1. Introduction: The Novation Launchpad is a very unique midi controller. Wide range of musician, music producer, Use it for quite a few applications. Such as a midi sampling machine, midi controller for music productions. And many use it to make fantastic Launchpad cover on the Internet. And it has been an ongoing trend for quite some years, especially on YouTube. Many great artists such as Madeon, Nev, M4Sonic, Kaskobi, etc, have made a lot of amazing Launchpad cover and mash-up over the years. They are the people who inspired me into learning how to play a launchpad at the very beginning. And many years later, I decided to put this course together in teaching you how to be your launchpad light show. Hi there, my name is Javen and I will be your instructor of this course in teaching you how to build a great Launchpad lightshow, with Ableton. I'm a music producer, I composed and produced music for a short firms, albums, soundtracks, and also making music related content including a Launchpad lightshow, as well as writing articles on Goodnoisemusic.com. Feel free to check it out if you want. In this course, I'm going to teach you the three methods that you should know in building a Launchpad lightshow. We will go through the process of this method and you'll get to learn everything you need to know in order to build a good Launchpad lightshow. 00:01:26.615 --> 00:01:28.880 The reason why are there different ways in building a Launchpad cover is because each of them could be applied in difference scenario. And also there are some pros and cons in using each of these methods as well, which I will talk more about all the details in the upcoming lessons. By the end of this class, you should have a very good understanding in knowing what a Launchpad lightshow is. And to be able to make a Launchpad cover all by yourself. This class is for all level musicians, producers, and music lovers. If you have ever watched someone performed a launchpad lightshow before, and it got you interested about knowing how it works and what's the concept behind it, then this class is for you. I'm really looking forward to have you in this course. So without further ado, let's jump right into it. 2. Getting Ready & Course Project: Before we go into our main lessons, there are a few things you need to know to get you better prepared for this course. In order to make a launchpad lightshow, you need to have the Ableton Live software As of the time I'm making this video, I think the Apple Logic Pro just made their software comparable with the novation product as well. But there doesn't seem to be a way to make a launchpad slideshow with the software yet, I'm not sure if they are going to add those function in the future, but might as well to keep an eye on their upcoming updates. If you have already have a launchpad, you should have gotten your Ableton Live software that comes along with it, which is the free and most basic version of the Ableton Live, get the full version if you can. If not, you can always start with the standard or lite version They're all capable of building a launchpad lightshow with the method one and method two, that I'm going to teach you in the upcoming lessons, for method three, you will need to have Max for Live, which is a platform to build your own VST instruments and effects. It comes with the Ableton suit, but you could buy it separately as well. There are a couple of plugins to help you speed up the whole process and make thing more efficient. I will talk about it again in the later lessons. No matter which Launchpad you have, the operation of these devices are more or less the same. They all comes with RGB light system, which gives you 128 colours to choose with, except the older version of Launchpad mini, Launchpad S. and Launchpad classic, unfortunately, they do not have the RGB light system, but only with the tri-colour LEDs. So you are limited to varying intensities of yellow, red and green with these devices. But not to worry about this first, because the method I'm gonna to teach you could be applied in any of these Launchpad you have. Our course project would be creating a one minute Launchpad lightshow by the end of this class. With any of the methods you'll learn here, it could be the first verse and chorus or any part of that song. Building a light show is not very complicated, but it could be a little time-consuming. So I think it's better not to spend too much time striving for perfection first, because the main purpose of this course here is to start making progress and get some feedback along the way. Most people create a launchpad lightshow, with an EDM song or fast-paced music, which is great. But you don't have to be limited by that. After learning the skills you need, just be creative and you could definitely apply it into any genre that you like. Once you have finished your first launchpad lightshow, please feel free to share your work to the project section and seek help from me or the group. You could do it by clicking on this green button right here to create a project. After that, just upload any contents that is related to your project right here. Let's just take this course as an example. Eventually, your uploaded project will show up at the student project section below. If you have any questions, you can also comment in the discussion section right here. And that's all for this lesson lets get ready. And I will see you in the next video. 