Meet Your Teacher

Hello, I'm Melanie.

I am an animator and co-crealtor of Callipeg.

I studied animation and video games in an Art school in Brussels and I‘be been working in animation software development until now.

My love for animation and technology drove me to create Callipeg with other passionate people and we are so excited to share our work with the animation world and to use this tool ourselves to create our own animations!

I wish to share with you my knowledge about software and 2D hand-drawn animations.

I am also excited to see what the other teachers can share with us here on Skillshare and the projects that the students produce in their learning journey.

Have fun creating !

1. Create animations with the iPad and Callipeg: Hi, my name is Melanie, and I'm an animator and co-founder of Kali peg, a 2D animation app for iPad. In this class, I'm going to show you how to use caddy peg to make your own animations on iPad. We're going to go through every feature in detail from the studio to the Drawing Tools, the colors, layers and animation tools. The imports, exports and backup, how to import images and videos, and how to export and backup your work. Let's start with the first lesson about this studio. 2. The Studio: The studio works like a gallery. You can create shots and store them into scenes. So here are various shots. And the orange ones are scenes containing shots to create a new shops, tug on new shots and change the name. So I'm going to call it my new shots. And you can choose between different process. So here I can choose between the standard HD, YouTube obtaining tp, YouTube 720 P square HD, and layout sheets 200 dpi. Where of course, you can also set the size you want in widths and heights. You can also send the frames per second. So here I'm going to stay at 24. And here you can choose to create several shots at once. So if I want to create three shots, I can also choose to create them right in the studio to put them in a scene. But for now I'm just going to create one here. And it directly opens the shot for me. To go back to the studio. I need to tack on this icon here. And here I can see my new shirt here. So if I want to do some actions with it, I can slide from right to left. And I will be able to rename it here. I can also rename it by double tapping. I like this. I can duplicate it. I can delete it. Yes. I can export it. And it will export a bag file, which is the Kelly bag file, which I will be able to back up somewhere and open it again in caliphate. And I can fix it. So this tool right here is a, I have a corrupted file. If the pixels are corrupted, I can try to fix it like this. And it will dicker up to my shots. If I tap on select, I can do a bunch of actions on several shots or scenes. For example, if I select two shots here, I have the option to duplicate, to create a new scenes for these two shots. Go to exploit. You fight up, down, then everything is unselected. If I tap on a scene. For several scenes, I have one more option which is splitting, which will allow me to extract the shots from the scenes. And I also have the swipe options for the scenes. So for that I can rename duplicates, split the scene, so I glue the shots from the scene and deletes. So let's try to create a scene. I can do is manually by dragging one shot over another, like this. And I can create a new scene here. And this is where it is. So I can go there. I can remove shots from it by dragging to the name here and the arrow. And it will just extract it from the scene. And I can put it back here. Again, see the icon, drop icon here. And it will place my shot back into the scene. So here if I swipe in a speed the scene, I can see my shirts are back here and the scene does not exist anymore. If you want to import an image or a video, tap on boats and you can take a photo or a video with the iPad camera. Go to photo album and pick a photo or video, or go to your fires and select the photo or video you want to import. So now I'm going to delete this new shot. I'm going to show you the interface. 3. The Interface: So here is the Kelly bag interface. So this icon there lets you go back to the studio. This opens the parameters. And this one is the Togo. On the timeline. On the right part you have the different tools. So you can draw with different brushes. You raise. And you see that when you select a tool, it becomes orange. You can transform. Pick a color and choose your colors in the color pile. This icon here is to play your animation. And you can see that here I have 24 so-called By a progression bar. So when it's red, it means that it's computing all the images. And you don't see your animation properly yet. And when it's green, it means that your animation has the correct speed. Now, go ahead and pause it. And here is a canned less area. So here you can zoom in and out and rotate. And you can come back to your initial x2 and rotation by pinching quickly. Like this. If you don't own the canvas to rotate, you can go to the settings, can less and disable rotation of the candidates. And now I can't rotate anymore. What for me? I like when I can rotate, so I'm going to get it back like this. And I can