Hi Katherine,  This is a great first study in oils! It certainly takes some time to get used to how the materials behave especially since nothing drys quickly, but you'll soon find this is what makes it fun to work with as you can keep manipulating the paint until you get your desired result.  Since its your first study, I won't give you too much critique since theres going to be a lot of 'firsts' you're experiencing with the medium. The only thing I can maybe tell from the photo is that maybe the paint looks a little on the 'thick' side, meaning theres a lot of paint on the surface.  My recommendation would be as your starting out, think about areas where you can maybe have thinner passages of paint, and areas where it might be beneficial to have thicker or more impasto areas of paint. The easier way to start with this, is to have your shadow areas be a little more transparent and gradually build up the paint as you work towards your light areas. The areas with the greatest concentration of light, leading up to the highlight can get a little thicker.  This is a broad generalization, but having different consistencies of paint will add to the dimension of your picture, and it will allow areas to recede and come forward depending on how the paint is built up. I would definitely continue to do these monochrome studies for awhile and get used to how the paint feels and manipulating it with your brushes. It'll take some time for certain, but you're off to a great start. Feel free to post more studies and I'll gladly critique them for you!  Best, Mark

My first time using oils. I have always been intimidated by oils and color mixing. I just used Titanium White and Ivory Black and mixed them to have a total of 7 shades. Having Mark Hill show all the painting shades he used for the project was very helpful because I just stopped the video and mixed the paints referencing the screen. Can't wait to keep learning from this course. Oil painting is something I have dreamed of doing so why not give it a try!
