These feel so free and loose, you did a wonderful job at simplification Jennifer! Which drawing tool did you enjoy the most?

Thank you Jerney! The 0.5 drawing pen was the easiest and most freeing. Brought in brush pens (to illustrate based on this class) how I might enhance or simplify... However, brush pens are also fun to start with, can vary thickness etc.

Oh yes I can imagine that drawing pen can move very swiftly across the page!  Thank you for inspiring me to dig up my brush pens some time soon. I hardly ever use them because I often teach in charcoal, crayons,  inks and acrylics. But they do sound fun!  Are some of them blind drawings as well?

Not really, though I would say I looked more at the inspiration photo than the page. However, have recently also had similarly fun results from blind drawing a self-portrait. Saved that in my pocket for further exploration.

Ohhh that's why! Looking mostly at the reference photo is the way to go if you're observing expression. I love that you're planning to explore the blind portrait further. A fun thing to do:Close your eyes and feel your face. At the same time take a piece of charcoal on its side and move that across your paper. Press a little harder where you feel your features more clearly.  Open your eyes and look at your paper. If you see a portrait, work on it further with your eyes open. If you see something completely different, just go with that! It's a fun way to start art projects. You can see a similar way of starting a project in my class about loosening up with charcoal if you like exercises like that. Of course you can use a different drawing tool but charcoal is the most flexible. :)

I see "loose" sketched finished portraits all the time and I love them, but this lesson really freed me up with some practical and usable advice - mainly LET GO. I drew pages of them and had a lot of chuckles and laughs, and feeling encouraged to play with this more with mixed media. Thank you Toby!
