Misty Night

Misty Night - student project

Rain fell like fine mist as she walked through the streets of the city towards her apartment. The rain cast a shiny reflection like that of glass on the street and the street lights danced as the flashed from green to red. Each row of lights blinking one after the other. The few cars that were moving up and down the street looked as if they were driving on a glass sheet of road. Their car lights reflecting their lights far ahead of them off the street. As she walked  on she would stop and turn just for a moment to see if there was indeed some one behind her. Seeing and hearing no foot steps  of no one she she continued on her way home. Her running shoes making a gritty sandy noise as she walked on the pavement.

She felt tired as she passed by  several shops and taverns that wer closed up for the night. Their owners probably gone home for the night or taking a pint down at the local pub with their friends. Some might even be out having dinner with their families. This she could not do her body screamed for relief. After working three days straight in the ER and receiving victims from a serious car crash on the 502  highway she needed her bed desperatley. Again she stopped to listen for any foot steps behind her. She heard only the low whispered murmurs of people talking and coming up and passing her by. They  paid her no attention as they  walked by into the night. Her appearence meant nothing to them for she was simply dressed in her scrubbs from the night before. With her long black raincoat over her blue uniform scrubbs. Her black purse hung over her shoulder with a long black leather strap.

In her purse she also carried a long metal unbrella which she did not open becasuse she wanted to feel the night air on her face and slight breeze through her long blone hair as the mist fell. To he rit felt good to get away from the santized air of the hospital to the open free air outside.  As the people passed her she turned and waited a few minutes to hear of any other foot steps  coming up behind her. She heard none. She assumed that who ever was following her was trying to keep pace with her. Hearing no one she continued on towards her place.  The streets were quiet again except for thet light fall of the misty rain that continued to fall lightly on the street.  Staying under the dim of the street lights she passed a few bars and heard the sound  of several people laughing and talking over each other as they tried to make themselves heard. She knew she could use a stiff drink right now but she wanted to wait until she was home. Again she stopped, the sound of the gritty sidewalk under her shoes making sounds. She turned  and looked quickly behind her seeing and hearing no one. She could not shake this feeling that someone was following her.

Leaving the bar behind her she proceeded on her way. The train ride had worn her out as it always did each night. She fell asleep and almost missed her stop if her friend had not shaken and woken her up dto see it coming up. Finally arriving home she pulled the keys from her pocket, inserted into the door, turned the knob and quickly entered her home while locking the door behind her. She readily disrobed and walked over to the sofa. The nearest bed she could find and layed out her tired frame in its long comfortable expanse. She then pulled the covers over herself and did not bother with eating anything sleeping was all she wanted. Sleep came quickly and over took her as the night moved in and covered the room. As for the shadow she felt following her, it managed to stay in the shadow of an alley across from her house's window watching and waiting for her to come out and play one more time. As for the rain it continued to fall like mist throughout the night.
