No Nudes, Just Clothes: The Basics of Historical Costume Design

Concept

For my project, I wanted to draw a character in contemporary African attire.

Research & Reference

I took the time to gather some reference images. Then, I traced key shapes, creases, and folds that contribute to the overall construction of the clothing. I also took note of the colors and fabrics used.

Final Illustration

I'm used to doing quick, rough sketches without color, so I don't really have a go-to for dynamic line weight. While I experimented with brushes a bit, I couldn't really find anything that I liked for the final line work in that time. So, I just cleaned up the original sketch.

I want to experiment with line work more in future illustrations as I think it would make my drawing feel more dynamic. But I still like the way this turned out!

Here's what I came up with:

Thanks a bunch!
