About This Class

Are you stuck in an emotion? In this 15-minute Art Therapy class I will show you how you can "draw and paint" yourself into different emotions and to experience how powerful your thoughts are!

In this class, we will explore how emotions influence our artistic choices—from colors and shapes to gestures and lines—by creating an Emotion Map for six different feelings: joy, anger, sadness, fear, love, and peace.

Through this intuitive painting exercise, you’ll discover how to "feel" yourself into an emotion and visually express it. More importantly, this process will empower you to recognize that just as you can think yourself into a feeling, you can also think yourself out of it. Whenever you feel stuck in a certain emotional state, this exercise will serve as a tool to help you shift your mindset with ease.

WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?

Creatives & Artists – who want to explore emotional expression through art.
Anyone Interested in Mindfulness & Self-Reflection – looking for a simple, creative way to process emotions.
Beginners & Non-Artists – no prior art skills are needed, just a willingness to explore.
Art Therapists & Educators – who want to incorporate expressive exercises into their practice.
Anyone Feeling Emotionally Stuck – this class offers a tool for shifting emotional states through creativity.

Warning: the class is not replacing professional help when it comes to mental health issues. Please, if you have serious problems, look for professional help!

What you’ll need:

  • A digital drawing app (like Procreate) or traditional art supplies

  • A comfortable space to create freely

  • No prior art skills are needed—just an open mind and a willingness to explore your emotions through creative expression.

The exercise can be done with traditional media, but you need to adjust the steps for yourself - or follow the next steps:

Recommended steps for traditional media:  I would suggest to use any water-soluble  media like watercolors or gouache for painting the background, then either the same media or markers/crayons for painting shapes, and coloured pencils/pens/markers for painting lines. Feel into the emotion and paint the emotional representations of the feelings listed above. At the end create a final piece representing your current state of emotions (not thinking yourself into a specific one, if that makes sense:)

By the end of the exercise, you will feel better, empowered and have a beautiful abstract piece of art.

Join me in this 15-minute creative journey and experience the power of art as a tool for self-awareness and emotional transformation!

I can't wait to do this with you! Let's just get started!

