1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi friends, how are you? I hope you're having a great day today. I'm excited about sharing this project with you. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that I designed, especially for kids. You do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all. To be successful with this project. I will teach you step-by-step all the steps that you need to take. Today, we are going to be creating this design that was inspired by artist Henri Matisse. Henri Matisse created a painting called The goldfish in 1912. Let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a piece of watercolor paper. You will need a set of watercolor paints in a cup or a bowl with clean water. You will also need a pencil with an eraser and a small paint brush for the outline of our design. And a larger paintbrush for the watercolor paints, you will need a paper towel. You will need some black acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is great to use if you want a paint that will not run around on your piece of paper, if you add water or watercolor paints, do it. After acrylic paint is dry, it will not spread around. The last thing that you'll need is a pallet to place your acrylic paint onto. I just like to use a small paper plate. So go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials. And I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Draw a Goldfish Design: In this step, we are going to draw our design with our pencil. So let's get started. If there's any point you feel like you need to do some erasing of your pencil. Go ahead and do that, that's fine. What we're going to do is use our pencil lightly because we want to make sure that the pencil lines are pretty discrete. When we add our watercolor paints, I am going to press a little bit harder with my pencil, so the lines are going to be a little bit darker. The reason why I'm going to do that is so that you can see on the video, you can see my lines. Okay. Does that sound good? Alright, the first thing that we're going to do is we're going to start in the middle of our piece of paper about right here. So if this is the direct middle, I'm going to go up a little bit, and it's going to be right in the center. So I'm going to start about right here. So this is maybe about five or 6 " down from the top. And that would be maybe about eight or 9 cm. And what I'm going to do is I'm first going to draw a curved line like this, right in the center. Now coming down from this curve line, we're going to make two lines, two straight lines. If they're not perfectly straight, That's okay. Now at the bottom of these lines, I'm going to connect them with another curved line. Alright, the next thing that I'm going to do is I'm going to draw some fish. I'm going to draw three fish inside of this space here at the bottom. So they're going to be pretty simple. They're going to be goldfish. So I'm going to draw one Goldfish. If there's a different type of a goldfish that you'd like to draw. Go ahead and do that. There's one Goldfish. Here's two goldfish In these are just curved lines. And then I'm adding a tail. I want to make sure that they're not tiny goldfish, tiny gold fissure, so cute. But for this particular project, we're not going to make them super tiny. So if you'd like me to explain that we have a curved line, we have another curved line. We have a straight line, a straight line, and then two slightly curved lines that are connecting for the tail. Now let's add a small dot for an eye for each of our fish, and then a small dot for the mouth. There we go. Now that we've drawn our fish, we're going to create the bottom of our little fishbowl. So we have our line here and we jump over or fish. And then we come out and we hit the corner of those two lines that are meeting right here. So that's the bottom of our fishbowl. Now let's go back up here. And we're going to make the water line. So we're going to come with a curved line and then a curved line going the other way that are going to, it's going to attach and close this shape right here. As you can see now, we have our three fish, we have the bottom. Then we also have our waterline right here. Okay? Now what we're going to do is we're going to create a table that are fish are sitting on. So I'm going to start about the middle here, and I'm going to end about the middle here. So I'm going to make a curve line coming down and around. It doesn't have to be perfect. Remember an art? It doesn't have to be perfect. Now, we're going to make the bottom of the table down here. I hope that you can see this space. So what we're going to do is we're going to make an oval. And then two lines that are coming down from this line right here, all the way to the bottom of your piece of paper. So it's going off the bottom of your piece of paper. Right? So that is the simple table and our fishbowl. Now let's add some detail to the drawing. And what we're going to do is start with the detail on the table. So we have some lemons and we have some lemon leaves. So they're going to be pretty long. And they're going to just be some curved lines with a line down the middle. So did you see how I did that? I'm a curved line. Curved line. Curved line book went off the paper. That's okay. Curve line coming in, current level, I'm coming down and then again. And then at the bottom here, I'm going to create a lemon, the bottom part of a lemon. If you have space up here, you can even make the top part of your lemon if you'd like to. Now as you can see, these lines here are going through our leaves and that's okay. After we finished with our entire