rotate. If you are left-handed, you can switch the interface into a left-handed mode. So here I am in the right handed interface. And if I switched this person, I am in the left-handed interface. So everything that you can control the finger is here. And you can draw here without any tools in a way. But I am right-handed, so I'm going to turn it back to the right-handed interface. Here is a sidebar and it changes according to the tool you are using. If I am in the brush or erase tools, I have the size options. So I can drag up and down to change the size of my brush. So I'm just going to create a drawing here. So I can change the size by dragging up and down. I can also hold my finger down and move my pencil from left to right, right to left, up or down, like this. And if I double tap, I can also enter the value manually. Below that is the opacity slider. So it works just the same. And I can double tap to change the value. Below that you have undo. And redo. What you can also use the two-fingered tab to undo. And the three finger tap to redo. Hold two fingers down and it will open the floating menu, this icon here and clears the drawing. I'm going to draw something. And here I can copy and paste it somewhere else. And when I paste, I have the transformation tool for me to move it before it can be applied. And this icon here is the flip. So here I flip between my first image. Here, I can see it in my second image. And I can go up and create a new image. So if I stay here, I have a third image. And this cross here closes the panel. What is interesting about this panel is that you can move it anywhere you want. I'd like to give it somewhere when I flip to my sheets. 4. The brushes: You have different brushes available by default. Tab on the brush icon to draw and dab a second time to open the brush panel. Swipe from right to left to duplicate or deletes the brush. Tab on the brush to use it. And have a second time to open the settings. At the top there is a branch preview to keep an eye on what to brush looks like. Losing smoothest line. So if I have it on 0, I don't have any smoothing. And if I set it to ten, I can see that's my line is smoothed. The higher value, the higher the smoothing. Spacing says the value of the space between each of the brush. For example, if I set it to 158, I will see dots in my line. You can set the value by double tapping on it. But if you go under 10%, it may affect the performance. So I'm going to draw with different colors. And for now, my colors don't mix together. Going to activate it and sets liberalism stage. And now I can see that the colors blend together. Reinject color will add the current color to the mix. So if I enable it, I will add blue all the time. And we get a lower value. And what brush will act like a traditional brush. So it would add pixels like pigments, and it would blend with the background, like on paper. Let's try with another brush. It's better to use the setting at 99%. So I really have the feeling to draw with a wet brush on paper and keep paint, allow me to keep the color iPad's through when I drew. So if I draw with green here, and now you pass my purple and then light pink, I have a new color here, and I can keep drawing with that color. So I'm going to remove the wet brush so it stops melting with the background. So no, I have this new color here. And I can keep drawing with it. So it's good for creating a pilot and blend the colors together to find the right color. Dry only works if pressure controls opacity is disabled. This parameter only works when you use a brush with a low of St. amino arranged the opacity to ten. I draw with one stroke and I can see that the color overlap. The 14 and dry disabled. I will need a higher Augusti there. You can see that the color blends to itself. Pressure control size means that the modal you apply pressure, the bigger your brush is. The value on the right is the highest value on the size. So if I increase it, I can get an even bigger brush. And if I lower it, I get different pressure values. And on the left is the minimum size of your brush. So if I don't press very much like this, it doesn't make very much difference. So I need to have a bigger difference. So it depends what you want to use your garage full pressure controls opacity has the same settings as the pressure control size. So if I leave it from 0 to 100, it means that the biggest pressure I can apply is 100 opacity. And the lowest pressure is 0. If I lower the highest value. And we get a lower opacity with the maximum pressure. And here, when I apply a low pressure, I don't get a very low pass. Tea. Sip is the tip of your pencil. So right now I'm using a round shape for tip. So it allows me to have a clean round brush. But if I go and see other brushes like SHOFCO, I can see that the tip is different. If I tap on the tip, it opens other options and I can see that's my tape is made of several tips. So when I draw those several tips are printed on the canvas. Cycle defines the order in which those tips are printed. So linear means that the tip will be printed in a linear, older. And random means that the tip will be printed in a random order. And that's how