will graduate from this university in
the near future. Or we could say, I hope to have an answer
for you in the near future. We'll happen in our lifetime or it won't happen in our lifetime. So guys, in your lifetime means in the next 50 or 60 years, for example, you could say medicine is
progressing very fast. I think a cure for cancer will be developed in our lifetime, which means it will happen
in the next 5060 years. We also have an expression, once in a lifetime, which means very rare
or very rarely a once in a lifetime opportunity. This sort of opportunity comes
along once in a lifetime. Yes, once in a
lifetime opportunity. The next common sentence
on the phrase is, it's a sign of things to come, or it's a taste of
things to come. But we usually say it's a
sign of things to come. It indicates how things
will be in the future. Use this phrase when
something happens that indicates how things
will be in the future. For example, if the economy is starting to get worse and worse, you could say three
people I know have lost their job recently. This is a sign of
things to come, meaning that you believe many more people will lose
their job in the near future. I'm counting down the days until counting down the
days until which means excited about
the future event. I can wait for it to happen. I'm counting the days until use this phrase when
you are anxiously awaiting a future event, you want it to happen. Their resume, for example,
counting the days. Yes, I'm counting down the days until my
trip to the Canada. Counting down the days until my trip to the Canada
sooner or later. Sooner or later, or it's
bound to happen eventually, sooner or later,
which means it will definitely happen
sometime in the future. Use this phrase to say
that something will definitely happen
sometimes in the future. It may be soon or it may
be far in the future, but it will finally happen. For example, you
will get married to hair sooner or later. The phrase It's bound to happen eventually means it will happen. Finally, if you say that
something is bound to happen, you mean that you are sure
it will happen because it is a natural consequence
of something that is already known or exists. The next counter phrase is, I'll get around to it. I'll get around to it, which means I'll do it
sometime in the future, but I don't know exactly
when I'll get around to it. So my dear friends
use this phrase to say that you will do something in the future
when you have time for it. It is usually used
for activities that are not especially urgent. I will do it right away
or I'll get right on it. I'll get right on it. This phrase means I'll
do it immediately. Use this phrase to
say that you will do something in the future
as soon as possible. These expressions are used for urgent tasks and this
is my favorite. One. Time will tell. Time will tell what does mean. This means in the future, we will know if
something is true, false, good or bad. Time will tell. Guys, use this
phrase to say that a situation is
currently uncertain but in the future it will
become clear, crystal clear. For example, if you
are discussing whether or not the country's
new president is good, you could say, time will tell to say that the answer will
be revealed in the future, in the near future. So don't worry about anything.

the corner error. It's just around the corner. Then Sarah says, brilliant, I'm very happy for you. Did you buy the wedding clothes? Then Lily says, no, but I'll get around to it. I'll get around to it. I'll get around to it. Here. Jack Marshall are having a conversation

have quake their jobs. Then the boss says,

company, we'd go bankrupt. Sooner or later this
company would go bankrupt. Here, Jack and Marshall have decided to start a new business. So Jack starts the
conversation and says, Marshall, do you study
the new magazines? They can help you
think of better ideas. Marshall replies, Not yet, but I'll get around to it. I'm sure we will be very
successful sooner or later. I'm scared things don't go
well as soon as we expect. We need to be very cautious. We need to be very cautious. Here. Ted and his wife
are speaking about it, big threat and that's
an earthquake. So Ted starts the
conversation that says, Have you seen the news? They say a big
earthquake might occur. Do you think it will

answering your question. Yes, there are ten ways native English American speakers use to avoid answering question. Guys, Let's dive in,
Let's understand them. Let's start with the
first phrase on that. No comment. No comment. These phrases used for
refusing to answer a question, especially in a
sensitive situation. No comment is a phrase
used as a response to journalist inquiries
which the respondent doesn't want to answer. No comment. No comment indicates
that the speaker doesn't choose to say anything
to the subject. We could also say
something like this. I don't have anything
to say about that. I don't have anything
to say about that. No comment. I'm not at liberty to say. I'm not at liberty to say, which means I don't have the permission to give
them information. If somebody asks a question about one of your best friends, which is a bit personal
leak would say, I'm not at liberty to say, which means you are not
permitted to give information. The next common or
phrases, wait and see. Yes, wait and see, which means you will
discover the answer later. If you would tell someone
to wait and see you tell them that they
must be patient or that they must not worry
about what is going to happen in the future because they have
to control over it. For example, we'll have to
wait and see what happens. We'll have to wait
and see what happens. Let me get back to you. Yes, let me get back to you, which means I will give
you the answer later. Maybe you are
talking to a person you want to do business with. The personal responds by saying, I'll get back to you. It literally means I will lose turn your
message or I always, I will respond to you or
communication very soon later. If a teacher tells you, oh, let me get back to
you in the middle of that speech or in the
middle of the class, it means it will, he will, sorry, he will
talk to you probably later when the class is over so he can answer your
question carefully. I will get back to you. Yes, I will get back to you. I'm sorry, that's confidential. Confidential here
means private and intended to be kept secret. Use this phrase to say
that the answer or the information is often
efficiently secret. Lawyers and doctors
can't give details about their clients or patients because the information
is confidential. You could also say, I'm
sorry, that's personal. In order to avoid talking about
personal issues politely, imagine someone asks
you about your income. If you believe that that's
something personal, you could say I'm
sorry, that's personal. I'm sorry. That's personal. I'd rather not talk about it. I'd rather not talk about it. This is a very polite and
formal phrase we could use to avoid talking
about something, some issues which we don't feel comfortable speaking about. I'd rather not talk about it. If you say that you would
rather not do something, You mean politely, you
don't want to do something. I'd rather not do something. It's none of your business. This expression is a
bit rude and informal. It means the
information is private. It's not something
you need to know. So stop asking me about this. You could also say, mind your own business. Mind your own business. It's none of your business
and mind your own business are slightly rude when said
directly to the person. So this is something
you only want to use with maybe very
good friends or perhaps roots stranger who is
making personal inquiries. Mind your own business. This is used for
telling some modern rudely that you are not going to tell them about
something because it doesn't effect
or involve them. Mind your own business. Why do you want to know? Yes. Why do you want to know? We usually use this
when you cannot find any reason to
explain something. You're asking me about whether my brother
is married or not. Why do you want to know
why do you want to know?

