About This Class

Let's sketch some butterflies with charcoal pencils!

Charcoal is one of the simplest and most affordable mediums to sketch and draw with. In this class, I'll share with you how to sketch three different styles and positions of butterflies by following a simple process that is most suitable for beginners and intermediates, so you're welcome to join the class even if you've never used charcoal pencils before.

I've selected butterflies for this class because they're easy to draw and you can get creative with your own choices and they're also perfect for beginners and those who haven't sketched with charcoal before.

The course is divided into different videos for each butterfly and each step, so you can follow the process and get started on your own drawing as you watch the class.

I hope to see you inside the class and let's draw together for the next hour!

1. Welcome to charcoal drawing for beginners.: Hi and welcome to relation Art Studio. In this class I'm going to show you how you can use charcoal to draw butterflies and introduce you to the basics of drawing with charcoal pencils. You're welcome to join the class if you are a beginner or an intermediate, or you simply have an interest in drawing with charcoal. Inside this course, I will be drawing three different butterflies using the same process of pencil first and then cold sketching and drawing. So I've selected butterflies because they are easy to draw and you can get really creative with your own choices. And they're also perfect for beginners. And those who haven't used charcoal pencils before. Art has always been my favorite way to escape from the busy work life. And sketching using simple and affordable mediums is one of the best ways to express emotions and the stress from the daily workload. I've been into art since the age of five and I continued to grow my practice every day. Inside this course, you will find everything you need from the list of equipment to the process steps and easy to follow sketching tutorial. So you can start working as you follow along with me. I've also broken down the steps into multiple videos so you can find it easy to begin practicing calls catching as you watch the videos. In the end of the class, I preferred a little class project for you that you can find under the Project and Resources section in case you are interested in participating and sharing your work with me and other students, either for inspiration or for feedback. If you're interested in sketching with charcoal pencils, join me on this class and let's draw together for the next hour. 2. List of equipment for this class.: Alright, so the equipment that we need for this class is first a sketchpad. I always go for the size A4. I like this size for my own drawings. But if you have a different size available at home, then you can use it as well. Then we have pencils. It's important to use pencils when you are a beginner before you start drawing where the charcoal, because it will be easy for you to create the first sketch and then delete it later with an eraser. And then you can move on to drawing. Because it's a little bit difficult to clean mistakes with charcoal. Of course, mistakes could happen when you are drawing the first sketch, especially if you're not happy with it. So I highly recommend getting a pencil, which is also the process that we're gonna be using in this class. Then I have charcoal pencils. So as you can see, the first one I have here is hard charcoal pencil. I honestly don't really rely on hard charcoal that much. It's very difficult to draw with and to clean States. I highly reliant on the soft or the medium. So if you do not have charcoal pencils yet, I highly recommend to go for the soft or the medium, and those are the ones that we'll be using in this class. Then I have a pencil sharpener right here. It's also nice to have one during the class because you will be using it multiple times, especially when you want to draw some thin lines. Then we have this charcoal eraser. So it's similar to the normal one, but it's much better for cleaning charcoal. And it helps you with creating details similar to the ones that are here on my cover. And then the final thing here is this piece of charcoal. So this material is similar to the ones that you find inside the pencils right here. But it is a bigger piece. So in case you want to create some large areas with charcoal like this one right here on the cover as well, then you can use a piece of charcoal instead of spending a longer time on drawing with a pencil. But if you do not have this one, do not worry because I will rarely used inside the class. However, if you have it at my speed up the process for you. This is for the equipment and let's move on to the next video and get started on sketching with a pencil. 