1. Introduction: Hello. Welcome to my digital shading class. My name is Alexandra Ga'bor , and I'm a professional Art teacher, artist and illustrator. Since my childhood, my dream was to write and illustrate my own children's book. I'm the phase of perfecting my own digital illustration style and processes, so that I can get the best possible result. But as I'm a professional art teachers and just get the teacher in stymie to call and quiets down. Even in my own learning process, I'm constantly analyzing processes, techniques, artworks of other artists. I just love to share my discoveries with you guys. Throughout this class, you will learn how to approach shading into digital medium. Having this skill set will help you to create better illustrations and to keep up with the latest illustration plants that you can mostly see when you are scrolling through Instagram. You write in some digital illustration hashtags. Learning how to shade your illustrations properly with a variety of tools is crucial. This class is for anyone who exactly as early stage of his illustration journey and haven't already figured out is things for himself. But of course, if you are an established creator already, you can learn something new as well. We are going to be working in the iPad Pro and the procreate programs. It is recommended to have this supplies and to be familiar with the program at least on a beginner level. But if you are not, actually, you don't really need to worry. I'll be commenting on the process in detail and step-by-step. I will also add some comments here and there so that you can easily follow along. The techniques presented can be also used in other digital programs, for example, in Photoshop. You will need to adjust the steps to that program for yourself. By learning how to shade digitally, you will opens so many doors for yourself. Since I learned the strategies I'm going to present to you, I'm able to create better illustrations. They are not flat anymore. I learned to use colored on purpose. I realize the importance of texture and the possibilities that lie within combining color and texture together, I also found ways to hack my illustrations, when I need to adjust the light and the shadow after I'm done with illustration itself. Basically, you can use the skills you learn today in a huge variety of situations. We will explore the full process of shading in three different ways. We will take a look on all these free strategy separately and then combine them together in final artwork, that will be actually your project for this class today as well. First we will explore color and create a super simple illustration of a fox and discuss color choices for shading. Then we will focus on texture and we are going to illustrate a job. We're going to use a textured brush and unnatural color to create the shading. Last but not least, we are going to create a human character, a grandma, and use transparent layers to create a shading. In the final part, we are going to take a look in a little more complex project. We're going to combine all these free illustrations together, and use all three strategies and combination to create wonderful whimsical illustration. I will be providing you all this catches and working files so that you can have a reference. I will be providing you the brushes the color palette. All you need to do is to download them to your iPad and follow the step-by-step instructions. By the end of this class, you will have free little, illustrations that you've practiced on. One full illustration with sad mood and light that you can be really proud of. Of course, you will be practicing skills so that you can continue creating on trend illustrations. If you have any questions throughout a class, feel free to contact me. Use a discussion tab below to ask your questions and also don't forget to follow me here on Skillshare. Click the Follow button, so that you will be the first one to know when launching a new class. You can also follow me on social media and Instagram and Facebook and check out what I'm up to. Are you ready? Let's get into it.
2. Overview : Welcome. In this video, we are going to go through the digital shading strategies that I'm using so that we can explore them on their own, but we are going to combine all these together at the end in the final project. Let's just take a look on each of them. Let's at first talk about the color shading technique. What is the color shading technique about? It is about choosing a color for shading. It is about the color choices. It is originated in the traditional techniques. When you are painting with traditional media like watercolors or acrylics, you choose your colors and mix your paints to get colors for your shadows. This is exactly what we are doing in this strategy. We are immediately painting with a darker color or with a specific color for shadows when we are shading. This is an extremely stylized illustration, and I have only noted shadows here, but that doesn't matter. This applies to stylized shadings and illustrations and to full 3D renderings. Let me just show you this fox without this shading. So without this shading, that is just simple blogged in colors. But when I add this noted shadows, it becomes lively. Why is it important? Let me just turn off this layer again. You can see that this ear that it is behind the head, is blending into the main shape. But when I add a little bit of shadow, it is distinguished. This is why it might be important to create shadings in stylized illustrations as well. Let's continue to the texture. In the texture shading strategy, we are creating shadows with textures. It might be a little confusing, so what is the difference between the color and the texture shading when it comes to the process? Actually, the process is the same, but here we are not really choosing the colors for definite shadows, but more including shadows in the texturizing process. Let me just show you this jug without the shading. It is, again, a simple blogged in color. If you can see when I turn it on, I have textures, but not that definite shadows. I have shadow here below this top and here and here. I'm noting the shadows and it is more about the placement than color choices. Of course, these can go hand-in-hand. What I really use when I'm shading is that I combine these together. I mostly create a colored under painting for the definite shadows and then apply texture over it and I combine texture with the color to create a shading. You will see this in the final project, how I'm using these together hand-in-hand. Let's talk about the transparency. What is transparency doing with shading? Let's take a look on this grandma. Again, you can see that this is a darker version of this color but actually what I've done was not choosing a different color for the shadow, but I simply placed a transparent layer of black over it and it instantly affected the color below it. Let me just show you what I mean by this. Here is the grandma and when I turn off the shading layer, you can see that it is just simply again blogged in flat colors. When I turn on this transparent layer of black, because this is only that I'm turning off the main colors so you can see this is only a transparent layer. It is affecting the color below it. Let me just show you at this part. If I'm turning it off, it is pink. I turn it on, it becomes darker magenta. The white becomes a little bit gray. This is very good strategy when it comes to affecting color, so when I don't want to decide on every color for every shadow I have in my painting, I just place a transparent layer over it. It also helps me when I want to hide the illustrations that I already mentioned. Let me just show you one of my illustrations I already showed you in the intro video, and it is this whale. I just created a whole illustration in one color and what I did was to place a transparent layer of black to create this shading. Let me just turn it off. So this is simple illustration I've done and now I have this transparent layer and it is affecting every color in the illustration and it gives it a wonderful mood. We are going to apply this in the final illustration so that you will have this strategy in your skill set. Let's just get back here. I'm providing you this file so you can download it and check out what I was showing you. I also wanted to say that transparency also can go hand-in-hand with texture. I love to use textured brushes to create this transparent layers. I'm not sure how would transparency and color go hand-in-hand together because if I place a colored layer over it, I'm affecting these colors differently. This might go into the topic of digital light and not digital shading. These are the three strategies we're going to use in the next video because I don't want this video to be too long. I'm going to talk a little bit about shading and levels of shading, and how different levels of shading have their place in illustration.
