1. Intro: When designing a graphic design project for print, we cannot just create something nice in functional for final customer. Will also need to know some of the technical sides of our project. We need to be aware of the physical production so we can avoid common mistakes from the beginning and we can take advantage of opportunities to enrich our projects. Designing a restaurant menu is a practical way of creating a complete and real product, but it's also useful for learning how to handle a printing projects were Rios content. Through this exercise we can face to create the aspect, but also the technical one there, actually entirely unrelated to each other. I also included a bonus. To create unique graphics, we will use brushes, will delta hands, we will see how to digitize handmade paint without losing the hand feeling. But don't worry, you don't need to be an illustrator or a professional painter. So many we setup a, someone. I'm an Italian multidisciplinary designer. I worked in advertising agencies, in design studios. Eventually, I decided to be a designer and illustrator freelance. Today, I'm here to share, to share with you my experience in graphic design for print. Some of the things that I'll tell you, I learned them through experiences and some were things that I learned through my mistakes. That's why I think it can be useful sharing with you what my workflow is today. By the end of this class, you will be aware of how printing and production choices can boost your creativity and you will not how to create a proper file for print. You will also know how to design a multiple page projects. And of course, you will have in your work for your portfolio and very excited to begin. So let's get started.
2. Your Class Project: Your project for this class will be designing a restaurant menu. I chose this topic because I believe it can be quite hard to talk about graphic design for print without having a solid real projects, real content to manage. In my career, I already made brochures, catalogs, booklets, but these kinds of projects require a lot of information from your client and a lot of time to be prepared. So for example, when I made this catalog, this furniture catalog, it took me months to design and prepare all the content inside. But with a simple theme, you can face a smaller version of a bigger editorial graphic design project. It will be like putting a foot in the door. At this point, you have to choose a restaurant. It can be the one you like going on the weekends, your ankles one to one, or you're found online. What is important is that it needs to have a website and a menu online that you can copy from. In the resources. I already included five different menus from five different restaurants around the work. So you can use one-up them if you're eager to start. At this point, you can decide if to stick with the real identity of the place you chose or to make a new style. I'll walk you through the project to say my ideal from the concept to the decisions to make before starting designing, or about how to interface with a professional print shop or which are client. I'll give you many tips along the way that I find useful for my Creative and professional work. I will also teach you a specific technique that I like to give you one of the endless possibilities of placing your graphics into your project. For this class, you will need a little knowledge of InDesign and for the shop, optional but very interesting, you will use thrushes, ink or colors, and a scanner. At the end of this class, of course, you don't need to print your menu, but you will need to print some sample pages. Very useful along designing. There are so many things to talk about. So let's get started.
3. Collecting Digital and Physical Materials: You have two options. When it comes to inspiration. You can look for stuff online or you can collect physical stuff stuck in digital. You can serve to great websites like Pinterest or Behance, which are my favorite ones. And you can find really great works, can see what's cool and what's around nowadays. In both cases, you can collect images, creating boards or collections for a specific design project like ours today, using your fairy software can be either Photoshop or Illustrator that I would suggest InDesign instead, craft a collage, insert all the images relating to your project. In there also some color palettes that you want to use and some images more abstract and more connected to your concept. But generally to build your archive is a graphic designer, I would suggest to collect paper material around you. Graphic design books or books in general, are a great source of the culture of the time. And even if they become old fashion way soon, they see are something different to draw on and different from all the stuff that everybody has access to online. But further, my advice yes, to gather brochures. Brooklyn was cool magazines, postcards, catalogs, collect them based on graphic design that inspires you and you will discover new fantastic layouts. An original phone hierarchy, or just the position of colors. But especially collect them to get familiar with many kinds of paper, new ways of binding or special finishes and effects that you didn't know before. Observe the weight of the paper, the appearance detects tour. The effect in the image has print on it. And notice all the kinds of bindings. And also you might find special inc, effect like metallic or fluorescent. There are also special effects like for instance, their debiasing or embarrassing, which impresses or depresses special portion of the paper. It can be a drawing, can be a writing. And other special effect is the digital embossed thing, which for example, through the use of Especially you retained Gibbs, a tactical and optical feeling. So it's good to know all the opportunities that we have to enrich our project.
