1. Introduction: Hi, I'm Casey, an artist and creator and someone living with psoriatic arthritis. This is an invisible auto immune disease that changed my life and turned it upside down to say the least. I was grieving the life I thought I'd have battling chronic pain and fatigue and started on a journey searching for a way to express my feelings. When I discovered art became my therapy, my voice, and my healing. Today, I want to share that journey with you through one of my favorite projects, Styrofoam planter heads. This class, I will show you step by step how to turn boring planter heads into stunning planter pot holders. We will turn these planter heads into beautiful painted faces using acrylic paint and adorn them with beautiful tribal head wraps and jewelry. Whether you're here to learn a fun new craft or just to find a creative outlet, you are welcome here because this course is beginner friendly. Let's create something beautiful together, not just something that holds your plants, but something that also shares your story. 2. Chapter 1: Tools: The list of all items I'm going to be using will be in the resources area. 3. Chapter 2 : Preparing the Styrofoam Head: Now we have Ostyr from head to get a pair of scissors and what we are going to do is to puncture the top of the head to create a hole. We are going to do lobotomy on this planter head. It's a little therapeutic. So now we are going to carve out a deep hole on top of this planter head. This is the hardest part, the initial cutting away off the top. But once you start to get deeper into the planter head, it's going to be much easier. Uh, Now we will measure our terracotta pots, which should be 4 ", see if it fits into the planter head. This is what it looks like. Our planter head, this is ready. And now we're going to trim around the top to kind of make it a little bit more uniformed. Don't worry. It's not going to be smooth. You want it to be perfect. Third call. 4. Chapter 3: Water Proofing: So now we are going to start the waterproofing and also the portion where you make the planter head smooth. By putting mudgepodge on the planter head. I use the mat udgePodge to just paint all over and inside the planter head. I am using a wide paintbrush because it just makes everything easier. You can cover a large amount of the surface area with this wide paintbrush. As you can see, we go around the sides and the bottoms, and as I said, you're going to go inside the top of the plant your head as well. 5. Chapter 4.1 : Painting: Now we are going to paint the planter head. So before we start the painting process, we will leave our planter head to dry for 24 hours. And now we are going to paint the planter head in whatever color you fit you choose to paint it. I'm going with more of a skin to and color. And you will use acrylic paints for this. We're going to paint all of the planter head, including the inside of the planter head. Now we are going to allow the planter head to dry. You can use a blow dryer. Don't put it too close to the planter head and blow it to allow it to dry faster so that you can apply a second layer if you want to. As you can see, I chose to use a blow dryer. Now I am applying my second layer. I use the same flat brush that I used with the mudgPod. I just ensure that I cleansed it with water and soap. Now I am doing the bottom of the planter head and I'm using my trusty blow dryer to get it to dry quickly. 6. Chapter 4.2 : Painting The Eyebrows: Now, I'm going to use this eyebrow template to help me to draw the eyebrows on so they look somewhat decent. You can free hand it. You can use either option. This template will be provided in the resources. As you can see, I'm going ahead with cutting it out. I placed it on the plan to head to get the placement right. And you've given me an idea of what it looks like and where I want it to go. Now I'm going to further cut the eyebrows out a Once again, I am checking the basement and the aesthetic of what the eyebrow will look like. Now I am using my acrylic paint pen and using a Paka pen, but you can use any acrylic paint pen. I am putting some dots on the areas where I want the eyebrows to be drawn and where I will connect it. It's a guide for me to know where to drive. You can do this both ways and I will show you both ways that you can achieve this. And you can do this two different ways, and I will be showing you the two different ways that I achieve the eyebrows. As I cut the second eyebrow, I make sure that the stencils match up. So now for this second eyebrow, I am also doing the same points. So when mapping out this eyebrow, I think about the eyes as if they are cut into thirds, and the arch of the eyebrow will be over the middle third of the eye. I am using the stencil as a guide to draw the eyebrow on. This is Method one. And then for the second eyebrow, I want to show you method too. I takes a little work to get the eyebrows in the position that you want them to be in. Now, after I put the points on this eyebrow, I remove the stencil and I am going to connect that free hand with my free hand. Okay. To draw on this eyebrow. I want to remove the stencil from the other eyebrow to see what we have to see if they look somewhat similar and the placement is okay. I think mine is okay. They don't have to be perfect, but you just want them to look somewhat similar and to be on the same level. Now I'm going to use the paint pen to fill in my eyebrow. I'm going to do the same thing here for the second one. From here, you can also fix any flaws, anything to make the eyebrow look as similar as possible. From here, you'll fix any flaws. Take your time. It looks nice. I'm satisfied with this. Giving you another close up look at the eyebrows. 