3. About Shading: In this video, I'm going to talk to you about shading. I created the scale to demonstrate what I'm talking about. These are different levels, as you can see at this side, we have the stylized illustrations where we have only blogged in colors, no shadow or almost no shadow, and no detail. This illustration style is really trending right now, I will show you in a minute. On the other side of the scale we have the 3D rendering, where we have full realism, lots of white values, within an illustration, and a shape. We have cast shadows, highlights. Neither of the sites are right or wrong, they are just representing different aesthetics. My illustration style on this scale is somewhere here in between the noted shadows that are usually sharp, and a shadow with a little blending. What I love to do is to add a little blending to my shading to give it a little more realistic look, but I love to stay in this flat colored level. What I want to add is that at this level, we can do the shading in a sense that what we know about it but at this level, we really need to study how light, and shadow works. If you want to do it right, we need to improve our score skills. In this class we're staying at this level because we are not really going to talk about the light, and how it works on different surfaces but we are going to stay in the stylized level, and add some noted shadows with a little blending. Now I would love to show you some artists. I will start with some commercial illustrations that you already know, I'm sure. I have two kids, so I really know Peppa the Pig well. Let's just take a look on her. She has [inaudible] , she has blocked in colors, and absolutely no shadow, and detail. If you can see here is a little cast shadow below her which works just fine in this illustration style. Peppa the Pig on this scale is here. Now let's take a look on Toy Story. It is a fully freebie rendered illustration here. Everything has its form, every shape, every shadow, every light, and reflection is developed in detail. This illustration would stand in this part of this scale. Now let me show you non-commercial artists. These three artists are my favorites that I follow on Instagram. The first one is Andy J Pizza, I'm sure you know him. He is the creator of the amazing podcast Creative Pep Talk. Just check out the website, and I really recommend you to listen to the podcast. Let's just check out his work. In his work, he is not really adding shadows, he's using textures, and blogged in colors. Sometimes when he needs to add perspective, like for example, in this illustration, perspective in a sense that something is behind something. He just adds some little noted shadows. This is a great example of the perspective I was talking about. Where these textured letters meet, he adds little shadows, but on the figure actually, he just chosen some darker colors to know that something is behind something, but it is completely flat. He would stand in the scale, somewhere here. Now let's see something in the middle of the scale. She's one of my favorite illustrators. She's Izobova Katerina. I'm not sure if that's right, how I pronounce her name. Her illustrations are just wonderful. Just take a look on this, she's using a lot of textures. She's using color, and texture together to create the shadows. She has these sharp noted shadows as well. She just works with this masterfully. This is not 3D rendering, and not stylized, she stands somewhere in the middle of this range. Now let's take a look on the 3D rendering. This is Adrian Macho, he is from my home country, Slovakia and his artworks are just wonderful. Let's take a look on this man. He is fully rendered. I wouldn't say that it is full realism, but the shadows and the textures, everything is done with so much care and detail. His artworks are just beautiful. What I want to point out that every style on this scale has its place. You can create wonderful illustrations with no shadows, and with full detailed rendering. In the next video, I will just show you how to download things, and then we are going to get to work.