3. Setting Up: Launchpad & Ableton: In this video, we are going to set up your Novation Launchpad and Ableton once you have entered the software Ableton Live, go to the upper left corner here under live, look for preferences. If you are a Mac user, the common comma would be the shortcut key. Just go ahead and click on it So here you need to go into tap link midi. If you haven't plugged in your Launchpad yet, now is the time to get your Launchpad connected If you have already done that, make sure you have turned on your device like this So that it will be detected. It doesn't matter whether you plugged in before you open the section or after. As long as your device is connected, go to the first row here and look for the name of the launchpad you have. In my case, I'm using our Launchpad Pro. So I will choose a Launchpad Pro. make sure you select midi input and output as well, like this. Right here. And I have another Launchpad X here I will choose the launchpad X too And for a MK3 device, you will have the DAW out here and midi out DAW in and midi in here. Choose the DAW in an out if you're using a Mac and midi in midi out for Window users. Okay, down here into the midi ports section. All of the buttons here should be turned on. Besides the sync button rows here, they should be off. No matter which Launchpad device that you are using, They should be set up like this. And also you will not find an user button on the Launchpad X and like the Launchpad Pro has the user mode is being selected when you are making a light show. So if you are using a Launchpad X here, you will have to select the programmer mode by clicking on the session buttons here. After that select the orange button at the bottom *right* corner here. Then you will see the programmer letters show up. And select the legacy mode If you want to play the project file that was created with an older version of Launchpad than MK3. you could select the legacy mode by selecting the purple button here click on the purple button then you will see the legacy letters show up So for now, we will choose the programmer mode In the next video, I will teach you a few ways to get the right BPM of your song. Then we will jump into our core lessons. 4. Setting Up: BPM: Before we actually jump into the technical aspect of building a launchpad lightshow in Ableton you need to first choose a song to cover. It's great that If you could find a stems of the songs you want to cover sometimes the producer may share the stems or multitracks of their songs on the Internet, for their fans to download or do a remix for the song. But in most cases, you will hardly find the stems on the Internet, It's not a norm that a producer will often share it so that's okay if you can't find it, just move on, we could just use the MP3. Once you have opened your Ableton Live session after that, go into the arrangement view. As you can see, there are section view and arrangement view here for you to choose with just click on this one after that drag in the song onto the audio track. Double-click it. Make sure that warp button is off If the warp button is on your audio file will sync to the project tempo and it will stretch or squeeze the audio file. You don't want that to happen. So just make sure the warp button is off. If you have already known what the BPM of your song is, just type in the BPM at the tempo section here. If you do not know what the bpm is, one of the simplest way to find out is to search on Google. Just type in the name of the song, plus BPM That should be several sites providing such informations. Just click on one of them Alright, now we got the BPM that we were looking for, After that, just go back into your Ableton and type it in. Another way for you to find out what the BPM of your song is just to to tap on the tap tempo button, that's next to your bpm. It's not the fastest way, but I think It's the more practical way to do it. Because sometime for certain song, if it's not popular enough, it may not be easy for you to find the BPM on the Internet. So I think it's important for you to know this tactic so that you have a different option when it comes to finding the BPM of your song. Before we actually do that, first trim out the song at the very beginning If you've got the MP3 usually there's a little space at the very beginning of the song. If you don't trim that out, even though you get the BBM right, your metronome is gonna be off. We have already got the right BPM from Google earlier, but for now, just pretend that we don't know what the PBM is let's listen to the song together and get the feeling of how fast the song is. It's pretty close, kind of there. There are still some works to do. After that, what I would do is usually to look at the audio track and see where the down beat is. Normally it's more easier if we look at the chorus or second verse where the beat drops. Ya.. maybe I could work around with this part. Move to the tempo around, It's going to change where the beat fall in the grid. But don't look at the tempo, because we already know what the right tempo is just look at the audio track until the transient line up right at the bars. I think It's good now. And here it is, 150 again. but I think this part might not be that obvious. Let me find another part. Ya, this is good. So it's apparent that where each of the down beat is Let's just randomly move around the tempo. Somewhere like 147. Okay, Now we move the Now let's move around until it fits to the grid I think it's good now. Ya, it's 150. I wasn't looking at I wasn't looking at the tempo, so I'm not cheating. So here we got the, we got the right tempo again. I don't know if you can hear the metronome here. Just in case you don't know, here is where your turn up the volume of your metronome. Go into the section view here, you will see a headphone logo that's underneath the solo So just turn it up and play it again. So this is how you get the tempo It works most of the time, unless there are some tempo changes in the song. There's just my way of doing it Feel free to try with your method If you know there's a better way to do it That's it for this video. In the next video we're going to talk about the first method in building the launchpad lightshow. 