This was so fun! I found a 4th way to obscure the cut. I selected and copied some of the existing shapes from slightly away from the boundary and duplicated/flipped/reflected/rotated, then placed them over the cut. And related, I used to direct selection tool to drag individual anchor points over the line to break it up. I'm also here to say the charcoal brushes are a million times easier! lol
