1. Dotty Box Earrings - learn how to make hollow boxes!: My name is Joe Antonini. I'm Joy designer and cheater for the South Coast UK on welcome to the dot E books. As you can see, these earrings have got quite a chunk. Heat design, every simple shape, nice and round texture on the front and the back on. And they've got quite a wide depth to them. But they are still beautifully right on. That is because the hearing is a books, as the name of the project suggests, it is hollow. So what she using Friday thin material is hollow inside, as they will create a nice, chunky hearing design. Without the hearing being uncomfortably heavy in this class, I'm going to show you how to prepare the wall, how to solder both the top on the bottom on the wall, and I'm going to show you a way of creating a really nice strong doing the ear wire. We could see the last thing you want. It's for the You want to break off after a while of wearing these earrings, so I'm going to show you quite a few chips. I'm also going to show you how to recycle resize on texture silver using the rolling mill because I'm going to be using pieces left over from other projects to create the materials that I need for this project quite like doing that you may have seen in my other video classes. However, you don't have to do that. What? I'm gonna be using a rolling mill. You do not actually need one for this class. You can buy silver already being sizes on profiles, dimensions that you actually need for the project. And you can texture silver using hammers, texture punches instead of a rolling mill. Or indeed, you leave it nice and smooth and just go for the very simple look. The hearings. Once you've mastered techniques, you don't have to stick to round boxes. You can change the shape into almost anything you like leaf shapes, teardrops, ovals, squares and rectangles or work beautifully well, and you also don't have to stick to earrings for these boxes as well. During a hole from one side, which the other creates a beach abuse Lee lightweight but really lovely to string with other beads to create a necklace or a bracelet. You can also make dependence using these techniques as well. So if you're ready to get started, let's have materials and equipment that you've been to need to make the Aarons
2. Dotty Box Earrings - materials: the's air, the materials time going to use to make the box shaped earrings. The front of the back of the earrings are going to be made from the Peter studies over sheets that you see here. It's currently about 0.5 millimeters in thickness. It's actually being left over from a project that didn't quite work out. But of course, one of the wonderful things about this craft is it. We can reuse. Recycle. I lost the materials. It's about 15 16 millimeters wide. Andi, just under 18 centimeters long. It's much longer than I need, but whatever's left over will often get used for another project as a safety sheet is currently about no 0.5 millimeters thickness. But I'm actually going to textured by sending for the rolling mill, which is going to mean that it's going to turn out to be a little bit thinner, and I'll double check the thickness of it once I've done that to show you now. Normally, this thickness off sheet is far too thin and therefore not strong enough to make earrings of this size. We have to make Mary the tiniest the stud earrings on. That would be fine beginning to this size would not be strong enough normally, but ah ha reform is actually a very strong shape on. Therefore, we can use much sinner sheet than we do normally, so even down as low as about 0.45 millimeters would be okay for this. You could go as high as 0.6 point seven if that's what you got, and you haven't got a rolling mill to thin it out. But you might want to save that for another project, and by pieces, it's Singer to make thes earrings on cost a little bit less in terms. The materials, the site of the box, are going to be made out off this off. Cut off over wire. It's leftover from making Bangles on ditz, currently about five millimeters wide by 2.5 millimeters thick. It's far too short to be used for much at the moment, and it's also fun to sick to be used for science of the box. And you also might be able to see some hammer marks on it. Where students, my workshops have used it to practice their hammering to see what textures they like from the various hammers. But By the time it's being through the rolling mill, it's going to be a great deal longer. Much singer on those marks have disappeared, making it perfect for the site of the box. Of course, you don't have to use a piece of scrap and roll that through the rolling mill to make that change. A why for the edges of the box, most brilliant suppliers provide a great range off different dimensions of rectangular wine nowadays. So you're bound to find something that fits your project. I'd say this project you could get away with having the wall depths by only about three millimeters. So the widest dimension across the rectangular weir the only material here this isn't being recycled from a leftover piece or another project is the length of your 30.8 millimeter wire that I'm going to use for the air wires. Of course, this is much longer again that we need. So I'm just going to cut off the links that we need for the air wires
3. Dotty Box Earrings - equipment: thing is most of the equipment that you're going to need to make the dotty box hearings. There are, ah, couple off. Larger pieces don't fit on their shots as I will show you in a moment. Of course, there is the soldering equipment as well that I'll show you in the next section off the class now, although you won't actually see me using the jewellers sore in this class, I have got it out because you might want to use it because you might not want to make round earrings. You might want to make a different shape instead. So whereas I'm using my disk Attar to cut out the top and bottom of the box, you might want to sort out shapes out of silver sheet and said So what? That out. So you can see it and know that you might actually need it. Of course I'm going to be using the bench paint to support my work on. That would be pretty essential if you're going to be soaring out as well. That is at the top and bottom off my box are going to be formed from discs that I'm going to cut out with my disk. Attar. This is a new discussed er that I haven't used in video ulcers before. So I'll show you how that this one differs slightly for my pay. One onder show you how it works. The old hammer is here because I'm going to use that a hammer the punch of discounter through the metal to cuts the disks. But the sheets that I'm going to be using is going to be textured through my rolling mills . I'm going to use my lovely dust and rolling mill to put a pattern into of silver or show you how to set that up. But I'm also going to use the rolling mill to roll out the short piece of over wire that you saw in the material section through the rolling mill to make it longer and flatter to form the walls off the boxes So my rolling mills don't get quite a workout in this class. But you don't actually need one for this project. I'm just using it, but I like to use it shades more tips with it. I like to show you as well how easy it is to recycle some of your materials you can use rectangular weir to make the walls. You don't have to roll it out yourself from scrap between. Likewise, with sheet, you could texture it with hammers with texture punches. We could leave a complete smooth. It's absolutely up to you, but however you come across the wire to make the box walls, you are going to need to cut it to size. So again you could use it. Your sore. But it is really quite thin, as in the case of mine, you might be undercut it through really neatly, just with a pair of snips, maybe the same snips that you use for cutting your solder as it in the case with mine. I'm going to use the ruler on the Sharpie to measure how long a piece retained the wire needs to be on the ruler as well. It's going to be used to measure the not 0.8 millimeter wire, so used the ear wise. We're going to use the Engineers Square to help you make certain that the ends of the rectangular why are nice and square so it could be sold it nice on neatly. Andi, I'm going to be fighting those end square with my six inch file, which will be used for a couple of jobs during the class as well. The district calipers are again another optional piece of equipment. But when I'm rolling, why or sheet for the rolling mill with them cycling it? I do like to have those handy, so I can double check the dimensions over my metal. Once the wars are soldered, I'm going to need to shape them into beautiful rounds on. I'm going to shape thumb around this smaller triple it. It's smaller than a ring, tribble it. But I know the size off wars that I'm going to be making about 14 millimeters in diameter and not quite going to fit on the ring. Triplet. I'm going to hammer thumb up against attribute using a nylon hammer that you can see here. I'm going to be threading the ear wires through holes in the box walls, so I'm going to use my bench drill to help me to do that on. I've got a no 0.9 millimeter Drillbit in the drill. I'm going to be using various grace of Emery paper as well as a six inch flat file to tidy up around the outside of the box and make sure that that's really nice and neat and beautifully finished on the last tours that you can see here are going to be used for finishing off the ear wise and cut the ear wires with the wire cutters could file the end of them smooth with the flat needle file. I'm going to shape some around Step two Mandel on. I'm going to finish off the ends of them with flat file. I'm also going to strengthen the shape of the ear wise by hammering them a little bit on the ear wise. We sported on the bench block with a leather question underneath as I hammer. As I said, This is a soldering project of sorts. Also, have a look at the soldering equipment that we're going to need to make the earrings
