1. Introduction: America, and I'm a little bit of a science and tech geek and by day, a science teacher. Over the past couple of years, I've had a lot more quiet time on my hands and this beautiful time just to create. I absolutely love, color and love repeat patterns. You can find me on instagram at science maven designs and on my website, science favored designs dot com. I'm absolutely real that you're here with me today, and I can't wait to share this class with you. The following lessons will guide you through how to create a cute animal seamless repeat pattern on your iPad. Using one free app. Photoshopped Mix free clip art and your trustee finger. No need for an iPad pro or an apple pencil. When you have finished your design, you will be guided through how to add your repeat pattern to either your lock screen or home screen on your iPad to freshen up its look. As a bonus, I will also take you through the steps involved in having your design printed on a T shirt . This would make a great gift. This class is designed for the beginner who doesn't have any experience with creating repeat patterns and for those who wish to create fun and simple patterns. Using ready made images, this class will guide you through installing photoshopped mix, downloading clip art that is royalty free and in the public domain, checking that your clip art has a transparent background and removing any backgrounds of necessary arranging your clip art to create a pleasing pattern. Creating a repeatable tile, saving your pattern to your ipads home screen or lock screen and upload in your design so that it can be printed on a T shirt. I may even throw in a little signs for you. To complete this class, you will need an iPad Photoshopped mix and access to a REB browser and the Internet. I will be teaching this class using chrome. Your class project is to make a seamless repeat pattern using public domain clip art and saving it as your ipads lock screen or home screen. I've included a bonus lesson where I show you how to have your design made into a T shirt. At the end of this class, you will have a fun repeat pattern that you can use any number of ways printing it on a card making thank you card. Sounds fun having your design made into a phone case, using it to make a child's birthday card invitation or any other creative idea that you can come up with. You will also have the skills and resources to make more repeat patterns with any of your artwork or other images that are in the public domain. I can't wait to see what you design. 2. Photoshop Mix: in this lesson, we will download Photoshopped mix from the APP store and set up the preferences. So first of all, I'm going to go into the APP store and I'm going to search for foe Toe shop mix. And here it is, the Blue Square with the two circles. You're going to download it once you've downloaded it. I want you to open it so that we are going to go into this program head on over to the Blue Square with the two white circles and tap on preferences. Yours will probably say image export options and have auto here. We want to make sure that we have selected PNG and that the check mark is right beside PNG . This is how we want to export our work as well. You want the auto snap toggled on, make sure that the white buttons to the right and that you can see the blue. So not like that, but like fact. And now you have set up photo shop mix and the preferences Now that we have installed Photoshopped mix, we will move on to the next lesson. Rebel download or clip art
3. Download Clipart: in this lesson, we will download the clip art that we will use to create our repeat pattern. This clip art is both royalty free, so you don't have to pay for it and in the public domain, meaning that we are free to use it in any way that we want. So go ahead and open up your Web browser and type in www dot c l k e r dot com and this is clicker dot com, and it will say free clip art and images, millions of royalty free images. That is what we want. Now I'm going to go ahead and I'm going to search for certain cartoon animals, and that's what I'm going to use to create my repeat pattern. You are more than welcome to follow along with me, but if you would rather search for something else other than cartoon animals, feel free. So I'm going to go ahead and search for car tune zebra, and I don't see my zebra, But I actually really like this penguin, so I'm going to tap on the penguin, and once your image has come up, what you're going to dio is you are going to tap on large and you're a beautiful cartoon And we will come up here and you're going Teoh, tap and hold on the image and you're just going to say save image and this will save it to your camera roll. So you're going to do this for your five favorites? You want a download? Five things. So I'm going to go back. And there wasn't other ones that I want. I really like this cartoon rhino. So again I'm going to tap large and there's my beautiful rhino tap and hold seif image. It's now in my camera so I can close that tab. I'm going to search for car tune, pig and scroll till I find the one that I would like. Oh, there's my zebra. OK, I'm gonna get my zebra. Well, I can I'm going to top large. My beautiful cartoon Seabra comes up tap and hold save image. And actually, I might just add that the tapping and holding is the method that the chrome Web browser uses to save images to your camera roll. So if you're not using chrome, there will be another method for you. But I'm so I'm not sure how to do it in another Web browser. But there should be either down the blank or if you tap and hold some different options will most likely come up. So now. But I have my zebra. I'm actually going to go back here and I'm going to do the elephant as well. And I'm going to top on large tap and hold Seif image. All right? I totally forget how maney I've downloaded. So let me go into my images here. Recent I've got 1234 So I want to make sure I download one more. And I think what I would really like. Uh, there is my pig. Okay, Large tap and hold save image. And now I've got my five animals saved to my camera roll. You go into my camera roll and double check that I have 12345 Yes, I do have my five animals. I'm actually going to go back into clicker because what I also will need is a black circle . So just search for black circle and this is what kind you want. So again we can tap on large tap and hold and make sure you have saved this black circle. Now that we have downloaded the clip art that we will use to create our design, it's time to check and make sure that each image has a transparent background, and this is what we'll do in the next lesson.