5. Method One: With Midi Clips : Alright, it finally comes to our method 1 video that we are actually going to start making our launchpad lightshow. In this video, I'm going to teach you how to build a launchpad cover with midi clips. I think this is by far the easiest way in building a launchpad lightshow, you do need to use the midi effects or buying the expensive Ableton suite like the method three video that I'm going to show you in another video in order to do it And the good new is you do not need to spend days or weeks in practicing your launchpad cover with this method as well. It's gonna save you a lot of time, especially at the very beginning stage when you just want to get started and start seeing the end result as soon as possible This could be the way to go. And of course you still have to put in all the creative how work in building your launchpad lightshow, make sure to check out the project and resources section to download all the needed files for these lesson And you could definitely start working on your course project with this method as well Alright, before getting into it, let me show you one of the example I have here. This is one of the launchpad cover I did earlier although it looks kind of complicated It seems like a lot of things are going on here but it's actually very straightforward what you're gonna do is actually drawing midi notes onto your midi clips and play together with the audio track. Each of these midi notes are by default assigned to designated buttons on your LaunchPad. Whatever notes are being played, the designated buttons will be lighten up Let me show you a bit of this project here in order to give you a better understanding of what I have just said. This is a very fun remix. I made with the theme song of this cartoon called Crayon Shin Chan I don't know if you have watched this cartoon before. I grew up watching Shin Chan so I decided to make a remix and launchpad lightshow with it If you want to watch the full version you could find it on my channel. But for now, let's move on to how we could make a launchpad lightshow like this. After dragging in the song and created your midi track. First, you need to set up your midi track to receive input and output from your launchpad. Then arm your midi track for recording Next, we are going to create a midi clips that cover the entire length of the song. Or if you plan on assigning this light effects to a touch of a button for you to perform with. You can make each midi clips to a size of button Since you would need one light effects per button press But for now, let's just create one midi clip And right-click to select, insert midi clips. Or you can use the shortcut keys command Shift M to do it. There are two ways for inserting your midi notes. First of all, you could just use the pencil tool in the Ableton to draw it by clicking here Or you can press on the B buttons on your keyboard and your pencil tool will show up Then just simply draw with it. Whenever you press play in Ableton you will notice that there will be a white bar lines move across your piano roll whatever notes are currently being played as this white bar lines move through your piano roll, it will lights up your buttons on your Launchpad Just like the example I showed you earlier. If you want to change the colour of the midi notes on your launchpad, you could do it by changing the velocity of the notes from one to 127 each of this number represents a different colour. You could change them one by one or just select all and move them together at the same time. As the graph I attach here you will see what the colours are I will put this in the project and resources section for you to download as well so after watching this video, please remember to look for it. Another way to do it is just simply tap on your launchpad and hold onto it Then press the right arrow buttons on your keyboard and make sure your midi editor preview button is on It will only works when the button is on It will create the midi notes on your piano row and it allows you to draw multiple midi notes at once. I find it much easier and faster by doing it this way think of this bar as frames just like how old cartoon and videos used to be made you are creating a picture within each single given bars here when it comes to creating the light show effects you could be as creative as you want but there are few functions here you may want to first get yourself familiar with Often time, you may find yourself wanting to speed up the light effects to better fit the energy of your song and adding a little punchiness to it. To do that, you could select your desire notes and go to the top here where there will be this midi stretch marker arrow then move it left or right to make it slower or faster or you can go down to the bottom left corner here You will notice these two buttons have a number two on them click on the colon two to half the length of your light effect and essentially make it two times faster. or go by selecting the asterisk to double the length of your notes to make it two times slower. Just like this. another thing you could do to make your light effects look more interesting. You can go down to the bottom left corner here and click this reverse button to reverse the effects that you just made and that does exactly what you think It would do. and for the inverse button here, essentially take all the light effect you made and flips it a 180-degree to make a symmetrical effect. Let me show you a