Faithful Gaze
I have been wanting to learn more about painting animals on hot-pressed paper, and after seeing other beautiful artwork come from this class, it immediately caught my attention. It felt like a double win for me — not only was the focus on hot-pressed paper, but the subject was a black and white dog with touches of brown, which made it the perfect opportunity to paint my own dog, JayCee.
I really appreciated how clearly all of the steps were explained throughout the class. I was also excited to use Shadow Violet, as it’s a color I’ve been reaching for more and more for shadows and soft blacks. I love the purples and pinks that emerge from it, and it worked beautifully for this subject.
Painting on hot-pressed paper was a very different experience for me. I especially enjoyed techniques like using masking fluid, lifting paint, and creating soft glows — all of which felt particularly effective on this surface. I did find blending colors on the paper more challenging at first, but following your wonderful suggestions helped everything come together.
I was a little unsure about adding the background and got a bit close to the top of her head, but I was able to improve the illusion by incorporating a small amount of gouache. Overall, it was a really rewarding experience.
I used Arches Hot-Pressed paper 9 x 12.
Thank you, Emily — I truly enjoyed spending the day painting in your class.