I can get this brush render. You can change the tip of the brush by removing the tip, all the tips that are already there. And by adding your own tips, you can make your own tips by drawing them. Black on white, honest square ratio. The texture is the paper texture on which root rho. So if I draw with a brush without the texture, and I compare it with the enabled texture here. I can see the difference. If I increase the percentage of the threshold. I can remove more pixels. When I draw. You can make your own textures and import them by tapping on the name of the texture here. 5. The shapes: The shapes can be found in the brush panel. At the top of the brush list. By default, you have a free hand shape, which allows you to draw. Say this. If you tap a second time, you get the field freehand shape. And now I can draw a field shape like this. And to get back to the way was just tapped another time and is back to the free-hand. The second one is a straight line. So I can draw lines like this. It doesn't take pressure into account. So if you want smaller lines, just change the size. If I hold one finger down, the line will snap every 15 degrees angle. If I hold two fingers down, the line is drawn from its center. And if I hold three fingers down, the line is drawn from its center and snaps every 15 degrees. There is no second option for the line. The third one is the rectangle. So here I can draw a rectangle. If I hold one finger down, I will draw a perfect square. If I hold two fingers, I will draw a rectangle from its center. And if I hold three fingers, I draw square from its center. If I use another brush, I can see that I will draw the shape with brush. But it's not the case with field shape. So if I tap another time, I will have the Filled Rectangle. And now I cannot draw with the brush. So of course I get the same gestures here with the field shape. The last shape is dealerships console. You have the same gestures for the ellipse. So I can draw an ellipse free like this. And if I hold one finger, I can draw a circle. With two fingers. I can draw an ellipse from its center. And three fingers, a circle from its center. And a second time for the field shape, which does not take the brush into account. 6. The Colors: You can access the colors by tapping on the color circle at the top right of the interface. There I have the chromatic wheel where I can choose the hue of the color and the saturation and brightness in the triangle. And other chromatic real, I have a palette which I setup. So if you don't have anything there, you will be able to add a pellet from the palette tab. And under there I have the history where I can get my past colors. The second tab is the slider tab. There I can control the values of red, green, blue, hue, saturation, and brightness. I can also copy paste the hexadecimal value here. And on every tab I have the history colors. The third tab is the pellet tab. So here I can create pilots with the plus. I can add a color by tapping on the circle here. I can delete by holding the pencil or finger on the color tab on the name to rename the palettes. And slide from right to left to select or deletes. So if I select, I will place my palette Under the chromatic will. This way, I can quickly choose an add new colors like this. When I want another palette, I simply slide and select it. Now, I'm going to cut our my character. To do so, I need to create a new layer. I'm creating a new drawing layer by tapping on the brush here. And I can extend the timeline by holding the horizontal bar here. So that's where I'm going to place the colors of my animation. I'm going to rename it by double tapping on the name corners. And I'm going to place it under the line. Does told drag the layer to move it. So here I can create new sheets to colour on them. But I can do it more quickly by duplicating the line there with the same structure. So I'm going to delete this layer. I'm holding the pencil on the menu here, and I drive my pencil to this icon here, which is duplicate without drawings. And now we have the same layer here without the drawing on the character. So I'm going to drag it down here. And we name line color. And now I don't have to worry about creating a new sheet every time. I drag the timeline down so I keep only the slayer some safe, but I can also block the liner year like this. Selects this one. And now I don't have the risk of carrying on the wrong layer. So I'm choosing my color. And I can either draw a layer like this or I can feel with a double tap and sets the tolerance here to feel the character Mole quickly. Going to choose another color. And I can see that here I have a hole in my life. So I'm just feeling it. I can feel my animation very quickly like this. I can also flip with the flip here. So here are the flip is set to move one image at a time. But if I go to my parameters, I can set its on the sheets. So now we can just go from sheet to sheet. I can also use three fingers. So I'm dragging three fingers up and down to flip through the sheets. You can use the beaker here too. So just to drag your pencil or finger over the color, you want. Any TV sets in the current color. 