This was such a fun beginner class to take and Irina provided some fantastic resources to help create the illustration. I was able to create a beautiful textured illustration in no time!

 

Final Illustration

Papercut technique

I thought this illustration would look great as though it was cut out of paper so I used a papercut technique behind each element. To do this I alpha locked each layer then copied it twice, the first layer is the design layer, the second layer is filled in white and moved it diagonally to the bottom left corner, and for the third layer I filled it in black and moved it diagonally to the top right corner. This gives a 3D effect.

For this piece I used a mixture of Irina’s brushes and my own pattern brushes I’ve made over the years.

My own sketch

 

I used a photograph I took of a countryside location (not Scotland sorry!) as my reference and added extra details such as: the cow, cockerel and kites. It was relatively easy as I kept the sketch to simplified shapes like Irina.

 Final piece

I ended up tweaking some of the design elements from the sketch, like changing the shape of some of the trees, removing the kites and adding bales of hay. Again, I used a mixture of my own pattern brushes and Irina’s

Papercut effect
