Just Around the River Bend

(Couldn't resist the title, it keeps putting that song in my head!)

 

I didn't have masking fluid so I foolishly tried using white oil pastel, thinking I could scrape it off. That was a disaster and resulted in this mess:

I'll keep this as a reminder not to make that mistake again.

 

Started over and just avoided the areas I didn't want to colour, then used white gouache to pick the trees back out and tidy them up. Second try got me this:

I'm over the moon! I've got the hang of acrylic paint, but still struggled with achieving much depth or clarity in watercolour. This is easily the best watercolour piece I've ever managed to create, and it's given me more of a sense of how to layer the paint (and how much patience I need when it's drying), and how to work a little more loosely without going abstract.