3. Sketching the first butterfly with normal pencil.: Alright, so let's start with sketching the first lines using the normal pencil. And the first thing that I always like to do is to draw a cross almost independent of the page, because that will help me with the composition off the sketch that I'm creating. So you don't have to be very precise with it. But especially in such a drawing like a butterfly, we need to have a decomposition of the page so we can have the butterfly in the middle and also the two wings. So I'm going to start with drawing the body of the butterfly. Going to start here with the head. I'm gonna make the body a little bit larger. And then the tail is going to be a little bit thinner. So when you are drawing from imagination, you do not have to worry a lot about the first details. And especially that you are using. Because it is very easy to fix mistakes in case you're not happy with the first sketch. I'm going to start with the first wing now. Do not worry about adding a lot of details right now because we haven't started with the charcoal. So you're just using the pencil to draw the first line so you can add some supportive lines for you later. So everything here will be deleted. And then we're going to draw on top of it with the charcoal. Like right here, I made this long stake by taking the line a little bit to the right. Meanwhile, I actually want the weight to be maybe a little bit tighter in this area. And this is gonna be the half of it. And this is the other half of the wing as well. So now I'm going to try to create the same drawing from the right side to the left side. So the first thing I want to do is just measure. So it's almost right here. I think I'm going to turn the sketch pad. As you can see, I'm growing Elizabeth quickly because it doesn't matter right now the lines that I'm drawing are not going to be visible later. I think this one needs to be Elizabeth large from this area right here. Then I'm going to draw this. Going to in this area right here. I think that as a start, this is okay. Of course I will do some fixing to the composition later. But this will help me right now with adding the borders of the butterfly. And maybe just do some small adjustments. I want the space between the two sides of each weighing to be a little bit more wider. So maybe this way. And I liked the curve of this one more than this one. So I'm just going to adjust this one, I believe in breadth. And then I'm gonna get started on the inner off of each way. This is your free space. You don't have to really have to follow everything that I'm drawing right now. You can also draw from your own imagination. If you want the design of the butterfly to be different. I think I wanna go for something simple. And especially if this is your first time drawing with charcoal, I do not want to add so many details. So it will be easy for beginners to follow the process. But feel free to to improvise and add your own touch on your own growing as well. And I think I want to draw some veins in the design, so maybe something like this. Now I'm going to try to copy whatever I've done over here. So just to count, we have 1234567 here. So I have 12345. And then number six is connected. So first I have this one. Line, number seven is this one right here. Now I'm going to start on the bottom side. So again, 123456. I'm going to start first with the middle one. I have to write here. So you don't have to be very, very precise, as you can see, even though I'm trying to copy paste the same, you still can have free space to draw a natural butterfly, so you don't have to be very identical between the left or the right. But if you want to follow the same process and try to apply the same design on both wings. You just have to count whatever you've done in one side and then add it to the other. So I have 1234 and then 56 right here. I think I want to improvise a little bit on this one. So maybe you just I have some corners to it. It feels like this area right here is a little bit larger. So I have 123456 and the same here, but it just feels like I drew these two in the wrong place. Okay, I think this looks a little bit better. So the only thing that I still want to adjust is this area right here. So I think that this is a little bit too narrow convert this one. I'm just going to do a final adjustment to it. Also lifted up. So as you can see, adjusting your first sketch is very, very easy when you start with a pencil. This is why it is essential to have it on your list of equipment. Maybe later on when you're experienced in using charcoal, you might want to skip this process and move straight to using the charcoal pencils. But if you're a beginner, this will help you a lot and you will not end up wasting some of your drawings because you made a mistake that is a little bit too difficult to fix. Right? So I'm happy with the sketch for now. Of course, there's mistakes that will be fixed when we move to the charcoal, but it's a good idea to have the first gets ready before you move on to the next step. So what we have to do right now before moving to using charcoal is clean up this sketch. So do not clean everything, so just keep with elicit physical. But just as you can see here, I'm just wiping some of the lines and she can see that you still can see them, but they're not as visible as the ones I just drew. Because this will help you see them, but they will be wiped out and replaced by charcoal. So just follow this step and wipe everything you draw. And let's move on to the next video and get started on drawing with the charcoal pencils. 