Here is an attempt at light painting with my reluctant models. I noticed a spider on our dogs back just when editing...no wonder she did not want to sit still. 

 

It was pretty dark in this spot so used 30th of a second shutter speed at F4 and 200iso at about 35mm (is it the darker the better or you still want some ambient light?). I used a tripod but the subjects found it hard to stay still. Had an LED torch with adjustable beam and stood to the left side of the camera to light. Some shadows on the wall. My son William found the light bright and kept closing his eyes (any tips for this?).
