Hi, thanks for taking the time to view my profile, I'm a wallpaper and surface pattern designer based in Derbyshire on the edge of the stunning Peak District in the UK. I've always been drawn to bold detailed patterns full of drama; as a child, I remember visually following where a pattern would travel to on wallpaper, carpets and curtains. This passion for analysing how patterns fit together to create a statement of beauty within an interior informs my ultimate goal of wallpaper design.

I love to draw and my process starts with detailed hand-drawn motifs which I work up into digital patterns in Illustrator. I strive to produce elegant and beautiful designs staying true to my own unique, opulent and intense style. My inspiration comes from man... See full profile

We're going to collect some random items from around your home will arrange them inside a box lid or trey will observe the empty spaces in between the items thistles. The negative space will draw the unusual shapes created in the negative space. So let's see where it takes. You create a drawing. You will learn to understand negative space. Create your own negative space. Trey, Train your eye to find unusual shapes. Draw these shapes. Experiment using scale, composition and color class ethos. There is no vital wrong with this. Keep an open mind guided by what you enjoy. It is your time to draw on, explore in a safe and on judging place and have fun with it. 4. What You Need: pdf of what you need a phone to take pictures of your work sketchbook or paper pencil selection of pens or highlighters on a razor sharp inner a box lid or trade selection of random items that will fit in a box. Little tray. Any media you want, such as colored pens, pencils and paints, paintbrushes, pots of water, etcetera. What is a negative space trey vessel, such as a lit of a box tray or shallow box to arrange random items in? You can find random items for this exercise all over your home. Here are some examples. A sewing box, kitchen drawer, kid's toys, jewelry box, art supplies and you're going desk. Our talk history. What I found. Just a moment. So here's a collection off my random stuff. I'm just going around the house and collected a few things. So I've got some straight things. So we got things in the kitchen like a knife. We've got a force. Lovely antique for real, like these shapes here. Got a salad fork like a wooden server fork. Got some spoons, so there's a nice, long, straight things. Now I've also got some geometric things, so I've raided my kid's Lego. For that, we've got some lovely shapes. There also managed to find this lovely curve. I think it's a handy culture. Also. Got this really pretty ticket. Andi. Ah, it's just got a lovely serrated edge on it. And these two little holes, then I just really drawn to it like that. And we've also got some round things. So I've got a Kilner jar ring here. What a hair band. Onda lasted badge. I got some buttons as well. Got stones on this curvy sort of dish. I just really like shape of that. Found some little tweezers or pliers. I should say. They just make some really nice shapes, I thought. And then we got sons of strange things, like a broken bits of dinosaur is a leg, a toy tree. One of the round thing here got a coaching real, and then I found some things that sort of wiggle and curve that we can drape over the top of everything. So we've got some ribbon on my favorite necklace, but I just really like the shapes on this, and it's already forming some lovely negative shapes. We've got this snake that does this so I think we can do something really cool with him. Okay, So next we're gonna make our negative space, Trey. 5. How To Do It: Okay, so I've put all my random stuff into a box. So it's all in one place and I can reach easily behind that box. I've got a box lid now. This is and I care box lid. But you could use a shoebox lead or even a tray. Anything you like. Now what we're gonna dio we're gonna create some make negative space between some items. So let's just start placing on the long, long items that you've got things like screws place them around to me like this coming out here. Okay? Not gonna put in the geometric things. Just gonna chuck that. Okay, so I was just gonna build oc pit shocked puts, um, round things. And now, Now, you could just empty the box into trade on. That would be fine, but I'm gonna just take a bit of time and just place things in now. A lot of things overlapping. So the idea is that you're gonna create some amazing negative shut negative space shapes. So the negative space is the space in between. Little things on a tweet ploy, us rush week of them, Mr. Dinosaur Tail could goes just female stones and things in around the edges, so I may or may not use everything. Way. Go. Now I'm going to get the sort of curvy, wiggly things like the necklace and just drape. So because of the moment, we've got lots of straight lines or if he curves here, I think we'll put some curves and see if it gets and amazing shapes snaking on right now is quite a lot. Quite a lot going on there. I might just put a better ribbon in a swell just to show you what I'm a sigh stray pit over So you get some some other things going on. Okay, I think we're done. I'm just gonna refresh you about the negative space, because these are the things that we're gonna draw now, The reason I've used a nice bright colored Oxlade it so that you can see the negative space which will love you. Bright yellow bits. So we've got things like this. The shape here, Here we go on. Go on. Lovely shape. That nice