4. Downloads and Setup: This video is going to be a little instructional. I would love to just show you where you can find the resources. Where you are in this class that you are watching now, go down to the projects and resources and on this side you will find the resources that are provided with this class. Here's the my project practice sketch PNG that you need to download. Make sure to download this one. Just click on the paint then hold it down and click on "Save Image" and it will just save the image to your camera roll or photos. Now, you can go back. I'm not going to show you this one, but you can download the shader brush and the liner brush that I'm going to use. These are the exact same brushes that I'm using in the digital illustration for beginners class so if you have taken that class, you already have these brushes, but if you didn't, you can just download them. You can also download the digital shading color palette. Just quick and open in files, and it already imported into your color palettes and you will have the digital shading palette here or at the bottom of your palette. I have it here because it automatically imported it to the bottom. If you need to find it, you will find it at the bottom of your palettes. I have the digital shading original file, that's the procreate file we used in the previous video, so that you can see that. We have the final project sketch, that is the sketch for the final project that we are going to draw together. You can just simply download that as well. You will see one more file here and that will be the procreate file of my illustration that I will do on this iPad so that you have a reference to return to. Open Procreate go to the gallery hit the "Plus" button and let's create a new file. I allow to use screen size canvas because it is big enough, but small enough as well to have enough layers. I'm sure you already know that the bigger the file, the less layers you have and I just love to work in layers. I need them. Click on this "Layers Panel", and let's change the background color. I already have the digital shading palette set as my default and choose this first color and this is going to be the color for this project. Now we are in a new layer and just hit this orange button to insert a photo and from your camera just choose the my project sketch you have. I already saved it a little bit lighter so that it is not fully black but I will love you now to click up here. Click on the "N" button set the opacity down a bit and hit multiply so that you can see through it. Now you have the workspace set up and you should have the brushes. I have them as the illustration brushes, but they will show up to you into imported brushes. One more thing I wanted to say that I love to keep my sketching layer at the top so I will create a new layer below it. Click and hold down to place it below it and every new layer I create will be below this sketching layer. Let's move on to the warm-up activity and we're going to do this, my project lettering and do a little colored drop shadow to make it fun. Let's see you there.
5. Warm Up: Here we are, we're doing warm up. I would love you to choose white color. This is the aesthetic for this class, but actually you can do it with other color you want and choose the Liner brush. Now, we are going to get a little familiar with the workspace, the brushes and the colors we're using. You can of course do your own lettering. What I love to do is to simply go to this new layer that I created, the below this card. This is big so I'll make the brush a little bit smaller and just simply fill it in with the liner brush. I'm not going to do any shading now. If I overrun the edge of the line, you don't really need to worry, but you can just change to the eraser and just erase, and go back and just simply fill in the letters. This is going to be a little bit rough because I don't want to bore you with how I am filling in with these letters. One more thing I want to tell you is that you can stop, the videos and replay them anytime you want. Actually, you can make them slower and quicker, in the video player you are watching this video on right now. I think at this corner. Feel free to use that. It is so hard to find a pace of everyone, so if you find something to be too slow, just skip parts. If you find something too quick, just slow it down, so make it your own. I'm progressing with this. I will make the brush a little bit smaller and do this little folk motif I really love to implement to my work. Now I will turn off the layer of this card and this is my lettering here. Now, what I will do is to slide and hit "Duplicate". Now, click this one below it, hit, "Select" and now choose on this magenta color, maybe you can make it a little bit darker if you want, now hit again and hit "Fill Layer". Now hit the move, and now you can just move it around and you have wonderful colored drop shadow. This is so cool, I love to do this in my lettering. This was a warm up, let's turn to this sketching layer again. I'll just move on to the fox and try out the color shading technique.
6. Shading with Color: So here we are adding color shading technique and we are going to discuss color choices a little bit. I will just do a little demonstration of this, but let's just keep everything organized. I will just select these two layers. Hit group and name the group typography. Now let's creates a new layer above it. You don't need to do this. I'll do this only to show you what I mean by the colors. I'm going to draw a little circle. I'm sure you already know, that if you want to make a sphere from a circle, you need to add a shadow. This is actually one of the reasons we are doing shading. I'm going to Alpha Lock this now. Choose a little bit of a grayish color and choose the liner brush again, with a little bit bigger one and just do this. Can you see that it is already shaded. Now the question is, what color should we choose if we want to shade with color? What I usually do is to choose middle range colors. Let's say this blue one. I will do a new circle. I don't know, maybe up here. I have this layer Alpha Lock it outside, de alpha lock it, or unlock it. I'm going to do a new circle here, and what I do, I will Alpha Lock it again is that I choose a darker version of the same you to do the shading. Can you see that this is how I do usually my shadings, of course, you can choose a different color for the shading. Sometimes people choose something a little bit more violent, but it really depends on the character of the environment you are placing the object, in, what type of flight is there? It is a whole theory, but let's take into beginner level. Let's just keep in mind that you have a saturated color in a middle range. It can be like lighter anyways, and choose a darker version of it to create the shading. Let's do this with the fox. I will create a new layer and choose this. Light orange, and one more thing I'm doing when I'm illustrating as that I think in layers, I always defined what is in the middle, what is at the back, and what is the front. It is easier for me to place the shadows. Now what I am doing is that I am defining the middle layer and