7. Chapter 4.3 : Painting the face: Now I am going to paint the lips on. I will follow the outline of the planter heads lips. Then I fill in the bottom portion. You can use whatever colors you want to paint the eyebrows in, you can use whatever colors you want to paint the lips in. It's up to your artist decision. For the top of the lips, I am forming an M just to give her a more defined cupid bow. And then I fill it in with the red marker. Once again, take your time with this. I'm defining the top of her lips a bit more to balance it out with the bottom of the lip. Again, I made that M shape. Oh, she's looking sassy. She's looking fine. I love it. See? I just takes a steady hand, but it's not hard. It's really not hard. We are going to do the eyelids and if you look closely, the eyes have a lower part, we're going to stay on the top portion of her eyes. 8. Chapter 4.4 : Finishing the face: And I will show you here when I trace the outline of the eyelids. See, I do not go all the way down to the bottom of the eyes. I have an empty error there. Showing that to you again. And now I'm going to fill in the eyelids, the top of the eyelids. Once again, you can pick whatever fun colour you want for her eye shadow. A This is so satisfying. Now she has her eyelids and defined outline to give her prominent eyes. In this, the eyes are going to be closed. Now I'm going to add glitter to her eye shadow. I'm going to be using Mug podge again, and you're going to mix the glitter, whichever glitter color you want to choose and you're going to mix it with the MdgePdge. And paint it onto her eyes. Again, take your time. And now, of course, I'm using a smaller paint brush, so I don't get glitter all over her face. I just wanted to stay right there on the top of the eyes. It can be a pain to remove glitter from the rest of the face. I mean, it won't be anything hard, but, you know, we just want to keep it as clean as possible. And I will be painting several layers of this until I'm satisfied with the level of gold glitter that I have on the eyelight. Until I am satisfied with the amount of shine and glitter added to the eyeshadow. Here I am trying to give you a close I'm trying to give you a closer view of the placement of the glitter. Now I'm going to give her some African tribal prints on her face. Again, this is where you will use your own artistic creation. To create whatever shapes, whatever lines, whatever embellishment you want to put on her face. Also in the resources section, I will give you a guide of the different types of African facial travel marks that you can put on the face. If that's what you choose to do, you can also put rhinestones on her face, pearls, you name it. Whatever you want, you can put on the world's oyster with this one. I like this. I am liking this. I'm going to do some shapes on the sides of her cheeks. As you can also see that the eyeshadow is looking shiny and the mage fudge has dried clear. That's a beauty of Mgepdge. It does dry clear. I added some more marks on the second side of her cheek. Okay. I like this. It is looking nice. A 9. Chapter 5 : Accessorizing : No. So now for the fun part, we will be adding her accessories. I got this headband. And when you get a headband, it has to look like this. It has to go all the way to the back of the head. It can't be those little headbands. You have to have a lot of fabric to work with. Another option is getting just some fabric. A fabric with any pattern, put it around the head, measure it, and then you tie the bow at the top. But I find this to be easier when I get it pre tied like this. Now I'm going to use a hot blue gun to ensure that this headband stays in place. And it also serves as covering up the top of that uneven planter head. So we fold it inward, again, to cover the jaggerd parts of the planter head. So as you know, we're working with styrofoam, so we have to be gentle with it. And sometimes, when you touch it, a piece might fall off. As you can see at the top of my planter head, there's a little flaw right there. But I'm not going to worry about that because it's going to be covered up Anyways. She is looking fine. All right. So now we are going to further go ahead and attach some. Now we're going to go and further attach the base of the head band with the blue ensure that it is solid, that it is set in place and won't come up. In the resources section, I will provide links to these products on Amazon. I am liking everything about the plans ahead. Now I am removing some of the glue that got on it to just gently rub it off. It was hard to not have glue from the glue gen on plant your head, but just rub it off and it will come right up. Now I'm getting ready to add her earrings and we are going to attach it to where you would think her ears would land. I recommend getting bold big earrings so that it gives a more prominent look. This is another reason why you do want the fabric to come all the way to her ears because then you need that space for the earrings. Now, we are going to attach some eyelashes to her to give her a bit more pizzas. I'm going to attach a thin layer of the glue from the hot glugen to the lines of the eyebrow and I will place it right at the base of the eye lid. I'm going to attach the second eye lash and once again, I will be putting the hot glue and a thin layer of the hot glue on the eyelash. I usually get big and bold eyelashes as well because you do want her features to stand out. You just press it in gently to ensure that it is in the right position. We are done. Check out our planter head with so much personality. I love making these planter heads, and I want to see what your planter heads look like. Please share pictures of your planter heads in the section that is provided. I know you're going to love making these. And the finished product is so satisfying. Well done. Thank you for joining me in this class.