4. Dotty Box Earrings - soldering equipment: thing is the soldier equipment that I use for all of my small projects, such as earrings and sore pendants, everything sitting on a couple of slate tiles, a heatproof surface to help protect my desk on my work sits on a couple of soldering bricks or soldering blocks, while some heating it up. One of these soldering bricks is made of a softer material than the others. Because it's softer, it's picked up some dips and some cracks in it. It's being used over the years, and these could be very useful for supporting work that isn't completely flat. The charcoal block is there because I melt small piece of scrap on top of that on Do they form? Nice of my balls has, I mean used to decorate my projects when I need to pick up my work or to support it whilst I'm soldering? I used reverse action tweezers that you can see here, and I've also got a pair on a stand through 1/3 hand, and it's there when I need 12 on extra hands to help me out. The blue handled stick is a soldier pick on and that I used to push soldier move it about to make sure it it's exactly where I want it to be. Soldier usually comes in strips or sticks. Andi, I've got three different melting temperatures here that I use in combination for different projects. The soldier gets cut into small pieces or Palin's you ting. The red handles snips as I keep those little pieces in the labeled boxes that you can see do. Make sure that you label your boxes because once a soldier is cut up, you won't be hard to tell which is which. Melting temperature. My curl over the ends off the sticks of solder start. I can't tell which melting temperature they are. The more cold over they are, they're higher. The mountain temperature, bright yellow liquid is a flux. Solder won't actually flow out through the joining unless you use of flux with it. Andi, the paintbrushes. What I used to apply the flux to the joints in my work. Small projects like hearings only need a small blowtorch, and I've got two different makes of those here. Both of them are easy to refill with the gas that comes in aerosol cans. Since the same type of gas, butane gas that you use to refill cigarette lighter, bigger projects such as Bangles and our dependence, you're going to need a bigger torch. Otherwise, you're not going to be able to get the metal up to the soldier in temperature that you need showing the big torch on this small torch next to each other. For comparison, you can buy specialist jewelers tortures with separate gas canisters. But for beginners, a D. I. Y plumber's torch is using more affordable on dfars more easily found Justin. Anything I Y store do. Make sure, though, that you get yourself igniting torch. It's a lot safer. The torch itself is the black section with the handle and the red ignition button that screwed onto the gas canister. Once gas canisters empty and you will be able to tell because your flame will start to get very graceful. Then it's time to screw in a new gas canister. And in some areas you can recycle the old ones at the back of a picture. You can see a slow cooker that Scots a very mild acid solution. Good safety pickle in it. When you heat silver up, the surface becomes not darker and dirtier looking that some of the capo in the study silver reacting with the heat and auction flame to four cause copper oxides on the safety pickle cleans that copper oxides up. Before you put your work in the safety pickle, it needs to be cooled down or quenched in a pot of water. Andi, you need to put your work in and out of the safety pickle with brass or plastic tweezers. Not the stainless steel ones that I showed you before and last, but definitely not least our home safety glasses. You've only got one pair of eyes. Look after them carefully.
5. Dotty Box Earrings - preparing the materials: I got my strip over silver here says. I said It's just over a 0.5 millimeters thickness of the moment and we'll see how much it turns out that, um, when it's being rolled through, I'm going to use our links off on my person so they use anything. You just scared. Elise. I've used even just lovely pattern just from paper. Honorable couple classes on that, seeking to see what that's that's looks like what that's all about. Um, I've also got some very beautiful presence created from off cuts off blinds. The blind was too long for my windows are too white my windows. So I I cut it short. I saved the offer cut because that was a breach, a beautiful texture as well. But actually is one of my own texture sheets, because I haven't got a pair of earrings with this large Dottie patterns yet, so I thought I'd I'd use that. I've also got a another piece of the card as well, because I don't recommend sending through anything singer than about 0.8. That's about 20 gauge sheet through the rolling mill to be textures because anything center than that you haven't really got enough material to be pushed into whatever pattern you are using. So I recommend that for getting the best pattern from still a sheet. You putt had it out a little bit. Now I've got it. I got quite a bit of this card. I've got enough cutting this car. That's long enough. You can see it's gonna cover the whole thing. My Peter pattern is longer than my piece of sheet because the sheet is structured orbits. I sent it to the rolling Mill. Andi. The piece of card is the same length, more or less, so it's gonna cover the silver and the bit where it stretched out as well. Um, you don't have to use card. You can use a nice thick player or 40 colored paper. You can use a a couple of layers off kitchen towel Paper town. If you want on, that, will help to pad it out. So all you're doing is providing something else on the other side of silver that's going to help the rollers push the silver into the pattern. Here on what you'll find is that 70 on a nice seat. Crouching like this, you'll see some of the pattern coming through on the other side as well, together with a hint off the texture from this. So whatever you choose to point out, remember, it needs to be hardly texture tour with smooth as he can. Really, because you don't want that to essentially affect the other side, such something to bear in mind. I've just turned that over because I don't know, if you can see is I believe that about the light. There are a few hammer marks there again where students of use of it of the silver, just a practice, a texture. If that doesn't go. As I rolled the patterns through that Cincinnati and disappear completely, then I'll just start at this end for cutting my circles out for the earrings of used up there. So quite a few of my classes go through how to set a rolling mill up before a, uh, putting a pattern or texture in, but it's always worth going through again on it's also are saying to you again that when you get a rolling, But when you get a rolling mill, please do take the time to experiment with it on DTI to even draw a table in a notebook to say Right, it's that I've tried this sickness of metal, this wits of metal with this particular Hatton, this particular type of texture on. But this is a setting I need. So do a little bit of experimentation. Find out the best aesthetic on, make a note of it and do remember that the wider the piece of material that you are sending through, the more pressure is needed because the pressure it's spread out, shared out across the waste. So So I'm going to do to set this up is put that between the rows, Tighten it back down again. I tightened it really quite tightly, So I cannot. I'm really pulling on this. I can't pull it articulate about. So for my top here by my will is a gauge. So that's number 17 on my gauge. If yours hasn't got engaged, I need to put her stick her on the coke. That would be up here, or a piece of masking tape. Sharpie mark on it. Just put something to indicate that that's going to be so now I'm going to loosen the wheel to bring that back out again. silver, By the way, has bean previously kneeled and that is important to do. So I take it back down to the 17 subsidy in kneeling softens, and I forget statistically the better chance of getting a really nice texture this ancient back down to 17. I'm just gonna give it another about half a turn on. That is a good, um, a good starting point because my piece of sheet is really long and it's much longer than I need. I can actually use practice sheet just for a little bit of testing. If you're piece of shit, you know isn't exactly right. Then do the testing with copper on my movements, the silver. So I've got a little bit here as I get away with. So I'm saying it's really nice and straight not strangle because I want it. So you have to be a nice straight as possible piece off silver feet. I said it was a little bit of effort needed. Not very much. I've got gears of my money, man, which does help now. What I can do on this, I've noticed with my texture sheets is I can hold it all nice and steady on, just lift back on and all right, yes, I can see the start of that roughly texture coming through. So by holding up things, studying to setting that to go back, everything is still in the right place. But even if that little bit has shifted that if orbiters, where those hammer marks were so so so I could sacrifice a little bit, which it back in this crackpot views for something else, H one. So it's all the way through now. Look at that really lovely texture in the That's beautiful on and that piece of texture sheet. So I run my finger nail over the area that has been rolled through. There's actually still enough hatton in there to get a least one more. Maybe two more impressions into the silver. Um, might need to be set tighter settings to be out creative. That's that can be used more than once. So that is the Peter sheet repaired. I'm going to show you preparing recycling that piece of over wire into long strips of rectangular weir. Have any of the short lengths off over what I showed you earlier, so it's now softer so that the rollers are going to be able to have a good action on it. I am expecting to need to Aneel it again a t least once during the process on I'm aiming to turn this four center me to length into about 16 centimeters. I think that would give me to re nice circles from the frames of the sites off my boxes, the earrings. But we'll see how much we get from this. She's really amazing how much you can stretch this out, too. So let's go. What I'm going to do is open up the rollers and and just some until that's the stage where the y can can't you can only just not fit through. What I'm going to do is Sonthi Peter wife, who wants then send it through straight so section it stays as straight as possible, cause natural make, making the walls of the box a lot easier. Send it through once and then going to flip it over completely to send it through another time, second time on the same setting, and I find personally that that helps to keep the wire as straight as possible so that it doesn't start to bend one way or the other chain much so usually the first row through may be the first to rolls. Don't do that much of your skin getting the the setting right on the rolling mill, you can see that didn't really do much a tour might get to see as I moved about my sets that are lighter. Patch down the middle. I'm not very much a tall on. That's where the rollers have caught the wire. So flip that over sense. Three Straight again. Tighten up the rollers. I tend to tighten up. The role was about 1/4 turn. I find that that's good. It's far better to take this study that's already had a bit more oven impact on it. Shine your flatter surface. His farm. Better state