Comparing Harry's & Gillette
I noticed that many of my female friends were using Harry's razors so I thought it could be an interesting product to look at, particularly in comparison to a more established brand like Gillette.
Color: Harry's homepage uses a light blue opposed to Gillette's darker blues and blacks. They both use gradients, but Gillette's layout uses a lot more sharp shapes and contrasts. Just look at the call-to-action buttons - one with rounded edges, the other square.
Product: Harry's minimalist design utilizes an orange rubber handle. Gillette's all metal razor looks like a complex piece of engineering reminiscent of a sports car. It even has features like a 'Flexball" that seem highly technical.
Marketing: Harry's homepage does not mention gender while Gillette has 'man' in its tagline and suggests customizing a razor with '#1 dad' as well as the LBGT rainbow.
While Harry's still markets itself as a men's product (it is called Harry's after all), it does look to be a more gender-neutral product in a traditionally gendered space.