4. Working with Professional Print: In this video, we will talk about print shop and I have some tips for you. Every time that I have a project in design project for a client and I know that it needs to be printed. It's my manner to know if there's already someone that will take care of it. The printing process usually be clients already have printed material. So they probably have print shop they work with all the time. As soon as they can. I ask the client to put me through to the shop. My advice is do the same. First, asked them what they need your final file to be and take notes. If you get a chance, ask if you can come by and, you know, be friendly, be nice, be curious. Ask questions. Take photos, asked for the kind of binding the do as four samples, especially if they can give you some sample to you for your upcoming project. And it's always good to build a good relationship with them because you can rely on them when you need, you know, even while you're working, you have some doubt or even for an upcoming project in the future. And it's also good for them because you can possibly bring more clients. I have been into different professional print shops and it was a very nice experience. They were a very alpha_ell. They were very passionate about their job and they were, they were really like honestly API to share info with me. And in one case I remember they showed me also the printing process. So I had this very fun, interesting tour around the place and he was really cool. And, you know, maybe I've been lucky, I don't know, but I recommend you to try it. On the other hand, local Bree shops can be quite expensive. So when I have a project that, you know, that I don't have to make so many copies. Like for example, our project today, the menu restaurant that it was like 20 copies. And also my client, he didn't have any specific shop to rely on. I come up with this online shop, online print shop. And the experience was as good as always. In case of an online print shop, you have all the info directly from the website and you can even fill the form to have a real-time quotes of your project. So you can see what sets the price. For example, more copies decreased the price while a quicker delivering increases it. And you can see also the difference between the cost of one or another kind of paper or different kinds of bindings. Also you have the chance to to chat or to call them. And in my experience, I did a few times and there was a problem. But in case of an online print shop, it's impossible, or I guess very difficult. To receive a printed proof in advance. So I cannot promise you will have no problem with this category. My advice is check the reviews before or, you know, see from blogs which one is recommended in your country. And for DOS interested, I will leave the link or the one that they use here in Europe. So as said before starting, it would be nice to have an idea about how to craft properly your fire. And to do so, you just have to take a look up from directly from the website to avoid later remodelling. But don't worry, we'll uncover it within the next videos. Also, choosing paper on line can be quite tricky, but I have two instruments very helpful that I want to show you. So I have these two books. One is a Color Guide and the other one is a paper sample guide. I bought them directly from the website did they use for printing? And before the first time that they used a printing shop, it was quite difficult or line. It was quite difficult for me chosen for the paper because, you know, I just, I could see the choices that I have. I didn't have any sample with me. So when I saw that I could get with few euros this guide, it was just great. Let's have a look inside. Here. You see different kinds of paper they have in different ways. And also, you get a great idea about how an image is when printed on a specific paper with specific feeders. This is not just very useful for you, but also when you have a client and you want to shock him, her, what's in your mind. So it's super useful. From December third side IS also bought this colored guide, super wealthy. So I remember back in time working on my computer and all the things that I was making, one's printed where completely different. And I remember in particular blew that looked very blue to me on the screen. But then when I printed, it was this kind of dark purple. And that was because the amount of magenta was too much. But I was younger and I didn't know really from my screen. In this pages, you have wonderful tables with combinations of the four colors system CMYK in different percentages. In the first pages you have one color in different percentages while the others are on 0%. Dan will be non. You have four colors combination. As you can see, you have this nice tables with all these little squares that are the result of, for example, 10% yellow when 40% blue, and so on. So this guide allows you to have a better idea of what you get printed on a paper. And it's up to you. You can take your color palette before or later and maybe make some adjustments, even if this colors are under specific paper and come from a specific printer. I still think it is a great instrument to refer to. So that's it for now. Let's move on to the next video.
5. Crafting a Mood Board - Building a Concept: Welcome back. We will finally begin our projects. And every well-done project starts with a strong concept. But before we need a client. So if you haven't done it yet, choose a restaurant that you like or got into resources where I already included five different menus from five different restaurants around the world. You will find the menu of fish bar and we'll get a lobster restaurant, an Italian, Chinese, and Mexican one. If you think that the manual that I included are too long, the list is too long. You can cut something out, feel free to do it, but just do it before starting your project. Or if you want, just go on Tripadvisor like ADHD and chosen under restaurant that you'll prefer. Now, the important thing here is to get essentially information and from that, develop a concept. Stick with the current style of your restaurant, or just make a respiring. It's up to you. In order to start, I mean, some basic questions you can ask and answer yourself. So we will start warming up the situation. The first thing you want to know about your restaurant, of course, is about food. What kind of food? As not only in demeaning of the dishes, but also, for example, is it an elaborate food or simple? Is it slow or fast food? Has the restaurant huge, Joseph vicious, or just a few customers? What kind of customers are the majority Yang's adults, families of any kind, sophisticated, et cetera. Prices. See if your restaurant is a hive, raise restaurant, a chip one, or just on the average location, what kind of star has your place inside? Minimal, industrial, colorful, traditional, et cetera, tone. What is the autonomy replace? Is it casual for more sophisticated, retro, et cetera image? Does it already have a strong brand design? If yes, how is it? Other details? For free to add information of every kind concerning that specific place of yours. Ask yourself as much as you need to. Necessary information can be different from one restaurant to another. This is the situation about my restaurant. Food. For this pretty generic for an Italian restaurant. It has a bit of everything. Pizza, faster, meat, fish, salads, et cetera. Customers, mass costumers in my restaurant, our families prices. Prices are on the average. There are not too high. I would say almost. It's almost an economic place. Location. My restaurant is a sea front place, is very begin right? Has huge windows. So it's not exactly an intimate and Qazi blaze tone. I would say my restaurant is pretty mainstream, but at the same time, it is refined. It has a lot of marbles inside, close napkins and table clothes and all the way there's where formal uniforms image. It doesn't have a very strong brand design pre-existing. Other details. This is very singular about my place. This restaurant is open only during summertime. It's inside a hotel. So it's our hotel restaurant. Seems I have here information pretty generic. I want to use a few key words of my choice. I want to use the word Summer. And if I think about summer, I suddenly think about C and bitch, which basically are elements of the landscape around my restaurant. And add the word nature. John, I1 my project to have a pretty informal tone, but it's steadily refined. Based on the preliminary information, I'll make my mood born looking for pictures online. Is they told you in a previous video, I do love Pinterest for this, but this time since I'm working locally, I will also probably take some photos around. Here is my mood board. I have pictures of the sea. Palm trees, which are super common around his area. Seashells found on the beach, and same for the razor clams. Also, I have this two color palettes with blue and green, which also by the way, are the colors of the logo of the restaurant. But seems to always quite old. I decided to go with different shades of this two colors because the original Swan looked to me too bright and saturated. Also blue and green are the colors of the nature and Marian landscapes. So they can be just right to use. So try to think about your place now and see the fetus already has and make your onward bored. See you in the next video.