4. Sketching the first butterfly with charcoal pencil.: So I wipe the pencil drawing and right now I'm going to start with redrawing the same lines but using the charcoal pencil. So I'm going to use the software. It's also up to you if you want to use the medium, but I would rather use this one as well. But I do not recommend going for the hard charcoal. I'm going to start first with the head. As you can see right now, a little bit more careful about the lines that I'm drawing because it's not as easy to clean up the charcoal. Just going to add small eyes right here and shave the head a little bit more. Now I'm going to move to the first way and then just do the same on the other side. Now I will move to the second half. So you have to be patient when you are drawing those lines and especially the borders. And do not worry if you made mistakes, you'll still be able to clean some of them using the rubber eraser. But the goal is to avoid that as much as possible. Now, I'm just trying to connect. The final one. I'm looking at what I've already done here so I can apply the same design right here. I see some curves that I have this little tail. There you go. I'm happy with the borders, but I might add some thicker borders later. But right now I want to go ahead and continue adding the lines that I already drew with a pencil. It's also a good idea to sharpen your pencil from time-to-time just to keep the lines that you are drawing very sharp. So I think I'm just going to do that right now. Right? So I'm happy with the shape of the butterfly. And I think right now I'm just gonna go ahead and start adding the same lines that I drew with the pencil. I'm going to start with these ones. The final 1 first. And then I'm going to move to the other side. Then do the same thing. So this 1 first, this one right here, and the final one. So now I'm going to move to the lines here on the bottom. You can see it's much easier to grow when you already have your sketch. And then with visible, You're right, So this is it for adding the first sketch. Right now I want to move ahead to adding some details. It's actually my favorite part because that's when we can get really creative and dive into the experience of using charcoal. Let's go ahead and move to the next video and get started on adding some details and some shadows. 5. Adding the final details (coal grading) to the first butterfly.: Alright, so let's start right now with adding some details. And the first thing that I noticed is that I did not actually add the eyes of the butterfly. So I'm gonna just draw two lines right here. Then another one here on the left. This one, it's just too short. Alright, so what I want to do right now is make the borders Olympic ticker, especially here on top. So what I'm gonna do is just draw some lines that are right next to the ones that I already have. You will start seeing how adding these details will really transform the sketch. I also want to make this one I lived with thicker. This one right here. I think I like this approach. So I'm making the lines thicker here closer to the body and then they just sent out. I get to the border. Final one right here. Now, we'll move to the other side. So it's really up to you if you want to finish an entire side and then move to the other. But my strategy is just tried to apply the same work as soon as possible. Then I still have the border right here. I think I made the side a little bit too thick. So I'm just going to equal this one as well. Right? So now we'll move to the details inside these two. What I will do right now is something optional. So if you do not want to do it, then feel free to skip it. But I think that this is going to be a special part of drawing with charcoal experience. So it's actually using your hand, it to spread there the coal around the drawing. So simply by just holding your pinky and doing this, you're going to be spreading the coal. You can see it just spreads really nicely around the area that you're wiping your pinky width. And it will get dirty it, but some people maybe do not like that, but I think it's a really nice part of the experience. So you can see here how it's detailing from a little bit too dark and then stays white right here. It's not as easy to do the same thing with a pencil. And do not worry, you will be able to clean your hands with normal soap afterwards. Scary. Make the lines a little bit longer. And especially here on the edges just to equal the other side. So now I will just work on the head 11. And I'm going to add something details to the body. So first I'm just going to use the pencil sharpener. I think that's it. I'm going to keep the extra fit for a different style. So maybe a line here and the moon. And then I'm just gonna make this section right here and then with darker. So right now I'm going to apply the same process to these two. And then on the other side, I'm really happy with the results of this code grading in this fourth. So I'm just going to keep them as they are. And then I'm going to move to these two sides right here. So first, I'm going to start with the slides. I think I'll just make this one a little bit thicker. The same way I applied to the top one. I'm gonna do the same thing in the bottom. So just the top border is thicker than the rest. Again, like I said before, this is your own free space to draw the butterfly of your choice. Maybe you can skip some of the steps that I'm working on right now if you do not like them. So as long as you're happy with the design that you're coming up with. It's okay to change things. I just want to make these ones here a little bit thicker like I did on the other side. Now I want to grade the greatest from the slides. So just simply by wiping my pinky on them. And then do the same thing on top. Alright, so one thing I always like to do is set, of course, cleanup breadth areas that were caused by my hand, as you can see, already got some colon if and it can spread to the coat around the drawing. This piece of rubber, the charcoal eraser. You can see it's just very easy to clean All around the growing with it. So do not worry in case you have the same things because once you're done, you can just do this quickly. These are some leftover lines from the pencils drawing I have. This looks good enough. I think