7. The Selection & Transformation: The selection and transformation tools can be found in the same place. This icon changes according to what you are using. So here I am in selection mode. So I can select the area I want to transform. This is the free hand selection, but I can also use the rectangle selection. To Deselect. I simply tap on the Selection tool. So here I select the head and tap on the transformation tool. And now I can move it around and resize it. If I want to reset the transformation, I click on this icon here and everything is resets. To transform, I can use nine handles. So I can transform horizontally. Vertically. Both are the same time. And I can rotate. If you want to keep the ratio when you're transforming, hold one finger down and you will be able to transform while keeping the ratio. The first icon flips horizontally. This one flips vertically. This one real plies and transformation that has already been made. I'm going to select everything and transform and accommodation link this. And I apply. And now you fire reapply a have the same transformation, the same rotation applied. If I use the transformation tool without selection, it will transform every pixel on the canvas. So here is the reset of the translation. Cross cancels the transformation. And the last one is the quality of the transformation. So if I really increase the transformation, you can see that I have different results. If I have a low-quality, medium quality, and high quantity. So the higher the quality is, the mole, the lines will be smoothed. And so as you can see, I can also transform. We have Varney my fingers, and it will always keep the ratio. And I can reset that transformation with a pitch. If I want to apply a transformation. On the whole animation, I just need to select all my sheets, make this, and Apply. And now I can see that's my whole animation has been transformed. When I transform, I can also use values. So I just have to transform a little bit here and tap on the size here and then go and I gets a small panel where I can change the values. So here the values are locked. And if I move them by dragging from left to right or right to left, I can see that I can transform y keeping the ratio. And if I unlock, I will only transform vertically or horizontally. And again reset here. And I can also move the angle from 0 to 180 degrees. No selection can also be used with brushes. Sir, here, if I draw, here, it is limited by the selection. And I can deselect made this. Okay. 8. The layers: There are two types of layers, the drawing layer and the video layer. You can draw in the drawing layer. But in the video layer, you cannot draw anything. The drawing layer contains sheets. The sheets are drawings made of one or several frames. You can rename the layer by double tapping on it. This is where you control the opacity of the layer. Drag left or right to decrease or increase the capacity. Double-tap to type it manually. Onion skin allows you to see the drawing before and after the current sheet. You can change the settings of the onion skin. In this tab. Set the color of the frames before and after the current drawing. Choose the number of drawings you want to display before or after your current drilling. You can set the opacity with sliders, which allow you to see what you are doing directly. The magnet sets the xin behavior to one another. It is enabled by default. If I disable it. The sheets moon stick together, I won't be able to pool the next sheet by decreasing the sheets. But if I enable it, she'd stick together. If I hold the magnet, it sticks all the sheets together. Hold on the menu icon to access more options. The delete icon, delete the layer. The alpha log allows you to draw on the existing pixels. That way, I can change the color of my line. Very easily. Disable it to be able to draw anywhere else. The lock locks your layer and it protects it from being edited. This icon will select or deselect all the sheets. And this icon Merge the layers. So you need to select several years before to be able to merge them. So I'm going to create another drawing layer. And then I draw sheet. Now I can see that these two drawings are on separate layers. So isolate them by dragging from left to right like this, and they become blue. And now I can merge them. And I can see that both drawings are now on the same layer, this icon, cookies layer. And then I can pace it with this icon here. And I can also paste it into another shot. Here. I can duplicate with drawings, which means that I duplicate this layer exactly as it is with the drawings inside. But if I choose Duplicate without drawings, I have the same layer with the same structure, but with empty sheets. This icon allows me to see only my current layer. So if I have another layer, and I choose this option, I will only see my current layer. And the last one enables or disables the visibility of the layer. So as I said before, you can't draw in the video layer. You can import videos from the camera and photo album, all the files. When you invoke the video, it will adapt to the frame rate of the shots. So here, 24 frames per second. The video layer contains clips of videos. So you can