this city. Do they, mister time Get into a nice rhythm? Is you doing it? Martin. Trying to do too much that same time, don't you? Much at one time, mother. I'm trying to catch it at the other side of it comes out that I know which way it went through so I can flip it over without becoming. It'll be easier as it's longer. Well, I think that ship back here. We have them, right? Christ, The rollers, I think. Type it up, port. I'm not gonna make you what short of this? Because I think you're getting the idea where you should be able to get the idea that you should see that he is already a lot flats up on. And to use the official Canopus, just make sure they are zero. It was 2.5 millimeters. It's now 1.8. So that's really seemed quite a bit. And it was about four centimeters long on it is now nearly five centimeters long. So standard rule is that every time you half the sickness or double the length you need to a Neil. So do keep an eye on the the links of Satan. Solve it. But to be honest, go by the feel as well. If you only turn to court return and all of a sudden it feels a lot tougher to roll the wire through or you feel you're not making any impact on it, that is the point at which you need to kneel. So I'm going to keep doing this hospital film up so you don't have to watch or some ocean. Andi, I will come back to you when it is done saying We have got a nice long lengths of rectangular Weir Um, instead of a piece of over wire on. But I am expecting to need to a Neil this at least once. Mama Que wasn't prepared. I've got peace. Rectangular Weir rolled out from that over. It's quite amazing that over was now this long. This is a just over 0.45 millimeters in thickness. It's about 0.46 Um, Andi. That means that for have hearings like this, this is a great sickness. Once it's sold into a round shape and it's got top on bottom of the box put in place, it's going to be strong enough. If it was a large dependent, then you need a thicker war of a sudden the material section, maybe actual about 2.8 millimeters with 20 days of sickness. Andi, that lovely textured peace that come out really nice scene at large. Dottie Texture feels really nice as well, and on the back you can see the Texas comes to a little bit back a reverse as well, because of the paper pushing it in from the outside, a piece of hard pushing it in from the other side ticket. If you wanted to use that other side as well that that's really quite nice. So those materials prepared. I now need to cut discs for the top and bottom on prepare rings from the rectangle wire to be the sites of the boxes.
6. Dotty Box Earrings - preparing the box walls: myself. Now, Andi, I The next job I'm going to do is turn this rectangular piece of wire into two rings essentially, that are going to form the walls off the box, two boxes for two earrings, and I'm going to form those in the same way that you would for a ring or for a metal setting for a capture on stone. So I'm going to cut two lengths off this changing piece of why I'm going to file the ends to make sure they completely square spent the trainer y round. So those ends meet, re nice and tightly and then solder the joint closed, um, off. That really was tiding up on forming them into nice, neat circles on those circles are then going to have a top and bottom off this soldered onto there on the return. My chosen circles is that it means I can concentrate on the technique of forming the box rather than technique for me, hold its shape. I'll inform in the box. So because I'm using circles I've been then use my disk Attar, Andi, the discussions of it. It's the first time I used my new dust and discuss utter in a, uh, uh, video class. That's its debut. Um, Andi, three cutters that come with this well got 16 millimeters and 13 millimeters more sizes. But the site is that would be suitable for this are 16 or 13. Um, the 16 millimeter is a French and too big for this overhang. CIA justice. A teeny tiny bit where 13 fits on the really nicely. But I'd actually like to make bigger earrings in the 13. In fact, the 13 if I use the 13 disk, it would make a bit smaller. Explain that. Why that in a moment where that is, um, I think I want to make a little bit larger but more a statement piece and show off this beautiful texture a little bit more. So it doesn't actually matter that the 16 millimeter disc cutter the punch sits slightly over the edges of this because I actually want to cut out discs that are a little bit bigger, Then the outside diameter off this, the rain that's going before from this on. The reason for that is that I want to get a really nice flush finish around the edge of the box. I found The best way to do that is to have top and bottom of the box bigger than is actually needed on and file them for lush to the water, the box when everything this actually soldered together. So I'm going to make the rings with an inside diameter off 14 millimeters now so diameter for there is a little bit of us and I will show it to you at the end if I multiply that 14 millimeters by pie that takes me from the diameter to the inside circumference. If you haven't got pie on your calculator or the cancellation your phone most do have it nowadays with just in case, there is so using the never ending number you can just use, which is multiplied by 3.14 Well, if I do that, I get a measure of 43.96 millimeters. However, I went to compensate for the thickness of this. So just like with the ring, I'm going to be adding twice the thickness of this rectory in your wire about point for five, twice such his 50.9. So I'm ending up will show you these calculations written down at the end. I'm promise. So I'm going to be ending up with 44.86 Check him on us. Just 44.86 I defy anyone to cut two point millimeter. So I'm going to be cutting off two pieces of 45 millimeters long of this strip. Find the inches I understand. Continued to work to make the to make walls so I don't touch. You need the discusses. I just got off stump at the moment. Show off my new discussion to you in a moment. But what I do off a C needs is Rita Shalke, Engineer Square. I've also got a pair of snakes. Are these the same steps I used to cut my pieces off? Soldiers, shirt soldier Why and the reason why I'm using these instead? Off cutting through with You're so yes, it's good. It's so saying, Well, I can do it. That's what makes us so. Obviously, where I have wrote to the rolling mill, the ends always end up around it. Just just what happens you can do to stop it. It's just what happens. So I'm actually going to do First of all is you see engineer square toe. Hold it alone straight on. Just use a Sharpie because straight line there, Well, im just are gunning for the end. So cutting a cross section where it really is nice and straight along that that might change in the wire. I hope it goes in the apron to be rescued later. There's snips. Do put a tiny bit of cove at the ends there, but will sort those out later. By the way, plenty of room. Um, when I bought this out, the rolling mill for it serves filed stage. There was a tiny bit of a curvature to the wire. So what I did was send it through a couple of times more, flipping it over each time so that, uh, the same setting on that helped to straighten it out. So 45 millimeters is what's needed. Learning everything up nicely. Well, it depends starts to run out that point. There we go. I prefer to cut one off market and cut again, just in case you silly political bits with the coaches, you go off the mark a little bit, accidentally mark to lead off the pain. It's dried out a bit. Our school without a piece of paper to get back in the moment. Rights is enough. Still, for me to see it so doesn't look much, but those pieces off but changed her. Why that we're going to form the walls off the boxes will be moved the camera so you can see better how I'm going to file the ends Square first I'm going to do. Remember I said that the ends curl, little bitch. My use snips stands. I got here. Six. It's really easy to sort out just for the night on your player. Just give them a bit of a squash and that sorts out problem that's in just well, both ends on this. And then once that's done, you could fall across the ends now because I tried to cut off as, um, neatly as possible, uses the steps going across wide need is possible. I took time to use the engineers Square. She that one. It doesn't eat anything that's really nicely done. Using the engineer square holding a side of the rectangular wire up against the side. The handle here taking tops the chart. I'm just see if there's any daylight coming through A tall because sometimes, even if you have cut across really nicely, there's still a little bit. There wasn't a thing on that. So that was perfect, this one tying a little bit born the wrong easier that title bit, which is made your chances just show you how I'm going to find it myself. Square. So this is same so far, making ring or bangle or a battle to go around, um, Capital Stone. I hold whatever it is I'm filing at right angles across bench Paige, a little bit of it sticking out on. And then if I hold my file parallel to the nge, the inch, the bench pack here, I'm going to finding at the right angle to make this nice and square at the end. Andi, I don't need to take off very much a tool. So just four strokes like that. Just checking again. That's done it. I don't need to be very much a tool, so when she's any time, but it really is worth, um, doing just a little bit. And she can just stay quite gently. Yes, that's good as well. So I think I need to do is bend thes round so that the ends meet head on. Now, this is a little bit springy because I haven't had kneeled it since sending it through the rolling mill. But actually, I think that's a good thing, because with the, uh, chamber, why this thin? If it was a complete new kneeled for its very soft, there would not be enough tension in the wire to be able to hold it nice and steady once I got it in shape. So although the fact that it's not a Nield is making it a little bit more difficult to shape, it's actually going to be advantage when I soldier close because I'm going to stay in position se just using a combination off my fingers on the nine on your pliers just to get that lined up. So that's now it a very rough capital D shape, um, with the sea and screeching nice and straight and head on along that flat site is one. Smoothing those ends broken force a little bit to get from the lined up who's spring a little bit. Okay, somehow pure that one as well. I will double check some before I sold to them because it's not is that young heard off for Have everything lined up perfectly Here you put more soldering brick on everything moves So as I always say, it is worth taking your time setting up for soldering. But soldering is what we're going to do next.