better example here what I mean is that you could copy it to the other side like this then inverse it and move it to the top move it to the top of the original one so let me first change them to the same colour so that's how I use the inverse button just get creative with these tools you can make tons of crazy effects with just these tools That's the method 1 in building your launchpad lightshow go and try it out and be creative and feel free to share your progress in the project or discussion section as well it's a very good place for you to get some feedback from others while you are making progress. In the next video, we're going to talk about another method in building your launchpad lightshow 6. Method Two: With Midi Effects (Setup & Sampling): In this video, I'm going to teach you another method to build your launchpad cover. we are gonna be using the midi effects to build your lightshow this time you could also make a lot of fun light effects with it Although this may be a little bit more complicated than the previous method I taught you. It's not that it's difficult 00:00:25.290 --> 00:00:27.075 there are these more works to do If you want to perform your slideshow with the Launchpad this is something that you need to know, but I will also teach you a much simpler method in the later video For that, It requires you to use the plug-ins from Max for Live which is only available in Ableton suite you could buy it separately if you already have the standard version I will talk more about all the details in the method three lesson before we jump right into the method 2 and 3 we need to first do some little setting in your Ableton. one of the major difference that separate them from the method one is that we are going to deal with samples with these two methods. That means we are gonna split the MP3 we got into many short audio clips and assign them into each of these buttons here so that we could perform with it. Once you have opened a new project file and created your midi tracks, first you need to arm your sample midi tracks so that whatever midi inputs that we are receiving will trigger the samples that we are going to set up later after that, you need to set up your light midi track to display output by changing the input to in and output to the launchpad that you are gonna be using Next, you have to choose the midi channel for your launchpad Depends on which Launchpad you have If you are using a Launchpad X or Mini leave it at one, mk2 or pro leave it at six right here I have a launchpad pro so I will select the output to launchpad pro and the midi channel to 6 after setting up for your launchpad you should see some light feedbacks on your launchpad when you tap on it. Like this. Only if you have done it correctly. and for MK three user, whether you have a Launchpad X mini mk3 or pro mk3 you should be selecting the channel 1. I will include this information in a document for you to download in the project and resources section. go ahead and look for it if you want. Next, let's drag in the instrument rack onto your sample midi track so that it will trigger a sample when you press a button click here to expand your instrument rack then drag in your drum rack onto the instrument rack right now is time for you to drag in your samples into the drum rack but as you can see, we have only these many buttons here on the drum rack they may seems many here but actually is still far from enough If you want to chop or 3 to 4 minute song into samples. eventually you are gonna have hundreds of samples for one song Because if you are chopping them by every few bars in average each of this samples are around one second or lesser So one page of drum rack is definitely not enough That's why we drag in the instrument rack at the first place so that we can add more drum rack onto this instrument rack and assign them into different pages. So how we change our pages on Launchpad is by using these buttons here we will assign each of them into different page Normally I would just create 8 drum racks and assign them to these buttons at the very beginning So I'm going to assign a few more drum rack here What I would do is to duplicate the drum rack here. I think we have 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, maybe one more. then rename them Alright now we have eight different pages here Then I will go into chain to move them to different pages This one is one, this one is two First one is 0, I will move them one by one. And you may notice that there is this light blue bar here this is to show you which page you are currently on when you switch in between pages this blue bar will move along. So how you are going to assign them is by right-clicking it and map to my macro one When you move the macro one here It will simultaneously move the light blue bar as well After that what you gonna do is to connect it to your launchpad go and press on the midi button here After that, click on the chain selector, the macro one here. Now you have to go to your launchpad and press on the first and last button at the same time. After that, you will see a midi mapping thing show up here that means you are now connected but we're not finished yet. You still have to manually change the number you see here leave the minimum at zero and maximum at seven if you don't do that when you press on this button they will not on the page that you want them to be. For example, when I press on this button, you will see they are off. They are not on the seven pages because they are divided, the 127 is divided by eight buttons So the so that it will not assign to the page that you want that's why we want to set the maximum number to 7 after setting that now this eight buttons are assigned