But like every beginners, it was also frustrating to me at first: keeping my upstrokes thin and my downstrokes consistent.

"Practice makes progress." This became my mantra as I improve myself on lettering. I learned to just enjo... See full profile

1. Introduction: Hi brush band, I am Arctic are also known as seven versus strokes. Here, an Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. I'm a lettering and water color art-based from the Philippines. Welcome back to another ischial shy class. After MY brush calligraphy cores, I felt that there is something a wants to do more, something to focus on and something to expound. I feel like capital letters in brush that there he doesn't get the attention that it deserves. Therefore, this class entitled conquered the capitals. How to Write uppercase letters in brushed lettering will help you to get a holistic understanding towards the capital letters. Did you know that there are basic shapes that you can practice to make reading the capital letters are not comfortable to you. Just like an hour basic brush lettering class. We will be at a solid foundation here to fully equip you as you form the uppercase letters in traditional or copper plate approach. And also walk you through a step-by-step process on writing capitalists in modern style, which will encourage you to experiment and just create any style that you want. There will also be a demonstration of me writing names from a busy to give you more ideas on how you can incorporate these letters in new lettering projects. People love seeing their names hand-written, beautiful thing. And it's also good to receive something personalized, ripe, and assurance of a more experts you will bloom as you learned from the base class. Let's concrete lepers together. 2. Capital Basic Strokes: For this class, I'll be using a small tip brush pen. This is dependable food touch brush band which is may go to Japan when I'm doing brush lettering that she can use whatever size of brush pen that you already have. In the resources section, you will find free blank guidelines that are suitable for both small and large deep brush pens. The First Style of uppercase letters that will create is based on copper plate or a traditional style. But don't worry because we're not going to be super is cheek with the rules here. As we know that copper plate follow certain rules like the 55 degree angle. You see that this slant line here on my worksheet is around ten degree angle because that's where I'm comfortable writing. So if you write in a much more slanted angle, feel free to do so. As a modern calligraphy artist, I find more enjoyment when I am free to do whatever that is comfortable to me. And I want you to do the same. Just do what works best for you. And that's the beauty of modern calligraphy. Let's just do a quick recap in doing calligraphy. Remember that all the downstrokes are thick, which is achieved by applying heavy pressure. And all the abstracts are thin, which is achieved by applying just a light pressure. And like how we study the lowercase letters, if you have taken a basic class, we form them is stroke BY stroke. So it's important to lift the pen after each keystroke. And the same with the uppercase letters. It's best to build a solid foundation of basic is chokes. Knowing how to create the drills and building your muscle memory will better prepare you for success in writing beautiful capital letters. Let's take a look at the capital is Pham. This is also known as the line of universal beauty. Here is my Cap Height, the waistline, and the bees lame. You start from the top with the thinnest choke, gently press hard to make fake is choke and they slowly release the pressure to make a thin is choke again. So let's try this one more time. Another thing that we can do for this stroke is to add in that. So we're going to extend the thinnest joke a little bit higher, vein thick, thin and added that at the end of this choke. If we observe this clearly, this rectangle shape at the middle is parallel to the slam planar following. So that's where we want to put the shaded part of the capital is stem. And these two sides are just being strokes. Next we have the hairline upstroke. For the capitalist spam. We moved our bend downwards. Now for the hairline stroke, we're going to move upwards. If you feel shaky doing thinnest strokes don't be concerned because our goal is never perfection. Already goal is to enjoy the process and celebrate the small progress as we keep on practicing. So the hairline upstroke is starts from the baseline and slightly curved up just like that. It doesn't necessarily have to be at the slant line. You're following like this. It's smart off outside this land line and crossing it. If this is my diagonal line, then the hairline stroke will overpass this lane. You also want to main theme, this smooth curve and not like this. You see their sin and cheery that forms an angle. So we don't want to form this kind of sheet. So we move on now to the compound curve. You are familiar with this shape because we also use this on our lowercase letters. But for capital letters will use this as an entrance is choke. I just used the cap hype and the wasteland here. We can use these four letters, h and King. We start from the waistline within upstroke, applying heavy pressure and then release the pressure and come back up with the thin apps joke. This is how we normally do it for lowercase letters, but for capitals, we want to make it a little narrower. So there, this is too wide and this is better. You want to make this a little bit narrower because this is just an entrance is true for this letters. Make sure that these lines are parallel with each other to achieve a consistent loop. Another thing to remember is don't meet the shade to think. We don't want to overpower the shading here of the capital is stem when we connect them together. Moving on, we also need to practice different and transit strokes for our capital letters. The first letter is like a coil or a spring. This curve here exceeded above the cap height. But you can choose to stay on your cup. Hi, just make the first curve and lethal is smaller too. Later on we can adjust its size when we already attach them to their corresponding letters. But