6. Preliminary Sketch: In this video, we will start familiarizing ourself with our content through a preliminary sketch. Your heavier restaurant. So copy and paste your menu on whatever writing software. Indesign would be the perfect one. Okay. Here is my list. I decided to print it. You can, but you don't have to. I find its convenience for Just for this video. So now to get familiar with a special need for my final menu, I wanted distribute groups of dishes and placed them differently in my pages. We can start with witnesses sketch to figure out how to manage their content before starting directly on the computer. And to do this, I need a we need a sheet of paper and a pencil or a pen, whatever you like, and you raise or if you need to. But this is really like a very rough sketch. So we'll start making rectangles, which will be our pages. And they don't need to be perfect. As you can see, this what I have for now here. So, so I want to manage this kind of dishes together. So I will put appetizer in one page for sure. And then I want all from the kitchen, which in his kitchen and sides together. Pizzeria is very big. Go. I watch rye bread and white feeds us and especial with stain another page together with this other ships I will try to here. And then another page for dessert, beverage and coffee. And last one will be winery. Okay, you know, what I wanted to do now is to place frames of myText inside my pages. So I know the first two will be my front and back of the cover songs. We'll place appetizer somewhere here. I really like online texts on the right, and it's not very big. So this can be very elegant, just like that. And then I will have my kitchen dishes. They will be in another page. No close to this because this will be my color and this two will be together and this will be in another couple of pages. So maybe I can try to make something and a sanitary when it comes to fit Syria. I have a very big least Also I have double language guys in all the ingredients. So I think I will use a very big portion of my page. Then I have other special pizza. Just be very big. And well does and other small paragraphs under very like kind of small. So maybe I will make this, you know, I'm just guessing here, I cannot be sure from here. So maybe I will have something like that. But I will have a room for some graphics if will work. And then I have deserved beverage and coffee so I can keep going on my central frame. And one more about winery in the middle. Okay, there could be an idea of my layout. I'm missing two pages here. I don't I don't need to use them, but I will put them here just for you because these are going to be my last cover. So the front and back of the back cover. Of course, the moment of the truth will be right on the computer. But sketching is always a good exercise. So even if you want to start right on the computer, this preliminary step I recommend you guys to do. I think that my layout, we'll be very dynamic because it was such a kind of paragraphs I don't think is a good idea just following the same layout on every page. Policy. And remember, you can choose from many page sizes, especially based on how long is your food and beverage list. When starting a project like that, I would recommend to check for sizes from your print shop, either local or online. I'm pretty sure you can have whatever custom size being more, but it's always good to know which kind of sizes are the standard from your print shop. I also included a list of them on the resources. So if you want, you can choose from one.
7. Indesign Part 1: Fonts and Adjustments: Alright, we finally got to InDesign. This is the manualized I'm working with. I want to go to File New Document. Preen preset. As you can see in design, already has many standard sized paper performance. And I want to go with the A4, which is a super common size here. And in many places around the world that use ISO 216 S paper standard. For those who are unfamiliar with that, let us say it is the closest form until later size. I'll try these because I'm sure I won't go bigger than that and I'll figure out if I will stick to it or try something smaller and different later. First, I want to type the file name here, menus to share. Okay, sorry guys, but my mind works with millimetres. I want to go with portrait orientation. I'll start with ten pages, just like my sketch. I work with facing pages in this way, I know exactly how the menu will look like once printed. We'll talk about margin and belief further. So create. So this is my document in case you're missing some tools I'm going to use here. You'll find them under a window. Or by the way, I'm working with the Essentials Workspace up here. If you're working with Adobe InDesign 20-20, you'll miss the control panel with the essentials. But just click on Control under window. We are ready to start. We'll start on the third page, as seen from the sketch. What I want to do now is coping and pasting my menu. But this time I want to boot groups of dishes in singular frames inside senior pages. Dishes I want staying together, trying to seek to my sketch. So I click on the Type Tool, all my tools panel and start selecting common see or edit Kofi. I making your frame common V, or edit paste. And your frame on the next page. Select more dishes. Paste. As you see here, I have all text linked together, even on different pages. That is not what I want for my menu right now, but it is a way that can turn back useful to know for other kinds of projects. So I'll quickly explain how to tread texts from a frame to another. Just click on the little second square on the downright corner of the frame. Dan, making you frame. If, for example, you resize the first one. The text missing was suddenly appear in the other one. Or in a different situation. I have not enough space and my frame, I can click on the little red icon with the schwa symbol. That is also a bad mistake. That happens a lot. So be careful and remember to work in normal view screen mode. If you work with the premium mode, you won't notice anything unless you select the frame. But you can also pay attention to the little error icon down here, which tells you that something is wrong. So I just click on the icon and make the new frame. Okay, back to my normal scream or view. I want to show you one more way I often use when hoping objects. Let's suppose