Value and composition

Value and composition - student project

I didn't have access to very recent books, so I chose to analyze classics: Meg and Mog (Helen Nicoll and Jan Pieńkowski, Heinemann, London, 1972), The very hungry caterpillar (Eric Carle, Puffin Books, London, 1969) and The color monster (Anna Llenas, Sterling Children's Books, 2012).

All 3 books are for early childhood, and my question was how values are arranged at the level of spread or vignette rather than at the level of individual elements. What I found surprised me.

The spreads and vignettes rarely have overlapping elements, and the number of elements in each is generally low. The color monster is in a sense an exception but not so much, as there is a lot of colour in the spreads, but the monster is widely separated from the girl character. I concluded this was done for the sake of clarity.