shape going on here. Quite big shaper was a nice one. Hair. So this way, just by laying things out randomly or or in in an order you can create some really unusual shapes because quite hard draw a different shaped is different to say your everyday geometric shapes, like a square circle semicircle, hexagon, etcetera. So this is quite a fun thing to do. So let's have a go call my sketchbook and make sure you can see So I'm just gonna place this here so you can see what I'm drawing. So we'll go for this shape here, so just enjoy this. Just have fun, an experiment, and just drool the negative space. I'm gonna have a look at this space here around the jawline. A sore leg, Mikhail. It doesn't have to look exactly the same. You can kind of ad lib a bit. It's entirely up to you. So I'm gonna go for this space here. You've got the necklace because from the necklace, the hair band, the rubber band on a bit of lego. So that's Ah, yeah. Quite a different shape, huh? We can. It was nice. Kirby shape here quite like that. So I'm just I'm just drawing what I'm drawn to. Basically. Now I got this nice curve going around the nose of this airplane thing. This is quite a big shape swim. So I'm going to finish it when my sketch for kids and then we got a shape Looks like in story day. So let's see what else we could find. So here we are, the dinosaur shape during this whole town. Let's have a go. That one. Okay, so So we've got Yeah, we've got really cool shape here. So with the antique fork in the necklace of the logo on the curve here, I'm gonna finish it about here yet. We've got an interesting shape there, so you can draw them separately. As I've done here. Well, you convey. Draw them on top of each other randomly. You know, as usual, it's completely up to you how you want to do it. You know, you could even know, Poppy. What I've got here all burned clacks and things for yourself, Which I think the problem be really good fun, actually. And it breed more personal two years. Well, okay, so here are some of the shapes that we've found in there really unusual shapes. This is what I love about negative space. You come up with shapes that you just probably would never thought off really good fun. And when you're overlap them, if you choose to when you're drawing them, you can do all sorts of things where they overlaid on, color them in or just rub the Mao. It's entirely up to you. So this is a really good fun exploration exercise, so I hope you enjoy it. Just gathered a few bits of different media here before I start drawing all the negative space in my negative space trade. Now I've got a few different pens here at the moment. I really like this union pen. This fine line. It's a point to It's really fine. Real enough. That one was Go brush pen handy, Okay? And then I got a graphic pen. A blood line painter that was quite nice, Quite thick. One, that one. That was really good for coloring. Stolid chunks. Color Got maraba after my pencil on a small pens here. Should I need I'm gonna put some time lapse and just have a good old draw negative space, and then you can watch it and see what happens here is my negative space picture had a little fun during its very relaxing just following the shapes that I could see all the negative spaces, so I started off on this corner, drawing while I could actually see on. Then, as I went on, I sort of just started placing shapes wherever I wanted. And he also started to change the scale. Now, I hope you really have a lot of fun with this because I love during this What I'm gonna do now, I'm gonna put it on time. Lapse again. I'm just gonna have a little bit of a color and a little bit of a play and just see where I can take this next. I hope you have a lot of fun with this exercise. Good luck. And here is the end result is my colored in negative space picture had a lot of thunder in this. I'm just going to show you it. Compared to the original negative space. Trey has taken a picture of it here. It means that one side there we go now, looking at these side by side, you probably have no idea that they're actually related in some way. But obviously, you and I can tell because we've gone through and we've We've looked at the shapes and we've drawn them on, then we've explored them further and come from in. I really like doing this exercise because it doesn't matter what the end result is, and I find that really refreshing. In my my own design work, I draw incredibly detailed. Andi, I love that I love doing that. I also really like doing this. I think any way I can describe it is sort of abstract, unintentional relaxation drawing. And I think it's a good way to break down those air self imposed barriers or perfection that we all put in the way is artists and perfection can sometimes get in the way of actually starting on a blank piece of paper. Sometimes have fun making your own negative space tray. But if you haven't got time, I have included a PdF of this photograph. So get cracking straight away. If you just want to do the nice relaxing coloring bit. There's also a pdf of my pencil drawing, too. It's entirely up to you how you do this Either way, I'd love to see your results in the project page class. Of course, there was no light along with this. Keep an open mind regarded by what you enjoy. This is your time to draw and explore in a safe andan judging place on. Have fun with it. Remember to take a picture on your phone, off your work in progress and, um result. Share them in the project page to complete your class project. 6. Final Thoughts: Thank you for taking my class.
