Savoring Napa

Savoring Napa - student project

This is my map of Napa Valley. I'm super pleased with how it turned out. I'm sharing my process, grouped by the sessions provided in the Project Timing Guide.

SESSION 1

I used the ChatGPT prompt provided in the class to give me a simulated brief, and this is the region and theme it gave me:

Region: Napa Valley

Theme: "Savoring Napa"

From there, I plotted out my points in Google Maps, and then used that to create my rough Base Map Sketch.

SESSION 2

Below are my O-Mode sketches, which I just pasted into a single composition for your convenience :)

SESSION 3

This is my refined map (I-Mode sketch), complete with icons and everything else. Everything is roughed in and ready to start illustrating overtop!

SESSION 4

Here are some inky mark and texture scans, plus some tests of my brushes!

SESSION 5

In this stage, I created my CSG File (download here) and then completed my base map in the final.

SESSION 6

In this session, I finished adding the 5 point of interest icons.

SESSION 7

And … finally, the completed map with all the finishing touches. Final touches include:

  • Adding texture with the Sponge brush
  • Adding labels for the icons
  • Adding cartographic symbols, such as the mountains, trees and route numbers.
  • Adding the title icon (the big sign)
  • Adding in the lake name (and waves)
  • Adding the larger POI dots with callout lines
  • Adding the North-pointing compass rose!

Below the image is a screen shot of my canvas statistics. As you can see, it took me over 9 hours to complete from start to finish (including sketches). To view your own stats, go to Actions (Arrow menu in Procreate) -> Canvas -> Canvas Info -> Statistics.

Of course, it took me some extra time to plan this and step through it as part of this class, and this is also one of my first times using Procreate to illustrate a full map like this.

I believe with practice, plus having some of my readymade stamp brushes, I could complete a map like this much, much faster — perhaps in less than half the time.

UPDATE - AUG 7/24: Thanks to some vigilant students who pointed out some misspellings, I corrected the lake name (BERRYESSA) and the spelling of CULINARY. In my defence, I had it right in the sketches!
