Sketching from photographs

Sketching from photographs - image 1 - student projectI have been wanting to learn how to sketch more freely and Suzanne's class was inspiration for just learning to use a pen for photo sketching.  The church photo I did in a 0.3 Copic pen and I tried shading with the same pen.

Sketching from photographs - image 2 - student projectThe rest of my sketches were done with a Sailor Fude calligraphy pen which I also enjoy working with because it gives a variety of line.  I didn't have any of the water soluable graphite that so many artists seem to use, and so I add my shadows with some Payne's gray from my watercolors.  It seems to have a different color tint to the pen's ink however...  I'm also not sure if I got the lights and darks right in this sketch...

Sketching from photographs - image 3 - student projectI really enjoyed doing this sketch and though I couldn't get my darks as dark as Suzanne's, I used a watersoluable graphite pencil (and I did try shaving off the graphite to use with a brush but it took too long) and I just shaded where I liked and then moved the color around with a water brush.

Sketching from photographs - image 4 - student projectI decided to try this pen technique with my own photo and snapped a shot from a waiting room window and sketched it when I got home.  It was difficult to decide what to leave out and what to add as the scene was actually in the city and there were buildings and telephone poles around.  Leaving all of that out made the sketch too blank, and adding them (as I did) seems to jumble up the sketch more than I'd plan.

I hope to try some other of Ms. Abraham's classes and develop my sketching skills further.
