<p>Wow Sam! Thanks for sharing this! </p><p>This is a great looking study! If you recall, how long did you spend on this particular painting? </p><p>In terms of a critique, I think theres a lot of strong elements in your work. The only thing I'm not sure of is if the original reference shows the entire head, or if it was cropped in the original as well? Only reason I mention that is when something is cropped it can be hard to see the relationships of everything to the entirety of the head. </p><p>That said, the features themselves look great! The only real issue I see is perhaps the description of the wing of the nostril on the nose as the darker edge makes it hard to tell if its a shadow or part of the wing of the nostril. </p><p>Some of the colors in the flesh tones are perhaps getting a little muddy, but thats a difficult thing to control sometimes. I might suggest pre-mixing some flesh tones in the beginning so that you have consistent values/mixtures as you're painting the face and making small adjustments for temperatures as you go. You may already be doing this, but if not, it might be worth trying for you. </p><p>One thing I might suggest as well is that a lot of the surface paint seems to have a uniformity of paint consistency. Meaning, everything looks to be the same overall opacity of paint. You may try staining your surface prior to painting and keep some transparent passages in the shadows so that it allows the lights to really separate themselves much clearer. Again, you may have done this already, but just in case, its a suggestion to consider. </p><p>Overall though, I think this really is a great little study! I would love to see more of your work or drawings/paintings as you do them. This is incredible for 14. You've certainly put in the time! Great job!</p>

This was completed over about 2 and a half hours in school for my GCSE art class (I live in the UK). <div>The reference I used only had what I'd actually painted, and wasn't cropped for this study. In terms of pre mixing colours and staining the surface, I'm not actually doing that right now, so this will definitely be something I try in my next piece.

I do quite a lot of drawing and painting portraits but can't seem to get the likeness right. The faces always look structurally and anatomically correct but I can't get them to look the same, albeit still close. <p>Here is my attempt at a portrait sketch. For reference I've been using oil paints for 7 years and I'm 14, and looking to become a professional artist in the future. I'm really happy with the way this turned out, even though my blending isn't as smooth as usual, but I think it creates a nice effect. I also tried using oil painting paper, as oppose to a traditional canvas, just because it was what I had on hand.&nbsp;</p>