that the drawing here is okay, I feel like it's finished. It's something that most beginner or advanced artists think of is like, what can I add it to my drawing to make it better? So you might always feel like you're drawing is not complete and the sketch could always be improved. But I like to respect the work that I've done and then I can move on to a different drawing. However, there's something I like to do which is to always leave the last two minutes of my work too well, take a look at the work I've done and think about what could be improved for next time. So in my case, I think, for example, that I want to focus more on details like, as you can see, these two lines right here are not very identical because this line goes to the edge, which is the second one. Meanwhile, the first line is the one that goes to the edge right here. Next time I want to be more careful about that. But I'm still happy with the work. I think that the charcoal drawing, especially using simple sketches like a butterfly, is a great start. And then you can move on to more complicated drawings as you get more experienced with it. I'm going to stop with this drawing right here and let's move on to a new one. 6. Second style & different position - Sketching with normal pencil.: Alright, so it's time to get started on a new sketch and it will be a second butterfly, but this time it will be a different position. So we will be looking at it from the side and not from the front like the first one. I also want to change the position inside my sketchpad, so I'll be drawing with vertical. And the first thing to do like before is to get started on drawing some lines in the middle of the page. Now I will start with the wings first. So just to place the body of the butterfly and the correct place first, I think I'm just going to draw very thin line. So maybe this way. And then the body of the butterfly will be right here. And I just want to make this one a little bit bigger from this area. And then this one will be a little bit shorter. So similar to the first one, it will have two parts to the top one and the bottom one. Just going to try to make the details a little bit different. Hey, imagine the body of the butterfly will be dark. And I think maybe I'll just at this table right here and the legs. Right. So, so far the sketch is, okay, this is what I have in mind. So I'm going to start by adding some details. Just before I clean up the pencil drawing. Just so I can think of some composition for the details I want to add to the wing. Maybe along one right here. So adding these details really helps me with drawing the lines with the charcoal. It's okay to improvise right now because it will ease up the process of adding the final details. Right? So I'm happy with this. So I'm gonna go ahead and clean it up so we can start with the charcoal pencil. 7. Sketching the second butterfly with charcoal pencil & adding final details.: So I cleaned up or the pencil drawing and right now I'm going to draw the same lines but using the charcoal pencil. So those details that I worked on with a pencil, I'm just going to try it angry mark them. Just like the first drawing. If you want to improvise as you go, then you should do that. As long as you keep it on the safe side. So do not ask, are the details that will be difficult for you to clean up. Now, the bottom one, I think I want to add this detail right here, just to separate them a little bit. This one broke, so I'm going to use the medium one. Now. I will just draw the body. Then these two legs. This is the closer one and that's the background. That's why it's a little bit shorter. The eyes. Now I'll get started on the details inside of the way. So I liked the long line that I created here. These two short lines. Then I will just try to add some more right here. I think since they are the body of the butterfly is flour space that I want to cover with coal. Then I will be using the piece of charcoal right here. If you do not have one, you can just go ahead and continue the work with a pencil. Right, So this looks okay. Right now I'm going to start just adding some details between the body and the wing. I'm going to try it and just mix them together with some shadow in-betweens. I'm just trying to make this line. The other one broke as well. Just have to use a pencil sharpener. And then just follow until I'm done with these lines right here. I'm going to go ahead right now and apply the same instead of using my pinky just to make the call. First-year inside the body. Now I'm just going to start just spread it a little bit around. In some areas I feel like it's still a little bit empty and I really like the darkness of the entire body. So I'm just going to try and cover them. And it's really nice to do the grading when you have a really large amount of coal to spread around. I just think it got it much right here, so I'm just going to try and clean those. So I'm gonna go ahead and add some more details also to the border lights here. Now I'm just going to try and even out the thickness of this line. I like the simplicity of service side, the small details and baselines right here. So I do not think I want to change much of it. We'll just do cleaning to this part in a second. Now this bottom line, I do not want it to be thicker than this. I'm just going to leave it as it is right now. I'm just going to clean up right in the middle because I really like how white edges of the wings are. So I'm just going to keep them as they are. I'm not even going to grade some cool inside. So I'm just going to