it is going to be this part of the fox. You can do this in this coloring style that, you use this liner brush and color the whole fox at once. Or you can just define the shape like this, let's say, and just drag the color in. But with this brushes, as you can see, some pixels are left behind. This is because of its texture, but simply you can just get rid of that with going for it to go down. Sometimes I do it like this, and sometimes I do it like that. This is the middle shape of my fox. Actually, I will extended a little bit down here and now let's create a new layer below the fox. Now my question is what, going to be below the fox, and it is obviously the ear. I will add this ear below it and create a new layer above the body of the fox and it is going to be the tail. I will add see, this shape. It is a good idea to turn off the main body to see where we are drawing. This is actually a silhouette. I will show you what I loved to do. At first my advice is to always make sure that the main shapes are right. It will be easier and you don't need to adjust them that much. What I will do is that I will Alpha Lock all this three layers and chose a tail and choose a white color. Because now we are just blocking in color, and now you can just on this part of the tail really easily. It already has some textures because the brush that I'm using is textured. You actually don't really need to be too precise. I am going to do the shading part try now. What I'm going to use is this darker orange. I will keep the liner brush, and actually we will start with this ear. To know that this ear is behind that. Let me just show you this without a sketch. This is the fox. We have the ear selected, we have the liner brush the darker orange. I'm just going to go through this and draw a delicate little line here to note the shadow. Now let's go to the main body because it is behind this tail a little bit. I'm going to draw this, shadow here. Cool. Now we are at the main body and now we can think that where shadow is, of course, where it is blocking the light. I would say at the bottom of this ear and somewhere at the bottom of his neck, and then, let's choose the tail and add a little shadow down here. I would like to add a little variation here as well. Let's choose a little gray. Let's make the brush smaller and just paint in turn to self so that you can see. Paint in little shadow to this. gray parts are white parts to make it a little bit more lively. Okay, so what do we miss from this fox now is the details and those little decorative white marks and we will be done. I will choose this dark brown that we have here at the pallet to do the the details, I will keep the liner brush make it a little smaller. I will create a new layer above the whole fox for this so that I can adjust it. I'm drawing in the little nose, little mouth. I will choose a navy color and do this decorative thing here. Also, this little florals, and now this.I will turn off this cat. We have this beautiful little illustration. I hope you like it and that you got a sense of what it is to shade with color, and let's move on to the next project, which will be the shading with texture.
7. Shading with Texture: So let's talk about the shading with texture and I'm going to do the same demonstration I've done with the fox, but let's first organize the layer. Select all these, group them, and name them fox. Now let's do a new layer about it. I again have the liner brush and I will do a little circle here. Nice. Now let's choose a gray color. I'll fill on this round shape and choose the shader brush now. Make the opacity at around 30 and I'm shading. This brush is really pressure sensitive. If you press harder, it is dark and it gets a lighter. In this concept we talk about actually including the shading process into the texturising process, if that makes sense. What I mean by this is that you can do texturising in a different process. Let's say in the fox, we can add even more textures above it with different blend modes, etc, and still have these colored shadings below it as if it was an under painting. In this strategy, we are including the shading process within the texturising process. When I want to shade something, I just take textured brush and texturise. When I press harder it will be darker and it will be the shading. I hope that this make sense to you. Let's just do this exact same thing with a color. I will choose this blue again and create a new circle here. I have too much streamline on this brush, so I will take it off. Great. I will choose again a darker version of that color and choose the shader brush of full lock, and I press harder, it is darker, and I go throw it lighter, I'm texturising. Can you see that? I'm creating textures, I press harder, it is darker, and it becomes a shadow. Now let's do a new layer above it. Choose the white color, choose the liner brush. Again, let's define what's in the middle, what's in the back, and what's at the top. In the middle, it will be the main shape. I am going to draw this jug. I need more streamline. If you add the streamline, your lines will be smoother a little bit and will not follow every movement you make. It sometimes comes handy and sometimes don't. Nice. Now create a new layer below it. It will be the ear of the top. Let's create a new layer above it and I will turn off this main body shape again so that I can see what I'm doing. Nice. Turn it on. Choose a gray color and you can choose the shader brush. Actually, I'm not going to use the shader brush right now because there are so many amazing textured brushes that come with procreate. You can go to the artistic ones and what I really allow for this textured shading is the gouache brush. One reason for that is that it can be layered. Let me just show you what I mean. Let alpha lock this free layers, choose that gouache brush, keep the opacity down to at least 30, and choose the main body. Now I'm going to texturise a little bit by going through it. Now, by adding another layer and increasing pressure, I can just add shadows here and there as I wish. Increase opacity, you can go even in more detail in this shading. I love to do this little, it's so-called inclusions with it. Inclusion is the little shadow line where things touch. You can just increase the opacity, make it smaller, and I don't know, draw a line here, it will be nicer. Turn off the sketch because it is a little bit distracting. Let's choose the ear behind it and just show this, the shadows here. When I'm increasing the size, I'm just creating little textures. Wonderful. Let's choose this front part. The lower part will be somewhere here. Let's put some shadows here. Again, this is about including shading within the texturising part. So let's do a new layer, turn on the sketching layer, choose the navy and go back to the liner brush, make it a little smaller, and we are just simply going to this sketch again. You can see I'm using these sketches only as guidelines, I'm not exactly following them. I will make this at the top, this dark as well and here we have one more line. Cool. I think it looks amazing. Now let's move to the grandma and take a look on these transparent layers.
