What’s better than hand lettering? 3D lettering of course. This is a class on creating 3D lettering with watercolor paints using white space in clever and intriguing ways. You will learn not only how to bring your lettering to the third dimension but also how to add more interest with negative space techniques using watercolors.
In this class you will learn:

What negative space is and how it’s used in art

Essentials to get started and get comfortable with hand lettering.

The differences between calligraphy, monoline lettering and faux calligraphy and how to achieve each technique.

How to scale up your lettering to create full-page lettering pieces.

How to convert any lettering to 3D lettering using a 5-step process.

Different watercolor paint consistencies, their properties and applications to help you make informed paint consistency decisions.

Brush control techniques to paint tight spaces effectively.

Where to look for inspiration.

How to combine lettering, 3D sketching and watercolor negative painting skills to create a stunning piece of art.

This class is designed for students at any skill level. In each area, I teach by reinforcing the basics to hand-hold beginners but also sprinkle in a lot of useful insight for intermediate to advanced level artists to take their work up another notch.
Throughout this class, you will find me throwing in a lot of pro tips based on my personal journey towards mastering these very same skills. So skip a lot of the intermediate frustration by learning directly from my mistakes and experiments. I’ve also included a ton of downloadable resources that you will have access to just by joining this class.
So if you are a lettering artist looking to take your work to the next dimension (pun totally intended) or you want to explore adding watercolors to your skill set- then this class is definitely for you. Similarly, if you’re a watercolor artist who was always shy of dipping your toes into the world of lettering- you’ve come to the right place.
Why Negative Space 3D Lettering with Watercolors?

Combining these three skills not only lets you create stunning pieces of art but also helps you develop your skills using perfectly bite-sized pieces of knowledge.

3D sketching and negative painting perfectly compliment each other by creating interesting constraints among themselves thus nudging you to think outside the box without feeling the pressure to innovate.

Artwork that involves clever use of negative spaces is always exciting. Search for images of negative space logos. Aren’t they super cool?

When you use white space to create letters, you engage with the viewer of your artwork in a more exciting way. There’s mystery in your art while you suggest to the viewer just what they need to spark a thought and leave the rest up to their imagination.

Just like most things, taking anything to a 3D space is an instant trick to elevating its interest factor. The human brain likes to see things in 3D.

So let’s get started - see you in class!