for now we just want to focus on how to form the sheep. Not these live. I'm starting theme and then forming an indirect and curl around. It doesn't have to be perfect, but we want to aim for an oval-shaped to make the library sleep more elegant. Also, I'm not, starting with the thick is true like this. So this part is started with a heavy pressure thick is true. While this one is started as being a stroke. Stroke first. As you curve at illegal shade and curl around. Next we have the horizontal see sheep. We start from the BOP. Aim for an oval shape as you move dependent and left at the lethal shade or thickness and then go back to the top. We bin is true. Again, don't start with a heavy dance, true? We see the difference between them. So we have, again, the shaded part is at the left side and this part that comes up is beam. Will also practice this sheep that is quite similarity the coil, but this time, instead of curbing at the end, will move horizontally with a slight curve like that. We're going to use these for the letters F. And again, we don't want to start with a heavy pressure downstroke. And lastly, we have the oval shape. We start from the top with the famous stroke. And as you move your way towards the middle, apply heavy pressure leaves before reaching the baseline and then close the oval shape. So here is where our shaded part is pleased and we start from the top. As you can see, sometimes I also have difficulty in closing, may always shapes perfectly and that's okay. Just keep on trying. So bare for the oboe shape, we don't want to start with the very thickest stroke like this. This one looks a lot nicer as compared to when we started with the thickest strokes. So we have fake. And before reaching the base lame, release the pressure and maintain that pressure until you close the loop. You can do this as an exercise or warm up. Feel a row of each strokes and you'll be more comfortable doing the capital letters in traditional is paying. 3. Capitals A, M, N: In this video, I'll be demonstrating how to form each uppercase letters is step by step. A group them into their similar is stroke so that it will be easier for you to be familiar with a common sheets. You can choose to follow along as I do them or watch me first. The first group of letters that we have are the letters E, M, and M. Here is my cup hide, my waistline. And the baseline for the letter E, B start with hairline upstroke with a dot, followed by a downstroke. So this part is not a full pressure downstroke. If I do that separately, we have theme and then heavy downstroke. So it's not full pressure then stroke. We have theme park here as compared to this. So theme. And then it's just like an imperfect thick is stroke for me. But of course in copper babies style, you have to be able to do this perfectly. Okay? So continuing the letter e from this point will create sort of like an oval shape that will cross the hairline stroke. And finishing at this point, I think this is going to low at the baseline. So let me just say that one more time. So here I am going to start the loop a little higher from the baseline so that it won't look out at this point, just like what happened here next. So so we start at least from this point. You can also choose to add the dad after you've finished for me the letter E. Now let's do the letter M. We have hairline upstroke with a dot, followed by a V-shape. But take note that the bottom part is not point d. It still has some nice curve to it. So it's not really like a point that Vichy. After that, we'll finish it with a downstroke. The end to the theme is true. Another variation we can do is to add a curve to the end of this shape and not just a straight line. So we'll copy this group from the hairline upstroke. Let's try that. Then. Add the finishing is choke. I think that looks better. The letter N is starts with the hairline stroke with a dot. And then stroke that also has occurred in that not just a straight line. So if I'm going to isolate this part, it should look something like this. And this ends with a thin apps to. Here's the hair lameness joke we did earlier. And just attach this two strokes together. From this point. At the famous true. This one doesn't have a species as compared to this. We want to have space in between them. So you can also modify base into jazz and upstroke without either of the two can be done. And that would be your personnel preference. 4. Capitals B, P, R, U, X, Y: Next group are the letters B, p, r, u, x and y. The b starts with the capital is dam with a dot. And then we'll use the coil shape and trans is choke crossing over the stem. So you can pause and leave depend first before continuing with the lower portion of the beam will add a small loop at the center that extends to an indirect over like this. And we also want to keep that these two lines are crossing each other and not just connecting them together. And as I mentioned earlier, the shades here should not be as thick as the shape of your capital in stem. Let's try one more time. If you are comfortable enough, you can make this part as single is true. It takes some practice to get this but just be patient. Letter B might be a little easier because it's just like the letter B. They have similar forum. For the latter is still the same process lake letters b and b. And then you can stop first from this point and then add at the end. So this part right here is doing is true. The letter U is start with the coil shape that continues to a heavy band stroke and come back when the stroke is a larger version of an under during a stroke. As you cannot be the thickest stroke want reach the cap height. It's just a slightly below a letter X will have more curved versus choke. Followed by a thin is true. You can also make this a bit thinner. Make this one. And you might be thinking that this might seem an incorrect way of forming a famous true because we started from the top. But there are some cases that we need to break the rules to do three things, strokes easily. So this is just like a very been leathery seen, less than this group is the letter y. So the coiling stroke will continue to an undertone shape, just like how we did with the letter U, finished by the capital is stem. And as you can notice, the