Hi Sara, it’s great to see that you continued working on this. In my opinion, the word looks better in blue. When you use Red, Blue-Green and Yellow-Green you are using a "Split Complementary” scheme. This scheme is a little bit less contrasting than using a Complementary color scheme but very appealing. You can play around with different color schemes going to the color menu, tapping on “Harmony” and then tapping on “Complementary” to make appear the Color Schemes available. When creating patterns inside letters or other illustrations that will make them look cropped, we have to bear in mind a few things: 1. The thickness (of the letters in this case). As you see, the letters are too thin, so the watermelon appears always cropped and it does not stand up. 2. Rhythm. Vary the size and position of the main subject of your pattern, so it does not look too repetitive. Also, I like the idea of the shadow, but I would add a inner shadow instead. In fact, I would add a inner shadow to the letters and a cast shadow to the watermelon slices, just to add a sense of depth. It’s a pity that teachers can no longer add images to their comments. It would be easier. Well, hope this helps. Keep up the great work! ;)

Great feedback! I appreciate this.  I will continue working on it. I haven’t done an inner shadow before - is it the same process but going inside the letters? And are you talking about working on the one with the pattern of watermelons, or the one with thicker black letters?

There are many different ways to create an inner shadow. In this case, what I would do is to select the content of the text layer tapping and holding with two fingers on the layer. Then tap invert. Create a new layer at the very top of your layer panel and fill it with white or any color you want for your background. Then duplicate that layer and change the color of the bottom one to black or to blue and apply the multiply or linear burn blend mode. Go to ‘Adjustments’ and apply Gaussian Blur pr Motion Blur or both depending on the effect you want to create. Finally, move that layer slightly up or down... I was talking about the pattern one. If you want to work with the thicker black letters, I would suggest you to write the black letters smaller and over the watermelon slice, as if they were seeds of the watermelon. Just a fun idea, though. :)

Hi Sara, Thank you very much for sharing your projects! I like the idea of the watermelon clipped. What if you make the watermelon painting smaller and duplicate it a few times to create a pattern, and then turn it into a clipping mask? I think this way the word itself would be easier to read and you will be able to see the whole watermelon painting, which is really nice. :)

Thank you so much for giving me feedback.  I re-did the piece.  I made a pattern of the resized watermelon.  I’m not sure if this works better?  I also added a bit of shadow to the letters.

I decided to give it another try - I didn’t think that the image of the watermelon was very visible in the patterned one.  So I enlarged the single watermelon and tried it again with black letters. I like this one the best because the watermelon can be seen, but also my eye first focuses on the image and then on the words, and then back again.  I find that interesting.

In this one the watermelon slice is different sizes and I added shadow to the slices and a harder edge to the letters.

 In the next two, I added watercolor paper.  In this one the slice does not have a shadow.  But the last one, the slice does have a shadow.  In both, the letters have a harder edge.
