Hi Lubna,This is a great effort on this sketch! Despite using a 4B pencil you've managed to keep good control over your values from what I can tell. I generally used H and 2H for the majority of my drawings, maybe an HB or B for dark areas. The key for me in obtaining an even finish is to slowly build up my values over the course of the drawing. The harder leads will also make it a little easier to get into the smaller pores of the paper so that ultimately larges areas of tone can look a bit more even if you spend enough time on them. The main critique I would have of your drawing overall would simply be that the value ranges are all more or less in the same range. What ends up happening with that is the lack of contrast makes it harder to separate and identify the various forms that are happening on the face as well as a sense of depth. This could easily be fixed on your drawing by restating your shadow shapes with darker values so that the lights become even more obvious. In terms of contours, its not something I typically focus on too much. I try and think about the forms that I'm drawing and making sure that the shapes are well defined. I've always found that as you model a drawing in the later stages, the contours ultimately resolve themselves as you render. Thats not to say that you couldn't emphasize them if you wanted to however. Theres a lot of instances where you just may want to do that for a stylistic effect of some kind. This is something I've been trying to play with a little bit more recently and maybe its something I can discuss further in a future class. I hope this helps, and thanks for posing up your drawing! It really is off to a nice start and could be taken farther if you choose to do so. Keep up the good work!

I don't currently have a site or instagram. In regards to my own work, I'm very much in a stage of figuring out what that is for myself so in the meantime I don't really have much need or desire to use social media all that much. 

Its something I'll eventually get to, but I have a lot of things I'm trying to figure out for myself in my own art that is going to take some time. I was hoping to maybe sort that out this year, but with covid basically throwing off schedule it probably won't be until sometime next year I get any site or online presence up outside of skillshare.

Thanks for the quick response, you have no idea how much you helped me or have helped other people who don't have the means to legitimate academic training. 

Thanks to you, my learning curve wasn't so steep when I started my training this term at GCA now that it's online. I identify with you because I can tell you have an academic illustrative background Reilly method I suspect?

Please consider selling your videos through Gumroad . You deserve multiple streams of income and shouldn't depend on one platform.

Also,you should start a Patreon page. Stephen Bauman,GCA and other prominent academic figures have Patreons so it's not something to be embarrassed about it's the new normal now for artist. 

Once, again,thank you so much and please consider my suggestions especially a website. 

I keep telling people about you, but people dismiss me because most Skill Share artist aren't good and they judge before they even see your work.

Yes, you are very correct in that I do have a background in the Reilly method and I taught at the Watts Atelier for several years a long time ago. I do wish you the best of luck in your studies at GCA, and I'm happy to hear that some of my videos helped with the learning curve. The 'form' process at GCA does take some time to get used to, but once you understand the concept its just a matter or practice. Scott Waddell, who was my main instructor years ago has wonderful videos on this subject. 

I do plan on hopefully branching out to the other online platforms, and I do actually follow Stephen Bauman currently as I absolutely love his work! I do need to get better at editing and making it more of a nicer 'package' but I do hope to try other avenues to teach and hopefully help other students like yourself. Thank you again for such a wonderful comment, it really made my day!

You taught seven years at Watts? You look so young!Yeah, I saw the Reilly Method and Construction method when you did the head series. I figured Vilppu for Construction and CDA,Watts,Mark Westermoe or Ron Lemen for the Reilly Method.Don't worry about pretty overproduced packaging.

Serious students just care about the instruction. Just like you tell students not to get so caught up in artist materials, it's all about the end product.

The same advice to online teachers don't get caught up in production,it's students understanding the concepts that matter in the end. I hope you continue your series on how to start a drawing and go into depth on a light on form and color and light series.

 I would like to supplement your videos with GCA. Devin's class is hard!Also, try a YouTube channel as a dry run for your Patreon. 

That way you can gauge what the audience is interested in already and you're not starting your Patreon cold.

 When you are ready for Patreon,announce it on YT and you will have a built in audience taking the journey with you and you are not starting at zero.

Hi! I am an amateur artist. Love to do portraits. mostly use charcoal powder and brush. Enjoyed your class. This is my attempt using just a 4B pencil while watching your classes in one go. What I found most difficult was getting an even finish. Was also wondering why did we not draw the contour lines in the final project. would love to get any inputs/ guidance. I am most keen to catch the right expression/emotion.
