The Elevator

The Elevator - image 1 - student project

So, this is the first project that I've done totally from scratch, without pre-made assets, so it was quite a test of what I've learned so far.  The modeling was the easy part.  The door latches in particular are pretty complicated, but I had no trouble making them.  I made sure to keep everything properly sized, I even went and looked up exact dimensions for elevators in general.

Oddly, the hardest part of the modeling was the hallway.  I had to figure out the knife tool to cut out the section for the elevator itself to go into, and that was all very confusing.  Blender's interface is so freaking weird sometimes. The length of the hallway itself though was easy. Being able to just make a cube and flip the normals, that's so much better than trying to make individual walls out of cubes or something.

The overall style and coloring of the whole thing is heavily inspired by a game series called Anthology of the Killer.  That garish, clashing colors and exaggerated patterns, that game uses a lot of that.  Though it handles lighting different, it's uses a uniform, flat, bright lighting, but still really gives that slightly disturbing, liminal feel, so that was perfect for the inspiration.

That bright light on the ceiling at the end wasnt really planned, I had it in there when doing the shaders/textures, but it looks oddly fitting there, so I left it in.