8. Shading with Transparency: Here we are at the transparent layer part. Let us just block into colors for the grandma but again, let's make it a little organized. Select this layers, group them and name them Jug. Let's create a new layer. Now, I will do a demonstration again. Let's choose the white color. I will again just draw a circle. I'll fill lock it and I will do this transparent layer things. I will choose black. I will go back to, let's say Painting and the Round Brush, I will do it with get that. I will make sure that the opacity of the brush is down to this. This might seem the exact same thing that we have here, but here we've chosen a color. Here we played a little bit about the transparency thing, so it is somewhere there. But here the main point is that it is affecting the color that is below it. So now we have done this with white, but let's do blue with the liner brush again, I mean a blue circle. So it is here, I'll fill lock it. Again, choose the black, choose the painting round brush opacity down and if I do the same, it will affect the color. I don't need to choose the darker color to paint it, I just have this transparent layer. It will affect the color immediately with the same intensity. Let's say I will draw this line here and you can see that it will affect, it is going to be a darker orange, a darker orange again, a darker blue, etc, so it's affecting the colors. Let's do a new layer. Choose this darker pink, choose the Liner brush, and let's block in the colors. Again what's does in the middle, what is at the back and what is the difference. In the middle we are going to have, I again have to much streamline, I will just lower it, make it bigger. I will just block in the face of the grandma and make a new layer below the hat. Let's make it her neck. Let's make a new layer above the head. Now that is going to be the hatband. For that, we are going to use this magenta. Let's just do this part, amazing. Now, I will include the heart pattern of the hatband into it. So I will just choose simply white the Liner brush and just add these little hearts here and there. Now let's add a new layer for the details of the face. I will keep the white because actually I forgot to add the hair. So let's put this layer back below the hatband and just draw this white hair for the grandma because she is not bold, nice. I'll just delete this. Maybe add little details with the darker gray, just some little lines, nice. To our new layer, let's add facial features on these lines, so with this darker brown, I will draw her eyes and some wrinkles, nose, mouth, ear. Add a new layer and choose this orange and draw the glasses, cool. We don't even need the eyebrows, so it will be like this. We have to blogged in shapes. There will be a trick now, let's just select all the parts of the grandma, [inaudible] for the grandma and group down. You can rename her as a Grandma. Now slide it and duplicate, and now hit flatten. Now you have the grandma but actually her silhouette. It is going to be easier to shade her. I will just hit Select, and create a new layer and just turn off this flattened illustration of her because we already need the shape. Because we will add shadows into the illustration as well. You will see what I talk about in a minute. So choose a black, go back to the painting and a Round Brush, keep the opacity down. Let's just make our first shadow to the hatband, great. Now let's do a little shadow down here. We forgot the hearts but I will show you that it is absolutely not a problem in a second. Add a little shadow here, add a little shadow here. I will add the shadow, maybe more lighter ones here. You can add these shadows individually to each part of the face but it can be demanding and I want to just show you how to do this. I will add a little shadow below her hair, great, a little bit below her nose. I'll make it bigger, little lighter onto the whole face down here, I mean bigger like this and lighter. Shadow below her face and shadow to her neck. We can do this more smoothly with textured brush, for example but let me just show you again that you can add shadow below this. Let's go back to the grandma and create a new layer below the glasses. Now choose your brush to be smaller and not that small and at this shadow below the glasses. It looks great, amazing. If I pair this with a different brush, so let's say the gouache brush, I can make more smoother, for example, shadings but let's keep it like this for now. One more thing I want to show you, why is it good to do this transparent layer shading is because now if I wanted to add something to the hatband, I can do it and it will be instantly affected by the shadows above it. I don't need to recall anything, I have shadows there. I think this is amazing, I will turn off the sketching layer. This lagged, and now we have this wonderful free illustrations. I would love to ask you that if you are done with these free illustrations, you don't need to do these circles. But if you are done, with this free illustrations, I would really be happy to stake a look on them, so feel free to post them into the project gallery before you approach the final project. Now let's move on to the final project and combine all these three strategies together.
9. Just a Few Words: Congrats on getting here. We are here to the final project which is going to take us at around 40 minutes. Now, there are two ways to continue in the course. The first one is that you do your own illustration. Now watch the next 40 minutes as a movie. You can also fast forward it if you wish. To get the idea of my approach of illustrating. How I progress in it and simply just to get an idea, how would I do that. You can implement things that you like into your own process and after these 40 minutes you can approach your own illustration and do it and upload it as the project for this class. Now the second way is that you do the tutorial with me step-by-step. In this case, I tried to be as followable as possible, if that is a word. I always show the brushes and the color that I'm using in this corner. I also add some notes here and there so that you get all the information that you need. I'm 99 percent sure that I say every time I Alpha lock a layer or unlock it. There isn't one person that I might have missed also in the editing process. Please just also pay attention to that. That I'm Alpha locking and unlocking layers frequently. Also following this long tutorial for a very beginner can be overwhelming, so keep breaks. I've broken down the whole process into four parts. Each of them is around 10 minutes so do one video at a time. It is always a good idea, just to step away from it for a second and to see afterwards the mistakes that we have done, et cetera. This is my advise, if you are ready, let's get into it.
