1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi friends, how are you? I hope you're having a great day today. I'm excited about sharing this project with you. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that I designed especially for kids. Students do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all to be successful with this project. I will guide students step by step through all the steps that they need to take. Today we are going to be creating this cute little penguin. Let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a sheet of watercolor paper. You will need a set of watercolor paints and a paint brush. You will also need a cup or a bowl with clean water and a black oil pastel or crayon. And a white oil pastel or crayon. You will also need a paper towel. Go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials. And I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Draw a Penguin Design: In this step, we are going to draw our Penguin design. Let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to pick up our black oil pastel or our black crayon. What we're going to do is we're going to start our drawing close to the top of our sheet of paper. Not all the way to the top, but pretty close. I'm going to go about 5 " down from the top of our piece of paper would be around eight or so centimeters. I'm going to make a straight line like this. Now, above this line, we're going to have a hat for a Penguin to wear. Below the line, we're going to have the face and the scarf and the body for our Penguin. Let's decide what we'd like to be on our hat, and you can make any type of hat that you'd like for your Penguin. I'm just going to make one of those hats that has the little ball at the top. Let me show you how I'm going to do that. I'm going to come up and then I'm going to come down. Then from this line here I'm going to come up and then I'm going to meet that first line like that. I hope that you can see that on the video. Now, I'm going to put one of those little balls at the top of that hat like that. Okay, now what I'm going to do is I'm going to come down here underneath the hat and I'm going to make a penguin face. I'm going to make a curve line, then a curve line, then under those curve lines and connecting those curve lines, I'm going to make a straight line like this. Make sure those lines are connected. There's a little space right here. This is the space for the Penguins face. This is going to be a scarf, so it's going to be covering the bottom part of our Penguins face. Okay, let's make some eyes. You can make any type of eyes that you'd like. I'm going to make some really big eyes. This is one E, this is another eye. Then I'm going to some pupils, round pupils. If they're not perfect, that's okay. Don't worry about that. All right, and then I'm going to make a little beak. That's cute. Okay, so part of the face is underneath this scarf, remember that? Okay, the next thing that we're going to do is we're going to make our scarf. We're going to come down with the straight line and down with the straight line. Then we're going to make a curve line connecting this line to this line. Just a slightly curved line like this. This is going to be the scarf. As you can see, it's starting to take shape. Now let's move over here onto the right hand side and we're going to make a curve line like this and then another curve line like this. And then close those up. Then if you'd like to add some fringe, you can go ahead and do that. That's always fun. Then we're going to do the same thing here. A line, a line coming out. And close that up. Then if you'd like to make some fringe, you can go ahead and do that. Can get a little bit crazy if you'd like. Right now. We have our hat and our actual Penguin and the scarf for our Penguin. Then right down here we're going to start making our Penguins body. This is more of a cartoon Penguin, it's not really realistic. We're going to make a big body. We're going to come around and then come back up. It's a curved line. We come down, it's a little bit flat at the bottom, and then we come back up. If you'd like to make your body more round, you can go ahead and do that. You can make your body thin or you can make your body thicker. It's completely up to you. Now what we're going to do is we're going to make some little wings coming out of the side, little wings. Then let's add a little bit of detail to the tummy. I'm going to make a really big curve line like this that just adds a little bit of detail. Now what we're going to do is we're going to make some feet down here at the bottom, curve lines like this. There's a different type of a foot that you'd like to make. Go ahead and make that. All right, take a look at your artwork. Is there anything else that you'd like to add? Would you like to add a design onto your scarf? I think I would. I think I'm going to add some stripes. I'm going to add some stripes on my cute scarf. That way it'll give it a little bit more detail. All right, now what we're going to do is we are going to create something for our Penguin to stand on. He's going to be standing on some snow, and I'm just going to make a line coming out from the Penguin's body and another line. It's not going to be perfect and that's okay. All right, and then if there's anything down here that you'd like to add, you can go ahead and do that. I think I'm going to leave mine plan because I like how it looks when there's snow on the ground and it's just all white. Now that we have our Penguin drawing, let's add a little bit of detail to the background. What