7. Dotty Box Earrings - soldering the box walls: so joins us still nice on the subject. Checked? Um, that said, it's always worth. They're worth checking source joints before you actually turn the torch on and start melting the soldier, but they're looking really nice on did in this project. Trash going to need to use all three melting temperatures of solder. They're going to use Hard Soldier, the one with the highest melting temperature to solder thes joint post medium to solder the top on the boxes. Onda actually saw the ear wire in face. Do that at the same time we're going to use heart soldier to soldier those joints closed medium soldier to solder the tops on the boxes or the bottoms might be Andi then was solder the other side, the boxes on onto the ear waas in place at the same time with easy solder. So how soldier to do those? Andi, I'm not going to use unusually for me a mixture off Italians to do this and then sort of place to do next two stages of explain why I'm gonna switch the sort of paste in a while. Sort of place is very useful for different jobs, but the Italians are definitely cheaper se different branches and just getting nice. Big drop of flux to approach. All right, join and then scrape off the excess off the top of the bottle was just out of view Over here. She could just see the court here. Eso that my paintbrushes just damp. That is the way that I prefer to pick up piece of soda. Andi. I prefer to have the pieces. A soldier on the inside remember, solder flows through the hottest part off your work, so so I didn't want to be picked up. So I'm going to heat up the whole. He's silver once the time on when everything's at the right temperature, which will be shown partly by the parents of flux. Becoming look a bit dark and glossy, a hint of red in the silver as well, and I'm going to make the hot the partly outside. The front of the hottest part on that was secured the soldier through from the inside to the outside. However, if the so you re doesn't want to play ball and doesn't want to stay on the inside, held there by the wet, that wet flux than what you can do is put the pizza solder flat on the brick on the joint on top of it. And then what you have to do is draw the soldier up, joined by making the top hot spot. Throw it up. Those are nice. Just checking the soldier is my seat positions outside. I just can't take one time and do this more first brush across the front. They always do to dry off these the flux, right? Slowly. Because if it dries up too quickly, you can bubble up. Andi, pop the Italians off, which I prefer not to do without taking the time to put them in place. Okay, Staging place might get for white powder forming there. That white appearance is a droid blocks looks like. See, that means I can go round looking to read something. Brush across. There we go. That's for not sold through. Doing that sort soon, nicely as the silver cools down a bit more democratisation for me and see the brighter patches, soldier. Then I say so. I see. If I do seem to single Yeah, it's done this on purpose. Second demonstrated to you a piece of soldiers did pop off so That means I can just in that case, demonstrate the other way to you. So I've left the Peter soldier where it popped off on. I put the wall on top of it with the joint directly on top of the soldier, So try again. So I brought something along the way around my ring nicely because I had the flame at the topic. Drew's what he said, flashing the bottle the way out that join up. Beautiful, right? Those need to be quenched on, cleaned up in pickle on, and the next stage will be actually forming them into rings the moment they look rather misshapen and dirty.
8. Dotty Box Earrings - shaping and filing the box walls: to nice, clean piece of silver. Nice. He sold it closed his fresh as typical, but they're certainly not around shaped with you for the earrings, so I'm going to use small round trip it. This is smaller than the attributes I use for rings. Sees wouldn't fit on the ring. 11 month study were not with the shape on denial Hammer to having them around, so it seen us before. I expect another video class stuck down. It's gonna put the piece of silver onto the triplet and then use Come on hammering down. That was in the knowledge It it's hammering towards attributed and see already it's becoming around it. Well, as it becomes rounded or C comes down, the triple it shake I was going to do in shape their reading and round nice and smooth is I'm going to tuck just out the question, making a bit of a different noise. Knock somebody me up against the bench. Andi, I got it. Snubbing hits the bottom here and take it off. Turn it over. Put it back to him. Make it snow against abortion again. So what I've done is compensate basically for the Taper in the triple it. If I made the top and bottom snugged up against the trip, it as it's sitting on the moment my pizza silver would take on the taper off the triplets. So by turning it up and down and just toughing it really nice, smooth up against the bottom have compensated for that. So instead of being swash, it started. He's not circular. Somebody do that again. I think. What you sort of look down like that to see if it is nice is secular Second best of circling a good chap. The homage of stone abortion. Did you miss that section? Okay. No, no, No shaped. However. Well, im doing the next section of filing. I might have to after that rechecked them again because they are quite thing wall second to former strong enough piece of jewelry. But they are quite thin. Andi, that's going to mean that, as I filed them to that said I might squash a little bit, so I will put them back on the triplet after I find with, um just a makeup see certain that they are the shape that I want and also to make sure you could make sure now, stacking them on top of each, just stocking up on top of each other than feeling across them with my fingers. That helps me to see my my fingers sensitiveness feel weather. There was a difference in the size where there isn't, which is good. I was hoping I wouldn't. They added a careful measuring to make sure that they were both started with same length of rectangular weir. But it is always worth a double checking now if the's were rings or if they were better settings than I would have to file the inside of them using a curve well rounded file to get rid of the excess solder soldier join. See this? Not too much, but it's a little bit, but I'm not going to do that. And the reason why I'm not going to do that is that you are not going to be able to see the inside at all. It's going to be covered top to bottom with lives either site, so I'm not going to see the inside, so I'm not going to actually worry about cleaning up on the inside. However, I'm also not going to at this stage cleanup. The outside of the joints on The reason for that is it, as I file the leads, the top and bottom off the boxes. If I filed them flats and flush up against the wall, I'm actually also do a bit of filing on the wall itself. It's inevitable. We can't avoid that on as I'm not a fun of doing the same job twice. I don't see the point in tidying up. The soldier joins by filing now when I'm going to be finding that area again as I finish off the earrings after the whole being soldered together. So I'm not going to war about soldering inside. It's not going to see it were outside. So do it nature. But I do, however, need to file top and bottom of these pieces of silver. There's two reasons why I need to do that. First of all, as if you've watched in the best of setting, workshops were seen or a ring workshop. You're seeing that there is always a little bit of a step at the soldier. Join. You can never lie. It absolutely, perfectly thes aren't bad, but my finger now is catching a little bit top on bottom or on this one than the other one . I think eso I need to final top and bottom to get rid of that. But the other thing is specifically to do with the wireless I use because thes pieces of wire were formed from rolling over wire through the rolling mill. The ends of the wire, this remains of it here. Aren't you a little bit color? They're not completely flush. They are a little bit curve because off the shake of wire that they were formed for. So I need to file talking about in just a little bit to get rid of that curvature as well. So I'm going to use my flat, six inch file. Do. This is a cut to a medium cut on, and the circles just about fit on the wits, which is rather useful because what I need to do it just place some of the file control with them down. It sounds quite a lot to me. And you went south quite a gentle noise because I don't need to put a massive amount of pressure on here. I didn't see maybe is the lightest catching nicely on the ages there. More so than where I haven't filed touring