10. Final Project - Grandma's Head: Welcome to the final project. At first, let me tell you that we are going to complete this project together step-by-step, as this class is most suitable for beginners. If you are more advanced, you can do your own illustration, but I'm providing you my own sketch as well. Button here and create again a new screen sized canvas. The whole illustration is going to be portrait oriented. I'm not going to move my iPad that way so that you can see what I'm doing and that fits the camera. But of course you are free to do that while you are working. We are going to follow the same process as we've done in the previous illustrations. I'll click on the "Layers panel" and choose the background to be light pink. The reason behind this is so that I can see the colors better, but usually I do it with a light gray, but now we'll just stay on this light pink, you need now to final projects sketch PNG, which you can download the same way. Like this and now hit "Arrange" button, hit "Add" and insert a photo and just simply insert this sketch here. The sketch is again not 100 percent perfect, but we can just improve it while we are working. At first, I would love to explain to you how I'm approaching every illustration at first. My basic process is that I block in colors. Then I painted color the obvious shades, like for example, this part of this hand will be in shadow, etc. Then I add texture with shading, and after that I add some transparent layers for inclusion things touched. The second thing is that I approach it part by part. I separate the whole illustration into parts like this, like the head of the grandma then this part, then the furniture and I'm going to do that as well. If you are working on your illustration, try to do a this, choose a part, and then again think, what is in the middle, what is in the back and what is in the front. I'll just start with this grandma, chose this skin color. They used a liner brush, create a new layer that is going to be behind the sketching layer again. You can change this sketch layer again. Lower opacity and hit "Multiply" and you close this, and we are at this Layer 2. Now let just block in colors. I want to warn you that I might not get into too much detail because I don't want this project to be too long and boring for you, but feel free to add as many details as you want and do the whole illustration in your style and just have fun with it. Here is the head, I have this little mistakes here. Now I will create a new layer below the head that is going to be the neck, and a new layer about a head that is going to headband. Then I will add a new layer below the headband choose the white color as the hair. Let's do a new layer for the detail, so choose this dark brown to draw the eyes again. Basically we are doing the same illustration as we've done previously. This should be like easy peasy for you know, here the nose the mouth new layer, orange for the glasses. Like this. It looks great. I will add some more details on the headband. We add the white hearts, just randomly placing down. I will add on the hair some gray lines, like this. I also want this part of the eye to be white now, it will just look better. What I will do now is to create a new layer, behind these facial features. I can easily draw behind this line work, like that, and now click on the "facial features" and just add some white dots as the light, to just make it a little bit more lively. Cool. Now let's add a textures. This is the texturising process. We are going to enter now. I love to also lock all the layers. I will choose the shader brush and go through all of them. I will choose this darker skin tone and just taking a little darker, only a little bit. Now click on the hat. You have a little bit darker version of this color. Just add a little bit of this texture around the nose and the cheeks to make it a little bit more lively. Great. Now let's move on to the headband. I don't really want to textuarise the headband but I want a new layer above it so that I can affect all the colors because I have now two of them. I will click on to headband, hit "Select" and create a new layer above it. Now I will choose maybe gouache brush again. Here is the gouache brush. I will put the opacity down and select black, and I will just add little shadows here and dare to have a little. Now, I'm placing these shadows here because I know that I will have this lamp here and it will add light in some direction like this, so the shadows will be on this side. Always keep in mind your light sources. Now, I will [inaudible] and I will keep this layer and just add some more shadows. For example, down below this ear down to the face, we will select a bigger brush and lighter opacity, and just like this, maybe to the neck part, below the nose. I will make a smaller brush, just the little bit of shadow below to hat banned, and also below this hair I have here. I can do this in separate layers as well. If I turn off this catch, I can just simply place every little shadow below, a layer, for example, as we will do with this glasses, I will create a new layer below it, and just add the shadows and the shadows will be here somewhere. Yeah. It cool. No, I don't like this. A little bit of shadow to the ears. Amazing. I will name this as done, but you can, of course, add as many details as you want. You can add more textures, etc. I just don't want to go into much detail. Let's keep everything organized, I select everything and group it and just rename it as Grandma head. Let's continue to the next video where we are going to continue with this part of the illustration.
