Hi Jean,

Ok here are my thoughts on your images.

1st black and white image
The lighting is perfect, nice background and her hair doesn't blend into the background, which is great. The posing is very good too, she's standing at an angle, which puts her shoulders into a nice position.

While i'm a big fan of chopping people's heads off!, for some reason I don't think it works in this case. Not sure of the reason, but I know with some of my images, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It may be you've chopped a little too much off. Also, I often tell  my subject to roll forward very slightly to give them a stronger jawline.

2nd black and white
Great lighting again, but this is 'broad lighting' where the side of her face closest to the camera, is the side that's lit. It's subjective, but I feel 'short lighting' looks better, where the side of the subject's face closest to the camera is the shadow side. So I would have placed the light on the other side (broad lighting tends to make the subject's face look wider, hence the term). There's a lecture on this (Lighting Patterns), in the Indoor Shoots section

3rd Colour image
Nice lighting, pose and expression.
I would lose the hand on the chin, as the more you stare at it the more it looks like it could be somebody elses hand punching her on the chin!! That's because you generally need to see the origin of the hand, so if we could see more of her body and arm, it would better.

Back of hands tend to look a bit ugly, so it may have looked better if her left hand was a bit more delicate on the violin, maybe turned and cured (as if she was holding a pen)

4th Colour image.
Again, great lighting, nice expression, but again, slightly broad lighting, so I would have had the light on the other side (or turned her the other way, looking back at you.)
To be honest though, what spoils this one for me is that there is too much white of her eyes, that's never really a good look, so it's usually better to have the eyes follow the nose.

Anyway, Jean you've really got the lighting nailed, and they're great images, i'm sure the lady is pleased with them.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to write such a detailed critique, I truly appreciate it :D

Never thought actually about the  effects that broad lighting and short lighting might cause on someone's face but it does make a lot of sense.  That's something I'll definitely consider for my next shooting. 

About the lighting...I'm glad I nailed it. As I said before, your lesson was so clear and helpful that I'm sure that everyone who watches it gets the perfect idea of how to make it work. Thanks again for that.

I declare myself a 'Padawan' of your lessons hahah. I've been watching the rest of your lessons and I look forward to seeing many more.