drawing, we're going to be doing some erasing. So we're just going to leave that for now. Now I'm going to come down here and I'm going to create some more leaves. It's going to be a little bit more bench. So curved line coming up and then closing. Curved line, curved line, curved line, curved line. Then I'm going to make another lemon. Lemon shape here at the bottom. Come up like this. If you want to make a little topper right here, you can as well. Now let's make some lines here. Inside the leaves. Let's move down here to this space on the right bottom. I'm just going to put some flowers just to fill up this space a little bit. So I like to put daisies. I'm just going to put some really big daisies. And I'm not going to be super particular about these daisies. They might go off the piece of paper. That's okay. Here we go. Then I'm going to make some leaves around the disease just to fill up the space a little bit. Remember, I'm going to be covering these with paint. So I want to make sure that I don't get too detailed with the drawing. Now over here, we're going to put the arm part of a chair. So we're going to have a curve line coming down and then another curved line coming down off the paper, and then just some straight lines going down off the piece of paper. Now let's go back up to this space and add some more leaves. So I'm going to make an, a large leaf coming out right here and then I'll add some details. So I'll just put some veins here in the leaf. And you can really add any type of leaf that you'd like. I'm going to make this type right here. Some veins coming down. Remember we're not getting too detailed because we are going to be adding some paint onto our design. And if you get too detailed, it will just get covered up by the paint. Alright, so let me add one here, maybe one here. Again, I'm going over this line here, but that's okay because I'm going to be erasing that. Just add whatever kinds of leaves or flowers that you'd like to. This is where you can get creative with your artwork. Remember, this is your artwork so you get to do what you'd like. All right, I think I'll have some smaller leaves coming out here, some teardrop shaped leaves. Remember, remember friends, when you are creating art, it really doesn't need to make sense to anyone else except for you. So if you feel like doing anything at all, really, just do it. Because this is your art work. You get to do what you'd like to do. I'm going to make this kind of a flower with a stem. I'm just giving you some ideas of things that you can do. But of course, you could do whatever you'd like. The point is that we're going to fill in the space, just like matisse did. So I am just, that's what I'm doing at this point. I'm going to add some circles in his original. There were some circles up in the upper left-hand corner. And they weren't perfect circles. If you see a space that you'd like to fill in, you can just add some circles, e.g. here's a space over here. And if you want to add a circle or two, That's always a nice touch. I'm really happy with my design and I think I'm finished. If there's anything else that you would like to add to your design, go ahead and do that right now. In the next step, what we're going to do is we are going to be doing some erasing. So I will see you back here in the next video. 3. Step 2: Erase Pencil Lines: In this step we are going to be doing a little bit of erasing so that we don't get confused when we're covering our pencil lines with our black paint. So let's go ahead and take a moment to do that. So if you see here I have some pencil lines going through my leaves. I will want to erase those. And what I'm going to do is I'm just going to take a moment to look over my artwork and see if there's any erasing that I need to do. And I'm going to go ahead and erase. And if there's anything of any other lines that I need to create, I'm going to go ahead and do that. So I see here that there are things that I need to erase. Just going to go ahead and do that. And that will help me keep track of where I need to put my black paint. Alrighty friends, I'm finished with my erasing. And when we come back, we will be adding our black acrylic paint to our pencil design. 4. Step 3: Outline the Design With Black Paint: In this step, we're going to add some black acrylic paint to our design. So let's get started. I have about a quarter size dollop of paint and I think I'm going to add a little bit of water to that that will help it to spread around a little bit. So you can use one of your paint brushes to put a little bit of water inside that paint, and then let's mix it up. And then if you feel like there's a big glob of paint on your paintbrush. You can go ahead and wipe that off with your handy-dandy paper towel. I think I need a little bit more water. You don't want it to be too runny, thin and runny. But you want it to be thin enough so that it glides easily over your pencil lines. Remember when you're mixing your paint, we don't want to go all around your paper, your paper plate or whatever you have your paint on because it will waste your paint. So I have quite a bit of paint on here. I'm going to wipe that off. I think that's a really good consistency. And what I'm going to do is I'm just going to start going slowly, carefully, starting at the top of my piece of paper. And I'm just going to go over those lines, those pencil lines with my paint. And like I said, I'm going to go over those lines slowly and carefully so I do my best work. You don't have to be perfect with this. Just try your best and that is good enough. So what I'm going to do is I am going to speed up this video so you can watch me. It will just go very quickly. When we come back, we will talk about the next step. Alrighty friends. Wow, that was a lot of work, but it was worth it because it looks super cool. The last thing that I need to do is I need to create the eyes. I need to cover the eyes with my black paint and a little bit on the mouth. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to use the back of my paintbrush. I'm going to dip it into my paint. And I am going to use that back of my paintbrush to create the eyes and the little mouth. The mouth. And you might not even be able to see, but there's a little mouth right there. And the reason why I like to use the back of a paintbrush is because you can get a nice round dot. Usually. This one's not that round, but it still looks good. Alright, there we go. Now I'm going to make sure that I clean off my paintbrush, the back of it. And I'm going to clean off the front of the paintbrush. Because if you leave acrylic paint on a paintbrush, then it will dry and it will actually ruin the paintbrush. So you'll want to make sure that you wipe that off. And then after you wipe it off, you can go ahead and put the paintbrush into your water and that way it'll, it will get all the way clean. So in the next step, what we're going to do is we're going to add some watercolor paints. However, before we add our watercolor paints, we need to make sure that this painting is completely dry. And the reason why is if we don't, then our black can smear everywhere along with our paint. So we want to make sure that this is dry before we add any water or any watercolor paints. So I will see you back here after our paintings are dry. 5. Step 4: Paint the Design: In this step we are going to paint our design. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to add a drop or two of water into each pan of paint. And what this will do is it will soften up our paints so that they are easier for us to use. So I always encourage my students to go ahead and take a moment to do that step because it really helps. When we are ready to paint. There we go. Now that our paints or softening up, Let's turn our attention to our design. Here we have our goldfish design that is inspired by Henri Matisse. We have some goldfish here in a fish bowl surrounded by some leaves and plants sitting on a table. And there's a chair right down here in the left-hand corner. So you get to choose the colors that you'd like to use. You can go real bold with your colors and bright. And to do that, you'll need more paint and less water. Or you can use softer colors in that way that you do that the way that you create softer colors is that you use more water and less paint. Feel free to do some color mixing on your palette right here. That's always a good idea. Or you can do some color mixing directly on your piece of paper. It's up to you. The first thing that I'm going to do is I'm going to start by painting my fish orange. And the reason I'm going to paint my fish orange is because these are goldfish. Goldfish are orange. So I'm going to go ahead and do that. Then what I'm going to do next after I paint my goldfish, orange is, I am going to look towards the top of my water in this area. And I'm just going to paint some squiggly lines like this. And these are fish as you're looking from above. So there we go. Now at this point what I'm going to do is I'm just going to start painting the leaves and the table and the water. And then I will save the background, meaning this area that doesn't have any detail on it for the next step. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to go ahead and speed up this video. And I'm going to be painting. I'm going to be painting slowly and carefully. It's going to look like I'm painting quickly, but I'm really not. So you can go ahead and watch me as I am painting, and then you can get started on your own. Design. All right, friends, I'm finished painting my details and I'm really excited and happy about this painting because it is nice and bright and colorful and that's exactly what I was hoping for. So in our next step, what we're going to do is we're going to paint the background. So I will see you back here in the next video. 6. Step 5: Paint the Background: In this step we are going to paint the background. So let's get started. You get to choose the colors that you would like to paint your background. And I'm going to choose the colors that I think will look great. I'm going to use a little bit of pink and maybe some white to lighten up the pink a little bit. Because I want the background to be a little bit more muted. That means a softer color because all of the details are so bright. I might also use a little bit of orange and yellow. I'm not sure on that. We're just going to see what happens. So I'm just going to start painting. I'll prepare my pink paint over here in this. Well, you can see that I'm going to start out by putting some white here. Some watercolor sets do have white and some do not have white. So if you have white, you can actually experiment with that as well. But if you don't have white, That's okay. Just use the colors that you do have. So I'm going to go ahead and mix some paint, which is always fun. And then I'm just going to start painting. I feel like that's a little bit dark. So I'm going to add a little bit more white and a little bit more water. And I will keep testing it out until I'm comfortable with the color on my piece of paper. Alrighty friends. I'm finished with my painting. I think it turned out really great. I hope that you had a lot of fun with this project. I will see you next time.
