Sea Turtle Painting in Watercolor

Hi everyone! :)

Sea Turtle Painting in Watercolor - image 1 - student project

I want to start with sharing my materials that I used in the creation process:

  • burnt sienna, raw sienna, burnt umber, ceruleum blue, sepia/black watercolors (from Nevskaya Palitra White Nights)
  • table salt
  • 2 cups of water
  • cotton towel
  • Canson XL watercolor paper (A4 size, 300 gsm)
  • pencil and eraser
  • A4 size office paper (80 gsm) for tracing process
  • no. 1 and no. 3-4 size synthetic brushes
  • reference image
  • ceramic/porcelain dish as mixing palette

Steps that I followed in the process of creation of this sea turtle:

  • simple watercolor techniques that I used in the process of painting the sea turtle

  • tracing the sea turtle with just pencil and office paper

  • painting the head of the turtle

  • contining with its skin and then legs by leaving white spaces to imitate its unique pattern

  • applying the first layer with wet on wet on the turtle’s shell and using salt to give texture and highlights

  • editing the final piece and fixing small mistakes on the painting
