Exploring Watercolor ~ Garden Bouquet

Exploring Watercolor ~ Garden Bouquet - student project

Hello class!

For my class project, I chose to go with a larger page print (9x12 page), and incorporate a vase.  I wanted to do something a little different than what we worked on together in class, but still carry over the lessons and flowers that we made together.

I chose to use primarily wet-on-dry technique to paint the flowers initially after I sketched my layout with pencil.  I wanted my pencil lines to show through, so I did not make them very light, nor erase them before I started painting.  This is a style I really love to incorporate in my work!

I used a wet-on-wet technique in the center of the bouquet to create the illusion of a denser cluster of buttercups. For this part, I added more paint in while the initial paint was wet, then I smudged it around by adding just water (like we did in the lesson on tea roses). This created the effect I wanted of a really loose feeling to the bouquet ~ keeping it wild and organic!

I then added graphite afterwards to give it a slightly "unfinished" feel (another component of my personal style i've honed over the years that just makes me happy).

All this, and lots of yellow = a painting that was an utter joy to create! Using styles and techniques and colors I've fallen in love with over the years of painting.

I can't wait to see what you all create!