focus on this grid right here. And I think it looks a write-down. So I actually really like it, the results of this butterfly right here. I do not want to add more details because I think the simplicity of it is nice enough. So I'm going to stop it here. And I actually cannot find any improvements that I can add for next time. Maybe just the gradient here is supposed to get maybe a little bit darker before it gets to this very light gray. But I also want to separate the body and the wing as much as possible. So you can see that the wing starts right here. So maybe if you want, you can just increase the darkness here other than breadth. But besides that, the sketch is complete and let's move on to another one. 8. Final butterfly style - Sketching with normal pencil.: Alright, so for the third butterfly we're drawing in this class, I'm gonna go with the same style as the first one. We're gonna be facing the butterfly and I will be drawing two wings. So I'm gonna go back to the basics and draw two lines in the middle of the page. Then for the shape of the butterfly, I'm going to try to create something different. So first I'm going to start with the body. Just make it a little bit sooner from here. Now I will just draw some lines to define the borders of the butterfly. So I think I want to go for something a little bit different with the wings this time. So these lines are just to help me with measuring the wings and making sure that they aren't even. Then I will just try to connect them right here. I think I just want to make this one a little bit wider. And from the other side as well. Right? I think I'm happy with the corners off the butterfly. Excuse me, draw the eyes right here. Now I will just start deciding details when you are drawing from imagination. And by now, this should be the third time you're doing this. It might be a good idea for you to start thinking of the ideas that you thought about earlier when you were brainstorming some design ideas for how you want to style the butterfly. Drawing with charcoal is very similar to abstract drawing because you have the freedom to select whatever you'd like to add to your own drawing. I think in my case, I want to add a lot of details with charcoal this time, I'm going to make this butterfly look a little bit darker than the other two that I drew. And I want to give it some more details on the edges. So this will be my space to do so. Think maybe details like these ones. Then I will just continue adding them as I go. May also want to do the same thing here. So as long as you are drawing on one side and then trying to apply the same idea on the other. You should be okay. I think another one right here. And again, you don't have to be a perfectionist about it. As long as you're just trying to add the same details, you don't have to be very strict with drawing the exact same sizes and measuring every single one you're drawing. In this goes to emphasize how important it is to start with the normal pencil. Because in case you do not like what you're working on, you can always just clean it up and start from scratch. So I'm okay with the details are for the bottom one so far, I think I'm going to move to the top one. I think I want the details to be a little bit more visible and the bottom side, but on the top one, I will have them to be a little bit more abroad. And last lines in between, at least on the area here closer to the body. So first, I'm going to draw these two lines. And then simply now I just wanted to fill the space, which is one of the interesting things about drawing from imagination as you create while you are working on your art. I think there's just this line here is a little bit too narrow. I'm actually going to fix it right now. I want some more space between this line right here and this one. Just to take another look at it. So I think the other one starts right here. I'm just going to clean up the oceans. Now. I'm just going to try and redefine lines one last time to connect these right here. So again, you do not have to try and follow the exact same design that I'm coming up with right now. Try to give your creativity a chance and see what lines you will end up drawing. I think this should be a little bit too close to the left side. Then this area I'll just be filling up with circles and then coloring the outside world. And then I'll just leave this space right here for spreading some charcoal. Right? So the first sketch seems okay. I'm gonna go ahead and clean this one up so we can move on to the charcoal drawing. 9. Sketching with charcoal - defining the final butterfly design.: Alright, so let's start with redrawing these lines using the charcoal pencil. I'm going to go ahead and start with the body. So first the head right here, and then just continue with the same lines. So again, as we said earlier, that he should be a little bit more careful when you're drawing with the charcoal. And just take it a little bit slower as well. At least when you are defining the borders of your drawing. So I'm just going to carefully try to add the details that I drew earlier. And then just try to create an identical link right here. So first I have this curve right here, so I'm just going to draw that. And then very little one right here. Then we have two smaller curves. And then a third one. And then a final curve right here. I'll just draw the bottom of it. I just wanted to be more careful. Now I will just draw the orders for the bottom sides. I'm just going to connect it with the body here first. And then just created minds here. I'm