Retro Travel to India Posters
As I was researching vintage travel posters, I realized two things:
1. I love to take an existing design and riff off it
2. I love the Braniff Airways ads/posters! I would want to make posters in that style (i.e. not landscapes and scenery, but people doing funny things.)
The first thing I did was a riff. I found this poster by Frederick Charles Herrick about "Scotland--the Land of Romance" featuring a deer in a dramatic pose:
And I at once thought "India--the Land of Elephants" (because "elephants" loosely rhymes with "romance") and imagined the poster with an elephant doing a dramatic pose.
I made a moodboard with elephants, looking for one with attitude:
I decided to go with "Karnataka" rather than India for the title because it fills up the space nicely (and Karnataka is the state in India with the biggest elephant population.) I also modified the color palette. Here is my version:
And here is the mockup. I like how it looks like Jurassic Park with friendly, mommy-calling-you-to-dinner-type dinosaurs!
Next I did a poster inspired by the cartoony style of Braniff Airlines:
This is my Braniff-style poster about Chennai in India:
And here is the mockup:
I still have some more ideas I'm thinking about, so I will update in a week or so. This class was very educational and inspiring!