11. Final Project - Dress and Jug: At first we will have this whole dress in the bottom. Then we will have to drag into middle and these hands in the top. I know now that I missed a line here but we can imagine it there. We're just create a new layer and choose this blue, because the dress will be blue. Now we will start with this bottom layer. Let's choose the liner brush and just simply start drawing the dress, like this. Don't forget these pixels left behind, fill them in. Now, let's create a new layer for the jug, and the jug will be white. I will do the jug again in three layers so I will start with the middle one. Again as we have done this in the previous part it is going to bid this shape. You can drag these colors in. If that helps you make it a little smaller. You can always improve the shapes with an eraser. It will lose a little bit of texture from the edges but, you can just add them back on if you just go around it again. What we have done one more layer behind it. I need to improve this shape will be more like this, and like this. The layer behind it will be the ear of the jug, and the layer above it will be disbarred. I got to turn off the body again so that we can see what we are doing. Cool. Now let's texturize in, so I'm going to turn this back on, alpha lock these layers. I will choose the gray and get back to the gouache brush. A little textures, keep in mind a delight source is here so we don't need to be extra precise. Increase the opacity for darker shadows or lines. I can just do it like this. Now, I will turn all these cancel that I can see it better, amazing. Now this ear, so let's add a shadow here, and to the bottom like this. Let's move to this top, and add the shadow below it. I will go back and add a shadow here so that we can see that this part is like this. You can keep this rough. It will just look nice in the overall composition. I will just draw with navy these details with the liner brush. Cool. I will keep this top like this. Maybe make this smaller. It looks good. Now let's move on and create a new layer above it and turn off the dress so that we can see what we are doing. We are going to choose this blue again. We have the liner brush and just draw this part of the dress. This is the hand. This part is going to be a little bit tricky, because it overlaps but in a little bit. I will increase the size like this. Great. Now I will add this list here, which is a decorative element only. I will alpha lock it and just add it there, and also here. It will be just like this, amazing. Now, I will chose this navy and add this. Now I'm painting shadows with a darker color because I know that this hole will be darker. Now you have a choice to do the hand part on a new layer or into this layer. I will include it in this layer. I will turn off the alpha lock and choose the skin tone. Just simply choose a smaller brush and add it here, like this. I'm not the best with hands so it might not look as perfect, but it will be just good for this illustration. Like this, great. Now, what I will do is to alpha lock it, I will turn off this catching layer. I will look at it. Now I will do again transparent layer over it. Choose the gouache brush in the artistic ones. Gouache brush and the black. A small brush, just add a little shadows to this fingers where they touch the jug. Just right, I will just draw some fingernails with this brown and get back to the liner brush, make it small. I will just add it here because it will be seen this I don't see, and this small ones will be seen, great. Now we have the hands as well. Let's move on to the dress or turn it back on. As you can see, these two a blend into each other. I forgot this laced part and the main part of the dress so let's add it there. Choose the white, and the liner brush. Make it bigger, and just add this little lace parts there. Actually I can create a color as well. I think it would look good. I know I did there. Let's come here. Make the brush somehow wet and just add this part here. Now, choose the blue and a little bit of darker version of it. Not exactly the navy. You can go into the navy but, I don't know. Now I choose the shader brush, make it bigger. I will turn off this layer so that you can see. I will add this texture and you can immediately see the hands. You can go over the white part it will just add a little shadow to that. Now you can choose the hands and just add a little bit of this texture onto it. Just a little bit, I overdone it. Smaller brush to the smaller brush and add a little bit of texture into it as well. I don't like this but I can always just go back and just paint it back if I don't like something. Cool. We miss one more thing and those are the shoes. Simply create a new layer below the dress. I think this pink would be good for the shoes. Choose the liner brush and, I will make it a little bit bigger like this. You can also lock it, we can choose a darker color, choose the shader. Alpha lock the layer and just add a little bit of shadow below the dress can be even darker, nice. If I turn this off you can see I have added just a little shadow below the dress. Cool. We can add more shadows like for example here to look good. Maybe at the end I will add it. But let just move on. Let's keep again, organize the cell like these layers. Group down and rename the group as the jug. We have the dress as well in the jug group. Let's move on to the next video and continue with the furniture.
12. Final Project Furniture: In this video, we are going to do the furniture. So create a new layer and let's start with the wardrobe. I know now from my experience, that orange and the brown look amazingly well together, so choose this brown, choose the liner and let's do this wardrobe. Like this and this. Then fill in these pixels. Now, I will Alpha lock it and choose the orange. Now, choose the shader brush and make it bigger and see what it does. Can you see this texture? It just looks wonderful. You can play with adding this texture, a lighter one then keep it darker there or where there will not be too much light. You can go backward the darker one to add shadows. Maybe you can choose a darker brown to add even more shadows, for example, below this desk that we have here. You can play with it. But what is amazing about this texture, is that now I can use both of these colors to draw on it. Let me just show you what I mean. If I choose a liner brush now, I can just read original brown, I can just draw line work on it. For example this one. Then I can do this line as well and it will be seen. I can do this shelves, not shelves but drawers. Now I can choose the orange as well and I can add these details. Both will be seen and a whole wardrobe we'll be in harmony. You see? I think it looks amazing. Now, let's add this thing. Create a new layer, choose white, choose the liner, and just simply draw this shape. Fill it in. Choose the pink. I will draw this effect here with pink. I will Alpha log this. I can see that this shape is in the best so I will just adjust it a little bit and turn this off. I will erase this a little bit. It will be fine. Alpha lock it. Choose a little bit of gray and you can use a shader brush to add a little shadow and texture. I can increase the opacity all over the brush. I mean, make it smaller and just this texture here for example. Cool. Not the best. I will just move it a little bit and erase from it to make it better. Fine. Now turn on this layer and let's do these plants. Now, we don't have greens in this pellet and it is on purpose because we haven't used it yet. The way I'm choosing these colors, is