I want a new frame which looks exactly like this. Select, I hold the Alt key on my keyboard. You'll see a double arrow, a blackened and wide one. And I drag the frame holding also the Shift key. Microbial will move orthogonally. Okay, now I can select manually, but I usually use common a, which is under Edit, Select goal. But remember to click inside a frame using the type tool before selecting and copying again from my least pasting. Okay, I want to resize this. Okay, so let's stop here now. Even if we believe we have done nothing yet, this is actually a good way to start. This is the way I always approach a new project like that. It is good to orientate ourself instead a project to warm up the situation. And also we no longer have the blank page fear. Actually guys, I forgot something important. Save your file and save it often got on file and save. I already gave a name. I want to make a new folder. In making folders when working with InDesign is very important. Work always neatly with InDesign, you took me time to learn this, but it's kinda necessary. I always regretted it when I had to go back to some old messy work folder skill share class. Of course, you can make something better than this. And say. One more significant design element that will determine the managing of the space, but especially the design here will be the font we use. Looking for a character can be quite frustrating sometimes, especially if you're not happy with your personal archive. When you have a new project is always a chance to amplify your collection. But I think you should not lose the focus here. So try to stay inside an amount of a specific time, like one or two hours. Figured out was by your font should be in advance to see what you look for. Do you need a serif or sans-serif in modern retro handwritten? In my case, I want to look for something with a fresh mind. So I will look for a handwritten font, but clear and well readable. I usually look for characters online to the website, the font that calm. Or I type on Pinterest or even Google Images handwritten or I don't know, modern free font. And see what catches my attention. Many bloggers save collections of Free Fonts. Pretty impressive. And that's a great way to go. Choose a few characters of your preference in user sentence-like. Quick Brown Fox jumps over a lazy dog, a classic one. Dan, right in our new paid, using different characters you chose. You can even choose a couple of them. Maybe one for titles and the other for the body is general rule. Obviously tried to use the more elaborate for titles and a cleaner and simple for the body. Don't forget to type uppercases, regular, Bold, light, and Italica if you have them indeed, preferred fonts with these options. And especially see different sizes between nine or ten to 14 points. And remember, some font manufacturers place embedding restrictions to their font. So before having troubles choosing a font that cannot be incorporated to your final PDF, always check possibly restrictions. Then printed out. This guys is very important. This is my number one tip. Always sprint something you cannot be sure about from your screen. In this way, you can see if your font is readable and was size works better. Look for the right compromise between what's nice and what works. And remember, premier, a one-to-one. Do not bring it fit into your page. And we are back to InDesign. What I need to do now is to style this paragraph. So the first thing I want to do is changing the font as they're working with the first paragraph here and see how it goes. I select everything. Got up here on the crafter search bar on the control panel. And I type the name of the font HMOs. I use this one now and I add one more later, simpler and clearer for laden information like the website of the restaurant or so. I really do like this one. But changing the font doesn't seem to be enough, right? So what I need to do now is playing with hierarchy highlights on decks. And as you see, I already have uppercases and lowercases that separate Italian from the English language. But there doesn't seem to be enough vital way. I'll show you quickly how to change cases. Just select the text you need to change, got on type, change case. So here you have a few options. Uppercase or lowercase, title case, Sentence case. I go back to lowercase here. At this point, I want to use the bowl version of Microraptor. I'll apply two titles for sure. But I want to bill also capital text here as well. To do so, I select my first line, change in bold, and then it's not funny, but the eye dropper comes to our health. So I click on my bold text and it keeps selecting the others I want to change. I realized this is not a very strong bold font, right? I need to improve the situation here. Another way is by using colors. So I want to play with colors in try to make this paragraph more interesting. I already made my two colors. Show you them appear. You have all your colors watches. So I made two shades of blue, one for Italian and one for English. By the way, if you don't know how to make cars in InDesign, it's actually pretty easy. Click on this item and on the menu. New colors watch. We are working with CMYK. Move around your four colors and what colors you like based on your project research, et cetera. Then you can name it using color values or decide on a different name as I did. So again, select the text, change the color, then go with the eye dropper. It starts looking better, but I don't want to use back here. So I have this dark blue for English. I have to do the same again. Alright, I started to be happy, but I'm not satisfied yet. I want to improve readability. This lines are too close to each other. It can be difficult to read. Also, I have plenty of space, so I'll definitely do it. So let's play with line spacing. I need to click My photograph and work with leading values right here. Until unsatisfied. I need to select the text. It's in auto mode right now. Let me try one, whatever number first. Let's see. Let me change this. At this point. I'm pretty happy. Now I need to apply all the adjustments to all my frames. I'll probably start from the pizza one, the big one. So if something doesn't work because of lack of space, for instance, I can fix it before applying everything to other paragraphs. So I keep on working and I'll see you in the next video.