4. Transparent Background: in this lesson, we will open up our clip art in Photoshopped mix to ensure that each image has a transparent background. This is important for what we begin to arrange. An overlap are images in our repeat pattern. If an image does not have a transparent background, we will learn how to remove it in photo shop mix. So we'll go ahead and open Photoshopped mix and I'm going to tap on the plus and I'm going to open image and I will find my recent and I'm going Teoh, open up my pig Now, If you see this checkerboard background, it means that it is a transparent background. So my pig is actually fine. There was nothing else I need to do with this file right now. So I'm gonna go back, tap my plus open image, and I will check on my elephant and again Yes, I see the checkerboard background. Thank goodness my elephant is ready to go and let's double check our next one. So plus image and my zebra great! My zebras ready to go as well. And I will plus image and open up my rhino. I see the checkerboard background. Great. My rhinos ready to go and I'm going to plus image and finally my penguin and actually are all fine. Let me check on the black circle. So plus image and black circle. And actually it has a transparent background as well to show you what to do if you download an image that does not have a transparent background I have taken a screen capture of this delightful picture off an elephant. I have gone to the plus I have tapped on image and I've opened my image that does not have a transparent background. When a tap on this plus and I'm going toe add a colored background, I want something that I can see really well. So I'm going to slide over to the red and I'm going to tap done. I'm just going to grab this layer and drag it being neath my elephant. This is going to help me to see whether or not I have erased the whole white background I'm going to tap on my elephant layer and I'm going to tap cut out auto. I can see that it really didn't work very well actually, but I'm going to do is go to add. And I'm just gonna take my finger and go around my elephant and you can see that the red that was there is actually disappearing on my elephants. I want to make sure that I am selecting my whole elephant here. And you know what? I'm not sure whether I can get the tail here. Thiel might have to go as we're using our finger. We don't have a lot of control, but I'm actually going over the edge just a little bit because I can get rid of the extra background student. But you'll start to see why I have a red layer beneath this. I can see what is happening, what is getting selected. So I'm just drawing around the edge of my elephant with my finger. At this point, it's OK if you have extra, but you want to make sure that you have your entire elephant. Once you have your entire image, you can now tap on, subtract. And now I'm gonna color in the background and you can start to see that my elephant is now clearly outlined. Just run your finger over anything that you don't want. If you accidentally grab part of your elephant again, Goto add And this will add that selection back in. You can talk. Go back and forth between the subtract and add to make sure that you've got a nice, clean image with no background. So I've taken away part of my elephants foot so I can go toe ad and get my elephant foot back in there. Go back to subtract and work on getting rid of the background. And I think its tail is gonna have to go. I'm not sure that that's gonna work or you can have a little manager, too. I've got my elephant with the red background that is letting me know that that is what is going to be deleted. So I compress the check mark. Now I can delete the color layer Aiken tap on it and just hit delete down below. And now you can see the lovely checkerboard. And I do have my elephant on a transparent layer. Do this for any images that you have that have a white background or a colored background, and you want to check and make sure that your black circle has a transparent black background as well, and I can see that mine indeed does. Now that our clip art has a transparent background, it is time to arrange our images into a pleasing pattern. This is what we'll do in the next lesson.
5. Arrange Into Pattern: in this lesson, we will arrange our images into a pleasing pattern. Using the Photoshopped mix, I'm going to tap on the plus custom canvas and you are going to title this animal pattern and for the width, you're gonna type in 4000 and the height will be 4000 as well. Make sure it says pixels and I can tap on create. And there we go. I have my canvas. When I bring in each of my images, it is really, really important to not resize our images. These images are made up of pixels and if I stretch it, it will stretch the pixels and it will not look like a solid elephant or a solid section of color. And if I shrink it, it will kind of push the pixels together and again. It won't look like a solid color or a really nice image anymore. I'm going to add my images, so I'm gonna tap on, plus tap on image. It brings up my camera roll and I'm just going to bring in my image. So again, my lovely rhino is going to stay of that size. I'm going to start in the center so leaving my rhino there is just fine. So I will tap to bring in another image. And now I will move that image where I want it. So again, I'm not dragging either of these corners to make it smaller or bigger. I'm leaving it the way it is I'm gonna tap and bring in. Uh, my elephant. I'm gonna find a nice place for my elephant. I could leave some space between my elements. That's just fine. And I use the word element to mean each animal that I am bringing in. Okay, Gonna bring in the next one, my pig, by a nice place for my pick to go. And I think because my rhino and my elephant are both gray, I'm going to keep some separation there. I wouldn't want sort of a whole lineup of elephants and wind chills. I'm going to bring in my next. What did I miss my penguin There, Bring in my penguin and find a good place. I'm overlapping it, but I'm making sure that I'm not spacing things out evenly. And I'm not putting them all on horizontal lines or vertical lines. When we look at our pattern, we actually don't want to see any stripes or lines, no matter which way they are going. So I really want to make sure that this is a random pattern. Now that we have these guys, I think I'm happy with where they are. I'm going to tap and I'm going to merge down Tap my layer, Merge down, tap my layer, Merge down, tap my layer, Merge down. So now this is one solid image. So I could move this around if I want the other key here to making the resolution look, as nice as we can is to not duplicate this. We want to start fresh again and bring in all of our images again so I can bring in my penguin, and I'm going to bring this penguin far away from the other penguin. I don't want my friendly penguins to be all lined up on one layer, so I'm going to space them out. I can move to the next animal plus image, bringing my rhino and find a place. I'm not gonna put him beside the other rhino. And I don't want him to close to my elephant either. I could tap the plus bring in my another image. I'm going to bring in my elephant, keeping the greys away a little bit. And if I do want this elephant below the rhino, make sure it's not exactly lined up. So I might put him to the side there. And having a little space is absolutely fine plus image bringing my pig find a nice place for my pig to sit. Plus image. I forgot, my dear Seabrook, and let's find a place for him. So again it is going over here. I'm gonna make him go up a little bit, so it's not exactly lined up horizontally. I'm gonna shift him up a little bit. And having that little space there is just fine. Now that I have brought in 12345 I can tap the top one. Merge down, meaning it will combine with the layer below it. So tap the top player, merge down top layer, merge down top layer merged out, and it's fine to leave these two separate. What I want you to do is to go ahead and continue doing this and fill up your canvas. But you're going to leave space along all of the borders We don't want anything to go over the borders. I'm going to speed up the videos. You can see what I'm doing and you'll see that I'm not putting anything over any of the edges. I'm not going to close Happy arranging your animals again, using all the lessons we've just learned Not making anything lined up and just vary your color along here. - If you find that you have no more plus available there, it does mean that you can't add any more layers. So I'm just going to merge these down and then you'll see the plus come up again. What I think I'm gonna do is take these layers that I'm happy with already and merge down. And this will give me some more layers to work with to bring in my animals. Now that I have failed my canvas and I have stayed away from the edges, I'm actually going to merge down all of my layers like that one image. So I'm just gonna top the top layer, merge down top the top layer, merge down and continue on until I've got one layer. Now I can center that the last thing I'm going to dio. I'm going to add a new layer and I'm going toe add in my black circle and I'm going to put this right in the corner. And actually, I can just duplicate this layers, Aiken, tap on that and Aiken duplicate and just pull it over so that I've got part off the black circle in each corner. Now I am cutting it off on purpose. I just need to make sure that I've got some whoops. If you need to undo something, there is a left facing arrow to just undo that. And I all I wanted to do was to duplicate this last circle. Now it does not matter. These black circles air going over the edge. In fact, they must go over the edge. I want to make sure that I got some image. Something in all of the four corners. I'm going to share this to camera roll. I've just got this share image right there. Send to camera roll saving. I can come back into my menu here, the arrow, and instead of calling it new composition, I can tap on that and I'm going to call it animals arranged rename. Now that we've arranged our clip art into an initial pattern. It's time to begin creating a repeatable tile, and this is what we'll do in the next lesson.
6. Repeatable Tile: in this lesson, we will create one tile that could be repeated seamlessly as many times as we would like. We are going to go back into Photoshopped mix. I'm going to tap on the plus icon tap image. And I'm going to go to my recent and Polian the picture off my little zoo. I'm going to do this four times so that I have four layers. So again, I'm going to tap image all of my animals plus image all of my animals plus image all of my animals. I can now see that I have four layers and actually what? I want a double check. I'm going to go to this arrow that will take me back to my menu. I'm going to tap on the two circles, tap on preferences and make sure that I got auto snap turned on and I do okay, so I can go back into my new composition and what I'm going to do is I'm going to do something that is called the slide and going to do the slide in a clockwise fashion. So I've got 1234 layers. I'm going to first move into the top left hand corner moving clockwise will take me to the top right hand corner, the bottom right hand corner and the bottom left hand corner. So again I'm going to slide into the top. Left slide top, right, Slide bottom Right, Slide bottom left and again, I am moving in a clockwise fashion. When I do this, I have to make sure that my layer snaps toothy vertical and horizontal guidelines. So I will see these fate. Blue lines come up, but I want to make sure and you'll feel it snap a little bit there. I've got the vertical and horizontal guidelines that come up with that and have to make sure to release my finger straight up so that my tile doesn't slide it all now going to move into the top right hand corner and I'm going to tap the next layer down, move my finger and slide it into the top right hand corner and wait until I see the faint vertical and horizontal guidelines. I will see those blue lines come up. Take my finger straight up. I'm going to tap the next layer down. I'm going to slide into the bottom right hand corner So just grab this tile slide and wait until I see both my vertical and horizontal guidelines come up. Whoops. And I can see that that moved. So I'm just gonna nudge it back down, and it can take a little bit. So just keep nudging it back and forth, back and forth until you see the guides last layer, and I'm sliding this into the bottom left hand corner. So I congrats this tile, slide it down into the bottom left hand corner and make sure I see the vertical and horizontal guidelines come up. What I would like to do now is double check that everything is lined up appropriately. I'm going to keep my eye on the blue dot in the center, and all I'm going to do is tap each layer and make sure that that blue dot is not wobbling back and forth. And I can see that that blue dot stays absolutely where it iss Therefore, I know that everything is lined up correctly here. My next step is to merge all of the layers that I have so I can tap the top one and just say, merge down, tap, merge down top merge down, and now I have them all merged, and I can see that there are no white lines on the any of the corners or sides of my tile. However, I do have a big black blob in the centre, and I'm going to get rid of that. To do that, I'm going to tap on, cut out and make sure I tap subtract on the left hand side. There, I can zoom in to take my finger dragging around my black spot and it is gone. I will then tap on the check. Mark and I have gotten rid of my black spot. I now have a horizontal and vertical space that I need to fill up with my zoo animals. So I'm going to use the same process I did before. I'm going to tap on the plus at image. Add one off my animals. Remember, I don't resize it, and I'm just going Teoh, slide it into a spot. However, I need to make sure that it does not go over the edge. If I do, it will not repeat seamlessly, so have to be really sure to nudge it as close as I can to the edge, but it doesn't go over the edge. So all I'm gonna do plus image keep adding in my animals until I have filled up the horizontal and vertical white spaces. I'm making sure to not go over the edge to kind of put my animals off center a little bit. I don't want to be able to see these lines so I can nudge them up and down a little bit. And I have to move them left and right as well. And I will run out of layers so I can simply tap You may need to top twice Merge down, tap, merge down, tap, merge down. I'm going to keep doing this. I will speed up the video. You're just gonna tough on your plus. Tough on image. Bring in one of your animals, put it into place and continue making sure to not touch the's edges. Remember, if you don't see the plus there you've run out of layers. So simply tap march down top merge down top Merge down top march down The pluses come up And I got lots more layers to use. All right, you can see that I have filled the horizontal white space, and I have filled the vertical white space as well. I've gone very close to the edge, but I have not gone over the edge. So now this is a repeatable tile and it will repeat seamlessly. I'm going to tap on the arrow to get back into my menu. And before I forget, I'm going to save this of tap on new composition. It's just taking a minute to save here. Saving it will tap new composition. Tough the X to get rid of that. And I'm going to call this animals repeatable rename. What I'm now going to do is I I want to keep this file so I can just tap this duplicate button and I've got a copy. This means that it's saving. I'm going to tap on the name top on the X and call this animals final rename. Now, I don't want those silly squares behind there to show that the transparent background I want a nice background color. So I'm gonna open up this animal's final file. I'm going Teoh, merge down all of the's layers until I have one layer. Now what I'm going to dio is I'm going to add a new layer, and I'm gonna add a color layer. Now I get to choose what color I would like here. I think what I would like perhaps, is the see if I can eyeball the color of the pig might be challenging there, done, and I'm going to move that layer to the bottom. So just tap it, hold it and drag and you can see. Now I've got a nice sort of coral colored background. I just want to make sure that my edges are all colored here and that I don't see any white space, and that looks good. What I can do now is share this share button and safety camera roll, and my file now is nice and big to use for many applications. Now that we have one tile that could be repeated seamlessly and we've added in the background color, it's time to create a wallpaper for iPad. And this is what we will do in the next lesson.
7. Create Wallpaper: Now that we have are repeating tire with a background color, it's time to create a wallpaper that is the correct size far. IPad. I'm going to come out of this application and I'm going to move in to Crow or any other browser. And what I want to dio is going to my main bar here, and I'm gonna type in screen resolution dot net. And what this will do is tell me what the size is off my street and their ago 1024 by 13. 66 it is 1024 pixels high and 13 66 pixels wide. We want to make sure that we've got this number correct. And what I can do is actually just take a screen capture, okay? And now I have saved my information. I'm gonna go back into Photoshopped mix, go back into my menu. These files are quite large, or they can take a minute to save. I'm gonna tap on the plus, and I'm going to tap on custom canvas. So this is mine screen sighs. My width was 13. 66 my height was 10 24. And make sure you've got your width and height correct and not reversed. Create. And that will be the size of my screen. I can now tap the plus button, bring in an image, bring in my colored background, and I'm going to say resize and you can see that I've got blank spaces. And this is why we have a repeatable tile. I can just move that tile over and at another layer image, bring in my repeatable tile, slide it over, and now you'll see that it matches up perfectly. And that's what a seamless repeat tile. Well, dio, I can now go to share camera roll saving. Okay, Tap to go back into my menu. Wait for to finish saving. In order to keep all of these files straight, I'm gonna tap on new composition. Tap on the X and call this animals wallpaper toe. Add this as my wallpaper. I can go. I'm gonna go into my photos top on recent. Here's my picture. I'm going to open that up and I'm going to press share. And now what? I can dio as Aiken say, use us wallpaper and there I go. It is now saved as my wallpaper set Set lock screen. And now, if I lock my iPad, I have a beautiful, seamless repeating tile that I have created. Now that we have used our seamless repeat pattern to create a wallpaper for our iPad, it's time to see how else we can use our design. In the next lesson, we will use our repeat pattern as a design for a T shirt.
8. T-Shirt: in this lesson, we will look at how we can print a repeat pattern on a T shirt through Vista print. I've opened up Google Head on over to vista print dot c a. I'm now going to search for T shirt. I'm going to click on basic T shirts, but you've got premium T shirts, kids T shirts, women's T shirts, men's T shirts, lots of options. So I will click on basic T shirts and for me, I'm going to click on Women. I'm going to choose a white color. I'm going to click on classic and printing option. I want full color. I'm going to order one to start off with, and I'm going to start designing. I've saved my image to my computer. I will now click on Upload it to use my complete design head on over to my computer. Click on that And here is the image file that I saved from my iPad Open. And what I can do now is just drag my image into this blue section right here. Let go. I'm going to check this error message here, it says. Keep the element inside the safety line to make sure it doesn't get cut off, so it may have cut off some of the image, but it doesn't really matter because we've made a repeatable tile, so at this point, it can get cut off. I go to the second message. I can see the image resolution looks great. So when it's printed, it will be nice and sharp. So I can just close that message. And actually, what I might do is don't show this again. Okay? I can head on over to the preview. I think that that looks great. That's kind of fun, actually, I can review him purchase, and you need to check that I have reviewed and approved my design. Click next, and then you can move on to sizing and then actually order your T shirt. Now that you've created a wallpaper for your iPad and seeing how you can print your design on a T shirt, you can explore other products upon what you can preacher design and with your newfound skills, you are all set to create as many repeat patterns as your heart desires.