1. Introduction: Hello, and welcome to today's 50 minutes of art therapy. Today we are going to create an emotion map, and we are going to then map our emotions. The point of this exercise today is going to be to show you that you can think your way into an emotion. So you are not controlled by your emotions. You can take control over your emotions, if that makes sense. Again, we are going to have so much fun. We are going to experiment with mainly procreate brushes. We are going to smudge, we are going to play with colors and work into Italy. So again, perfection is not our guest in this art party, and we are going to have so much fun. If you don't know me, hi, I'm the art mother. And if you need more info about me, check out my page. But right now, I'll just get started, so grab your iPad and see you inside the class. 2. The Emotion Map: Hello, and welcome to today's 15 minutes of art therapy. In this lesson, we are going to create an emotion map. The way we are going to do it is that we are going to spend a minute or two to create an abstract painting of an emotion. We are going to use colors, shapes and lines. These are the three things that we are going to use, and we are going to experiment with the procreate brushes. So we are going to have fun again because that's a point, okay. The other point is to show you that you can think yourself into an emotion. Okay? So the point is that you are not your emotions. You can control your emotions with your thinking. As we are going to go through this exercise, you will experience that when we are talking about anger, for example, you are going to think about colors and shapes and lines, and you will feel that emotion in yourself. You will create a visual representation of that emotion right now onto a canvas, and then we are going to move to sadness. You will be able to just fell into that and then to fear and then to love and lastly into peace. And this is a really nice exercise to go through different emotions. And in the end, we are going to create a final emotional artwork to represent how you are feeling right now without thinking yourself into an emotion. Okay? So, see you in the next video, we're going to start with the first two, and yeah, let's get started. 3. Joy&Anger: So what you will need is to go to the gallery and create a new screen sized canvas. Now, again, we are going to throw colors, shapes into it, but I would really love you to also use smudging with your fingers and painting with your fingers because it will bring you more close into what you are actually painting and creating and to those emotions. So I guess automatically it is turned off in the gesture controls to be able to paint with your fingers. Just make sure that you go to the wrench button, go to preferences, gesture controls, and have the enable painting with finger turned on. The toggle and hit done. Now you should be able to draw with your finger and then smudge with your finger, et cetera. Let's start with joy. Another thing that will help you to work more quickly is to click on the palette, hold down and take this little palette down here. Choose the wheel or this one as you feel like intuitive. For each emotion, let's just choose three colors. Three colors, one shape, and then we are going to play with lines. Oh, joy. I'm going to use a solid brush to throw in colors. So I will go to the inking or yeah the inking brushes, and I will use the dry ink, I guess, yes. That has a little bit of texture. And I will just throw in colors. So for me, joy, when I think of joy, I think of this very pink color. And for some reason, I really love this minty color for joy as well. And let's choose a third color, and I love light purple. Pastel purple. Cool. And I will choose brush for smudging. I love this ink roll. And I will just smudge it together. And now, be a little bit aware that when you are thinking of an emotion, what dynamics do you have when you are smudging or painting these colors away, okay? So I have this very smooth and positive movement in my head when I'm thinking about positive emotion. Now I will draw a shape that is going to be light lavender, and I will just add this shape here. Choose the technical pen and completely white, and I will just add lines. Yeah, I guess this is my joy today. So I'm going to make it small and just place it to the side. And the second emotion is going to be anger. So I will click new layer, and I'm going to think about anger just for a second. And when I think of anger, I definitely think about some dark red. W find brush for smudging. Materials clover. Let's see. Oh, yeah. This works fine. I'm missing black now, so I will add triangles. That's what represented for me in this emotion. Maybe some lines. And this is my anger today. Let's move on to sadness in the next video. 4. Sadness & Fear : Okay, let's move on. So I will create a new layer. And for me, sadness is dark blue. I am just totally randomly picking up these brushes, and actually, this is an amazing opportunity to try them out and then see how they work in your illustration work later. Yeah. Gray, blue and black. And let's see a brush for smudging. I go to elements and to flames. Wow. Yeah. This is definitely sadness for me. And I will add a geltin So mimes. So dots. Okay. And the next one was fear. Black gray. And for the smudging, let's see, abstract burnt tree. And for lines, I will choose white. And I will just draw into these shapes. And in the next video, let's move on to more positive ones like love and peace. 5. Love & Peace: So when I think about love, I think about bink. Pink. And, you know, what? Green. Love Inch. Let's try to smudge these together with a Leatherwood Aurora. Let's try. Wow, this is fun. Yeah, this is how love looks like. Can you see like choosing these random brushes can give so much fun. Maybe I'll just add some lines around. So cool. I will make it small. And the last one is bees. Oh, you'll create a new layer, and what color is bees for me? Definitely. Some grayish colors and greens. Greens. I don't know. For this, I will choose I will keep the studio pump. Yeah. These three colors are peace for me, and for smudging, I will choose leather wood. Yeah. This feels peaceful. I will paint into it. Like this. Like this. Make it small and just write the emotions. I know this looks pretty random, but just think about it. You just thrown colors, random shapes quickly. You know, the point why I want you to work so quickly is to not control. You do not need to control this stuff. This is not about creating a beautiful artwork. It doesn't need to look good. Okay? I'm really, really excited to see what your emotion map looks like. And now I want you to take your time Think through what have you just done and create one emotion abstract painting, how you are feeling today without, you know, thinking into an emotion. But you can feel several things at the same time. So now I'm going to just go and create one totally randomly. So throwing their colors, shapes and lines as I feel totally randomly. Okay? 6. Final Piece: Okay, I'm finished. So now, take a second to reflect on what you can see on your image. I hope you spent the time you work with and in the flow state, so you didn't really want to control to create something beautiful but totally random and then reflect on it. And to be honest, I can see a giant bird here that has his eyes here. Can you see that? It is like a giant pigeon. Kind of in the sky because this is like a cloud and I think this pigeon is free and feels love and air. And actually, this is how I feel myself lately. Like, I feel freedom and ease. And this is it is now reflecting in this outwork and I just love it. And if you feel okay with that, you can just share your reflections of your final piece in the class project or just share your emotion map where you've felt into emotions. And I'm really, really super looking forward to see what you create in this class and how your emotion maps and final pieces will look like. And let's just wrap it up in the last video. 7. Final Thoughts: I hope that you had fun and that you could reflect and get empowered when it comes to your emotions. I recommend to do this exercise when you feel stuck in an emotion, and you can just grab your right pad and think, Okay, now I feel anger. This is how I'm feeling. And now I'm going to draw how would it look like if I would feel, you know, joy. And while you are doing that, will just transpire to that emotion. Okay? Your problems will not be resolved, but you can, you know, get these emotions from here too and transform them to something new and more enjoyable. I hope that you find this exercise useful, and I can't wait to see what you create. So make sure to upload your project into the project gallery. Also, please leave a review to the class so that I can know what you think about it. It was a pleasure to have you here, and I hope to see you in other classes as well. Happy creating.