import several videos in the same video layer. And those clips can be handled almost the same way as sheets. For the drawing layer. You can change the opacity value under layer the same way as the drawing layer. You can directly import your files with this icon here. The magnets here works the same way as for the drawing layer. And you can access more options with the menu here. So you can delete, selects, copy, duplicate, show only this layer, and disable the layer. When you duplicate a video layer, you duplicate it with the content. You don't have the possibility of duplicating without the contents because it wouldn't be useful anyways. When you have several layers, you can drag them up and down to move them in the pile. 9. The Timeline: In the timeline, you have what we call sheets. They are like sheets of paper containing each one drawing which can be exposed on several frames. To create a sheet. Double-tap somewhere. Or you can just draw any Twitter create a sheet automatically. You can move through your sheets by flipping, like this, by dragging the pencil or the finger, right and left on the timeline. Or you can flip with three fingers. All by opening the floating menu with two fingers and dragging up and down on the Flip icon. To select a sheet double tab on it. You can expand it by dragging the arrow on the rights like this. So I can see up there that it tells me how many frames are exposed in the current sheet, in the currents drawing. Instead of doing it manually, I can set the timing of the other frames by selecting them on. To do so, I doubled up and drag to select all my sheets. But I can also select them with this option here. And now I drag up and I have more options here. So when I go over an option, I earned iterates and access its own options. So to set the timing of all my sheets, I drag up and choose set timing, and now I decide how many frames I want in my drawings. So each drawing is exposed for six frames. Tap anywhere to deselect. As you may have noticed, when a sheet we selected somewhere, my timeline becomes green. So if you are unaware of that, something is selected in your sheets, in any of your layers somewhere. If your timeline is green, it means that something is selected. The selection can allow you to play only a portion of your animation. Select only these two sheets. It will play only these two. And if your animation doesn't move, it may mean that only one sheet somewhere is selected. When your sheets are selected, you can either go to the Options or move them somewhere else. If you just want to move your sheets and you don't want to be annoyed by all these options. Go over the cross here and it hides the options. You can then move your sheets without father. The sheets can be moved across layers, but they can't be moved over a video layer. The same way a video layer cannot be moved over a drawing layer. Let's go over the different options. These deletes the sheet. This option splits the selected sheets. So if I select my sheets and ice cleaned it in, wants, my cheetahs become seeks sheets, but has kept the drawing in only one, the first one of them. This allows me to create blank sheets in-between my drawings. For example, I have four drawings here, four sheets. I was pleased them in three. So because may sheets contained six frames. By creating blank sheets of three, I just divided them by two, and I have one blank sheets in between. Every sheet, which allows me to create in-betweens are breakdowns very easily. Said, timing defines the number of frames contained in each sheet. You can set your own number by releasing on the clock here. Create imagery and structure automatically adds a blank sheet in-between your sheets. So now I can see that I have a blank sheet between all of my patients and no new sheet was created after the last sheet. This option inverts the order of the sheets. It will be clearer if I add numbers here. And now it starts by four. Copy content, copies the content of their sheets. Now if I create a new sheet, I can paste the content. This option bleeds to choose other options. Here I can duplicate the sheets with the content, with the drawings, and I can duplicate them without the content. So if I duplicates with the content, it will just adds the same sheets after my selected sheets. If a duplicate without the content, I will have the same structure after my sheets. When you duplicate the sheets, you can directly choose where you're going to put them. Just follow the paths they go to duplicate and move away to drop them somewhere. Thank you. And they will be placed wherever you choose. This option allows you to import an image from your camera, your photo album, or your files. The paste option and the option can only be made on one sheets. You can't import several images up once. To navigate in a timeline, use your pencil or finger and drag left to right to move in the timeline. Use two fingers to zoom in and out and pinch quickly to reset the view. Make the pinch the inverted way to see all your sheets within the timeline. You can use the same gestures with the video layer. Double-tap on a click to select it. You can then decrease or increase the length