Blender 3D: Erstellen einer Animation im Manga-Stil mit Grease Pencil

Hello again Karlin! You're becoming quite the prolific project poster! I love it haha! First off, wow! This is fantastic! You've really gone all out with this project! There are so many fantastic details and clever uses of the techniques from class in your render! I really love your application of this manga treatment to this Japanese alleyway. The black and white, inky and worn nature of the image reminds me of horror manga by Junji Ito (not for the faint of heart, so I wouldn't look him up if you're not into horror haha...) There's an eeriness to the world due to its lack of life in an otherwise bustling city street. I really like it! As for the modeling and technical aspects, they're equally well done! I can tell how much work and thought you put into this scene. I used to do architectural rendering in my previous job, so I know just how much work it is to create storefronts and dense city streets! You've really captured the feeling of a busy night full of shops, restaurants and bars in a cozy back alley. Some of my favorite details are the 2 shops on the left side where we can see the products they are selling and the lit up signs dotting the street. These details really grab your attention and pull us into the world. Your choice of materials is great as well. There's a nice combination of simplified "textured" surfaces that feel like the paper showing through, as well as more eye catching materials like the brick paver pathway that splits the image in half. It's important to have areas where your eyes are "engaged" and areas where your eyes "rest" and I think you've crafted a very nice balance here. The manga effect is also well realized! The paper texture over the whole image and the addition of grease pencil linework gives the image a decidedly hand drawn feeling. My favorite (possibly unintended) effect is how the strong paper texture in the sky almost looks like a faintly illuminated tree canopy. This makes it feel like this alleyway exits into a possibly unfinished or long abandoned area of the city, which is quite cool! ------------------- Now for the animation, I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with it rendering properly! I see what you mean about the lights flickering. While it will be difficult to diagnose the problem exactly, I can give you some tips to narrow it down. First off, the EEVEE render engine we use for this class is a very lightweight and fast engine, however it does this with some tricks behind the scenes that can cause weird issues like this. It's possible this might be the cause of your issues. The main trick it does to speed up the render is limiting the way lights can interact with your world to simplify the image. It will "turn off" lights that aren't seen in the frame, and it will force the scene to choose just one light to cast a shadow rather than trying to approximate multiple lights at the same time. I suspect this might be your issue as it seems like each frame of your animation is choosing new lights to cast shadows causing a flicker. The easiest way to check this (and solve the problem if that's its cause) is to dramatically simplify your lighting. I see you have a lot of string lights and separate store fronts and balconies in your world. If each one of these bulbs and buildings has a light associated with it, that will significantly increase the amount of lights in the world. My tip would be this: Turn off all but your most important light (probably something on the outside like the "moon" or "sun"), then do another animation render. Does this solve the issue? If so, try turning on a few more of the most important lights and re-render. Is the flicker still gone? Keep doing this until you start to notice the flicker again, then turn off the last few lights you enabled. This is your limit for this scene. After you find the limit, try moving lights around or changing their brightness to best utilize them to get the look you want. Sometimes one light can illuminate multiple areas that used to have multiple lights. I probably wouldn't devote any lights at all to the string lights, and instead just let them be emissive materials, or just one single point light in the center of the wire to approximate the lighting of all the bulbs. We’ll even add visual and sound effects directly within Blender! We'll start the animation from scratch with an optional importable black hole model. You’ll learn about volumes (fog), animated materials, scatter modifiers, animation, lighting, compositing, video editing inside Blender and more!

For my project, I wanted to challenge myself. I wanted to combine everything that I've learned up to this point and create my own scene. In the past, I've attempted to capture the busy and eccentric nature of streets or alley ways in Japan, but never quite got it. I think this project pushed me to my best intereation of it yet!

This took me a very long time to make but I am super proud of how it turned out. This project utilized my skills in implementing materials, Modeling from the ground up, And adding smaller elements to it to give it more detail such as the grease pencil. I will say what the nature of this project I pulled back on using the grease pencil to the degree that we did in our actual class, But it forced me to find a way to put detail in other areas. 
While the still turned out really great I don't think the video did. I'm not sure what I did to cause the lights to flicker off of my geometry but anytime I try to fix something or re render it it does the same thing.

Regardless of this though I had a great time with this project and I'm super happy with how it turned out :)
