I've been working as a full-time artist since 1980. I have had the pleasure of teaching art since 1983 and have taught thousands of classes on drawing and painting. I would consider it a privilege to assist you in achieving your artistic goals.

I have taught the basic and advanced mechanics and principles which give us the skill and confidence to express creatively, for the past 30 years. Sharing them is my passion! 

What Do I Like Teaching?

Watercolors and Acrylic are my specialty. I work with oils also but not as often as the water based mediums.

I love trees, mountains, rocks, water, flowers, and all that nature has to offer. Getting out into nature always gives me a creative boost. You get the real energy and feeling of space and belonging.

I use my watercolors to get the initial inspiration and then it's off to the studio for a larger painting using the sketches for info and direction.

No Time to fuss around when you are painting in the elements...just get it done and get home...then decide what to do with the feelings and form you have captured from nature.

 Go for the realistic rendering and get all those shadows and textures that make us really get our nose right up to the painting and be entertained by all those details.

Taking some watercolor sketches and working them up into a much larger painting in acrylic can take many months to finish. 

To create is to listen and act.You have to do it because you are compelled to do it...so you do it.

Simple Can Really Work: Following a simple and direct watercolor method will give you an appreciation for what Watercolors can do for you. As you can see below we have kept the brushwork to a minimum and have suggested rather than congested.

Details are achieved by simply adding small touches of texture, color and contrast. As seen below.

Don't be afraid of color ...use it. I have a great time doing non-objective and abstract art as it keeps me loose and experimenting with color harmonies.

Below is a color harmony that pops right out at you. Learning how and why colors go together and influence our viewing enjoyment is one of the key things to master.

Try different styles and subject matter when you paint and draw. If you are doing the same thing year after year then switch it up!

Here is a close up of an acrylic on linen canvas. Notice the Orange and Blue complements. 

One of my very favorite projects was an art book for children called the Artabet. It teaches children how to draw using 6 universal lines (similar to how vowels are the building blocks of Languages). Artabet is now in over 16 countries and is used by thousands of school teachers and art teachers worldwide as their basic art curriculum.

I live and work at home with my first love Sara, who is the other half of our Art and Music School, on a pristine acreage by the Little Slocan River in British Columbia, Canada.I love painting outdoors and have made it a weekly regime for the past 37 years.
