Loose shapes with graphite sticks

Here are sketches done with graphite sticks from the class. I tried too keep everything gestural and loose, thinking of a strong shape that holds everything together before I added any details. Remember: big shapes first, thin lines second.

For these parrots I used the Artgraf graphite stick:

For the pelican I switched to the Lyra graphite stick - it handles a bit differently since you hold it at a different angle:

And for the iris, I broke off a piece of an Artgraf tailor shape water-soluble graphite (what a long name!). I didn't add water though:
