1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi friends. How are you? I hope you're having a great day today. I'm excited about sharing this project with you. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that I designed, especially for kids. Students do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all. To be successful with this project. I will guide students step-by-step through all the steps that they need to take. Today, we're going to be creating this Halloween scarecrow scene. Let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a sheet of watercolor paper. You will need a set of watercolor paints and a cop horrible with clean water. You will need two different size paint brushes. You will need a larger paintbrush for the background and a smaller paint brush for the detail work. You will also need a permanent marker. Permanent means that the ink in the marker will not run around on your piece of paper when you add water to it. And then you will also need a paper towel. So go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials. I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Paint the Background: In this step we are going to paint the background. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to add one or two drops of water into the following colors. Red, orange, yellow, if you'd like to use pink. And if you have pink, go ahead and drop a drop or two of water into your pink. So we have a drop of water in our red paint, orange paint, yellow paint. And I have pink. So I dropped a drop of water into my pink paint as well. While these paints are softening up, Let's turn our attention to our piece of paper. So what we're going to do is we're going to create a circle. The circle is going to start about right here. And if you look at the middle of your piece of paper, the middle of my piece of paper is right here, so I'm going to go over a little bit above the middle. And I'm going to start with a yellow circle, that's going to be the moon. Then around that circle, I'm going to paint with some orange paint. And then either red or pink. I haven't decided yet. So I want my colors to be pretty bright. So I'm going to use a lot of paint in a little bit of water. I'm going to load some yellow paint onto my paintbrush. And I'm just going to make a circle like this. Going to fill in that circle. I want to make sure it's a nice, strong color. And let me show you how big it's going to get. Going to get about this big. I want it to be fairly large. We're going around and around in circles. We're not going up and down. We're just going around and around. Alright? Now that we have our yellow paint, what we're going to do is we're going to add some orange paint around the yellow paint. I'm going to take a moment to do that and I'm going to come several inches out away from that yellow paint. If I feel like my paintbrush is getting a little bit dry, I'm just going to add some more water onto it and just keep going around and around until I'm happy with my circle going around my moon. Alright, so there's my yellow and my orange. Now I'm going to move onto her edge and I'm going to go on the outside of that orange. It's okay if I overlap a little bit and I'm just going to keep going around and around. I'm not going through my orange or yellow. I'm going around. Alrighty. Now at this point you can either switch to pink or you can continue on with your red. If you don't have pink, I'm going to switch to pink. And then I'm going to go all the way down to the bottom of my piece of paper. Already friends. So I have my whole background painted and I'm really happy with it. What we need to do now is we need to allow our background painting to dry. We need to make sure that it's really dry before we start doing the next step, which is drawing our design. So go ahead and allow your painting to dry completely. And in the next step, we will start drawing our design. 3. Step 2: Draw a Pumpkin Scarecrow Design: In this step we are going to draw our design. So let's get started. Make sure that your background paint is completely dry before you start this step, go ahead and pick up your permanent marker. And we're going to find the middle of our sheet of paper. So the middle of my sheet of paper is about right here. This is where the head of our scarecrow, it's going to go. And then most of our design is going to be down here at the lower part of our piece of paper. So I'm going to start about right here on the right hand side. And I'm going to make a circle. This is going to be the face and head of my scarecrow. On top of this circle, I'm going to make a hat. So I'm just going to make a hat that looks like this. I'm going to make a straight line on top of the circle and then double that up and then fill that in. I'm filling this in with marker because it is pretty thin and it would be hard. It would be challenging for me to get a paintbrush into that space. Now I'm going to put a square on top of that shape. That's going to be the top of this care grows hat. I'm going to come down here and I'm going to make a neck right here underneath this circle. And then underneath the neck, I am going to make a straight line that touches the neck. Like this. These are going to be the arms of my scarecrow, one arm in arm. Now I'm going to go to the middle of this line and I'm going to make the letter u like this. And then down here underneath the letter U, I'm going to make the bottom part of the clothing for my scarecrow. So I'm going to make a slanted line coming out from that letter U and another slanted line on the other side. And then a zigzag line for the bottom of the clothing. Now I'm going to come back up here to this space and I'm going to make the hands. So I'm just going to make some hands that look like this. You can make any type of hands that you'd like. And then I'm going to make some zigzag lines underneath that line and going all the way to the hands. Alright, now we're going to come down to the bottom and we're going to create a stick because normally scare crows, the way that they're propped up is there on a stick. So I'm going to make a stick coming down. And it's going all the way to the bottom of our sheet of paper. Now what we're going to do is we're going to add a little bit of background detail. So we're going to add a tree over here on this side and it's going to be a flowy tree. So I'm going to start here at the bottom and then I'm going to come up, it's just going to be a stick. And then it'll come out this way. Then I'll just add some branches. It's not going to have a whole lot of detail. Just add the branches that you'd like. Here we go. Now let's add a couple of bats in the sky. So I'm going to add about here. So that would be a curved line attached to another curve line. Then underneath some letter use attached to the middle. So I'm just going to make about that looks like this. If there is a different type of a bat that you'd like to make, go ahead and make that. Remember, it's just going to be the silhouette. So we don't need to add any details into the bats shape. Just like we're not going to add any details into the spaces on the scarecrow. Alright, so there is one bat, I think I'll make another bat here. So two curved lines that are connected together and then underneath more curved lines that are a little bit smaller. So you can make as many bats as you'd like. I think I might make one more back up here. I'll make it go a little bit more this way. Here we go. Alright, Now's the time. If you'd like to add any other details to your design, you can go ahead and do that. I forgot to mention down here at the bottom, we are going to have some grass and some weeds, but we're not going to add those until we add the black paint. In the next step, we will be adding some black paint. 4. Step 3: Paint the Design: In this step, we're going to add some black paint to our design using our smaller paintbrush. Alright, the first thing that we're going to do is we're going to add a drop or two of water into our black paint. And we're going to let it sit for a moment while we talk about our design, our drawing. So here we have our drawing. What we're going to do is we're going to fill in the spaces with our black paint that haven't been filled in by the marker. And then as far as the tree goes, we're just going to cover these lines with black paint to make them a little bit thicker. And then we're going to fill in the spaces on the bats. And then down here at the bottom, we're going to start at the very bottom of our sheet of paper. And we're going to bring some lines up like this. And we're just going to add some grass and some weeds. Okay. So I think that our black paint is probably ready for us to use by now. You will need a smaller paint brush for this. So I hope that you have one available to you when it's fairly small. The reason why we like to use a small paint brush for this part of our design is because it makes it easier to get into these small spaces without going outside of the lines. Now I want my paint to be pretty dark, so I'm not going to add a lot of water to it. And I'm just going to just start painting. I am going to try my best to stay inside of the lines. But if I go outside of the lines a little bit, That's okay. That happens sometimes when you are creating. So what I'm going to do is I am just going to fill in these spaces on the Scarecrow and the bats. I'm going to cover those lines on the tree with black paint. And then I'll come back and show you how to create the grid class. Already friends. So now I'm finished with filling in the spaces on the scarecrow, covering the lines on the tree, and then filling in the spaces on the bats. So what I'm going to do last is I'm going to start at the bottom with my small paintbrush. And I'm just going to add some paint. I'm just going to flick it up like this, starting at the bottom and towards the top, I'm going to lift the paintbrush up and that will create a line that kinda looks like grass. Alright, do you see how I'm doing that? That you can see that on the video. Alrighty, So I'm just taking my paintbrush. I'm starting at the bottom and then I'm pulling that paint up. And as I come up, I'm lifting the paint brush up so that it is a little bit lighter as the paintbrush goes up the piece of paper. Alrighty friends, There we go. So we have our grass at the bottom. We have our silhouette of our Halloween seen, including a scarecrow, a tree, and some bats. I hope that you had a lot of fun with this project. I had a lot of fun teaching you. I will see you next time.