just going to draw the top one now. There you go. So I'm gonna go ahead right now and start doing the details inside. I'm going to start with the bigger lines. First, these two right here. And this time I'm going to pay more attention to the details so I can have identical wanes as much as possible. So just be careful where you start the lines and the spaces in-between. So first I'm going to draw the sphere one. And then just try to follow the same sketch that I created with a pencil. And I'm just going to go ahead and connect these two together. All right, so right now I'm just going to draw this line in the top side of the wings and then move on to the bottom ones. I'm going to start with these right here. And then just keep following the same process. You can find many different designs of these on the Internet in case, again, you're not happy with the drawing, the same one that I'm working on. Otherwise, I really encourage you to try and create your own one from scratch. So use your imagination and think of a style that attracts you. Maybe you're happy with more sharp edges instead of curvy ones like the one that I'm creating. I think that's it for sketching beer. First lines. So I'm just gonna go ahead and free Draghi's. And let's move on to adding the details. 10. Coal drawing & grading - part #1 : Alright, so back to my favorite part, which is adding the details. I'm gonna go ahead and start with the borders because I want the borders of the wings to be very thick. So I'm gonna go ahead and do that. So as mentioned before, I want to add a lot of charcoal inside this butterfly. I'll be adding so many darkness, so it will be darker than lighter, which is not the case in the previous two drawings. As you can see, it's easy to draw two lines and then fill them in between, then you can always just adjust the thickness. So right now I'm just covering the details a little bit quickly, but later on, I will just make sure to finalize the thickness of the lines later. So far I'm going to move on to the second one and just do the same process. You might be wondering why I'm not using it. A piece of charcoal right here. But that's because it will be a little bit less easy for me to create lines with it. However, if you want to fill some spaces, then you can go ahead and use it. But S4, the borders of it. I highly recommend that you go for the pencil. Alright, so I just want to look at the thickness and I see that this one is still a little bit thicker, so I'm just gonna go ahead and try it, equal them. And then just a little bit right here. I'm gonna do the same and the bottom. And then just start from the other side and just connect them right here. And then the final one. Now I'm gonna get started with the details on top. So these circles that I drew earlier, I'm just gonna go ahead and randomly creates. Now I'm just going to fill this space in-between. As you can see, it is getting much darker. So don't worry about the fact that there's gonna be some white areas right here because later on when we spread the coal around, he'll be able to fix that. So three circles right here and I'm just going to Color around them as well. I'm just improvising as I go. Just finding the spaces that I think it fits to add a circle, and just coloring the rest. Feel free to draw them first with a pencil if you're not comfortable creating them with a charcoal pencils. Just in case you're unhappy with where you're looking at them. You can also just add them with the charcoal right away if you're comfortable with it. I'm actually going to create smoother for whitespace right here. Just to make it, I'm sure it's not gonna get too dark. Right? So I'm just going to create those 3 first and then apply the same process. I'm just going to color that. I just also want to look at that as I go. So one right here, smaller one next to it. Closer to this side. This will be the fourth, and then there's 100. Smaller one right here. I have these three left, so they are identical. It's just more space right here. And then in this area, I'm going to try to fix that. In this place. I'm just slowly trying to get this one closer. As you can see it, It's not very satisfying to look at the charcoal right now because we haven't done any spreading yet. But don't worry about that because the end results will look a little bit different than this. And it also takes a little bit longer to finish covering up with the charcoal. So if you want, you could consider using the the piece of charcoal instead of the charcoal pencil. Maybe I will try to do that as well. I think I'm just going to try to cover this area. It's just a little bit intimidating to see that. They will not be able to see a little bit behind. Because there are some circles that I want. White sound just tried to cover it a little bit more carefully. And then I will just stop right here until I decide what to do with the rest of the space. S for this side, I think I'm going to start covering it as well. But first I want to draw some very small circles. Just a few one right here. So there's two in this area. Three. If you want to add less or more than, this is up to you. Just always remember that this is your own space to create whatever you want. I think I'm going to cover in-between them with the charcoal pencil instead. Just because the details over to small and I'm worried I would cover them with a piece of charcoal by mistake. So now I'm gonna move to the other side and also just feel some large spaces before I start adding some small details with the charcoal pencil. Right? So I think