I used 5mm blue zircon Swarovski crystals for the stones and 22-gauge copper wire.  I have to admit I cheated a little bit and fell back on my prior wire working experience.  Making spirals from the outside in was very challenging, so I created the spirals from the inside out and the process was much easier.