of the clip. You can split the clip by cutting through it with a pencil. You can also do it on the drawing sheets. In the drawing layer. Select multiple clips with a double type and drug and access the options by dragging upwards. These option deletes the clip. This option sets the playbacks. You can slow the speed of the video like this. Or you can speed it up like this. 100% is the normal speed of the video. To a 100% is twice as fast. For a 104% times 50.5%, 25 one-quarter of this. Duplicate with content, simply duplicate the video clip and places it after the current clip. I can also choose to place it anywhere I want. And finally, the cross hides the options and you can move it anywhere you want. 10. Import & export: From the studio, you can import from the camera and photo album or from your files. If you want to import a peg file, which is a caddy peg file, it needs to be in a location on my iPad. It can't be inverted from the iCloud Drive. When you invert an image, the shot created inherits the dimensions of the image. And when you import a video, the shelter inherits the dimensions and frame rate of the video. Swipe from right to left to export a thick file and save your caliphate projects. You can drag and drop images in split view. And I can drag and drop my images one after the other. Favorites. To export your shots, go to the settings and exploits sequence will export either a video or an image sequence. In this case, I have kelly Peg as formats which will export a peg file, which is a callee peg file. Projects. Under the preview, I have the short size, which is the dimensions of the shots, the FPS, which are 24 frames per second, the storage left is the storage left on my iPad. That way, I know if I have enough space to explore these short or not. Estimated size is the estimated size of the exported file. In that case, the callee peg peck file is estimated to be 22 megahertz. But keeping in mind that this is an estimation and it will always aim higher than the actual result to make sure that you have enough storage left to export it. If I choose the type as image, I will export a single image, which I can use by dragging the slider here. And I can choose to export the background or not. While in this case the background is not visible because I have a layer background. But if BI and my character, I have an empty space. I can choose to export a transparent background or a colored background and will export a PNG sequence. I can choose to export the background or not. And to export with the structure. Which means that I will have a folder containing as many folders as there are layers. If I explore the structure, I will have 25 folders with their respective images. If I choose to export one image per sheet, it means that only the drawings will be exported. If it is disabled, then every single frame will be exploited as an image. The MP4 export these an MP4 video. In this case, you can choose to change the frame rate of the video, which is also possible in the GIF format, which is give image an animated image. By exporting again, you can choose to export without the background. The JSON format creates a file that can be imported into another program within import scripts. So you will need to make a script for the destination program in order to import this file into it. 11. Save & backup: Kelly bag saves the shot you are working on automatically every 30 seconds. It also saves it when you go out in the studio. So if you want to make sure your shots is saved, just go out in the studio before you exit the app. Your shots backups are located in a location on my iPad in the folder Kelly bag in the backups. There you have all your shots backups, which you can import directly from Cali pig. You can change the number of backups you have in your folder, in the settings, general and maximum number of backups kept. So here I have five, but you can have three or, or even ten if you want. But just make sure that your backup time interval is big enough, but not to be. So you can have the time to get to your backup before it gets rewritten. So I think the best thing is 15 or 30 minutes depending on your workflow and what you are ready to lose if there is a problem. Keeping in mind that decreasing the number of backups does not delete the extra backup fires. They will still be in your virus folder. And if they take too much space, just delete them manually. Backups are jpeg files. So you can, I told them like you would a big file by typing an import files, go to location on my iPad. Kelly PAYG, backups and load the desired backup. The file called Settings is the configuration file. If you delete it, Kali pectins back to the initial configuration of the interface. You can lose custom brushes, anything that's related to the interface logs are there to check if there is any problem with your files. You can delete the old ones. But if you ever encounter a problem, keep your logs on hand and contact Kelly bag and send us your files with the problem you encountered. And we will try and help you. If you think the app takes too much space. You can clear the cache. In general, clear all cash, which will also clear the undoes.