I'm just going to use it right now because it doesn't seem to save me more time. I'm just going to try to define this one. Then do the same thing around these small circles. You can see that there's some leftover from my hand around this place. But if you face the same problem, don't worry because we can easily clean it afterwards. It's important for me to leave the rest of the areas. So why It's because the butterflies are ready too dark. So it makes sense to keep all these areas right here and whites. This is, of course, my own personal preference. But if you have some different ideas than he should, of course go for them. You're right, so this one is pretty much done. So I'm gonna go ahead and apply the same process on the other side. Then again, I'll have to define the edges of the areas that I want to keep white. As I said before, this is even better for longer process than the other two drawings. That's because we're using a larger amount of coal. So it takes some patients. Five. I'm really looking forward to seeing the end result. It's rare for me as well to use this. That's cool in one small drawing. And the bottom one is done. 11. Coal drawing & grading - part #2: So right now I want to focus on these two top ones. Just so I can have the final shape of the butterfly. I'm going to try to cover them. And as I said before, I want the white areas to be a little bit bigger here. Then in the bottom, I'm going to keep all these ones in white and just define the edges in-between them. I'm gonna be covering some of the area right here with cove and the rest. I will just spread the coal around it, so I'll just keep the lines in this side right here. Then I'll just do the same over here. And then just apply the same work is over there. So first, I'm just going to define each one of them is detail. So this is gonna be the first one. And then since the second, you can see there's this one right here and then there's white area. It's not just can do the same thing. It's always easier to do the second one because you already know what you're drawing. You're just trying to cover your face. And then there's this fine line right here. All right, so right now I'm going to clean up or Lindbergh because it looks a little bit too dirty. I'm actually going to try to just spread the piece and then Bye. It covers bigger space. I'm definitely going to be doing some work cleaning later, but just so I can see the end results without the oldest mess around them. I'm trying to do some cleaning right now because I wanted to see the drawing without Nicole and the white areas. Right? So this is enough. Now, I'm gonna go ahead and start spreading because all around. So first I'm going to start with the tough area. In some areas you have to add some more code to spread it. So you can see every time we try to add some more calls, the drawing looks a little bit better. And then right here I'll just be spreading. To add some more lines. I have some more cool to work with. Again, like I said before, if you're not comfortable with using your hand and getting your hands dirty when you're using the charcoal pencil, then feel free not to apply the same steps. You can try to rely on the charcoal pencil, but it will not be the same results because you're going to be drawing some lines with the pencil. So it's easier to define the circles first. And then just try to cover all the white areas. Made a small mistake by covering this one, but you're right. Make sense to stretch the edges of this one right here. And then do the same thing on the other side. So right now I think I will move to these two right here. So I'm just going to start spreading right away. You can see it already got more dirty than before, but that's okay. I'll just be patient when I'm cleaning it up. As long as I get the results that I want from the darkness of the core. Just trying to even out these two lines in the space between them, in the body. Those circles almost are disappearing, but it's okay because I will just use the rubber eraser to make them white. Right? So wow, maybe just making this one a little bit darker again. This area right here. The final thing I want to work on is actually the body because I haven't started on that yet. So I think I just wanted to give it simple since there's already too much details on the wings. I'm just going to redefine it again. Right? So I think this is enough. I'm going to spend some time on cleaning the drawing. So let's move on to the next video where I will be showing you the final result and also explain a little bit about the class project. 12. Show me your work! (Class project).: Alright, so I finished cleaning this one. I do not even want to touch it because it's getting a dirty really easily from my hands. I'm happy with the results. And if you were able to follow through the process, I know it took a little bit longer than the other two, but I believe that it's worth it because I'm happy with the darkness of the butterfly. Now for the class project, I would like to ask you to select one of the butterfly designs in this class are either one of your choice that you'll find on the Internet or you created it by herself from your imagination. If you please take a picture of your drawing and then edit it under the projects and resources section below. I would love to see your work and if you would like to ask for feedback or to share it with me for inspiration, I would love to see it. So this is it for this class. I really hope that you had fun drawing together and I look forward to seeing you in my upcoming courses.