8. Indesign Part 2: Format, Binding, and Layout: Okay, so in this video, we will move on with our project, talking a bit more about how to have control over our content and we'll create our layout. At this point, I can give it the perfect rule to apply to create your layout, which is also something that goes with your taste, your preferences, and your sensibility. Personally, I didn't study graphic design. My degree was in industrial and furniture design. Lay there. I learned software on my own, little volatile, and eventually I found my first job insight in advertising agency. So basically, I learned by working. I had great colleagues, very helpful, but I didn't have many rules in my mind to stick to. And I was NIM the kind of person that always worse in the uncomfortable zone. I take risks. I like to experiment. I always try at least to make things in new ways. So I was always hungry for images of other designers script works. That's why I was always gathering all kinds of printed stuff. So my advice to you is be curious, observe, look around. You will feel so, so many things made not by graphic designers, but from people, they just know how to use software. So be critical. Even beautiful works that might seem to you that a regular rules, there's always some balance, some consistency makes the work beautiful and functional. So if you want to break rules, always do it properly, but I can give you a few more guidelines. Now, you have an idea about the space you need. Compare to your content. So you can decide if choosing for another paper format. Together with that, decide what kind of binding you want, because this can affect your layout. And I'll briefly show you why in a minute. Here two examples. Spiral or a wire binding and stapled minding. These are the cheapest way to choose for your final product if using a staple binding domain rule is the multiple of four. So in my case where at the moment I have ten pages, I should increase the numbers who ate or increase them to two hour. That is because the module is a single sheet with four pages. While if I decide to use a spiral one, I can have the number of pages I want, but I have to consider a room in my layout for it. Another benefit is that you can open the file up product at 360 degrees, which is pretty handy for a menu. At this point, I started on my paragraphs, is time to find the right place for your test frames and to manage space issues. As said, I cannot tell you exactly what to do, but remember to be consistent in even if you want to experiment something cool and original, never forget to make it clear and well organized for this project in the new restaurant, readability is a must. One more important step before starting lemmas, venture words about margins and why working with facing pages is important. When placing a tax frame on your page, for example, like these in here. You have to be aware of a limit you cannot across because words might be cut by oxygen from the machine. So as space from the cutting line of three to five millimeters should be a safe choice. But of course, you can ask to print shop about it. But in my case, I decided to use a spiral binding. So I have to consider some extra room for it and inspire one, always be on the left side of my pages. So here it comes in handy to work with facing pages. This is my trick, a draw, a square of ten millimeters per ten. And about this measure, IE checked on my online print shop to give instructions by everything you file should look like. And that's a good way to start your design. So I put it in here between pages, Dan, and make a rectangle. So now common C to copy, then right-click and Paste in place in every page I have. Now I consider this as the new margin of my page. And I will have done a distance from here of at least three millimeters. This is essential also, for example, if I want to place this frame right in the middle of the page, because now I have a new center considering the spiral. So now it will look like in the middle. One more important suggestion I want to give you about type. This is especially for students not living in an English language based country. Because in English there are no graphic absence. But in Italian, French, Spanish, and many other languages, there are many. So how to manage this issue professionally? You use Beliefs, will under Type and click on leaves. Every time you need to use a specific accent on World. The type cleaves. Type the letter. You need an a, for example, double-click. And with the double-click again, you will have it in your paragraph. Then I could keep on copying and pasting it. That is a professional way to manage text. Some of you already have them on the keyboard, but not in capital letter form. One more little trick. This is about reviewing your text. Go up here on type and down here on show Hidden Characters. Let me delete disguised before. Here, InDesign shows you if you typed by mistake too many spaces between words. So this is very useful to have complete control over your content. To cities. Of course, you need the normal screen worldview. If you feel this little dots are too light to be seen and change the color. Let's try with magenta. Maybe now is more visible. For example, I decided to me free spaces between dishes and prices. So I visibly check if I did it right. But if between words I put too many spaces, I can see it deleted and make it right. Of course, I don't want to work with this on all the time. It's kind of annoying. So if you want to make your menu very consistent, you can decide to have fixed margins or just simple locked guides for the position and limits of your paragraphs inside pages. I don't think I'm going with this for this project, but maybe if I decide to have into different pages, my paragraphs are aligned to the left or the center of the page. I'll take care to have them at the same height when possible. But it really depends guys. Because, for example, if I have a long paragraph in a very short one, like this one, for instance, if I put them at the same height, maybe there will be no balance inside the page. So this one is a little bigger, right? So it is really about looking for the right balance in the whole project. But also within the page. Of course, I'm going to do something like if I land this on the left and place it here. And then I go to the other page. I don't think I want to work like that. So look for balance in your choices. And that's what I meant before about being consistent, even without being rigid about rules. It goes without saying it. But of course, it also depends on the kind of project you're facing. At this point, the game will be your text frame surround in find the nice proper way to place down. I'll start from here. Yeah. One little trick I sometimes use if I have an annoying situation like this, when I have left on the next line, just a price or a word. That's what I do. I select, if you words. And up here, I reduce the space between letters. I know this is not something very nice to do, but you know, no one will notice it. And is airfoil if done with discretion. Alright guys, this is my final result. I decided to go with different layouts. I also added some more info like the name of the restaurant on every right page or the website on second page, or hear the cover charge, which is common here in Italy. But for example, in the US, you can add 2pz and taxes or whenever you like, look for additional information to put from your restaurant website to make your menu look in more real. Above this lines, it's a nice instrument. You have insight, InDesign, and make a line with the line tool. From here, My Tools panel, pole shift to make a strict selected from here or go on a Windows stroke. You can change way, caps, joins, or for example, the style, just like I did. And this is very small. Now let me change weight. You can use this kinds of cute lines. You know, we have regular lines never go under 0.25. points. Or they might be hard to bring even for a professional printer. I want you to notice this now. For example, in this case, at first I was working here with a single big frame. But then it was difficult to manage the space between this page and this one because I really wanted them to use the same amount of space, especially being close to each other. Steal the sense of working with facing pages. I really wanted this paragraph online to this one. I'll show you using a guide. And you didn't do it, right? Just let me zoom a bit. Youth guides a lot. Okay, to do this, there is another super-useful instrument I need to show you. So I split my frame into little frames. And let's say I have a situation like this before. I want the second one right in the middle between the others. So I click on them. Then I go to a line. I love this, I use it a lot. You can align objects to the left, to the right in the middle, for example here. Also, distributed spacing is super useful with a click done, very easy. I love it. Of course your paragraphs needs to be well-crafted. Did not extra space beyond your text. And let me go back to my preview mode with all these guys around. It's very confusing. One more thing I want to show you is, for example, here, I decided to go with two different frames. I didn't like to see prices nets to this big amount of text. It was very confusing, very hard to read in order to make this work in though, and to have prizes in texts aligned perfectly. I'll show you. You need to use the same parameters in both frames and ofcourse aligned on top. So for example, these tidal here is 20 points with a leading of 24. Then I have 11 points in leading up 19. Then 16 points in 19 points leading in, then it will be always 11 with 19. And that is what we need on the other frame, 2411191619 and Dan parameters I chose for my paragraphs. Then I want to group them common G. And that is what I did with my honored paragraphs here. So it will look different with graphics, but it's pretty nice to me and could also work just like that. One last tip. Of course, you can use your spelling correction tool under Edit spelling, check spelling. But a rightful world can stay in the wrong context and the computer can not know it. Also, you might have put the wrong price to some dishes. And tech can be very bad. You really are in a risky position because watching the monitor all the time decreases your ability to see mistakes. Print your file, make your first check. And then always for your projects, ask somebody you trust to do the same for you. But you really need to do this on paper. It would be perfect if this point also your client would do it, but eventually it will do it anyway, and we will see it at the end of this course. Alright guys, let's move on to the next video. I'll explain my way of adding some graphics to this project.
9. Graphics Part 1 Brush, Color, and Paper: All right, it's time now to add some graphics. I will explain to you one technique that will be super cool to use in whatever future project you have. Of course, this is just one way. Also. A project can be beautiful with no graphics at all. Because the design touch can be in the font. You use a grid layout. Maybe the choice of, you know, a very nice paper with a nice background color or with an ice. Very original binding. But unfortunately, this is not less, is more time here. So let's make some graphics. Ok. To start with the paper, I recommend you guys to use white paper and just using simple copy paper here, nothing special. Then we need colors. I'm going to use black. I've used different use before, but eventually I changed it in post-production. So it's up to you. You can experiment use. If you differentiate. This one is acrylic, By the way. Of course, we need water. And I have many kinds of precious didn't need to be very expensive. They can actually be in very bad like this one. Or a smooth and nice rounded squared. It really depends on what you wanna do. Try them, have some fun experiment around and see what you like. The first thing I want to do and I recommend you guys to do is to try your brushes in, see how they work. Know them. Make Mars see, feel like I really like this one. Okay, let's start with some waves. Like this one is very small. Okay, let's move on to a new sheet. So I want to try with another brash way. Straight lines. Great. Okay, to hear, but I wanted to do something more abstract at this point. For example, I observed that there are very nice Michel Potter's, all my clowns and graze in clumps. I want to take inspiration from them. Something more evocative about it is to understand where they come from. I am Wind. There was this nice pattern on the razor comb. We do maybe a school of fish stock. This is very hard to see what marks that you make. You don't need to worry about the result because everything with chains and the computer, I'm thinking all a DOM tree, maybe I can use just the Chang'e suddenly becomes 100 beta. Just raise your lines with confidence in Take your time three times. Now, right? We have this kind of palm trees here. And we want to try to reproduce the natural shape for its trunk. But nobody needs to know what's this? You know, it's just mind inspiration. The inspiration that I'm working with. Maybe I'll use it. Maybe I want to know, just experimenting around and having some plan. Of course, if you are a good thing. But if they're not, you know, again, just try and see my Be nice anyway. You can also trace an image if you want to. And you can use a band, for example. Let's say you have whatever emergence of food or whatever your concept is a violet and trace it and saying, right? Right. Okay. I can even use just a portion of this, even if it doesn't seem like a very nice join. For example, I can just use some parallel like that on a corner of a page and it will seem completely different. Okay, so I've done my little sketches here. Just experimental around. Think about your concept. Be relaxed and see what you come up with. Okay? As I already said, I learn from my mistakes sometimes. So I'll show you the original paintings I made for my menu. And I have also some stuff here. So as you can see, I worked on two different kinds of paper with different texture. And also, one is a little bit yellow. And these kind of things affect the result of your work. So be careful and tried to use always for this technique, the same kind of paper. That being said, scan your images at 300 DPI. To do this, you need a scanner. I'm sorry, guys. I don't think you can do it with your phone or at least it depends on the phone you have, but I cannot guarantee it. But to go professional, you need a scanner. And if you don't have one, just go on a coffee place. 300 dpi is the resolution to go for a printing project. This is not actually an absolute truth, but it is for printing project at this size.
10. Graphics Part 2: Photoshop: To begin over your scans in Photoshop. Now, when we want to do is to make the white disappear. To do it, that page needs to be super white. That's why working claim before would hugely help you later. So again, use a white and clean sheet of paper and a scanner instead of a phone camera. To check your white Click on the foreground color and with the eye dropper click around your page. It's a pure white. If the cortical here is made by six f, I didn't reattach this image at all. It comes right from the scanner. I said them as TIF images to give all the information from my file. But jetpack is fine to now go only or panel on luckier layer and select your page holding common key, click on the Layer icon, then copy common. See. Now making a layer click on the foreground color, check if it's a pure black. Click on the paint bucket and click this point at the mascot from here. And then holding the ALT key, click on the mask. Common V to base your painting on-demand. Go up here on image adjustments. Invert. As you can see, something cool is going on. Click alien to your layer here. Common D to Deselect. Dan, drag your mask to the trash icon. Okay, but here, choose apply. Hide your original layer down. Amazing, your pain now is totally transparent. Let's apply some color now. Double-click on your layer and layer style. Click on color overlay. Ok. I'll go with this nice one. Now, it already seems working perfectly. But let's add in your background layer. Okay. Let's make it a nice blue paint bucket. Again, click. The result is really amazing. I love this technique. It's magic. Now, if you might think that your paint is too light, just make a few copies. But always saved the original one. Turn it off. Then select your copies and click on the menu here and merge them. In this way, you can have a much more intense shade. And if you need to, you can also clean a beach or paint using the eraser tool. Here. What you can do now is using the laser tool, select each page you want to use for your menu. Making a file with an A4 again, I definitely want 300 dpi. I want to work with CMYK that ground transparent. Go back to my paint, common C to copy. Common B on my new layer. I don't need all these favor. So I want to resize this, prompting the image. Okay, File, Save As my project folder. Ski shop class scans. New Folder, paintings. Okay, now I want to save my file. Ok, done. Now, I can keep on going selecting and saving honor paintings on my page. Now that you know how to work your images do the same process to all your paintings. And I recommend you to save and name each drawing. As said, put them in a folder inside your folder projects, and I'll see you back in InDesign in the next video.