the edges on this side. It doesn't need a great deal of pressure. The founder, Sergio before you the file. Only once in one direction, with silver moving towards the handle. So I need to move the file, or I could move the silver. Doesn't matter which I movil can groups. If you want to read both. Dropping these on the floor to test the socially is optional. Um, check your shape. I've done that and hasn't does it. Um, but it does mean this Aiken, on this case, just hold the phone like this and just George towards the handle. And every time I take it by cuts the top, I'm turning the circle just a little bit. So I'm never far. I'm not filing in the same place each time. Find that this helps to keep everything as nice unlevel and even as possible. So that one is done. It's do the other side, the joyous, and I still flush and I can see that I removed that curve like him. That was nice. So number two, it was fine. Last sight. When then that's chopped. It's done it's a bit more needed. That's still fine. So it's nice. So those are almost prepared of ice. So let's say so. I'm just going to put them back on the triplet and just make certain. But they, uh, in shapes that cater, putting back on triplet, tapping on the bottom age, turning it over, repeating just to make absolutely certain thank you, oh, in shape. By the way, if one of these was noticeably bigger than the other than what I do is hammer the smaller one down the tributes a little bit to stretch it out, being careful again to turn it around. So it the other way up and do the same again to avoid the type of. But they are if they said they checked the same size. So those are the walls. They are now ready to have one side, one lead soldered in place.
9. Dotty Box Earrings - cutting the discs: it's time to cut the discs out of this strip of textured sheet now that are going to form the top and bottom of the boxes for the earrings on. As we've said, it's going to be using 16 millimeter diameter punches goes in this hole here. And so this is a debut video of For my new Dustin this cutter. I still love my pay one, but for a commission, I needed Cem different sizes of disks, um, that the Justin could provide my pipe A didn't have. So I treated myself basically. But it's the same. Lovely quality is the pay with punches at a slow pings, and they're not trying to cut out the whole just at the same time. They started one point spread around really nice, crisp etches as well. Andi, the last point makes it sexual Equality is such the two hops of the cutter sandwich nicely neatly up against the sheets, so she's a move. However, it doesn't just use gravity as the pep a one does. You've got winky toe, open it up on you, satin. But in that the his season little hammer marks are still there. It doesn't really matter because that if I use that, it would be the back of the sheet. But oh, I'm not use that. So same as always, Some of the happy before we look down the hole. Obviously, my, um, my punch is going to go over the side a little bit talked about before, but I still want to make sure it's fairly even along here to want it skewed across. So getter get far too much after. Even here, I want you. So with everything, I'm going to do this. Dustin. Also provide some shims, some pieces off metal that you put in the opposite side to your sheet to balance out the top half of discusses. So it's not sitting monkey, and it makes it a lot easier to cut through a lot. My son punches and yeah around. Better for your tour. Basically, put that in the other. Enge on Bond Going twice in that down that specialize just looking down home. That's tighter. The other things I think most just casters come with nowadays. Remember, my other set his about 13 years old now, So things have changed a bit since then is that they come with some lubricant. Just see spend your change. Just help Soak after tools that goes in that space. It's after so much pain. But though I know how you got it sitting, another cushion come for the match that absorbs the shock. There we go. There's one not quite disk, so I'm going to do same three times more to you can push that interpretive scrap outs as well. Actually, proof this is really good quality is how close, um, together the this can be cut se number three. Don't reduce operative lubrication again. Okay, that every guy that was scrap out? Yes, well, shame out as well and see the shims that we painted painted black. They do get marks, all of them. But that's what the ages of the Because it's something you can do about that. So thistle comes. It's a lovely stand as well, but you do need to tighten it up fully to go back in its stand standing here. This is very heavy, but it's on the lam, Okay, like so ceased nowhere in particular to put shims. I can't touch them down the lubricant. Let's discuss this nicely. Kept together, I'm not you, but the important thing is that I have the tops and bottoms. Okay, tops and bottoms off my boxes.
10. Dotty Box Earrings - soldering the box front: third time to soldiers the first side onto the boxes. So I got the box walls, which I've double checked, are in the correct shape. Andi, I've got one pair off the texture disks. So But it is. I'm trying to show you the right angle. It is a tight fit that there is a little bit of a lip or the way round. So my job is to make sure that the wall doesn't go off the edge. Oh, uh, page of that. The disk. And in front, I think I'm going to turn both of the discs round. So you've got on both of them. One side is a little bit flatter, Member. I had to slightly go over the edge and on both of them, IRC cut more towards one side the strip than the other. So got the flatter side of the largest section of that flat side facing towards May. Just to make sure that I'm not going over the edge of those. No, I alluded to the fact that you can use eso Italians, or you solder paste for this. So I'm going to use our companions for one and sort of paste for the other Seagate to see both. That set up the soldier Palin's first, The more traditional solid soldier So much going to take that went off on and generously paints and flux across that and then use my dumb paintbrush to pick up some pieces off. Meet Him Soldier Abuse were using medium because used heart to trouble getting use off the brush Hard to soldier The wars together would be enough the rest back in the books on that least easy to both sort of the year One place under solder the the other side of the box song So I've put the solder on and the flux own. So now till venture do is position the wall back in place and then use my soul depicts to push the soldier up against the wall. So just if you've seen any off my stone set classes, stone set videos, you will see me do this, um, much the same thing with a better bull. I find it far easier so pusher with soldier in the middle and then spread them out around the outside when it's such a small but a war such as this one, I'm just gonna get more bitter. A soldier. I think my piece of soda are very small. Okay, so now gold peace. So we should be able to see even its based around the outside. I've got six very, very small pieces of soldier member. I send my stripper soldier through the rolling mill to thin it out and then constant companions. They do end up very small, which is how I prefer to work. I'm just looking round to make sure that the wall is away from the edges, that I got a little bit of silver showing around some, happy with how that's positioned the place itself, the Palins solder paste. But the medium solder paste here on something to do is if, you know, there was a catch hat on that how one of my cuts has has money should get from home onto the end of the soldier paste. I really like that and just okay. I see so based around the edge that were around the edge and then my composition at all and again just double checking. It's it's away from the edge we get. So those both of those are set up on because I filed top and bottom of the war. There really, really nice and flush. It's doing its They're doing obey breast job to get a really nice soldier joint. So he's a very small pieces, so I'm just going to use the small talk. Shall we do this one first? Now, remember, Sold apace. You may have heard me say before. Doesn't like being heated up too quickly. Isn't like the Houston flame being put on it directly to quickly? If you ever have your soldier paste Chris pop into a darker, harder substance, that's what's happened. You've tried to heat it up too quickly. I found it so much, prefers to get its heat almost indirectly through the silver, so I'm going to heat up around. First of all, I'm just going to move is a little bit further away because, as I um, he's in this one. I don't want to be affecting that one of getting a soldier Palance jumping about all over the place so I will heat up around