capital is spam did not start from the top. It's a bit lower. You can also see that in the first example, I have the entrance is true just in-between the cap height and the waistline. While the second example, I have exceeded the Cohen she. And that's up to you, which looks more appealing to you. Here. I'm just showing you how it looks like when you just make the coil shape in say the cap height and waistline, as well as the overall is starting a stroke of the letter y. Just in case you prefer that. 5. Capitals C, G, L, S: Moving on to the next group, we have letters C, G, and S. I form the letter is C in one single stroke is starting with a horizontal oval shape loop and finish by another indirect oval. She, if he can notice, I did not put shade on the horizontal. C is stroke here. Edges keep it. So you can do that on modern calligraphy. You have all the freedom to choose whatever works best for you, as long as you know the foundation, then you can definitely break the rules after the letter G will start just like the letter e, c, and it will continue to an undertone is choke, and then end with the capitalist stem. That it does have to start from the top to somewhere around 80%. You can also make your own one's narrower or closer with each other, like so. If you want to make all the entrances stroke theme, feel free to do that. Next we have the letter L. This can be formed with one single stroke. Also. From the entrance is choke. Create a loop. Then perform the capitalist spam that will continue to another is small horizontal Look at the baseline. And then it ends with the theme is true. And less for the group, we have the letter S, which is simply like how we did the letter L. Just finish it with a dot. In this example, I have a shade on the entrance is true. While under next example, edges keep it thin. 6. Capitals F, T, I, J: Let's form the letters F and B. For the letter f, We start with the capitalist spam, but this time, instead of starting from the top, we can start a little bit lower. Then we have this kind of entrances choke that starts with indirect or will that goes into a horizontal line with a curve. And then we add this is choke that process, the capital is stem. You can also choose to connect these two strokes together instead of having a space in between them like what we did in here. For the crossbar, just make a very thin is stroke with a loop like so. To create the letter e t, just simply do this two strokes. Next we have the letters I. Start with the capitalist stem, followed by another keystroke that we will attach from this point. So we have a small loop there. And causes over the first is true. So the shade here is quite as big as the capitalist stem. Also makes sure that you have a nice curve at the end of fishes choke. So it will look more graceful instead of just ending it with a straight line. The letter G is nearly identical to the letter i, but the capitalist stem will continue to add. Descending is family. For this part. These two strokes don't live close together, so let's modify the exit is true. And maybe we can adjust this a little bit. Or you can also make the descending is stem loop and little bit longer too. So this one is the best for me, but she can do the previous examples that I have shown earlier. 7. Remaining Letters: Next we have them debtors, h, k, and z. He starts with a compound curve followed by the capitalist stamp. And then we'll start from thin distro continuing to an ascending in stem loop. To create the third stroke, simply start with the thin strobe and extend it to an ascending is stem-loop that finishes with an undertone is true. For the letter K will just have this single stroke like how we would write it in cursive except the shaded part. So if I'm going to isolate this area, it should look like this. For the shaded part, if DES and have the BS stake as the capitalist stem. Letter Z begins with the compound curve. Then capitalist stam that loop around and D with a descending. Let's try this part alone. I like to extend my descending is stem-loop going below this line. Or you can maintain the height of the descender line if that's what you're comfortable doing. Ok, let's now form the letters O and Q. Begin. We'd have fun over that continues with another loop inside and we'll add another is stroke that is a slightly thick, but don't make it as thick as the shading in this open for the letter q. Just repeat the process and then just add this little pink feel. Four letters, V and W. We start with a compound curve, followed by a capitalist stem. Oops, I added the curve at the end, which should not be there. So let me just try again. Compound curb, capitalist spam and the hairline upstroke. So that's how we form the nether v in traditional style. The process is similar when creating the letter w, but we'll just add another set of capitalist stem and Harry lane upstroke. It's like two V strokes at batched together. We don't want to have an edge on this part. If you're having a hard time keeping the capitalist stem is smooth, you can show them the exit is trope of your compound curve like this, and then attach the capitalist stem. So this may be easier for you. The remaining letters are D and E. I like to form the letter D in one single stroke, beginning with the capitalist stem. Before I reached the base line, there is a small horizontal or go up and curl around here. So this lines can also cross each other like this. The letter E begins with a shape that looks like a spring, and the end point has a nice inward curve to whip vastly we add this is choke similarity. The letter O for the end part. We can make it a lethal is smaller so it would fit this lower portion of the letter E. And that's better. There you have it. The uppercase letters in copper plate or a traditional style. Remember that it doesn't have to look perfect. The style is just based on copper plate, but when it actually following all the rules required. Instead, the approach gives us more freedom to enjoy the process and embrace the mistakes. 