Encanto: Little Mirabel

I chose this screen capture because there was just something about little Mirabel that immediately caught my attention. Whether it was the dreamy, hopeful eyes or just seeing a Latina girl represented in Disney (I’m not Colombian but I am Latina) or maybe both I don’t know but I find this capture wholesome.Encanto: Little Mirabel - image 1 - student project

Here is my rough sketch. I had a hard time convincing myself it didn’t have to be perfect but just rough because I could fix it later but I did my best and I’m not mad at the result! Now onto the next step! :D

So the first iteration I struggled with changing the eyes because the angle feels weird and they’re also Disney eyes—on a child, which makes them extra big! But this was the result!

Then the second iteration I felt like I found my footing better and I was more satisfied. It’s not perfect but I feel like some of the subtle changes needed are to be seen when painted rather than sketched. We shall find out.

I forgot to take a photo of the lineart before painting it! Sorry!

Here is the gouache painted piece! I am happy with it, but I will be adding some details with color pencils, such as highlights and shadows in the face and maybe a little more definition on the hair to separate it from the background. All in all, this was so much fun and I'm glad I did it even though I felt really intimidated in the beginning! I know it's not a copy, but that's okay! :)

And here is the final:
