About This Class

In a digital world where people increasingly rely on the same templates, fonts, and AI-generated visuals, handcrafted expression is becoming more valuable than ever. So instead of using the same fonts as everyone else… why not create one that sounds like you?

Creating your own font is a way of bringing your human touch back into your work.

Hi! My name is Pamela Calero, and I’m a creative director and visual storyteller. I give visual form to ideas to simplify purpose-driven projects through a poetic and conceptual approach.

As someone who deeply values authenticity in visual communication, I’ve always been fascinated by typography and the emotional power of handwriting. A handmade font can communicate warmth, intimacy, playfulness, imperfection, spontaneity, and character in ways standard digital fonts simply can’t.

Whether you’re building a brand for yourself, creating work for a client, or making digital artwork, custom typography instantly creates distinction. It transforms your visual communication into something recognizable and personal.

Making handmade lettering is incredibly fun, but the truth is, we don’t always have the time to create everything from scratch every single time. Turning your handwriting into a font is a one-time process that gives you a creative tool you can reuse endlessly.

The funny thing is, I used to feel completely intimidated by font creation software. It always seemed overly technical and inaccessible. But when I discovered Fontself, a whole new world of creative possibilities opened up to me.

In this class, I’ll show you a simple and approachable way to turn your handwriting into a fully functional font you can install and use on your computer.

We’ll go through:

  • How to prepare your handwritten letters
  • How to import them into Fontself
  • How to adjust spacing and test your font
  • How to export and install your typeface
  • And how to start using it in your creative projects

So you can create as many handmade fonts as you like.

This class is perfect for designers, illustrators, content creators, creative entrepreneurs, or anyone who wants to add a more personal and authentic touch to their visual language.

No previous experience in typography is needed.

By the end of this class, you’ll have your own downloadable font and a new tool to make your work feel more human, expressive, and unmistakably yours.

So grab a pen, your favorite brush, or your iPad, and let’s turn your handwriting into something you can actually type with.

I’ll see you in class.

Hello!
My name is Pamela Calero and I’m a Colombian born - Barcelona based Communication Artist & Visual Storyteller. I give visual form to ideas to simplify projects that think outside the box.

Through the act of externalizing and examining my thoughts, I discovered a passion for transforming abstract ideas and emotions into tangible, visual forms. This passion has evolved into my Creative Services, which aim to distill complex concepts into concise and memorable visual representations. My goal is to find the most effective and compelling way to communicate a message, using the power of imagery to bring ideas to life.

I'd love to connect with you!

1. Introduction: Create Your Own Font: In a digital world where people increasingly rely on the same templates, fonts, generated AI images, and crafted expression is becoming more valuable than ever. So instead of using the same fonts as everyone else, why not create the one that sounds like you? Hi. I'm Pamela Calero, and I'm a creative director and visual artist as someone who deeply values authenticity and visual communication. I've always been fascinated by typography and the emotional power in handwriting. A handmade font can communicate warmth, intimacy, playfulness, imperfection, spontaneity, and character in ways that standard digital fonts simply can't. Whether you're building a brand for yourself for a client, making digital artwork, costume typography instantly creates distinction. It transforms your visual communication into something recognizable and personal. Making hand lettering is incredibly fun. But the truth is, we don't always have the time to create everything from scratch. Turning your handwriting into a font is a one time process that gives you a creative tool you can use endlessly. The funny thing is, I used to be intimidated by typography software. It always seemed overly technical and inaccessible. But when I discovered font self, a whole new world of creative possibilities opened up to me. Welcome to create your own font. Turn your handwriting into a downloadable typeface using Fontself. In this class, I'll show you a simple and approachable way to turn your handwriting into a font you can use on your computer. Go through how to prepare your handwritten letters, how to adjust pain and test your font, how to export and install your typeface in your computer, and how to start using it in your creative projects. So you can create as many fonts as you like. This class is perfect for designers, illustrators, content creators, entrepreneurs, or anyone who wants to add a more personal and authentic touch to their visual language. By the end of this class, you'll have your own downloadable font and a new tool to make your work feel more human expressive and unmistakably yours. So grab your iPad, and let's turn your handwriting into something you can actually type with. I'll see you in class. 2. Class Project: Class project, you will create your own custom handwritten font using Fontself. You will need the Fontself app for iPad, an iPad and Apple Pencil or similar stylus, a computer to install your font on. The goal is not perfection, it's personality. During this class, we'll go over how to create a cohesive handwritten alphabet, tips to make your font readable and expressive, adjusting spacing and character placement, exporting a font file, installing your font on your computer, and using your typeface in a real creative application. Remember, your handwriting already contains a visual tone. This class is about transforming that voice into a creative tool that you can keep using across your branding, your artwork, your social media, presentations, or creative projects. Create your own handwritten font and share a screenshot of a sentence written with it. Feel free to also share screenshots of your process inside the Fontself app. 3. Installing Fontself App: This class, we'll be using the native iPad version of the app. Although Fontself has a desktop version for either Illustrator or Photoshop. The iPad app is by far the easiest and fastest way to start creating your own fonts. Well, there isn't currently a native Android version of Fontself. If you're using an Android tablet, I encourage you to explore alternatives like Fonte. The process will very likely be similar. Fontself is a paid app, but it is a one time purchase, and it's absolutely worth the investment if you enjoy handmade typography or want to create custom fonts for your work. Once you download the app, it will automatically install in your iPad. 4. Creating your Font: Go ahead and open the Fontself app. You'll notice that the fonts I've previously created appear in the MyFonts library. This is a great way to keep track of all your custom typeface in one place. The app introduces several template styles you can choose from such as hand, curl, script, goth, graph, bold, sound serif, or even custom height templates. For this class project, let's start with a hand template so you can turn your handwriting into a font. Go ahead and click on it. You'll notice a template appears on the screen. This acts as a guide you can trace over while creating your letters. You'll also notice extra characters and symbols. These are especially useful if you plan to write in languages beyond English or want a more complete typefacee. If a character is missing, it will simply appear blank when typed later. Notice how you can adjust rush size, roundness, pressure, angle, pen direction. You can also switch between tools like pen, pencil, marker, quill, or calligraphy pen. So I'm aiming for loose and imperfect strokes. Choose the tool that best matches the feeling you want your font to communicate. In my case, I want the font to feel flowy and handmade, almost like a hand lettering. If you make a mistake, don't worry. You can always use the eraser tool to fix part of a letter or erase it completely. As you complete your letters, notice how the phrase at the top automatically fills in. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog is a famous pangram, meaning it contains every letter of the alphabet at least once. This preview is also useful for spotting letters that feel awkward to close together or oddly spaced. Feel free to adjust as needed. Patter. Pattern. Pattern. Pattern. Pattern. And congratulations. You just created your first typeface. And now you're ready to export it. 5. Exporting your font installing it and using it: We're now ready to export your font from Fontself in your iPad to your computer so you can install it. Go ahead and click the Export button on the top right corner. Then click Export Font file, and the app will prepare your font. If you use a Mac computer, you can easily transfer the file through AirDrop. You can also save it to your files or email it to yourself to install it in another device or operating systems, think Windows or Linux. Once your font is on the computer, double click on it. It will open in your font catalog. Click Install Font and Voila, your handmade typeface is now a usable font on your computer. Try it out in apps like pages or word. Keep in mind that some online platforms have limitations. For example, Canva allows custom font uploads only with a pro version. And, of course, you'll also be able to use your font throughout the whole Adobe Suite. Regardless of where you use it, I'd love to see your typeface in action. Share your favorite quote, lyric or phrase written with your custom font and uploaded in the class project. 6. Conclusion: Congratulations. You made it. You now know how to turn your handwriting into a functional font and can create new typeface that feel authentic, expressive, and human made. If you enjoy this class, please upload your project into the class gallery. It doesn't matter if your font is finished or still in progress. Wherever you're at, I'd love to see your process and give you feedback. And if this class helped you, feel free to leave a review so more people can discover an easy, approachable way to create their own fonts. Thank you so much for joining me, and I'll see you next time.