around that's operating across your turn it round around and back and forth across it here as exactly same as if I was solving a suitable to smoke Or maybe it was a flame in a moment, coming from the soldier places normal. That's find a burning off. I smoke, but might just be able to see on camera. Looks like that. Why, That is innumerable who Wait 10 as solder flows. I'm going to, as usual, make where I want the soldier to flow to the hottest part. So I'm gonna make me outside the hottest part. So this visit tonight and also selling outside the bottle it over with the flux signs that things were about to get moving. There we go. Nice lying of soldier appearing on the outside. A soldier here. Good, replete there. That is nice. I soldier all the way around the outside, and I can see on the inside as well so much and put some more fuel in the torch. Um, before I go into the next one like I want you, - I could check the torch before on my I started working. I thought having a fuel was he not so talked up. Now, Andi, the flux science will see the flats is still wet on this one. It has such dry off a little bitter, so that heat has traveled through the rituals, this one. But with this one isn't much the same action, but for something different reasons. This sometime, heating around the outside, heating quite gently. So the flux drives off quite gently again, Remember said, It's hopefully, Italians do not jump about this time. The Texas. I'm looking out for our from becoming a white powder show. This it's dried nicely. Can be quite subtle that bit depending on how much you actually use. I see a little bit that tells me that it's about right so they don't move out position like you bet on spot. Apart from that one who wants to a flying jump? That's better. Just a second. So withdrawing. Okay, you see some white power around the outside now. So now I'm going to do Russia with the way apartment. Maybe you've got to get everything. It's the right tip picture. So getting everything watch. So again, with the other one going around the outside, brushing across this is a bit quicker because, uh, flavors bigger. Same again. I'm going to close. It started to play. There we go. Once the flame on the outside. I love you. So, uh, That's great. That is really, really quite amazing. How different they end up looking depending on the difference type of soldier. This one has darker patches on it. Compared to this one, I'm so those are both really nicely soldered. Next stage is that they need to be quenched ongoing pick up.
11. Dotty Box Earrings - preparing the earwires: both of the earrings, soldiered it beautifully, and I can see a line of solder around the inside of beach. This is the one that had the Palley in sickness and actually see the some of the dark marks welcome outside by the Palins in there. But I'm not worried about that system could be seen. And even if it was by the time it was published up you and got to see those Andi around the outside of each as well because he that nice lying of soldiers, they had sold it really nicely. If they hadn't then very gaps, then I would have reapplied fact companions in the space that was needed on this one. A little bit more paste on this one. Unjust, heated again amounts the soldier and made up see certain that I made that area where there was a gap, the hottest to draw the soldier through. But you need to do that because it's so nicely. Now as I've been moving around, you may have no chest in that one that I put a dot on each war because what I want to do now is you probably guess from the facts that I've got my bench, Jill out is that I want to drill a hole through the wall of each other. Reason I want to do that is that I'm going to thread the ear wires through them now. I could soda and a Y two one side of the hearing, but that wouldn't really give the nicest finish. I could also sold out and hear why just to the top of the wall and give a nice of finished . But it wouldn't be as strong soldier going. It might stop off eventually because there waas do get moved about Andi because it's a bigger peace compared to the ear, while that actually could happen. So what I'm going to do instead is create to headphones. Essentially, in a moment I'm going to melt the ends metal balls on the end of two lengths of no 20.8 millimeter wire. I'm going to threat those head pins through each hole from the inside. So the head compartment of a board it's insanely insight on the wire is going to come through on the outside. Andi, that's going to be sold in place when I solder your site on the box sort of the other laid on on DSO. It will be security and strongly in place. My bencher is perfect for this because I can hold the box very carefully. Do that, Katharine like that. I can line everything up, and I can just use the lever that's on the side here that you can't quite. I just up here can't quite see it of you. Liken to such just a guide and feed the drill bit through there. Andi, I'll be out to feel when it's that you go through the silver. I'm going to lift it up and stop it now. Doing this with a hand drill that requires two hands on the Joseph Lykken are comedians. Drill is a little bit more difficult, Um, and even do this with a boat room or Bodine drill, which is a lovely piece of work and some my earliest video classes. You'll see me using that lovely tool, but it becomes a little bit more difficult to use a hang still like that and hold the box steady because it's secular. Secular issue wants to roll. So if you don't have a bench field than what I suggest you do if you have to handle this is you hold this gently but firmly in a clump to make everything about more secure. I've got a no 0.9 millimeter drill bit in here. Andi, I'm going to be using no 0.8 millimeter. Why? As normal for my ear wire. So that's going to go through. Not my nine million whole nicely, Um, without leaving too much of a gap around the hole so I can solder it in place uniquely as well. So don't check. Got everything lined up on because I'm going to be drilling into a slight, curved surface. I am going to take it especially slowly so that the drill bit doesn't slip. Okay, that's stepped on one thing that I didn't tell your mom off, my friend. See, that was being noise. We heard it. One thing I should have checked is that the dotty pattern? I want to be aligned in the same way. So just realized. Yes, I had actually. No, that was better. That's good. I'm happy that I just want to check. I had put the second hole in place so that they would be lined his passions in singly e home Okay, By the way, I was not holding my finger inside the books. I was holding it steady, supporting it across like that, because off cedar, when your finger in place where the drill is going to go. So what do you like that? So that is the first stage preparing for the year wires. The the next bit I need to do over on the soldering table. A cut to 6.5 century toe links off no 0.8 millimeter wire, which is longer that I need for the actual either wires, some cells. I don't need any about that amount of links of the wire, the ear. What's that's probably more like five in half six. So, yeah, 5.5, I think. But because I'm melting balls at the end of each them, I need extra wire to form those balls. So that's why I've cut them off a little bit longer. No, with your hearing design, he might choose a different size box to make, so you might want to cut off longer to longer pieces of why that I have and then trim them down. If you need to ask their soldiers in places that we better to do that if you're not quite certain how long you want them to be, start them off a little bit longer and then trimmed them down. What I'm going to do is tell the torch on. For once, the torch is sending still her 100. Move a silver into the flame. You see, it's the other way around. What was going to do is hold each piece off wire, which you can't really see at the moment is Miss Me chicken about that, we just trust me to send the tweeters I've got holding it in a pair of first section tweezers. So I'm going to hold the wire in the flame just in front of the Blue Tick, which, remember, is the hottest part of flame. The end of the Why will melt and any metal attic melts wants to form a ball, so perform a little ball on the end. When they do that with both, I don't need, um, the always to be very big. I just leave them big enough to not go through that 0.9 millimeter hole. It's in the hottest part of plain to see the Blue Cove on the screen, I find I get best results by moving. So while rounding commission plane, so it doesn't need to be very much just acting. Stop. All right, good. I'm making sure my when my hand is not held This Sorry. Differ. Flame is exactly hot. I'm holding it this side defense. So there you couldn't see it. He was just just here. So it wasn't getting to What? So those two, um, a nice size Didn't worry too much. Hot one primal. Me I didn't want Didn't mind too much about it into to be exactly the same size because there no, no See them, Um, but to the bulls, just, uh I do need to Poppies in the quench brought on Hotman in typical to clean up because those dirty ends are going to be involved in soldering. I remember the soldier doesn't flow onto dirty work, so that is the stage. And then I'm going to show you the final bit of soldering
