Other than a strangely gaping nostril, he came out ok.  I used a new paper block I purchased recently and the paper was awful, soaking up the water as if it had no coating on it at all (rembrandt royal talens 100% cotton). You can see how the texture of the paper shows because the paint soaked in unevenly.  So I'm going to try again with my arches.  Thanks for helping me dive into a picture that I would have been too intimidated to try on my own.  Portraits are not something I've ever felt I could do.  By going over this lesson again, I think I'll learn a lot about it!  I will add my second try after I finish it.