11. Placing Graphics: Now we have all we need to complete our menu. We are back to InDesign. Let's see how to include our graphics in here. Before starting, I want to point out is important rule about graphic design for print. Bleed. When we have something like a color bit browned, a pattern or graphics, dad in our project, stand on the page. To have a well down safe projects, we need to add a least three millimeters out around our pages to be sure about their measure. Sql print shop, or check instructions on your online print shop. Let's see how to do this. Click on File, documents it up. As you see here. It can also change your margin setups and bleed. Let's go with tree. With a chain on. You have the same measure all around your pages to bottom, inside, outside. As you see now, I have red line all around my pages. This is a visible guide useful to extend my graphics behind page edges. For example, I decided to have a blue background color for my color. I also have my little palette here. So I just want to go on here on the Rectangle tool on my tools foul and make a rectangle and an extended 2y bleed lines. Now I change the color with the eye dropper tool. Let's see it through the preview mode. I go back to normal screen loan. Let me go. But it's on my last page to Florida back colder. Now let me put this on a separate layer to work neatly. But there is one important thing to point out, love bleed into working with stabled binding or similar to your beliefs should be considered only on three sides. Those that will be cut. So now here with the stables we'll replace. But this one, this one. And this one, the cutting edges. That's why it is important to know your binding from the beginning of your project. So always work with facing pages during the design process. These guys is necessary to remember, I'm sorry if I'm repeating myself a lot. Now, let me place the paintings I worked on in Photoshop. To do this, I have to click on this little rectangle frame TO here. Let me create a new layer before paintings. I make my first frame here. I usually go with common D. Or you can go up here and down place. And I want to use this one. The file is full of empty space, my bags, the paintings right here to pay attention to frames because you might hide some portion of the graphics. With the selection tool. You can move your frame and is content everywhere. While with the direct selection tool, you will move only the image inside the frame. Besides this properly. With the selection tool holding common shift from your keyboard, you can scale the drawing and the frame from the corner. If you hold also the old key, the scale will be from the centre. Now, let me spend a few words about how leans work. In a panel link, you have the list of all the images you're linked to your file. Here, you can readily check much information about each link, the page where it's placed, name for month, color space. You can see if it's right for bringing same resolution dimensions. And also the folder where it is located. But if you later move your image to another folder, a warning will appear. I'll show you an example. I have the painting in the right folder here, but if I move it to another folder. As you see, this warning will appear. Indesign doesn't know where the fires anymore. You can solve this in two ways. Food vacuole imaged to the place it was before, like this. And everything will be okay. Or really the image just double-click on the warning and click on open. Just let me put this back in the folder where it belongs. But one special thing about working with an open file like our PSD, is that if you want to change something from your original file, the color, for instance, you make the change, save the file in InDesign will note the sampling changed. I'll show you. Lemme turn off this color overlay effect. Come and asked to save back to InDesign is you see here, this yellow triangle tells me that InDesign knows that something changed. So as the message says, double-click to update it, it is so easy. So now my painting is black. Or you can decide to embed your links to your file, which is something I used to do a lot back when I was really messy. I don't do this anymore. Let me fix this phi for the shop. I also want to show you other possible scenarios here in InDesign on control panel, there are a few tools here to transform your object and link pain. In our case, you'd count flip it can rotating or OData widow specific angle. But what I want you to see here is the reference point. So if, for example, I want to do something like that, I want to draw a drawing right in the middle between two pages. So I making you frame common D. I want to use this night Paul polymath. I wanted to be on the right at the size of the frame. Preview. That's what I have now. But when I deliver my final file to the print shop, final document will be made of single pages and swelling in my next video content right now, but okay, so let's go to file documents. It's up and uncheck the facing pages. Now, of course, I have my drawing only on one page. So one thing I can do here. Let's go back to the normal screen mode. Also to see images in a good resolution, go to Display Performance and click on high-quality display. So back to the topic here. I click on the image, common C, paste in place. So only the y axis is correct. We actually need this portion here on the page. So I click up here on the x axis and I add the measure on my page. So as you see, you have exactly what you need, but it will be the final change before saving your PDF 5-4 print. By the way, this is a kind of a risky choice to make in a project, you need a trust stubble print shop for GIS. I can resize my frames. But of course, I need to know what kind of binding I'm using here. Let's say Museum staple binding. So I have to move the frame to the edge of the page here or would aspire a blinding and move it to the bleed guy. Okay. Let me delete everything. Let's go back to File. Douglas, adopt certain pages. All these said, I'll start placing my graphic surrounded. See. Okay. Okay, so this is the way I place my graphics and this is my callback. Let me put this on previous came all this flavor formers, high-quality. So these are my pages. Pretty dynamic. Now I'm going to talk about the Kober really liked this one. But I also decided to go with something a bit risky. This green on this blue, there's a big contrast. So I'm not sure about the results. In situations like this. I'm making you document improper, simple printing that damn, I put it in a local coffee shop. The result might be different than the final one, but gives you make me feel better or you'll make me change my mind. That's my tip for you. This is my print sample. I chose 200 grounds and I felt pretty satisfied. So I feel safer now. At this point, I always make also a black and white print sample of my file. And this guys is really important because now it's time that your client takes his responsibility. Maybe you already sent him the final file and he was super happy. But I'm pretty sure it didn't pay the right attention to all the details. So what you need to do is make a print sample and ask him to check carefully every page and every detail. And if everything works fine, asked him to to sign every page as approval. If you're working far away from him, send the file by email, but recommend him to check your pages with the printed version and ask for approval by email. In this way, you'll be free concerning responsibilities about the content, but of course not about colors and graphic choices are financed ready? I'll see you in the next video with the final step. Say bats.
