Hand Lettering, Home, Aqua • an Inspired Art Journal Page

Often, I sit down to create in my art journal feeling excited to get messy with my art supplies, but I have just 10-15 minutes to do it. I’m really glad to have created this prompt card deck because now I won’t waste time figuring out what to create and can spend more time actually creating.

Here’s a recent page that was inspired by my creative prompt card deck.

From each of the 3 categories in my creative prompt deck, I drew these cards:

  • Hand Lettering
  • House/Home
  • Aqua

I turned to my collection of collage ephemera and markers to gather some aqua-colored materials. I found brush pens, watercolor swatches, typewritten text, and an old abstract monoprint featuring rust and bright aqua.

Cutting out a few typewritten words of text, I assembled the phrase “into the city” which I relate to the House/Home prompt. I started thinking about the different areas I have lived in and decided I wanted to capture my feelings about my move, years ago, to the city I now call home. I lettered “home” repeatedly on the right page, and started playing with arranging my collage papers on the left.

I finished this journal page by circling the typewritten text with my Micron pen to make it the focal point of the spread.

Using the card deck to inspire my journaling is like solving a fun creative puzzle with each spread. I hope you enjoyed seeing how the card deck has helped me transform a blank page into a fun journal spread in just a few minutes.