that I choose a hue and just go around and find the green to that I like. I love it to be more yellow like this here and choose the liner brush, and simply start on a new layer, of course, start to draw these plants. Now the second one. Now I will Alpha lock it and choose a darker version of the color, choose the shader brush, and simply go through it and add shadows here and there. Again, you can keep in mind that the light will come from this site, but you can just add as you wish. Cool. Now I can add the shadow below this one, I would love to use now the artistic again, govache brush black and add a little bit of this shadow on the wardrobe. I will make it smaller like this. to draw this drop shadow on the wardrobe. It looks fun. Now let's do the lamp. Create a new layer. The lamp will be pink. Again, with the liner brush, I'll just add this lamp behind the plant, so place it behind that. Now I will shade again automatically with the darker color here because I know that this will be darker. Great. Add a new layer, chose the white and just draw this thing. I will also add this part of the lamp here. Now go back to the plant and just erase one of this as if it was like around it. I will just turn this. Like this and I have it. Great. I will also add the texture to this lamp, so Alpha lock it, choose a darker version of of this pink, choose the shader brush and just make it bigger last full pack and just add a little bit there. Like that. Great. Now let's move on to the desk. It will be white. We have a new layer. I will just choose the liner brush again, create a new layer below it, and this can look like this. Now, I will choose the stop Alpha lock it, choose a darker gray, keep the liner and with the bigger brush, paint this side of it darker because I know that the side of this desk, will look like this. Now I can click the ''Shader,'' choose the ''Leg'' and add a little shadow below the desk. Alpha lock it, add a little shadow below the desk. There it is like that. You can add a little texture on the top as well if you wish. I don't want that. I want it to be a little bit white. Only this part, will be a little bit gray. Let's create a new layer above it. I know it is a lot right now but let's finish it. Choose the pink and the liner brush, and let's do this bowl. I just finish it off like this. Again, Alpha locket, I will add a little darker magenta, and the shader brush to add a little of texture. When I add a texture, I just go lightly over it and where I add the shadow, I just push harder and I have the shadow. Great. I want a shadow below it on the desk, so I will hit this top dusk choose the black and add a little bit of shadow here. Now, I will add the milk below this bowl which will be white and the liner brush. I will just add it like this. It is weird how this milk looks now, but it is just fine. I would love to add some drops here and there, and I will add some white blue lines into it as if it was really rolling into the bowl. Cool. I will turn off the sketch. I like it. Do you like it? I will add it to cat and the finalize in the next video. Let's just select this furniture, group it and rename it, and name it furniture.
13. Final Project The Cat, The Floor and The Light: In this video, let's add the cat. Turn on the layer, hit a new layer and the cat will be black. Hit the liner brush. I will do this cat on two layers. I'll just draw his head, create a new layer below it and that will be her tail and body. You know what? I will have this leg. Fill this layer in. I will do a new layer above the head, and that will be this little hand here and this leg. You can turn off layers to see what you're doing. I will also lock this layer. Choose a white under the shader. This will be fun. Choose the main body and this little shadow here so that you can see the head. It will add a little texture to it. Cool, now choose the head, add a little bit of texture to the head, just a little, and choose the top layer and let's add a little texture there as well. Just enough so that we can see what's happening. I will keep this white and liner doing the layer. Play this layer above the cat. Draw the ears, and I will add the nose, and some prints like these. Cool. Cute little kitty. Now we have almost everything. I want to add the floor under the rug as well. I will just select this group down and name it as the Cat. Create a new layer below all of them. Choose the navy liner and just draw a line where this sign is. Can you see that here? Hold down to make it straight, and fill this in. This is going to be the floor, but don't worry. This will look better. I will choose this blue, to add a little shading. I will also lock it. Make it a bigger brush, and just add a little bit of this texturing. The navy isn't that dark. Now let's choose this light gray. Create a new layer above the floor, and we are going to do the rug. It is going to be light gray. Just draw an oval, fill it in. Do these stripes. I can do this a little randomly so that it looks better. You can also lock it, and do a darker gray, and a shader brush and just do a little texture over it. Now let's do a cast shadow for these things we have here. Create a new layer above it. Now let's use this gouache brush we have, and just make it bigger, and just make little shadow here below the cat, below the dusk , below the Grandma, etc. Nice. I will turn off this layer and cool. I think this illustration now looks amazing. Now let's do the lamp shadow. Let's select this group down and rename them as the Floor. Now, I will do new layer. You don't need to do this. You can, and choose the red color and the liner. Now we are going to do some angles. Place your brush to these two sides and just draw an angle where the light goes. Not like that, I will make it like this, and this. That will be cool. But don't forget that this desk will block the light. I will make something like this. This is going to be our guideline. We will delete this from the illustration. Create a new layer. Choose the gouache brush again. Make it bigger. Make it transparent, choose the black, and now make sure that you don't pick up your brush while you do do these shadows, because if you do, you'll do a layering and might not look that good. I will do it again. I try to not to pick up my brush. Now, I can make these shadows a little bit darker. For example, below this desk. Maybe I can add one more layer to the top, amazing. I will turn these angles off. We have a nice moody light scent. You can play with it a little bit more if you want. You can add more shadows where you see that there might be from the ball, for example, or here down below the lady, or maybe on the wall behind these wardrobe etc. I think this is enough for this final project, and I hope that it was easy to follow it. Don't forget to post your project into project gallery, so that we can see how it went to you and hope to see your artworks. I'm really curious. There will be a little shadow here as well. Let's go on to the next video and do a little recap. What we have learned in this class.
14. Final thoughts: Congratulations. You have gone through the whole class. Now you'll have free real illustrations and one full illustration. I am sure that you are proud of yourself, and everyone can be. Don't forget to do a project from these artworks and upload it into the Project Gallon. I'm super excited to take a little on them and give you feedback, because I'm here for you guys. If you have any questions, again, don't hesitate to ask them. Also, don't forget to give me a review, so that I can know what you think about the class.
