AFTER THE WORK DRIED UP
Rebuilding Design Income When the Gigs Stopped
2026 Edition

You have read that freelance design work fell 38 percent.

There is no study behind that number. It comes from Upwork research saying 38
percent of the American workforce did freelance work in 2023. It is a
participation rate. Somebody read it backwards and it spread.

That is the state of the advice in this market, and it is why this book exists.

WHAT THE DATA ACTUALLY SAYS

US graphic designer employment fell from 214,260 to 197,830 in a single year,
a drop of 7.7 percent, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics figures
published in June 2026.

In the same year, the median graphic designer wage rose 2.7 percent.

Read those together. Employment fell faster than pay did. The market removed
suppliers rather than cutting the rate.

That single distinction changes what you should do next, and almost nobody
writing about this has noticed it.

THE ONE IDEA

Clients did not stop spending on design. They consolidated their spending into
fewer suppliers.

Forty-seven percent of businesses increased their design budget last year. Only
14 percent of hiring managers expect to need fewer freelance designers. Yet half
of self-employed creatives feel less financially secure than a year ago, and 47
percent of them earn under £30,000.

Both sets of numbers are true at once. That is only possible if the same money
is going to fewer people. This book is about becoming one of them.

WHAT'S INSIDE

Part One — What Happened
The figures everyone repeats, checked against the sources, with the three
that turn out to be wrong. What actually fell, measured. Which design work
held or grew, with the pay and employment data behind it. Why buyers
 consolidated instead of leaving.

Part Two — The Arithmetic
Your survival number, your stable number, and why the old one is the wrong
target. How to calculate your real recovered rate rather than your quoted
rate. Runway measured in months, with a table of what each band actually
allows you to attempt. And an honest chapter on what to do if replacement
does not happen, because there is no study saying that it will.

Part Three — The Three Income Shapes
Client work rebuilt narrower, using the categories that grew. The
productised service, with a worked example, real published market prices,
and the queue rule that makes it safe to sell. Products, with the actual
distribution: the average Etsy seller generated about $1,875 in 2025, and
the median Gumroad creator an estimated $72 a month. Then the sequence to
build them in, which is the part people get wrong.

Part Four — Pricing, Position and the First 90 Days
Why discounting answers a problem you do not have. Three things to change
instead of your rate. How to position when execution costs nothing. A ninety
day plan with dated milestones and a printable checklist.