we're going to do is add some snowflakes, because this is an area where it snows, that's where this Penguin lives. We're going to use our white oil, pestel, or crayon, to create some snowflakes behind the Penguin. Now this is white oil pestel, and you're not going to be able to see it on the white piece of paper, but you get to make any type of snowflake that you'd like. I'm going to show you a couple of different ways that you can make a snowflake, including my favorite way. I have a little piece of paper here, You can just make a snowflake like this with some lines going through each other and then maybe a little dot at the end of your snowflake. You can go ahead and make that type of a snowflake or you can make another snowflake. That's real simple. It's just basically a dot like this and you just fill it in with your oil pastel or caron. If there's a different way that you know to make those snowflakes, you can go ahead and do that. I'm going to make this type of snowflake. Like I said before, you're not going to be able to see me do that on my piece of paper, but I am going to do that. They're going to be pretty big. I'm going to make those lines and then I'm going to add some dots. I'm going to take a moment to do that. All righty friends, I'm finished drawing those snowflakes in the background. I'm not quite sure where they are right now because it's hard for me to see them. But once I add some watercolor paints to that background, then I will start seeing the snowflakes appear. In the next step, what we're going to do is we're going to start painting our design. 3. Step 2: Paint the Background: In this step, we are going to start painting our design. Let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we are going to add a drop or two of water into each of our pans of paint. What this will do is it will soften up the paints a little bit so that they are easier for us to. I always encourage my students to take that step because it really does help. All right, now that our paints are softening up, let's turn our attention to our design. Here we have our little Penguin who's out for a stroll. What we're going to do is we're going to focus on painting the background first. We're going to be painting the sky first. Decide on the color, more colors that you'd like to use to paint the sky. That's all that we're going to focus on right now. I'm going to use the color blue to paint my sky. I'm going to remember that my snowflakes might show up at some point. The reason why they show up is because the oil pastels or the crayons, they resist that paint. Or the color, that's when they start showing up. As you can see, I have a few right here and they're looking a little bit crazy because I couldn't see where I was putting those tots, but that's part of the fun of it. Sometimes art is a surprise. I'm going to go ahead and I'm going to paint all of the sky. And then I will be back in just a minute. All right, friends, I'm finished painting my sky and I think it looks really cool. I like the way that my snowflakes look. They're a little bit off, but that's okay. I just couldn't quite see what I was doing, but I think it looks really fun. What we're going to do when we come back in the next video is we are going to start painting our Penguin and the hat and the scarf. I will see you back here in the next video. 4. Step 3: Paint the Penguin: In this step, we are going to paint our Penguin and the hat, and the scarf. Let's get started, because our Penguin is going to be black and white. I'm going to paint the scarf and the hat first because that black paint is pretty powerful. When we rinse our paint brush, it will get a lot of the black inside of our water. I'm going to go ahead and paint my scarf and my hat. First, I've already decided I'm going to use the colors pink and orange because I like those two colors together. All right, friends finish painting my hat and my scarf, and my beak. And remember, you can use any colors that you'd like. You don't have to use the same colors that I'm using of. All right, so now what we're going to do is we are going to paint the actual Penguin. We're going to leave parts of this penguin white. And then the other parts we are going to paint black. Let me tell you the parts that we're going to leave. We, we're going to leave eyes white and the Tommy white. Then I'm going to leave this little puffy cloud on the end of my hat white as well. Then for the feet, I'm going to make a light gray. And then for the body, the wings, and the face, I'm going to paint black. All right, I'm going to prepare some black paint. And the way that I do that is I'm going to add some water to one of my wells. Because if you use black straight out of the pan, it will be very dark. It's a good idea to lighten it up just a little bit. I'm going to add a little bit more water and then just a little bit of black paint. See how powerful it is. I'm going to paint these little feet down here, a gray, The Penguins that I have seen on television. I see the gray feet. I'm going to add now some more black to make that a little bit darker. Let's see, let's test that right here. Oh, I'd like it a little bit darker than that. I'm going to add a little bit more, just have to keep testing to see what works for you. Oh, I think that's perfect. It's not too light and it's not too dark. All righty, friends, I'm taking a look around to see if there's any other paint colors that I'd like to add. And I think I'm done. I hope that you had a lot of fun with this project. I had a lot of fun teaching you, and I will see you next time.