8. Modern Style Capitals: For the modern style of uppercase letters, there are so many ways that you can form them and you can also come up with their own style writing them. Sometimes a do it just like how I learned it with very safe and just supply the thin and thick strokes. Although there are cases that they break those roots, as the saying goes, learn the rules to break the routes. For the letter E. We can start with Ben and then make this kind of sheep. Then adjust either downstroke that is slightly slanted. Remember, you can cross two thin lines or one thing, and one thing, but not too thick lines. For the letter B is start with thin, loop around and thick. Then just for this part like how you would write the B. Having this extended Kirby lane. For a letter is C. We can add simple flourish like this. In letter D, we can start with faint upward curve, followed by a dance troupe. And then finish choke, fake and add some curve crossing over this thick line. As you can notice, I'm just applying the thinnest stroke whenever a go up and when going down, I will apply heavy pressure. Let's do the letter E. We have thin, thick. And again, the letter F will look like this. We have upward curve, downstroke. And for the horizontal line, we have Phanish joke with a curve and add this loop. So let R G, B go up thin, thick, lift up your band. Heavy pressure and cross-over, that's choke. Just remember that. Don't cross through thick lines in any style that you will be creating. Next we have the letter h. Let's just repeat. This is choke similar to the B, added bounced show with a little curve or just a straight length that's up to you. And just add the crossbar. This kind of letter i is what we usually see, especially an Instagram. But when you look at it alone, it looks like a lowercase letter L. But when you use it on a sentence like I am, I will like that. You will recognize that this is a capital letter I. So here I'm just going to start with the heavy downstroke that extends to an ascending is stem-loop. Four letter g. I. Just use the cursive style and may give just rounder like that. Networking is as simple as this. So to create a modern letter L is start with a thin upward curve, fake downstroke. Then add this at the bottom. That's just a thin line with the curve at the end. The capital letter M will use this entrance is choke, followed by an overturned and a compound curve where the exit is stroke finishes only until the waistline. Okay, we now move on to letter N. We can start with base and then, then up, down and thin again. That's why it's really important to be familiar with the basic shapes where the transition, because you can use that to create different styles of lettering that you want. Now we have the letter O will create this shape like a coil going to the left and then finish it like so. For modern letter p, we can simply make it like this. And same with the letter Q, will form an oval shape with a PLL at the bottom. Now let's try the letter r. Let's vary our entrance is choke and a little curve. A downstroke. Then just add the next ships. Moving on, we have the letter S and just do it like a cursive. So we have a small loop. Think is stroke, and then cross faint lines to the curve at the end. That IT is as simple as this. We have the letter u as a bigger version of two undertraining strokes. To make the letter V and little mothering is start with the loop and continue up to this choke. You can make your letter w like this one. And your letter x, as simple as this. Once you master the thin end, thickest strokes, forming letters will be more natural to you. So I really encourage you to build your muscle memory and practice your ideals. So there's me let their way. And for the letter z, we have this is slanted dance stroke, followed by this curvy descending is family. That said, explore and experiment with other styles. Don't forget to have fun. 9. Class Project: In the first part of this video and just demonstrating names from a to Z. Remember that you don't have to think too much whether you need to connect the capital letter to the next letters. Some letters look grid-connected together, while others seem to be more awesome and playful. If we just leave them separated. You can get more ideas as you watch me write means here in alphabetical or other. When writing with capital letters, I have no formula. I usually just go with the flow. But if you're not yet comfortable writing with the capitals, using pencil can be of great help in planning out their composition. So don't be afraid to try and try. And since you've come up with the layout that you're satisfied with. Yeah. Okay. Now let's move on to the class project. We will use the capital letters we learned here to write our names of a family member or a close friends. Often on my Instagram account, I receive a lot of messages where people request meet their needs. I guess it's really delightful to see your name handwritten so beautifully. And it's also a great way to practice with capital letters. And B rating may mean first with the copper plate is style. And then I will also show with written and modern style capital letters. As you can see in the modern style, I did not connect the capitals. And the next letter is of my mean. Just play around with how you'd want it to be. Let's try each country. For example, the Philippines. Just like the letter p. It doesn't really have to connect to the next level. Now, it's your turn to upload their artworks in the project section of this class. Or share your works on Instagram or Facebook. Don't forget to tag me at seven branches strokes. And you can also use the hashtag, Learn with mary Carr and really excited to see you conquer the capital letters. 10. Final Thoughts: How is your experience with the capital letters? A hope that you've learned a lot from this class to be. Remember that this is just the beginning of your creative journey. The real challenge is starts the moment you decide to try. So do it, continue what we've started. The capitals have lots of surprises. Rob in a box, please within you. All that's needed is the decision, the turkey legs story into its next chapter. If you've enjoyed this class, please don't forget to leave a review as I will truly appreciate that. And if you're not yet following the unskilled share and see they're following me now so that you'll be notified every time I upload a new class. Create, inspire, and how fun. Fill the world with beautiful raping. I see you in the next class.