about it right now. I'd rather not talk about it. It's none of your business. Business. It's none of your business. It's none of your business. Subtract manager you've

which you are working in, but you think it's a secret and you must not
share it with them. So what phrase can you use here? We could use three phrases here. I'm not at liberty to say, or, I'm sorry, that's personal. Or we could say, I'm sorry,
that's confidential. I'm sorry, that's confidential. Native speaker is

57. Unit 12 : Certainty and Possibility : In this video, I want to speak about some phrases for speaking about certainty and probability. There are some common
phrases used by native speakers when
they want to speak about subjects like certainty
and probability. So guys, let's understand
these phrases. Let's start with the
first simple phrase, and that's absolutely sure. Native American speakers
usually use this phrase when they are 100% sure
about something. We could also say
completely sure or I'm very sure, absolutely convinced. Or I'm definitely sure. For example, I'm absolutely sure that hair
birthday is tomorrow, so let's buy some
nice gift to her. Yes. I'm absolutely sure that
hair birthdays tomorrow. Positive. That's yes. I'm positive. That positive means I'm certain. It is usually used when
there is a reason to express certainty
in some statement. So you could say, Do you think it will
be called tomorrow? I'm positive, which
means I'm certain. I'm sure I have no doubt that. I have no doubt that
this is used for emphasizing that something
seems certain or very likely. For example, no doubt she will tell me everything
when she's ready. I have no doubt or
the short form. No doubt that she will tell me everything
when she's ready. I'm a 100% certain. 100% certain. This is another
general statement and symptoms we could use
to emphasize that you agree completely
with something or that's something completely
right or wrong. I'm 100% certain. Chances are that. Chances are that, which means
this will probably happen. So we use this
phrase to say that something is likely to happen. For example, chances are that
they will be late anyway. Chances are that they
will be late anyway. This is used for saying
that something is likely to happen
but not certain. The chances are that I will be looking for
a new job soon. The chances are that I will be looking for a new job soon. Odds are that. That's another common phrase. This phrase means it
will probably happen. So this phrase is used to
say that it's actually very likely or probable that something is the
case or will happen. Odds are that, for example, if you own your own business, odds are that you
have had to deal with one of these
many frustrations. Firsthand. Or for example, I
will try to get there before you have
started eating dinner, but the odds are, I want to make it
before eight o'clock. But the odds are I want I want make it before
eight o'clock. I seriously doubt it. You say I doubted as a response to a question
or a statement about something that you think
is untrue or unlikely. I seriously doubt it. For example, you think she
stole the money, come on. I seriously doubt it. So it means that you think
it is untrue or unlikely? I don't think so. I don't think so. This phrase is also
used to refuse something that is
proposed or suggested. For example, you believe it
will be raining tomorrow? I don't think so.
I don't think so. In contrast, the phrase
I think so he's used to say that you believe
that something is true. You believe that
something is true, that a particular
situation exists, That's something will happen, for example, has she accepted
the job? I think so. I think so. There's not much chance of that. There is not much
chance of that, which means something is
not likely to happen. We can also say not a chance, which means that there
is no probability. Another chance, for example, do you think I could
pass for a 21-year-old? Not a chance. Not as chance. I could embed on it. Yes, I couldn't bet on it. This phrase means there is a small chance it could happen, but it probably won't happen. I wouldn't bet on it. This informal phrase
is used to express doubt about an
assertion or situation. For example, he may be
a suitable companion, but I wouldn't bet on it. I wouldn't bet on it. This is used to tell someone
that you think something is unlikely to be
true or to happen, do you think they
will give me back the money they owe me? I would embed on it. I wouldn't bet on it, that they'll never happen. That will never happen. We use this phrase when we are certain that something
will not happen. For example, you mean jack will graduate from our explored
the university very soon. Come on, that LL never happen. He's a dumb man. That will never happen. He's a stupid man. That L never happen.