to all these pages here and also if you are using a launchpad X or any mk3 launchpad make sure your firmware is up to date And also you have selected your legacy mode within your session mode This one. After assigning your launchpad to Ableton what we're gonna do now is to sample your song At this point, you should have already gotten the right tempo If you have not yet done that be sure to watch the video four which I've talked about the two ways in getting the right BPM earlier Now as everything is lined up to the lines we are ready for their cutting. There are actually no rules when it comes to samples your song you could cut each samples into whatever length you want them to be but generally we will still try to keep them short like a few bars length for each clips. There could still be some longer clips for certain part of the song, such as a breakdown or outro, etc. Eventually is all depending on how fast you want to play it Now let's take this song as an example. How I would cut it is that usually I would first listen to it get the glimpse of the energy of the song and imagine how I would plan to design a light effects beforehand. Then I will start cutting the song and design the light effects along the way just go with the flow some people like to chop the whole song into many different pieces before they start doing any lightshow editing There's really no right or wrong but I prefer to do it this way because oftentimes I find myself coming up with different ideas than how I originally thought I wanted it to be. So I think it's better not to sample the whole song first or at least sample it by sections maybe I will chop the whole intro first then move on to the next part only When I'm done with the light show design for the intro that's just my way of doing things. You could definitely chop the whole song first as long as the workflow makes more sense to you. Let's take this part as an example listen to it and cut it into multiple samples How we could split the audio file is by right-clicking and select the split here or you could just use the shortcut key command E to do that. After cutting the song into the length that you want drag it onto where you want it to be. then when you tap on it it will trigger the samples For instance, if I want to assign it to this button, then I would drag it to where I want it to be I will drag this audio file here to this D2 right here but there's one problem here You will realise that every time when you drag in the samples onto your drum rack the whole song will be placed to the button If you have a 100 of samples in this song that means the song will be placed on a 100 times into your drum rack that will take up a lot of CPU usage Your computer might get slower because of that so the solution here is to make these clips their own samples you can do it by right-clicking it and select consolidate or just click on the shortcut key command J to do that Every time when you chop the sample just don't forget to do this step Now, we try to drag in the sample again right now you will only get the selection of the audio clips you want. and another problem is that when you look at the end of each samples you put in the very little end here is cutoff. This is because your snap button is on just turn it off every time after you have drag in the sample Last but not least, I have one more very important tips to improve your launchpad cover here once you have done with all the steps that I just told you to do Go down to the bottom right here You will see a fade in and fade out here. And yup, you have guessed it right we are going to add some slight fade in and fade out to each of this samples just a little tiny bit to it so that you won't hear the clipping sound in between samples while you are performing maybe 4 to 5 mili seconds is good. Usually I will put it around 5 milliseconds. Yeah, I think 5, 6 milliseconds is good. After adding a lot of samples If you don't do that, most probably you will hear some clipping sounds in-between If you want each of the samples you play here to have consistent volume. You could turn down the velocity here so that every time when we play it has the same volume If you don't do that, you won't get the same amount of volume so usually I will turn off the velocity so that when I'm performing each of the sample clips I tap on has a consistent volume Alright. That's pretty much about it. In the next video is going to be one of the most exciting part we are going to make light show effects again with the midi effects this time. So, I will see you in the next video then. 7. Method Two: With Midi Effects (Lightshow): Welcome to the second part of method 2 lesson Before we continue moving on, please make sure you have already watched the last video that we talked about how to set up your sample midi track and the midi effects we are going to need for lightshow building our velocity, note length, pitch, chord and arpeggiator First you need to drag in the midi effect rack onto your light channel turn on these two buttons to show your chain list and macro control then click on the chain similar to the setting we did for the channel track We have to map this light blue thing to macro one as well After mapping that, - then hold down the two buttons here to assign the chain selector to these eight patterns on your launchpad Make sure you remember that change the maximum number to seven also Just like what we did in the last video then create eight more chain here and rename them from page one to page eight, and move them one by one to the different pages The next step is to drag in another midi effect rack onto your page button then we will start making light effects with each chain that we are going