Making Intricate Floral Patterns

Making Intricate Floral Patterns - student project

For this class, I wanted to create a seamless floral pattern, creative and complex, but using only simple shapes and basic tools from Illustrator. A lot of times it happens that we get blocked by the "I can't do it", "it's too complicated", "it's not going to work for me" thoughts in our head and we don't even start to do what we wanted to do. So, I set my mind to create a class where you don't need excellent drawing skills and professional experience with Illustrator to create a beautiful artwork, illustration or pattern. So, simple, shapes, basic tools, a little persistence and lots of fun and this is the outcome.

These are some of the shapes I started with, which were all created using only the shape tool (primarily ellipse and line), the pathfinder tool and the blend tool. To create variety, I tweaked some of the shapes by changing the color, the angle and orientation of the petals and leaves and adding different embellishment motifs.  Making Intricate Floral Patterns - image 1 - student project

I put it all together to create a seamless repeat pattern. I played with different color combinations and created a couple of assorted patterns, to form a mini-collection.

The first seamless pattern was created using the workflow I describe in the class Repeat Patterns made Easy, in Illustrator, while the last ones where created using the Pattern Tool.

I hope you enjoy the class and I warmly encourage you to share your thoughts, questions, experiments and projects.

Happy making,

Quirky Daniela.