12. Dotty Box Earrings - soldering the box back: Okay, then these are all bits that we no need to finish off the earrings to ear wise to half boxes onto the other two lids on. The first thing to say is that I have threaded, but now clean. Hear why one of the Iwas through this? You can see where that stop her is preventing it from going through the air. Wick gay with way through the that whole you could if you wanted to just leave that loose and dangling. But I don't want the box to spin around too much, so on that she's going to soldier it in place. I'm just going to storage the other ones through. All right, guys. The other thing you should see is that I have put pen marks on or four those disks on the pain marks line up with where the wholeness and I'm going to use them to make sure that I lined the pattern up. So that's it's a hearing matches because this is a pattern. It's it's it's fairly on the direction of the It doesn't have to be precisely one way lined up. But if I had this, this one with dots running like that on this one with the dots wedding. My God. Then it would look a bit talk to. So this is just my way of making sure that I relied everything up nicely on Bond. I put those lines as well transferred from the front here. Why? I checked. Everything is lined up to the back. Now I'm going to be using easy solder paste to soldier these closed because it is so much easier than using the Palins for this stage. Essentially, I want to be able to put a little bit off soldier next to the ball on the pace will stick their nicely opinion. Might have to put a pie in their part, melt in place to get it to stay exactly there when I put a little so everything was in place. Likewise, I would have to carefully place the companions just inside the rim. Onda, That could be a little bit Well, it's been fought because they would be unlikely to stay where I wanted them to be. So what? I'm going to do this the easy soldier, because remember views, uh, meet him. She put war onto the outlet and I've used hard to solve the war close. This is easy, soldier Andi. Just like you saw me soldier one of these clothes before. Just putting some easy soldier pace around the inside. It's a war stays. I want to change. Andi, I'm now going to put this this way up on top of here, which is why I transferred the mark onto the back. The reason why I'm putting it down this way instead off having a chop this way is that it will be difficult for me to see the solder flowing out melting and flowing out. If it was up this way because I could see that room there I can't see the room up here by having it's up this way. Instead, you still with check it is in the right position. Check that in a moment by having it up this way. Instead, I can see where the soldier is mounting of flowing out around there. So it's a double check. I got us in the right place. She set this one up and I'll check them both the same time because I actually need to moved to Britain. So it's better for my view, while then the camera's view to be able to double check that. Why? I will move the back again with a soldier around the area, social around him. What's that? I see. Take, I'm happy as hell that one's lined up time to stop checking that. At no point is the war over hanging the edge of the disc. Just do the same to this one. Okay, Happy with that one as well. So as always, I'm going to take the earrings one at a time. From start with this one. We've launched this one. I do need to be careful of the ear wires. They are relatively small pieces of silver compared to the boxes themselves. So need to make sure don't put too much heat into them. I don't want to melt them. So I'm going to go round back and forth around like so around here, starting to get with silver heating up, um on. Then once I start seeing flow of the solder, remember, You see that with the paced the floor of the soldier starting to work its way up the war there are knows. It's starting to get breakfast serving temperature. At that point, I will, with my torch like so to get a sort of mountain flower on our probably or definitely will turn the hearing round of Alberta's well so I could just easily get to that side and see what's going on my own now as well. Now a safety point for you. When you solder a ho form like this, the air inside expands a little bit as you heat it up. Andi, you need to make sure that either you sold a very, very carefully and do this with a lot of experience. There are knowledge of signs you're looking out for, so you stop well before overheating and making soldier. Just don't take reserves amount. Soldier has mounted on flow. Basically, you stop so that the air expanding inside never does any damage. The soldiers seem because the air can escape through the holes as the soldier is mortar. But if you overheat it, then that's when it doesn't become so safe. However, I put a hole drilled with side. I know it's got so to paste knew it at the moment, and it's got a piece off this piece of wire poking suit as well. But that actually is for box of this size that she is enough of an escape hole. At the moment, However, if I did want to do more soldering to this box, I would have to. That's for solving. After this bit, I would have to drill at least one hole in the hearing to make sure that the air inside could escape. Otherwise, the air expanding could pop with Seen on Dutch would not be safe at all. So a little bit of a safety tip, remember, this is always best, much safest to put an escape hole for the air to come out off, so back and fourth round expecting a while. Just start seeing some smoke. Greenish flame. That's just the finder that's in place. So it starts off. Stop. There is the whole thing now, still much believing that year. Why starting to see it down there? You see, the flux is starting to remember. That's along with the British *** that's now appearing is a really good sign that we are extremely host. So temperatures expecting as I hate tough around the outside now to start seeing soldiers flowing Muybridge. Very good starting to see it come out here. - I just want more beatings if that's flowing out as smoothly was quick visit. Turn of I would have expected telling me this. I actually put a little bit more heat into the whole hearing 10 rounds as well. I went to the moment that you are still moving. I want you to so in place. Quite I that year. Why now soldiered into place. Get so I do want to do is move that out of the way so that it is not affected. In fact, what I'm going to do, Yes. Move this one very gently on here. Such a bright idea. So I only have it gently because I didn't want to move this until it cooled down a bit. So the reason I didn't want to move this antithetical down a bit is that the the contracting air inside? A couple of the fact that it was still too hot. If I were to squeeze us in the wrong place at this stage, then it would actually we could inform the box what I don't want to do. So I'm just gonna put that the way. If that was back and tidy, put this books back in position again check. It is a little bit hot because it was on that hot brick. I'm having to use the tools to line everything up again. That's good. It will be soldering this from no go round from the outside a little bit heating up home books before I want to see looks. This one looks so it's going a little bit quicker. That's partly because it had already heated up a little bit as it was sitting on bricks when I was so thin. The 1st 1 This one has actually got a far more obvious soldier joined flying around, maybe had a little bit more solder on this one than I did on the other one more generous with soldier. So now guys turned it around again, running around, making sure so has flown with the way through, making sure now soldiers alone here. Why that one did go a lot quicker. So this one, like the other you know why is now stable? It's not moving about. Second picked up. My whole thing was but locker a bit like a funny from now, um, so us with the other hearing, I'm going to let that air cool for a little bitch. Rather question. Quench too quickly. I find that gives her helps to keep it shaped. I don't want to call them too quickly, but once they've both gone, could they caught down by air? It'll rate and I grant quench pot. I need to clean them up. Andi then returned to finish hearing.
