The Ogre and The Witch's familiar

Hello! Thank you so much for checking out my Project! This.. took me a lot more time than I am willing to admit.. but this is it! the two projects in my attempt to get my hand on with creature design! This first comes with the Ogre (which to me is more like a Cyclops, but oh well).

Here, I tried to make the ogre based on the script alone, and I ended up hating the design because it felt way too similar to the design to the one Robert Marzullo (our teacher) has made. And so I decided that I would begin a new ogre project, and forge a moodboard for the project.
The Ogre and The Witch's familiar - image 3 - student projectThis, is the Moodboard for our- no MY ogre. You'd see that with the script to guide me to picking images of creatures of one eye, ogre-like creatures, and some with big bulgy bellies. I even went about to find the most ... primal, Clubs to match the barbaric vibe the script is going for. Anyhow.. Here is the Ogre I came up with with the combination of these selected images and the script

Here I took the big, yet saggy belly idea from some of the images, and I had to utilize basic shapes to imagine where it's.. rear, would be so that I can still reach that stubby-like leg length without having the belly be so near the ground it becomes the main focus point. Along with that, I figured that "hey, these guys can be REALLY big.. so why not have him rip out an entire tree and turn it into his club?" to that I said to myself "yeah, let's do it".

With the clean-up, I added in little bumps across the skin, some belly hairs and some hairs around the chest (which are barely visible, I apologize for that) and feet. I also deformed his head by concaving it at it's top-right side.

I made sure that the ogre has a lot of battle scars as well, as to make him seem battle-worn. I also entertained with the idea that it once had another eye, but lost it in battle, so I had it be shown by the scar at the eye.

And here, we have the final version of it. I used Ink here to allow more visibility, and I removed the belly details, so that the clothes could stand out more. Overall, this is where I focused more on making a final, readable product than to make creative choices.

Now, it's time for the Second creature, which I have made for two reasons:

1. this project. I wanted to make sure I got to gain more experience with this class before I moved on

2. a personal project of mine. I had already designed the witch a while back, but I felt it necessary to also make the familiar as well, but given my not-so-good habit of putting things off, I didn't do it until, well, coincidently, Halloween.

Here is the mood board for the familiar, first and foremost.

So two main ideas are appearant here when it came to my familiar..
1. Lil Pumpkin dude - A small sentient pumpkin that'd follow it's master about the world

2. Dark Spirit - A witch would probably hold no qualms about shoving some dark spirit in a pumpkin for a familiar, especially should things be desperate for said witch.. But actually though, I thought It'd add some creative flare to an otherwise basic concept inspired by the Pumpkaboo Evolution line from Pokemon.

The Lighting is bad, I apologize for that. and I forgot to take a photo when they were all just light blue scribbly lines. I also apologize for that.

However, You could see the 2 designs that I ultimately liked out of my 6 creature designs.. #3, which made the pumpkin into a munchy lil boy, with the spirit hanging out in the mouth, acting as both it's brain, and it's tounge. and #6, which again sticks with the munchy pumpkin idea, but this time has the spirit being held within it's head, trapped inside by magical chains that prevent it's escape. And believe me, picking between the 2 was a bit difficult, but In the end, I went in to chose #3, as it just.. felt better.

And now here's the more refined version of the witch's familiar, where I added some eyes, since I don't imagine the spirit willingly showing itself to the world, so it'd have the mouth closed at times as well. At the end, however, I like this design, and I feel it works with my Witch design (which I am not showing here, as this is about CREATURE designs)

I originally wanted to do this eldritch, herky jerky sorta monster that would act as a grunt for an even bigger threat as my second creature design, however the concept proved extremely difficult for me to effectively put on paper, so I ended up abandoning the idea in favor for the familiar, as the familiar is also a creature, but it had more of a manageable design for a creature-newbie such as myself.

But anyhoo, Thank you for taking the time to read it all, I hope you have a great day (or night), and I hope you the best of luck in your future projects.