12. Saving a file for Print: Okay, our design project is done. We already spoke with a reference from the print service, received sign approval from our client. We are ready to save and deliver our final file. Last time we want to check the everything is correct. But the first row to set the 5'4 print, unless a different request from the print shop is to put a document on single pages. So unchecked fizzy pages from the documents that are the easiest thing to do is verify some errors occur from the error box. We might have changed something in our tests without realizing that a couple of lines have sleep. The on the edge of the final text frame. Check from the link panel that all your images or say that 300 dpi and are in CMYK color mode. And check the No one has been carved from a framed small Miss necessary to have a last, last final review. After all, our reviews will ready to explore come e or file export. Okay, we want to go with Adobe PDF presets or print and say, I am already on the poorest quality precept. You should be all pages, but maybe you need a range of pages. So you type here the first and the last page you need with a dash in the middle. Or you add singular phages using a comma. Then I usually check on this box view PDF Oscar. I didn't always find something wrong to fix. And I also checked to optimize for fast web view. Let's go to compression. Here. I want you to notice that I said I'm working with fresh quality. But if I select high quality, bring the resolution setup for images is exactly the same. 300 PPI pixel per inch, which in our cases DPI dots per inch. Since pixels turned to dazzling when they're printed. Supposing we are working with a professional bring company though, we will go for press quality and you will know why in a minute. It marks in bleed asset, it's always good to ask to print company requests, at least del require crop marks employed. We set our bleed in the file so we can stick to it, or we can go with a different number. Let's say I work with five millimeters, but they need them to be three. So I'll just type it here. Output. This page requires a list of very technical information. They only European company can really give you. For instance, here, destination. There is a long list of colour space you got from the printer. And this one is one big difference between high-quality print and press quality. As you see, I can change destination with this preset. Let's keep on supposing we are working with oppress quality, advanced. Sorry, but I've never needed changing anything from here before. Same for security and 0s here you have just a summary. So let's just export. So our file is ready. Iphone nervous all the time at this point, can the lie about it? But mistakes can happen. That's why I was trying to give you tips about how avoiding them as much as possible, especially if you're working under pressure. That's not easy at all. It's always good to have a pair of trust law fresh eye on your work, somebody you trust, I believe or so. That's why I wanted to tell you guys as much as I knew about working with print. Because unlike web design, you can not hear the lead and repost your work with a clique. Let see this crop marks here. I thought that maybe not everybody knows about their function really. I'm about giving you a little demo Banos, since the best way to learn is going with practice. Okay. We are not done yet. In my experience, if any descendant visualization PDF copy to my client, I needed a different PDF. So the first thing I want to do is put in a line between pages. We are back to facing pages as you see it through preview mode. Now we have this line black 1, right-click copy, right-click paste in place, pasting place. Paste in place. Now again, File Export, menu, client. I want all the pages. I want them to be spread. I want to view the PDF after and optimize. Compression is fine. Now March assembly, I don't want bring marks. I don't want bleed. And Dan explore. This is a good visualization copy for your client. You will see exactly what he got. He really needs this line here because he doesn't see what we see and doesn't know what we know. And in my experience, most clients and really have a lack of imagination. One last thing, let me delete lines first. You better put them on a specific layer, unlike me here. Okay, let's go to file again and click on packets. I love this one. We're about to create a folder complete of everything necessary about our project. It is good as a complete copy of our work to give to the client. If, for example, in the future he needs somebody else to work on it. Maybe you change the least of the menu. Of course, if this is the previous agreement, he will have the open phi in InDesign fonts used. Links. And much more information about the file. Click on package. This folder is a great way for us to, to archive our work in a very clean and neat way. This is our folder. We have PDF version in design one. All are linked images and our funds. Okay, at this point, this is the very end. I'll see you in the final thoughts.
13. Final Thoughts: All right, we got two and a final thoughts. But before I wanted to show you my menu, the one that inspired this class. I know this class was a bit demanding because there were so many things to talk about. But I hope it was challenging and that you enjoyed all the topics that we have dealt with were really discussed so many things. We saw combat good habits to have as graphic designers. And we saw how to manage a 5-4 frames. And also we talked about musicians to make in advance. Because as said, our work here doesn't start and end within the computer. This project might have seemed minor at first, but it was actually a perfect, not too complex way to explore many issues together at the same time. Plus, you learn a new technique to digitize handmade painting in case you like me love handmade painting and drawing. And also you have in your work or your portfolio that you might try to sell to a restaurant if you want to. And of course, you know Moraga professional printing. I really can't wait to see what you made and I'm very excited to see if I can help you more. I'll try to give Fitbits to whoever requesters it. You don't need to bring anything, upload your fire in JPEG. And I will really appreciate senior working progress along the way. The process is very important in the learning journey. Amino, if you'd like to keep on working with me in creating new brand design style for your restaurant. Thank you so much and if you liked the class, please share your thoughts with their community. Ciao.