13. Dotty Box Earrings - finishing the boxes: before I finish off the ear wise. I think it's a bit tiding up around the outside off the boxes to remove the excess material from the top on the bottom on also at the same time. Remember that I'm going to be tightening up. The soldier joins, um, that So did the walls closed at the same time on so that I can shave this in a clearer way , have are actually already sorted out. One of the hearings all started to I've used the six inch flat file to sweep across the outside because of the this wits of the books have actually had to do both vying yet the excess on both the top and the bottom at the same time, and hopefully you can see now it's a nice and shiny on the outside of the file marks. So my next stage with this is I need to remove those far marks with first grades of every paper, but I've cleaned up all the way around the outside, sweeping across. Now the places where you do you have to be more careful. Obviously, we are close to the ear. Works don't want to damage the year were. So one thing I will say is that all of these files have one side. That is safety. It hasn't got any teeth on it. Uh, she note this side does for the teeth of it, but this side nice and smooth. So when I was filing the outside here, So having a file here find that side of the box I made sure that I had the smooth section of the file near the ear wire was a little bit of a gap. I didn't have it right up against it a little bit upset. If I file slipped, I wouldn't end up doing a so much damage to the ear. Y you can also done here very gently bend it out of the way was a very carefully. It's a nice, secure joining their because remember, you've got border silver inside, but you're spending it Has that where they orbit? Um, I can give you better access as well. Andi can see. Find it so to join. I was just about where my nail is on, and I can't. So I can tell where it won't because I know where it waas, but you can't see it around the outside now, So really has Bean nicely tied it up. I was gonna pop that one away. Concentrate on this one. Now, I'm gonna make you watch the whole of this because this is surprising of the probably the longest section of the class tidying up around the outside. But it is the type of thing that you could do quite nicely when you see maybe your favorite podcast to a with audio book. Um, that helps the time go quite quickly. Andi. I would also say that because you be holding the books in pain trip, which is the type of great that puts the most pressure on your hand. Do stop, move your fingers and stretch things out. As you do this, you need to. But on this bet, I started on this section. That's where the file whether year soldier joiners just about still see a tiny cup of martz at the soldier join. Remove that amount of light so so many to a little bit more work there. But I'm doing is sleeping around. Once you stopped what you get One section the wall's done stun when this is a little bit of a lighter patch. They're still second. That goes that bit stun. Don't over file it. But he has been out the wall when it's nice and smooth away across, shown by the fact that it's going shiny with the action. The file. Then move on. Sweep across the next section. So you're working your way around, folks, You Okay , so you see what a of section? There may be another 4/5 of the conference around. Now, if you can still cut your fingernail on the top or the bottom of the box, then you still do need to do a little bit of firing. So do you use that as a test to make sure you gone that far? Now just kind to show you do the section up here with avoiding that year. Why? So you hear taste takes a little bit slower because I don't want the file to slip. You can see him just working on one side of the box now, both from the same time. I just finished sorting out that. So join us. I'm here. The reason you're sweeping around iss that you want to keep the shape of the round. It was good now. - So you got to see now that I filed really nicely this top section, the bottom section there needs a little bit more doing to it. I can burn that you are very setting carefully to give me myself is what? Extra access there. So what I'm going to do is continue filing all the way around or speed that bit, huh? Um And then I will go into the Emory Piper Brexit, the Ewings now filed. Andi was a shining around the outside, but those shine that shine is from the far marks. So off a set, going to need to use the great of Emory pay purchase moved off here. Just swell. You can see this does produce a lot of dust to make sure that you do this over your your apron. Hundreds to bench, Paige. So you conflict. The Dustin pushing scrap part Now need to work through the four grade. So the three great memory papers I've got here 245 101,200 always start with the lowest number. That's the highest grit. Andi, the case flying around back in full. And you can quite quickly see the difference It's quite subtle on the camera, but I can see that he's looking, um, a smooth the final finish than that one already. Hey, I'm gonna go across like that that I don't bump into. You hear what I said back Bit like that. Okay, also, So I don't want these actions to be we very, very tight. Try a little bit shop, which they can be after you've filed around the edge like that. So I'm also going to hold the Emery paper 45 degrees to the top. Found will reach the bottom of the box. Just go around like so, gun taking care about your wife that makes everything a lot more comfortable. 500. So is that you're saying with that? That's coming up ready? And I see now I usually find if I don't a good job with the 240 I don't have to spend as along with the 500 even less time with the finest grade convention cornice. But I don't finest. And by this stage, you're actually starting to polish. Really? Should now be on to see a nice difference between the two. This is catching like more looking brighter. And this is looking a lot I certain smooth and also feels nicer on the corners as well. So you need to do the same to this one. Onda polish both earrings and I'll come back to you to show you how to shape here Waas.
14. Dotty Box Earrings - finishing the earwires: Theo hearings have polished up really nicely, Andi, although it doesn't make much of a difference, I've decided which I want, Um, which way round I want them to go. I think those going to be the front spot if I hold them together, if I hold the back together, help me keep track of them. You can see that because I made even though they started off. It's the same length of why, Because I made one board slightly bigger than the other. I didn't have to worry about being them. Exactly. Right Size are the same size as they could be hidden inside. One. Iran has ended up longer than the other, not unexpected, but I do need to do is just make sure they're lined up nice at the bottom on and snip off the access now. I did previously. Just make sure that both ear wise one nice and smooth and straight specials I had Bentham a little bit size filing. Um, it's why it's thin enough that you can do with your fingers. Um, but you can also use a pair of nine on your pliers if you prefer, so just look check. I have Yeah, right in that way around. So what I'm going to do is used to step Mandrell two shapes, first year wire and there's normally first year while goes quite quickly. And then the 2nd 1 you have to stop and start a little bit to make sure that it is a good much. So I'm going to about half way along the e y stopped. Yeah, help with that. So quit me. Hear why? Finishing just over halfway down the back of the box. How that looks. The balance of it was like the end of the year wide to be hidden behind the hearing. So this one start off with again about halfway along the ear y but part bend it this time. Hold him up against each other. This one, a 2nd 1 is a little bit longer still. So this which is to know. So it's just shorten it to put it back on the mandrell and just bend that front section down against the books again. And would you know, I think I've made sure, but she's short, great opportunity. She had to put it right. I put a charge again. I find I get best results by putting it back past where it needs to go. Why was that, Maribel, that you can do that with. So that's try again. Bend it round part way. Any tiny bit too long writes trying to ever do it this time. Teeny tiny bitch bending round that's better. And then fish just by pushing that back piece of wire around the Mandrell Jeffren shelf. So that's the shape. However, that bend there is not going to stay in place on its own needs to a little bit, too. Strengthen it, Andi. I'm going toe hammer it to strengthen. It is your seen in other fearing classes. So we went to is holds the section of wise. I went to hammer on the steel bench, broke but my clashing hammer. We're just homage that front sections. I'm moving about the light. You can see it's flattened a little bit on that reports a great deal of strength into their spend here. We'll see what she is saying to the 2nd 1 Okay, then how much ink? Two more things to do. I want to flick out the end of each ear wire. It gives it a much more finished professional look earned or so surprising of helps to make the earrings less likely to fall out because the earrings would actually have to change direction, to fall out to pass through the hole in your ear. So I'm going to do is just holding thief at nose pliers on the bottom section. The why I've got the why is nice and flush with the bottom section the bottom side off the pliers there and just break out a little bit. That's all that's needed. But by getting into the habit, holding the ear wise in the same way each time I am duck with earrings that match on the very last thing to do. It used a needle file turn eaten up. There's and the workers. They are actually quite scratchy at the moment. They were not to be comfortable going feel ISS that links of why that might catch off that 6.5 sent to meet. I think it was length of wires and stop being a good length for these. He waas is your fingers as much as your eyes to make sure that it is not nice and smooth. So lining that why when I see on the same to the 2nd 1 Jamie, I told you whether you had that plane to flying, though tonight. Today I know that far from so something airports down here in studio handy for people coming to visit them. So it's another lovely pair of earrings. Nice chunky look, tooth. Um, but they are still very light because that box is, ah, high form. So, again, this is a lovely way of getting that chunk here, look, But keeping your material costs to a minimum on keeping a weight to a minimum, So the earrings are still lovely and comfortable to wear.
15. Dotty Box Earrings - final thoughts: Well, that's one beautiful, simply shape, but nice and chunky. Pair of earrings ready to wear on. As you can see what materials left over, somebody attempted to make another pair. I may be. Give these a darker patina to highlight the texture a bit more the same basic design, but a site different. Look, because the color of silver I'm looking forward to seeing what you make with YouTube to make earrings with you shoes make dependent whether you choose to keep them around or whether you come up with other shapes instead. Because, as I said in the introduction, once you've mastered the techniques, you don't have to keep around. I just did that. So I concentrate on the soldering another techniques that we needed to do as usual. If you have any questions, please do ask them in the class discussion section on.