to create here Click on the key button for instance, I will create a chain here click on the button you want to assign your light effects into hold onto it. wait ya let me first select the right page now you'll see the button you press lits up here then double-click the green bar After that your light effects will only show up when you tap on the button you assign Right now, I will drag in the midi effects to show you how I use them The velocity effect is used to change the colour of your light effect you could refer to this chart here to see what are the colours of these numbers I will put this into the project and resources section for you to download as well First set the range to zero After that move the out high control to change the number to the colour you want The pitch button is used to move the light effects, add the pitch button to the light chain and move the pitch control around to where you want it to be chord is kind of similar to the pitch, but it is actually a duplicate machine. For instance, you could use the first knob here, the first control here to duplicate the original lights you have. So 1, 2, 3, 4, one more note will be added here, I could add more here it allows you to copy the notes up to six times. You could even add another chord effect on top of that and duplicate all the nodes form the first chords effect. It's a very useful tool to have For example, I could copy all these four nodes here to the next step. Turns out they will be eight notes on the launchpad if I continue adding on so that's how you create a light effect with the chord effect. Note length controls how long the light will display You can make it last up to a 60 seconds or as fast as a 10 milliseconds. The arpeggiator allows you to add movement to your light effect with these five main control you have here You can see the, you can't really see the movement going if you only adding one arpeggiator So usually I will use it with the chord effect. For instance, if I add a few more notes here, after that I add the arpeggiator next to it you see the lights going up like this because I set it to up If I change it to down the light will move down If I select up down, it will go up and down the rate controls how fast it moves so let me turn it up a little bit so it moves faster right now The gate controls the time of each lights in the arpeggiator stays lit for Repeat, adding the amount of repetition to the light effect For instance, if I set a number to 2, it only goes up and down twice Steps which control the position changes in one repetition Distance controls how far each light steps move You will understand them better in no time when you play around with it Let me give you some of the example of the combination of using these midi effects here. for instance, if you want to make a light effects like this these are the combination you would need let me break it down for you. like at first I will use the chord effects to create the notes that I need so I added six more notes here with the chord effect after that I added the arpeggiator I selected the up-down these are my setting and I added another chord effect to add another three more notes next to it and one more chord effect to double what I did then, velocity to change the colours of my light effect so that's pretty much about it Alright let me show you another example I have here So how to make a randomized light effects like this? I first added an arpeggiator and I turn up the steps all the way to change the position So without the steps is just like this Yeah, this one control how fast it is so with the arpeggiator, but with the steps all the way up, it will turns out to be like this. After that I added another chord to just simply add more notes randomly after that I added another pitch change the positions just to move the notes a little bit to how I want it to be. and I added the note length to sustain the notes a little bit longer then I added one more velocity effect to add some colour randomly to make it looks more colourful and unpredictable so this is how this light effect was done Alright, let me show you one more light effects I have for you here this one is a little bit more complicated because I add one more midi effect rack on top of these two midi effect rack In order to make a more complex light effect So let me break it down for you what I've done here let me first turn them off turn all these midi effects off Alright, this is the selected note and at first I added a chord because I want, I want to add some movement to it after that So I have to first create the notes for the future movements I chose the up-down here these are my setting after that I added the velocity effect to change the colour to pink then this is where it started getting more complicated actually It is not very complicated just that I added one more midi effects on top of that so that I could assign more notes onto each of these notes Does it make sense to you? Like, for instance, I added one more note when it moves to the second note, right here So when it goes to the third note I added two more note here The fourth note, there will be three more notes Fifth with another two more notes Sixth, with one more note and seventh without any additional notes on that so that's pretty much about it. with this midi effect rack gives me the flexibility to add more notes onto each of these. it's not that complicated actually just that you need to understand how to use another midi effect rack on top of your effect for that, it requires you to have the Max for Live to do it I will talk about all the details again in the upcoming lesson, you could decide which method you want to use for your first launchpad lightshow then 8.
